      @@rnodern Hello from the States, NE Oklahoma! I am currently researching interfaces for my GT-1000 to my PC as I know zero about this. I have a sweet amp, Tech 21 Trademark 60w 212 which I will use the 4CM for. So, I also want to go directly into my PC with an interface for my GT-1000. The focusrite scarlet 4i4 seems to be a good starting spot(for what little I know). Have you thought about doing an educational video for an interface or perhaps know of one you can suggest? Thank you 🤟.

      @rnodern  Před 3 lety +1

      @@sirmount9156 will you be using a mic, or line out into the interface? Reason I ask, is that when you have it setup in 4CM, your patches are setup with that in mind. In that, you disable the AIRD emulated preamps and use your own valve preamp. This could be a good or a bad thing depending on what you want. If running 4CM through your amp and simultaneously into an interface with just a cable, you’ll need to pass it through a speaker emulator plugin in your DAW.
      As far as interfaces go, what you’ve mentioned is great. I use a Roland a Octacapture at home. It’s a decent interface with great preamps. The “Auto Sens”feature is its best selling point. Otherwise, just look for how many Ins / Outs you want, what connections etc.

      Thanks for the comment! Glad you found it useful. I can’t say that there isn’t a little tone sucking, after all there’s multiple stages turning analog signals into digital. The cleans sound awesome, But for where it counts, the overdrive tone, I’m relying mostly on the Rectifier to deliver that, with an overdrive in front of the preamp to push it harder. Very happy with the results and a dramatic simplification to my pedalboard :D

      @@rnodern the Core arrived yesterday and I'm 50/50 on it so far. Last night I tried just headphones and it sounded pretty good. Today I tried it straight into the power section of the Mesa and the results were underwhelming. But that was just with presets. Tomorrow I'll build a replica of my current board and see how it does in 4CM. It sounds like you use a similar set up as I'm aiming for, I'll only have a boost and expression pedal doing wah work in front of the amp, maybe I'll throw in a tube screamer just to see what's what. The rest will be in the loop.

      @@rnodern unfortunately I can't get this unit to work properly. Maybe there's something different about the Core, but hooking up in 4CM and engaging the fx loop block results in a high pitch squeel. I can move around the output and get rid of it, but then I'm just splitting the input signal into the front (sub out) and into the return (output). This isn't much use to me and can't find any advice anywhere to make sense of this signal chain I see in the interface.
      Edit: ok this is incredibly bizarre. Before packing it up to return I did a factory reset back to the OG firmware, then decided to give it one last try. It seems to work exactly as described and I noticed that during my first attempt (with latest firmware) the loop had an L...J look to the fx loop box, now it's a solid bottom line instead of dotted. Also the signal split/mixing to the amp return and input is now proper and no longer sending everything to the fx loop. Ghost in the machine perhaps. Or given this was a demo unit from Sweetwater, maybe a previous owner did something screwy with it.

Also make sure the global output mode matches the setup. I.e. not headphones, line, etc. you’ll want stack return or combo depending on your mark v

      Yep, you could do that. Just use the main input and output on GT1000 and connect into your amp’s fx loop. Disable all preamp & emulation in your patches. The GT1000 has 2 more fx loops, so you can add more pedals to those loops if you wanted. You won’t be able to use any overdrive or pre preamp effects in the GT1000 however, you’ll need to run your guitar through any pedals you want before the preamp, then into the front of the amp.

      @rnodern  Před rokem

      Thanks for the question. Hmmm that’s really interesting. First thing I’d check is the 4CM cabling, making sure it’s actually going through your effects loop. Next I’d check the back of the amp to make sure the fx loop is on (not bypassed) and volume is turned up. My dual recto has a fx loop volume on the back. Next check the two master volume knobs over on the left side near the power switch (not the master volumes on each respective channel). Perhaps the delay is sitting in one of those switching loops that isn’t engaged? - in tone studio the part of the signal chain that splits off into two separate paths. Lastly maybe a wet/dry setting on the delay but I’d expect that would also be apparent either side of the send return block. Good luck man! Let me know how you go

If I want the wah to get in my EVH 5150 50W preamp input and the chorus/delay in the effects loop, how does the patch would look like? I am a little bit confuse on that one. I am able to set a patch and send the chorus/delay to the effects loop, no issues there. The confusion comes from the wah I want to go to the EHV preamp. Thank you in advance.

