- Grow your woodworking business with "smalls"! Ready for part 2!?! Often times smaller items are looked over by new builders because they are looking for that build that will bring in a nice profit. In this video, I discuss the power of smalls. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with very little cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

Love this. In less than 60 days I’m quitting my full time corporate job and doing wood working as a means of income. I want more time with my family and more control of our future. Thanks for the videos
Wish you good luck sir!!! 💪🙌
Man, I hope that works out for you! Keep us updated
good luck !! thinking about that myself!
Need an update!
How's it going?
the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. czcams.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
I don't think I've ever subscribed so quickly to a channel. I'm a new mom, and my husband and I live far from family, so I only work on days my husband is off. I've been looking for a creative outlet that would let me also make a little money and THIS just feels right. I've always loved working with my hands and can't wait to make a few of these items.
Welcome to the community! So glad to have you. You are going to love it. It’s a wonderful outlet and great side hustle if you want it to be.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking thank you!
Hundreds of CZcamsrs that talk and talk to show you how much they know and their knowledge. Only one that talk straight to the point to teach US how to make money and that's you my man 💪. I really enjoy and appreciate EVERY SINGLE video.
Thanks so much for your kind words Arnaldo. That's why I started this channel... To honestly teach from my experiences... to help motivate and let people know that anything is possible... You may have to get creative... but it's possible. Thanks for watching!
I’m binge watching your videos.
Good afternoon, Matt. In recent months my home restoration business has taken off again; so I am doing smaller builds in the workshop. My favorite (and most profitable) project is the garden trellis you recently remade the video on. I'm actually using pressure treated fence pickets so my build cost is less than $5! I've sold nearly 200 trellises at $25 each! The best part is that I have a free spot right next to a very busy road in my hometown to set up a sell my items on the weekends!
Man that is sooooo awesome! And yes! I've commentented several times on using fence pickets! Actually the next video will show what I made out of fence pickets that costs less than a 2x4 and lowes sells for over $100! Congrats on the sells and way to improvise!!!
Irs is watching…
So you literally work for nothing… 20$ sales -5$ material leaves you 15$ to pick up the material, cut, drill, assemble + take time out of your day to sell them… assuming you do things right you have taxes coming out off your profit as well
@@martin8829 It seems you're missing the idea of mass production.
You broke down his profit per item.
It doesn't work that way.
1 trip to the store. All materials picked-up(not an extra trip, you go when you NEED to) If you have it on order, it's ready to go when you get there.
At the shop is where the real time is saved.
Every cut is reproduced quickly , production style. You could cut all the pieces in one shift. For all 200 trellises.
A couple more shifts to produce them.
That's not much work for $4000 gross profit.
@@cattleNhay The point? As I once told a loan officer when questioned about depositing cash in my bank account when she was saying some nonsense like, "It's illegal to do that." I could not help myself, "Do not say stupid statements. What is illegal is not reporting your income. I also collect cash for my rental properties and deposit that money, too. If someone writes me a bad check, then we are on a cash basis moving forward. Check our Income Tax statements and you will see we Legally paid tax on the cast received. NOT reporting it would have been illegal since we have made money." Who cares if the IRS is reading these posts? They have to pay tax on what they earn and spend as well.
Focusing on lower-cost higher volume things like this is also going to let you greatly expand your market. The amount of people who would want a $1000 piece of furniture are harder to come by than how many people could drop $30 on something they thing is cute.
Exactly Denman.
And people who are going to drop $1000 aren't likely to be at a craft fair, or event like that very often.
I just want to thank you, because I know you can make tons of money, selling your ideas, just like everybody else does........... thanks for giving us free hope to survive.
No worries Ramon. Thats why I got into this. You've got this my man.
I love owls! Great idea!
Thanks!
I'm a wounded vet and can't do a regular job. I love creating with wood and hope to be able to supplement my income with your absolutely brilliant, informative, and just awesome creations and advice. I love your knowledge, passion and business insights. Keep'em comin' brother! And thank you!
I am a disabled vet with narcolepsy. I can not work a regular job, but want to try something like this.
@@roberthicks1612 I have been reclaiming used pallet lumber, I just saw the boards free. Short pieces are most of what I need to build almost anything! Best wishes and prayers in these hard times!
