It'll break or burn down eventually... just wait :P

Youd be hard pressed to keep up with this 996 turbo in anything but a supercar. Hate it all you want. Thumbs up from the Car Wizard.
Imagine one with an extra 350 whp... these cars are bonkers
Forget the lights, it’s the hideous interior that’s the issue for most
The vehemence of the porsche owners hatred of this style 911 just shows how douchey they are... I think the styling looks really nice, and the headlights look fine.
Just makes them a better deal for the rest of us sensible enthusiasts!
@@TheSoundofSpeed If only Hoovie would stop promoting them - I know I personally want one now.
You Gotta Admit The Pre-facelift 996 Was Horrendous.
@@jasonandrsen yeah, I'm not a huge fan but as I always say about my 996tt, you can't see the headlights from the driver's seat!
@@jasonandrsen I certainly agree that the facelift model like Hoovie's does look better... Personally I'd probably upgrade the nose if I found a great deal on a pre-facelift model - if it can be done without major modification.
Its gonna be hilarious if this 911 skyrockets in value in the future because it has the unique headlights that 98% of other 911 dont have 😂
Exactly!
Porsche drivers don’t buy cars for their future values. We are not Ferrari owners.
Last time I was this early the Bentley gt still had cocaine in the trunk.
Since nobody says it, i'll say it: I love the front look of these, specially in Turbo/ 4S bumpers, they look awesome, and i could't give a flying f*** if other think it's "waaaaah, it's not Porsche, not round, not Porsche!!! Waaaaah, air cooled!". I grew up with this generation on sale, and i still think it's the better looking Turbo of the water cooled generation.
Hugo Fernandes couldn’t agree more, often times purist are a boring bunch and almost as annoying as the Nissan GTR and the BMW fanboys
Cheers
Totally agree to both. I love my 996tt and wouldn't take a newer 997 or 991 over it. We need more people to stand up for the headlights!
I don't like the Fried egg look, but I love the look of this facelifted headlights

@GTi Mk5 I totally forgot about that game! Wonder if I can find a copy somewhere haha.
so your getting ready to sell it
You're
I don't think he buys any car with the intention of keeping it.
On a 996 Turbo, Range 1 overrevs (6750-7250rpm) are not a real concern (also, you'd notice if you were hitting the fuel cutoff). Range 2 overrevs (7250+) are a concern, but you *can not* get a Range 2 overrev by bouncing off the redline. Don't miss a downshift and you will be fine.
^this
Oh so its a moneyshift counter.

Nope. Thumbs up
We all know you’re a good sport, Wizard. Just joking around!
Finally, someone agrees with me! I prefer a 996 over any newer Porsche generation.. doesn't mean I dislike them just prefer this generation.
🙌 totally agree. I just test drove a 997 turbo, wouldn't take it over my 996tt.
just out of curiosity why did you guys gets get porches? what was the deciding factor?
@@captainfancypants4933 I wanted a daily drivable sportscar with AWD for the winter. I also wanted something that was under the radar and could blend in as Hoovie mentioned, rather than have something very "Hey, look at me!". Plus 996 turbos are super mod friendly. My 996 turbo now makes over 700hp to the wheels. Not many cars that can hang with that.
@@TheSoundofSpeed how do you fare with 700hp to deal with in snow? Do you have a low HP setting?
@@M_773 yeah, I can adjust boost from 12 psi all the way up to 23 psi. Makes 731 awhp on 23 psi, and 600 or so on 12 psi. But mostly even on the high boost setting, you just don't get into boost if its wet or snowy. These cars are actually quite docile if you're not in boost. Cruises around town just as well as it destroys at the track.
Are you sure you are the blind squirrel, and not the nut?
you just fucked me up
Tyler, you really should try to find a Citroën DS or (even better) a SM. These cars are made for you. Full of crazy tech (for their time), full of quirks. A Citroën DS would fit you like a glove !
problem with the SM is that they are a nightmare to fix if there are problems with the hydraulic system (which there will be on cheap ones)
Steve Normand Yes, you're right. Hoovie would love the DS or the SM. My grand father had a Citroën DS and this is a wonderful car.
I would love to see Hoovie buy a Citroen DS! And he can do a speed bump comparasion with his Phantom.
Another great car would be the W100 Mercedes 600. Or a 1960's Phantom (or a Silver Cloud if a Phantom is over his budget).
Or an Aston Martin Lagonda! How much do they sell for in the US?
I have a DS for sale in Iowa...

