They are especially beautiful when they are accumulated in all their colour glory. I agree with you, I don't think another series will ever be issued that will compete in the impact the machins had. Belated Happy birthday, Smokey! I agree with you that the Machin design is one of the best, but my favourite is the Anigoni portrait that has also appeared on definitive stamps, most notably from Hong Kong.

You're a brave man - I still have no guts to open my used Machin stamps box and sort it... :D I bought some times by stucking with pre-elizabethan stamps I still have to sort.