Thank you for serving!❤ I’m a disabled vet as well and need to supplement my income. Only issue is I’m losing grip in my dominant hand because of a neck injury. I love the idea of smalls and hoping my less dominant hand can work well enough to get some things started. ❤
@@b.l.wilson9724 Keep up the good fight Brother. I hope the loss of feeling stops soon and you don't loose the use of your entire hand. I only have two fingers on my right hand but have to compensate. I hope that you will as well and be able to continue with your passion.

@@boxbreaker4863 thank you. 🙏🏾❤️
Thank you! These ideas are so inspiring! Each year I custom paint Easter eggs for the family and have made display racks as gifts, but as I near retirement, I 'll need to ramp up on the smalls from scrap for some extra cash. These are great!
Video idea. Day in the life at a show. Getting ready, setting up, sales progress during the show, breaking down and a summary of what went well and what did not.
Matt - your videos have been the inspiration I needed to get back into the shop. Smalls are my jam!! There is something very satisfying to me to see finished product. Coasters, bottle openers, recipe book holders, Christmas card holders, candle holders, etc. and with my own twist are filling up my shelves and starting to go out to customers. I've actually made everything over the last month from scraps and material, including hardware, that I already had in the shop. Also, its great to read the comments that your community of followers post to your videos. I've grabbed some ideas about product and the business in general along the way. #gotwood #dirtywood #usedwood #smallsbutnotsmallwood #peach #choosehappy
I love your straight talk. To the point / creative thinking / not just repeating the same thing over and over. Thank you for the great information.
I so appreciate you doing this to help your fellow woodworkers. I have so much spare wood in the garden that is about to become a huge profit!
I watch your videos over and over to help inspire and get me all motivated. You're like the Tony Robins of wood workers. 👍🏽🤙🏽
Your a great man to help all of us watching. Thank you for all time and help Matt. Much applause 👏.
Partner, I just want to thank you for being just simply a good dude!! And I don't give that sentiment to just anybody! I've watched you give of your time and knowledge to help us less knowledgeable and I truly thank you!! I know the more subs and likes you get the better for you and you should get more!!! I haven't built any thing yet but I'm buying material today for the small concealment shelf and I know my family will love it !! I will love it!!! You'll be blessed for giving!!
Congratulations. I'm so glad this channel is growing so well, great to see a channel get the recognition they deserve.
Thank you very much!
Matthew, I love watching your video's. They're very informative and much appreciated. I have been watching for the last 3-4 weeks and have put to use on making a few things and absolutely love it. I am retired (not by choice) and have all the time in the world to experiment and receive inspiration on the things that can be done. We have a lumber mill 3 Mike's from the house that throws out good scrap wood and load up every now and then and use it on many projects. I bought a planner to plan it, I cut down a 100' eastern red cedar tree on our property and have cut many slabs to dabble around with. Many thanks to your video's and informative information!
Thanks for all the great content! I would love to start a furniture business but I’m always so busy it would take me a month to do one piece. I have a ton of pallets and scrap wood that I could do a ton of smalls and make some money working 1-2hr after the kids are in bed every evening.
You're wonderful thank you much for the positivity and motivation! Times are crappy but you have managed to make them better just by sharing cheer and your knowledge! #changinglives
Weeks new to your channel, thank you for your inspiration, I recently came into a bunch of woodworking tools and machinery from a customer who’s husband died, I was doing landscape installation and demo for the past 20+ yrs and came across your channel and the equipment within the same week I love the timing because I’m done with the hard labor and the beating it has done to my body, I’m currently setting up my garage so I can start learning and I’m going to start with the small items, so thank you for the fantastic videos.
I'm glad I came across your page man. I do alot of the big builds and have been for 6 years now but I've been wanting to do something more to be able to generate more income and I've heard from time to time that going small is better or that that's where the bread and butter is at! And similar to what you stated in part 1 video it definitely makes alot of sense I was always just brain fogged in thinking what other items can I do or create and man your videos seriously are 💯 helpful like you have no idea. Definitely motivating for me at least, and a push into the right direction for sure. Thank you for this information you laid out. 🙏🏼 👍🏼👍🏼
Just started following you. Love how you explain that a person doesn't have spend a fortune making things. Looking at woodworking as a supplement for my other crafts at shows. Trying to offer a variety.
Genius....Im not into wood working but install windows for a living so definitely work with it. Love how guys like you don't mind talking about these ideas. You got a new sub
Thank you for helping to inspire me (& others) with your grounded approach to woodworking ideas.
My goodness Mr Peech - these "smalls" videos are incredible! Thank you so much for putting your time into this content.