Fried egg headlights is the only reason people hate it so much. I owned one and love the way it looked...really.
Its the first gen 996 that look ugly. Those 996.2 are OK.
@@williambremner9022 everyone says fried eggs. But the 996 turbo never had them. Only the Carrera and Boxter had them. It's a horrible misconception.
You got this wrong hoovie!
It doesnt count when you hit the redline while accelerating und forgetting to shift.
It will only count when you downshit too early and force the engine to spin faster than the limiter allows.
Enjoy your car!
greetings from germany
Close. It counts BOTH types of over-rev conditions. Nobody cares about the acceleration counter. Mine had thousands of them. Now the "accidentally shifted from 5th to 2nd" ignition is bad. Those will cause problems.
really? on 996s too? i thought that was 997 only. Thanks for correcting me.
@@charlesml3
When you accelerate, isn't there a rev limiter that kicks in before going into that Big Brother 1984 zone?
There are two types here is the shortest and easiest way to understand:
Type I indicate bumping into the rev limiter on the way up.
Type II indicate possible mis-shifts on the way down.
Nobody really cares about type 1 but type 2.... could be trouble
Is there no tool available to wipe the memory of the redline recorder?
Dude just enjoy the car.
You just bought it and you are already worrying about re sell value.
He cant, he has to sell it because it is not breaking down on him and costing him money.
Jonathan Parker This is his shtick, it’s all a show. Don’t take it seriously.
reminds me of the people who buy a ferrari then don't drive it because it reduces it's resell value...so why buy a car that you can't drive? They fall into the "more money than brains category".
@@muskokamike127 I'd say someone who daily drives a Ferrari is the one with more money than brains. You don't get rich by throwing away money, and driving a Ferrari to get groceries or drop your kids off at school is needlessly devaluing the car. So they don't drive it unless they have a special reason to. Nobody buys a Ferrari to keep it forever, and when the owner inevitably sells it, he's going to want to get enough from the sale to buy a new supercar without losing tens of thousands of dollars.
@@mattcelder like most morons, you take what I said and distort it to prove your point. Where did I say "daily drive"? Where did I say "get groceries"? BTW: as for the groceries comment, did you know that McLaren advertised the F1 was so manageable and roomie that you COULD use it to get groceries?
Buying a ferrari and not driving it is like buying a house and never living in it, buying a big flat screen and never watching it, and if you knew anything about cars you'd know not driving a car at all is just as bad as driving it too much.
BTW: just using the 2005 F430 as an example, and albeit I don't know enough about the various versions to say which is which, but the resell pricing is about half of what they were sold for. So one with 23,000 miles is listed for $98K and one with 7500 miles is listed for 115K. So by putting about 2000 miles a year and enjoying your purchase or driving it rarely at 800 miles per year works out to be about 10% of the value of the vehicle. Well, that's just stupid. Considering they weren't all that special with about 10,000 units made.
Now if you have a limited production vehicle like the Enzo or something? That's a different story. But a regular production run, if you think you're sitting on a gold mine and in 20 years you're going to reap millions by having one with 2000K on it, well, you're in for a rude awakening because I see them going through BJ or Mecum all the time and it ain't a Dino.

I personally love the headlights, especially with the bodykit of the turbo. It looks super elegant to me. I'd take this anytime over a 997, especially considering the money you save!
I've owned my 2001 car for 6 years. I'm still not interested in any other cars. Maybe an electric car or a mid engine Vette could win me over. It feels so good and does everything so well.
The 996 turbo is one of my favourite cars. I drove one a few years ago and loved it, it certainly keeps you on your toes!
They are beastly cars. I have one that makes over 700 hp to the wheels. Certainly a hand full but so enjoyable!