      @rnodern  Před rokem +1

      Hey mate, thanks for the comment. Take a look at 10:05 where I put the delay in the effects loop of my amp. Provided you’re using the GT1000 fx loop 1 in your 4CM setup, anything to the left of the green send return block 1 in the signal chain will be before your amp preamp, and anything to the right will be sent to your amp effects loop. Just make sure that green block with the 1 and the up/down arrows is activated :)

    • @rnodern
      @rnodern  Před rokem

      Also, look at 18:45 onwards, where I move the tremolo before the amp preamp, and into the amp effects loop by moving the FX1 block before the send and return block, and then after the send return block. So, make sure your wah is to the LEFT of send return block.

      Thanks for the comment. Video explains this when the diagram is on screen. 4CM can seem counter-intuitive. The main output of the GT1000 is at the end of the signal chain of the GT1000. Send and return of the GT1000 is mid signal chain. If you cabled it as you have described, you’d be putting the amp’s send and return back into the main input before the preamp. Hey mate, thanks for the question. If there isn’t an effects loop you won’t be able to do 4CM with any setup. Even a collection of stomp boxes. So, with that in mind, the GTK core or full model will be the same as putting a bunch of pedals in front of your amp. IMHO it’s worth it simply because the unit has a plethora of pedals and options all inside one pedal. I’d probably still disengage the AIRD preamps when setting up your patches, and design the patches as if you were setting up a pedalboard that goes in front of your amp. Hope this helps!

    • @rnodern
      @rnodern  Před rokem

      Hey mate, it wasn’t - I just made it for demonstration :)
      For a Kirk lead tone start with the amplifier. Go for the modern voicing on your rectifier, channel 2, or if you have a 3 channel recto, then channel 3. Bass just above half way, mids below half maybe 9:30, 10 o’clock..and treble above half. Presence can add fizz so use sparingly. Then on the GT1000 throw a crybaby wah up the very front, followed by a tube screamer. Chug away and keep increasing the gain on the tube screamer until you’re happy with it. Won’t really need much to push the preamp on the recto and result in a nice tight gain sound. A compressor helps if you’re tapping to keep your notes more consistent. He’d also probably be using reverb in the fx loop. This isn’t a recipe, just how I’d approach getting close to his sound

      Hey there.
      Thanks for the comment. I can’t say that I’ve ever experienced serious hum when playing at rehearsal or stage volumes.
      My first step if I was experiencing that would be to check all cables, and eliminate them one by one.
      Is the hum constant or only on certain patches. Could it be that there is an effect engaged that shouldn’t be? Maybe an AIRD preamp/cab emulation turned on in the signal chain that’s causing excessive noise?
      Also check the levels of both your amp fx loop and in the gt1000. If your amp is expecting instrument levels in the fx loop, but is being sent line levels, that could also cause plenty of noise.

For my Mesa Duel Rec stack, I have selected "TUBE STACK 412 RETURN". This is because the main output of the GT1000 is connected directly to the return of the amplifier's effects loop. I lean heavily on my amp's natural tone. In order to do the same, make sure you turn off any AIRD or cabinet emulation blocks in the patches you design. When designing your patches, I find that it helps thinking about it similar to a traditional pedalboard. Like where would you put the specific pedal (or effect) in the signal path.

      Hey there! thanks for the comment. Good question! So, you do this by setting the master output mode to match your amplifier/ cabling situation. Setting this is outside of the patch design, so you don't need to set it with every patch :) You didn't miss it, I forgot to mention it in the video. :D

      Cool! so you mean other than the L or R outputs in the end of the chain, there is a master output that would determine what I'm using? cause I just happen to make mine sound good on any digital speakers (frfr and or studio monitors) but not on analog gear like a tube amp. I want to set a patch that is all pedals like what you did :( still learning i guess! anyway thank for your time and posting such tutorials, GTK doesnt have too much info in the web unlike the helix and fractal counterparts.