No worries!
Just want to take the time and see thank you for all the great ideas you have given us. Being disabled of always try to wonder what extra things can I do that wouldn't injure my back, and your projects I just perfect. Thank you for what you do and continue to do what God has bless you to do
I stumbled across one of your videos and I'M HOOKED!!! My husband loves to play with wood and wants to learn more. You"ve totally inspired us and are grateful for kindness and sharing. Looking forward to watching more videos. Thank you.
Thank you. I getting easily discouraged when it comes to making something from my heart and no one acknowledge it. The last part of the video is an encourager for sure for me.
I'm digging these ideas, Matthew. Thanks!
I've been making bottle openers, ones with metal inserts that are handheld, and ones that are mounted on the wall with a bin for bottle caps at the bottom. They're quick to make and easy to sell.
Thanks for the video, Matt. I really appreciate the time you put into these videos and the ideas you provide. I'm glad I found and subscribed to your channel.
Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences with us. I try to absorb as much info as possible with each video, there is so much to learn. Your demeanor really helps get things across and I really do enjoy and look forward to each video. 👍👍
Thanks for watching Franklin! Glad that you like it!
First of all I really enjoy watching your videos started getting ready for retirement maybe it will come sooner than I thought getting my work shop set up buying used equipment and hopefully be able to make what people are looking for
hi matt. we are in our 60's and looking to make easy smalls. love watching your videos. please keep them coming..
Love your videos, I've made the wood ladders, I used mine with black S hooks and created a planter ladder. I found natural rough trim pieces that still had bark at lowes gave a very rustic feel. I became a widow at the start of the pandemic and I live with chronic pain. I wa ted to make a little money. I found power tool sets at the thrift and ordered a miter box with a saw. For a while I was using a Dollar tree saw. My son raiding my tools, burning my drill out and moving all added up to be discouraging. You've inspired me to create again.
Thank you! I have been kicking around the idea of making small projects to help pay bills. These are some great ideas!
Back in the day I tallied up all the consent forms from a tattoo shop I worked at. By far the biggest chunk of our sales were $40 shop minimums. Smalls are good for business!
Man I can’t wait. I’m new and retired. Started turning bows and small things. Now I’m a lot more motivated to make the smalls your suggesting. Christmas ornaments are fun to make on the lathe bottle stoppers. Man you got me going 😂
Keep these videos coming, I love seeing new and fresh ideas!
Great channel. Exactly what I have been looking for. I have a cnc and thinking low cost, mass production, high quality, and affordable pricing for the masses!!! I will watching!! Thanks
I just found you this morning and I am binging!!!!! I love your content and the fact that you put projects on here that can be made for little or no money!!!! You are ahhhhmazing! Thank you so much!
Your videos always give me so many ideas I can do in my small shop. Thank you for the great content.
Great to hear Andrew! Write them down man because they are money makers!
Ty for the great ideas and the inspiration you have given me and I’m sure thousands of other woodworkers out there . Ty for all you do making these videos all takes a lot of time and I appreciate it so much .
The knowledge you're dropping on here is priceless!
I love these videos! I started out a few years ago after wife wanted a barn door console with sliding doors and I became addicted to wood working,. I was making consoles to try to make that big sale. I made a custom pantry size sliding barn door piece and sold for $2700, but now I am no longer chasing those big ticket items alone. I will centralize my woodworking around these "smalls" items like you said.
One thing that is hard for me to wrap my head around is the concept of being one of many woodworkers and how to separate from every other wood worker out there. Maybe it just seems that way, but seems like its becoming a crowded small business idea.
Excellent advice and suggestions as always Matthew. Thank you.
Love these “smalls” videos. Thank you for the tips. I’ve recently done a few projects and love woodworking!!
Wasn't what I was getting into but 2 videos was enough to get me subscribed, literal gold mine of ideas and tips !
I so appreciate you and your videos Matthew!
Dude, I love your videos. I do remodel work and the materials I demo are usually destined to be burned in a pile or hauled to the dump. I live in a very rural, Gold rush area of CA built in the 1850's. I haul old lumber home with 15 layers of paint and batch all kinds of smalls out of it for one of the stores on main street. We both make money and everyone is happy. Smalls is where the money is and if you batch it right, you can listen to music in your shop all day and enjoy the work. Thanks for your videos. Seems like you live a cool lifestyle. I'm seriously considering doing this kind of stuff full time.