Had one of these, excellent car, here in Norway they do stand out. Will never forget on one occation when a small boy probably three or four years old, pointed whilst turning as I drove past in a parking lot. Came running when I parked, he got to sit in the drivers seat and turn the wheel.
You talked this car up well enough that now I want one!
Do it! You wont regret it. I LOVE mine.
You need to buy a AMC Pacer..you know you want to.
I'd actually like to have a Pacer - it's a car you can actually SEE out of the back corners. I also want a Thing and a Gremlin.
@Forever Conflicted - if you look at them, you'll notice that the Gremlin and the Pacer are basically the same car from the seats forward. It's only the back end that really changed. The Thing, to me, is notable for being one of the few cars where you can replace just about every body panel with a sheet of plywood :)
@Forever Conflicted - Which came first didn't matter. Just meant that they used the same body to start. It's much like the Ford Festiva (not the Fiesta!) and the Kia Sportage (pre 2004). If you park them side by side, you'd go "Hey, someone blew up a Festiva and called it an SUV!" They were both made by Kia, and used a lot of Mazda parts. (Family had two Festivas and I had a '98 Sportage. Loved that car.)
@Forever Conflicted - They actually were great cars, and were worth what they cost. The biggest problem they had, that we saw, was that after 150k, or if you drove the absolute crap out of them, they were prone to engine oil leaks. For the price, after 7-10 years, they generally weren't worth dropping another engine into them, or doing a full engine rebuild. Comfort wise - my 6' father could drive one comfortably, and my 5'2" mother could drive it comfortably as well. The 5 speed standard also did 50mpg through the mountains. No frame problems, no body problems, no weird suspension problems - just the usual for age. Most of their parts were interchangeable with my Mazda 323 at the time.
I suspect that their bad reputation came from people that bought cheap, drove hard, and then complained about them not being the same quality build as a car that cost twice as much. My folks bought two of them - one four, and one five speed - for the cost of one higher quality car. My brother burned out the engine in the 4 speed, but it still took him 4-5 years, and the 5 speed lasted another two or three years beyond that. (he tried to get the engine reworked, but the people he paid to do it did a terrible job and even warped the head. I suspect they tried to bluff their way through it, but it was NOT a standard iron engine. )
@Forever Conflicted - That's one of the reasons I'm driving a 2007 Pontiac Vibe. I bought a 2003 Vibe _in_ 2003 from a car rental company - for about half of what it was new. I then bought this 2007 as a replacement, for $4025, cash, with less than 140k miles. I drove past the moon in the first one, I've put two years on this one, and I figure I have another two to four years, minimum, before worrying about a replacement. It's a Toyota Corolla frame, engine, seats, and most of the rest of it. With a Pontiac badge.
For yours - headliners aren't expensive to replace, an ozone generator can be bought for less than $75 that's good enough for small projects like a car, and the parts are readily available to fix just about anything on that vehicle. Rockauto.com can be your friend. See if you can borrow a carpet cleaner for a weekend, as well.
Great info. I'm thinking of getting one, and I was not aware you could get a rev report off the computer. Thanks!
Since I have zero desire to possess a Hooptie fleet, your videos are generally completely safe for me to watch.
Now that you're starting to make sense, my wallet is in serious trouble.
Don't let Parker drive it.
Doug did a similar observation on the 996 Turbo, based on bang for your buck. The fried eggs headlights can be fixed with an aftermarket mask from eBay
I personally would keep them I like the look
This car is a 996.2. Only the 996.1 had the fried egg headlights.
So glad you bought that Porsche, you will have Lots of fun with it :D
Oh Hoovie don't let those redline numbers ruin the fun of the car for you. I had a similar report once from the ECU of my Lotus Exige indicating that at some point with a previous owner the engine has hit 10,100rpm. On the bright side... I know that it must be fine revving to it's 8.5k redline every now and then!
I'm a big fan of the whole car, plus it's quick! 💯
And they're so much faster once modified!
Tbh this is one of my favorite Porsche’s and I like almost all Porsche’s especially 911
I love hearing this kinda stuff. Makes me realize those who appreciated the 996 aren't in the minority. I love my 700hp 996 turbo!
The new, shrewd Hoovie. I like this guy, he should do videos more often.
The nose on the 996 is legendary and absolutely beautiful so I WILL look at the nose, thank you very much!
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the range 1 and 2 over rev issues aren't from accelerating up to the rev limiter/red line on accel, but over revving from downshifting (too soon) and having the motor over rev against its own weight on decel. Can someone here clarify ? I've put the call into my Porsche Yoda but no response as of posting.
From my understanding, range 1 is an over rev on acceleration. Range 2 is the money shift style.
The Sound of Speed the money shift. Bahahahahaha.
This just in: 986/996: Range 1 is recorded ignitions At the limiter, Range 2 is recorded ignitions Beyond the limiter, aka "the money shift"
987/997/981/991 Range 1 & 2 record ignitions at or just below the limiter, Ranges 3 thru 6 represent "increasingly higher engine speeds" above the limiter
Hence forth, I personally wouldn't be concerned with Range 1 reports on a 996 or Range 1/2 on a 997, as Porsche themselves will apply extended warranty on those models with those rev range hits as they don't see them as potentially problematic. Something about rev ranges 3-6 happening beyond 200 operating hours ago (with 50 hrs being not enough to verify any damages so keep on trucking until you get up to 200 please folks) will also ease their minds on the motors integrity and ext warr may still be applicable.