    • @rnodern
      @rnodern  Před 4 lety +1

      @@mikiithe13th Hey again. Yes, there's a master output mode which allows you to "tweak" the output signal to suit where the signal is going. i.e. "Headphones", "Recording", , "Tube Combo", "Katana" etc.etc. Do this in the menu of the GT1000 itself. Take a look at page 36 of this PDF from the boss website: static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/GT-1000_parameter_eng01_W.pdf After quite a lot of playing around with the unit I've learned that, at least with the dual rectifier, to rely more on the amp to lay the foundation of your tone. Clean patches are probably easier to get good sounding tones than your crunch or lead tones; just setup a nice sparkly clean channel and build from there. When designing your crunch tone, what works best for me is to set up the amp first. So, on the crunch channel, I set the amp gain so that it's starting to break up already, nothing over the top, just a nice warm overdrive. Then build your patch around that as you would with traditional pedals. It's easy to get a clipped, compressed sounding tone if you overdo the gain on these overdrive pedals. This is because the signal may already be totally saturated and clipped before it gets to the amplifier preamp. So, now I rarely go above 25% gain on an overdrive pedal. You can also stage them using multiple different overdrive pedals subtly before your preamp. It adds a richness and fullness to the tone without clipping and sounding fragile. Doing it like this drives your already slightly overdriven amplifier preamp in the same way as a traditional pedalboard setup.

    For the life of me I can't get the three channel thing working, I have a dual recto multi watt the same as yours and have done everything I can. I can get the channel selection working fine with the gt 1000 but my green channel signal is either going into the fx return of the amp with the gt's loop off (in which case only the amps master volume works, not the channel volume) or there is no volume at all with the gt's fx loop on. Any suggestions?

    • @rnodern
      @rnodern  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey mate, thanks for the comment. First things first, make sure you're using a TRS (stereo to 2x mono) cable and enter the mono plugs into the footswitch plugs in the back of the amp. In the Master block at the end of the signal chain, and flick Amp Ctl 1 and Amp Ctl 2 and observe what happens to your amp to determine what settings you need to go with for channel 1,2 and 3. I think I know what's happening with the other issue you're having. If only the master volume is working, it says to me that you're bypassing the amp's preamp entirely and going straight into the poweramp. There are a couple of things to sort this out. First, ensure that your cabling is correct. It should be: 1. [Guitar] into [GTK Main Input], 2. [GTK Send 1] into [Amplifier Main Input], 3. [Amplifier FX Loop Send] into [GTK Return 1]. 4. [GTK Main Output/L Mono] into [Amplifier FX Loop Return]. Next, on the back of the Dual Rec, make sure that the dial above the FX loop at the back is set to "Loop On". Lastly, one thing to remember is that ALL 4CM patches need to have GTK Send Return 1 block activated. If you don't activate this block, it will always bypass the amplifier's preamp which could be why only the master volume works. Also, if the Loop on the amp is not in "Loop On" mode, the amp is only getting its signal from the GTK into the poweramp. Please check these and let me know how you go. :D good luck!

Also I've noticed that, in order to get the midi working with my JVM410 I've had to initialise any patch that I was going to use otherwise the amp wouldn't respond properly to patch changes, it would just randomly change channels/ master volumes/ fx on and off. This was highly frustrating as the gt 8 was plug and play in that regard. Thanks for your response and keep on rockin.

      Hey mate thanks for the comment. Fortunately this Dual Rec was made after they changed back to series FX loops. There will certainly be issues with a parallel effects loop :(. What I would probably do is create copies of patches in different banks. And have a “home” version of each patch which has the volumes set for your home levels, and a “live” or “rehearsal” version of each patch which has volumes set at appropriate levels for your amp when it’s cranked. @rnodern  Před 2 lety

      Hey mate, thanks for the comment. There is so much to unpack with the GT1000 and am now doing a whole lot more with it than when I made this video. The answer to your question is no. Well, yes and no. The front of your Mesa express controls are still perfectly operational, provided you are using the Amp’s preamp. You can bypass the preamp entirely if you want to, but your Mesa preamp will be better than any of the AIRD preamps. To make sure that your Mesa preamp is in the signal chain of your patch, make sure that “Send Return 1” block is engaged in your patch design. If that block is not engaged, you’re only sending signal directly to the Power Amp of the amplifier. This could be why you’ve experienced no front controls working. Now, to combine your amp distortion with some of the GT1000 distortions, make sure that any distortion effect blocks are to the LEFT of the engaged Send Return 1 block in the patch designer. This is the same as putting a distortion stomp box before the amp to drive the pre amp.