I've been doing demolition for a decade.... Can't believe I never thought of saving barn wood and heritage house trim for projects like this... I've even seen slabs of live edge wood get thrown out and I never thought about doing anything with it... Till now
Thank you for what you do. You are changing my life. The taste of the first dollars is so so sweet. I will put it in a jar and get a miter saw.
awesome video brother... I've had my custom shop going for almost 20 years, I do leather wood and metal, it didn't matter whether it was a craft show, flea market or pow-wow, the smalls made the money, I remember many weekends where I would sell $400-$500 worth of handcrafted leather roses in 2 days for $10 each, plus all the other smalls ! I actually designed and made a mini- picnic table similar to the one you showed for the squirrels, but mine held a dollar store salt and pepper shaker set that I included, I sold 2 dozen in one weekend at $15 each, and that was almost 10 years ago.... people love decorations, and useful items
Thanks for your inspiration you can get them square nails at any hardware store I use them instead of the round concrete nails I use the square ones they drive better in concrete and come in 1 pound boxes I’m an old guy downsizing and I want to get out and do some easier things so your videos with the smalls is fantastic thank you
I just want to let you know that you motivated me 110% by watching this video. For someone that has been tinkering with woodworking I finally found my calling. Thank you for making these type of videos.
Heck yea Frank. Get to building!
Dude! Thanks! Recently got canned from an oppressive woodshop job. Scrambling to make stuff to sell the tourists on Mem day. Got stacks of scrap wood I picked out of the garbage... Got some ideas to share w/ y'all as well.
Thank you so much Matt! I just made my first trellis yesterday 🎉 love your videos!
Fantastic!
Matt, I just want to thank you for your videos. On the 7th of April 2014, I was forced to make the decision to put my mother in an assisted home or shut down my fairly new business to take care of her after she was diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimers. The obvious choice is mom comes first, and so I shut the doors to take care of mom. All the while thinking. No big deal I can go back to work anytime, being I have been in construction my entire life since the age of 14. Here it is 8 years later getting ready to turn 58 in May and reality hit and hit hard and got me thinking. I'm too damn old to start all over again from scratch. And one day as I was practicing my lines " High, welcome to Walmart" or "Would you like that Super Sized?" preparing for the very real possibility of what kind of job I will be able to get at my age while watching CZcams with an adult beverage ( Jack Daniels). One of your videos popped up and caught my attention so I watched it. And for the past few weeks, I've been checking out your videos. It never dawned on me that I have a bunch of materials leftover from jobs I've done and tools that are just sitting and collecting dust and rust and not being used. And now kicking myself in the butt for not thinking of doing this myself for the past 8 years. And chances are I probably could have had close to $500,000.00 in the bank by now working from home doing this. Thank you for saving me from the Walmart Greeters position and or bail money for when I pull some smart-ass teenager over the counter for a lesson on how to respect his elders. Again thank you, sir.
I congratulate you on your choices and demeanor .... all the best
@@thefifthwave7761 Thank you.
Oh how I wish I could get a get out of jail free card and do exactly as you explained on teaching the new disrespectful punks some manners . I fear for my kids future on how these kids are acting and not having any respect for not just the elderly but peoples property . I want to make the statement that Not all kids are bad .
You ever think of writing? You have a way with words and drawing people in. 😂 Best of luck in the building endeavor, you should do well!
Yes!!! Furniture is great to build but smalls are your bread and butter! People will drop $15 100 times before they drop $1500.
My favorite scrap wood items are trays and totes. They are versatile and sell well. The blanket ladders are a hit also. Thanks for the great video!
Matt, this is my first video, and I'm not even 3 minutes in and I'm like this guy's got my subscription right away. You're to the point. No nonsense and you're genuine. I look forward to checking out the rest of your videos. God bless my friend.
This was great! I've been interested in the idea of woodworking since I was a kid but didn't know where to start. This gives me a lot of inspiration and the pieces you've created are honestly so cool. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for doing these videos. I'm looking at starting my own business and the advice you are giving is super valuable. Especially to those of us just starting out.
No worries! Im just going off of the years of trials, failures, and success! If I can save some folks the middle part starting out maybe they will stick with this awesome trade!
I’m retired and really enjoy building smalls. All of my material is free but free wood is not always easy wood. My two sources are a fencing supply company and pallets. I make coasters ,planter boxes , wall pictures displays, and coat racks for the most part. All of my material is from torn down cedars fences and a few pallets. Free wood can require a bit of work but the character in reclaimed wood is amazing and people love it.