Wise words Hoovey, you have got a cracking car there....
Fitting a box to limit revs a tad under factory spec would get around the only “problem” with that car.
Im thinking the car cuts ignition already at redline. My 95 Crown Vic did that. Its downshifting at the while going too fast that is the problem. The engine would be forced mechanically over redline.
Sure, I’d want to know if someone had downshifted into the red, it’s soo damaging to any engine

Happy to see a different location for this video!
Quit worrying Hoovie! You will hurt the mezger engine more by babying it. Also, on the models with only 2 rev ranges, you don't have to worry about range 2 ignitions unless you money shift. Talk to your Porsche dealer if you don't believe me. Range one is no big deal, hitting rev limit is fine. Hitting range two is BAD but it won't happen unless you miss a shift and send rpms past 7250, which can ONLY happen from a money shift. Range one happens between 6750 and 7250 and is no big deal. Although an exorbitant amount of range one will tell a potential buyer the car may have been tracked. Please read this and enjoy your beautiful 996! I am so jealous! Also: if the vehicle is tuned, and rev limitter is increased, all bets are off. So hopefully your 996 doesn't have an ECU tune, and if it does, I would revert it back to OEM quickly.
I love the looks of this!

996 Still has the best pooper of all modern iterations of the 911. As a former 996 owner myself, I personally think it looks dope, with the *first* gen 'fried egg' headlights, but the clear corner euro version. Seriously, take a look at some of those early 996's, it'll really grow on you. They are great in their own unique way, but after the nostalgia wears out, they do have their quirks and not the best daily drivers if you were to only have one Porsche. Some die hard air-cooled guys will still tell you there is only one real Porsche and it has to be air-cooled. ;^/ They are just missing out on some great water cooled 911's. Nice find with the Turbo!
Hoovie I sold my 1980 SC -- regrettably.. Then I bought a 1999 GEN ! 911 996 and I'm really happy . I have now have great air conditioning ! As I live in Ga. It's hot here in the summer months..
as these front ends have seasoned on the 996 and many converted to the epic cup car status, the headlight design now seems perfectly priceless
Such a cool car!! Turbo and C4S are visually the most exciting 996s
I live my 996 turbo. Bought 3 years ago and never looked back!