      Hey mate, thanks for the question. Yep, you can bypass your guitar amplifiers preamp with the way you setup your patches. So, if you disengage the Send Return 1 on the GTK, you won’t be sending signal to the front of the amp, you’ll only be sending signal out of the GTK main output, therefore sending it directly to the “return” of the amplifiers FX loop. Effectively putting your signal straight into the Power Amp. It’s hard to explain, but if you look at the diagram in the video, and imagine that the GTK send return is disabled when you don’t engage the FX loop on the GTK, it makes more sense! I hope I explained that correctly!

So if you’re making your tones with a Dual Rec, do it at stage/rehearsal room volume to get the send/return volume just right, so that you don’t experience that weird feedback sound.

      @@josephkuhlman654 i just had a quick Google, looks like there are 3 & 4 buttons on the foot switch of the 5150 III, but with a single TS cable. This may imply that they’re doing something funky with their switching mechanism. It may still be possible, but you may need to figure out how they’re sending the signals and replicate it, possibly via MIDI

    • @rnodern
      @rnodern  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey mate thanks for the comment. I assume you’ll still want to use the power amp in your combo. You can do this by: guitar to gt1000 input, gt1000 main output to return of your amplifiers effects loop. Set the gt1000 output select to Tube Combo Return (112 or 212 depending on how many speakers in your combo)

      When you’re designing your patches, turn off any speaker emulation, but turn on the desired AIRD preamp emulations

      @rnodern  Před 3 lety +1

      @@juventinos81 it depends, generally the EQ settings on guitar amps are in the preamp circuit, but there are also amps that have power amp EQ’s. You’d need to check the amp’s manual. Or just try it out and see if the eq affects your tone when bypassing the preamp. If your amp has a global EQ that affects multiple channels, it could be that it’s a power amp EQ.
      I don’t think you’ll be able to drive the speaker in your combo without a power amp.

    Hi , about to buy the core model, I have a fender DR & love the tone of that amp.
    If I only want to use the “ effects only “ on this unit i.e no pre amps ...that is possible ? As my DR has no effects loop
    Also I love my strymon elCapistan....I can insert that in the chain of effects ? Correct ?
    Sorry to trouble you :)

      @rnodern  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi there, thanks for the question. Yep, you can use it as effects only. This is exactly how I am using the GT1000. Just use the 4 cable method, so that you’re able to to design the signal path with the desired effects before or after your preamp. What you’ll need to do is first, set the master output to match the amp (stack send, combo amp etc.) to disable the cabinet emulation, and then, when you are designing your patches, switch off any preamp blocks in the signal chain. That way you’re only using the inbuilt effects and none of the AIRD emulation.
      There is a second send and return loop on the GT1000, so you’re able to include the strymon pedal (or chain of pedals) in that send/return. If your strymon is also midi controlled, I would also suggest to connect the midi from the GT1000 to your strymon. That way, for any particular patch, you’re able to engage the send/return that the strymon is connected to on the GT1000, but also switch to a particular patch or setting on the strymon all with a single click of a footswitch on the GT-1000 .

      Hey mate, I do this too. Take a look at my pedalboard now: i.imgur.com/TXMEo6i.jpg
      Okay, so I am assuming you’re using 4CM as described in this video. In the second send/return on the GT1000, run a cable from the send to the in on your pedal, and run a cable from the out of your pedal back into the return of the gt1000. Send/return Loop one is used for the 4CM, and the second send/return loop can be used for additional analog pedals. When you are designing your patch, start with selecting which amp channel you want to use. Engage send and return 1 and 2 (1 is required unless you don’t want to use the amplifier preamp) then place send/return block 2 wherever you want it in your signal chain. If it’s distortion, place it just before send return block 1. Save the patch and it will change channels and engage your analog pedal when you switch to that patch. Note: the pedal has to always be on and engaged, you’re just inserting and removing it from the signal chain in your patch design.
      You may notice I have many pedals. I’m using a Voodoo hex midi switcher. So, the send/return block loop is sent to/from the voodoo hex. All my analog pedals are plugged into the hex. Then, I send a midi signal to the hex to activate certain pedals in my patch design. It’s super cool if you want to combine the GT1000 with multiple analog pedals.