I am enjoying and learning so much from your channel - thank you!!
As always, fantastic info. Thank you so much! I just love your channel!!
Finally subbed.
Solid dude.
Appreciate you sharing your knowledge for us newbies.
Much happiness and health to you Sir.
So glad I found your videos this is what I'm wanting to do
Awesome ideas Pal. Love the way you are thinking out of the box. I will definitely use your knowledge going forward.
I love this channel. Thank you! You are talking my passions!
Hi Matt, I love these ideas for small woodworking projects. I've been interested in getting into woodworking as a hobby/side hustle for a while now, but building furniture out of pallets and other scrap wood just seems so intimidating, and I would imagine they would be hard to sell just starting out. I might start making some of these smaller items, especially the seasonal items.
Thanks a ton for your ideas Matt. Being a rookie shop, and now thinking about going into the content creation side of it as well. Y'all are great. Thanks a ton
No worries and that's awesome. Just never forget why you begin content creation... mine is to teach... stay true to you!
Thank you for the videos Matt.
I literally just got done cutting down a 4x4 x16 into 1/2 in squares to make coasters. Gonna do quite a few looks
Thank you very much for all the great information and advice!!!You rock brother
Great advice. I'm getting ready for my first street Fair and I am definitely borrow some ideas. Thanks!
Thanks for the vid!! I'm getting ready to tear down my privacy fence and replace it now I know what I'm going to do with all the old wood
Amazing ideas thank you. I will be retiring soon and love working with my hands. This is perfect!
You are truly a genius. Thank you very much for the inspiration!
I love these videos! Thanks Matt for the inspiration
Hi from Australia,
Just found your videos, and love them. Thanks heaps for being so open with sharing your knowledge and tips. This is wonderful advice.
My father in law is giving me his frame shop so he can retire. We make custom picture frames from old barn wood. He has a customer base that is reliable and keeps him happy with only doing frames. We make alot of them but have some down time usually and times can get rough. He refuses to do any of this small stuff saying it's not worth our time or effort! I was starting to make things but hes really made it seem not worth it. Your video has confirmed my suspicions and am moving full steam back into smalls tomorrow as I'm not working this week due to no orders. So thank you! Maybe I will show him part 1 and 2 aswell.
Seeing those candle holders reminded me of the ones I used to make using fire wood rounds I sold primarily to weddings for reception table centerpieces there is so much money in wedding peices they have unreal budgets and if it's cute and the can buy a lot they will
Wow! Just found your page. Such helpful information! I’m retired and thinking of making and selling woodwork at weekend markets, etc. Such good info and ideas from one who’s been there and done that. Thanks for the videos.
Best of luck!
Love your videos my man. Saw your first one and I decided I should subscribe because I just keep coming back for more videos.
Thank you, Matt. The best way I have found for me is to copy exactly what you, or someone else does. Then, I look at it and think, how can I change this to make it mine? What would I change? What would I add or take out? It seems to be easier for me to look at an actual Item (not a video or picture), to get my inspiration to make an idea mine. It takes me longer because I have to build, and then tear down, and then build again, and again. Many times, my design changes multiple times before I am done. However, what I end up with is completely mine, and I am very happy with it because I have spent the time to understand each piece intimately. It may not be the most efficient way, but it works for me. I thought this might help some others who are suffering creatively.
Excellent vid sir. You have a talent for explaining things. Plus you have many tips for the little guy. I am one of those little guys. You have my subscription. Keep up the good work
I'm a deck and Porch builder in the process of building my first wood shop. I run into demo jobs a few times a year where I could keep some or all the wood I tear down. (pressure treated) With a shop, I could clean it up, joint it, plane it, re-saw it, or whatever to make stuff. I get paid to tear it down then it's sweat equity time to make it user-friendly. Plus I have all the scrap from the new construction we do. Already saving all the scrap vinyl sleeve drops for some Ideas I have.
This video is insanely helpful. It's got my thoughts flowing
You did it again Matt. Another great video, your very smart. Keep up the good work brother.
Great advice! Thank you buddy! Just what I was looking for.
Matthew. Thanks for your great ideas
Just saw this and part one and gave them both likes. And why not give a sub, for the amount of content you have it is well worth it. Thanks Matthew and keep em' coming. John.
This video is so helpful, I just started and really appreciate the help planning
