- Grow your woodworking business with "smalls"! Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. In this video, I discuss the power of smalls. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with very little cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

I am a vegetable farmer that sells at farmers market. We do pretty good through mist of the year but in South Texas the summers are brutal and not much grows. I started making "smalls" and selling them from our booth and it has helped tremendously in keeping income coming g in and bills paid. Thank you for this series.
What part of South Texas are you in? I'm in Laredo.
@@Trekzinc Corpus Christi area
What are "smalls"?
@@t-bone9403 small projects that are quick and inexpensive to build
@@woodyriley2844 I'm in Houston and I have a brother near you in Three Rivers
As a lady woodworker, you make things so much easier for me with your tips and how to videos! Thank you so much!
Could you do a video on things you have tried that don't sell? I love seeing the positives and the wins but knowing about some of the losses and hard times would be interesting as well.
Great question!
I would love to see this too
I love this idea!!!
Just a tip to help sell at places like farmer's markets: bring something to do. Have a small, simple project you can work on right there, at your booth. My grandma used to make purses (and other such bags). There was a guy who was always there, and he would make $400-$700 per hour, just whittling a small project. Other woodworkers would only make half or so of what he did, as they didn't have a small project. They'd bring a book or something.
I don't have Pottery Barn around my area but we have Hobby Lobby. The first time I went into Hobby Lobby I completely lost track of time because man they have way to much stuff to look through. So I am in the store and my phone rings. It's my wife and she asks me where I was and when I told her she said "do you realize that you have been there almost 2 hours". That is a true story, 100% I do picture frames and they have probably have over 300 and I know I killed some time looking
I scored a set of 16 full size bed slats at the Habitat Restore, for $8. Those slats are going to become serving trays to sell for the holidays. Thank you for teaching me how to earn a bit of cash with my woodworking. I have followed your advice and am making templates to keep quality high and increase speed to market. Please keep making these types of videos. You’re awesome!
Why Ty! And will do! Go get that money!
Sweet peas I agree 🙋♀️. Doing the same as much as poss in the UK. Wood prices are horrendous here and this fellas got me bursting with ideas! 🤯🤪😂
@@victoriacharlesworth7099 You are a kindred spirit Victoria! Much success to you. I’d love to know what the trends are in the UK. The farmhouse trend is still alive and well here in the US.
I have been in my shop for about 5 minutes and 4 of that was to show my 14 year old where my dremel was so he could carve out a spoon. He's loving woodworking.
I've made thousands on rugged rustic floors lol like you said it's the pitch because all I really do is destroy good wood and then smooth it up and the love it ,,looks like old cabin floors .
For the distressed look, I like to use a dark stain first and then cover the top with white. I use craft paint for the top coat because it dries FAST and you can use a dry brush technique to not over-apply the paint. Less sanding afterwards.

Hey I recently found your channel while scrolling through CZcams. I just wanted to say, you really got me inspired to make a business and start selling my products! I have been building things, doing construction, blowing glass, painting, anything mechanic wise and working with metal my whole life! I’ve always hated working for the man and slaving away at a job I ultimately hated. I saw one of your videos and decided to start my own business doing all the things I love doing most! I want you to know I appreciate your content and it made a huge difference in my life! Keep up the great work!
Congratulations for reaching 200k, Matthew! With videos like yours I'm certain the sky's the limit. Thanks for the work you put into sharing with us.
Thanks Shawn! You guys are awesome!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking A Scammer keeps commenting on my post above. Don't know if you can do anything about it.
Good tip painting black under white and sanding at 120
I watched this while smoking a joint and I decided to play a game , only hit it when you blink , I only hit the joint 3 times in 14 minutes lol .
Dang... good thing I didn't get dust in my eye... bahahaha
Great reminder for not reinventing the wheel. These large companies do the market research, thank you for the reminder as I continue to learn and build.
New subscriber here! Dude, you are the King. There's a guy here in the eastern part of N.C. that buys old tobacco barns and other outbuildings, then turns the wood into furniture. The name of his business? Reinbarnation! Brilliant!
And that new water based epoxy will really bring the grain/distressed look out. And it’s durable and easy to clean. Made a floor standing bookshelf and people love it.
Such a good human.
Why Thank You...
Congrats Matthew. You're really inspiring allot of people to try something. I appreciate your honesty, and guidance you give us.
You are worth so much more. Love your channel. Your are quite an inspiration. Great motivator and grounded fellow. Much respect ✊ 🇨🇦
I love these ideas! I can't wait to get some more time to start making stuff! Thanks so much for the advice and inspiration!
Newbie woodworker from the UK here Matthew, loving the inspiration. I made your planter box recently as my first project and my wife loves it, thank you for the videos keep them coming.
hey! same here, newbie from UK. would like to unite?
Instant coffee can get that amber look too. Make it strong, wipe it on and then remove excess
I am glad I have discovered your channel. I recently decided I wanted to get back into building things again. Haven’t really done much for 20 years. I have lost the passion for my medical field job and hoping to start my own business doing something I used to love. Not sure if I can turn it into full time but willing to see where it goes. Your videos have helped gain ideas as well as getting my own creativity going. Gives me hope I can work towards something I enjoy and can maybe one day make my full time passion. I have unlimited access to pallets for free so I am going to do most of my building from those materials and as I get more tools can grow into other things.
Congratulations on the continued growth and success Mr. Peech.. I love all of your content!
Thanks Mark!
Every time I come across these videos I'm just blown away by how Murder Nova has harnessed the fear of drag racing and channeled it into woodworking! Goes to show life's about the pivot!
Great video Matthew!Thank you for helping woodworkers make a profit! Its definitely tough during these times.
Matthew - I love this series. It is really motivating me. I'm in the process of making several of the things you have shown in the series. Keep up the great work and motivating us all!
Will do! And TY!
Congratulations on growing your channel ! Thank you for all your inspections and encouragement!
Congrats on your success and for sharing your experiences and knowledge with us! 105000 views on this video alone in a week and half is pretty impressive. Keep putting these videos out dude as its appreciated so much!
Love the videos, I've built stuff for my wife, like a plant shelf and a spice rack, I am not a carpenter I was a military career man, I took wood shop in highschool and that's about the extent of my knowledge in wood working. I would love to make a little extra cash doing what you show and I enjoy building things anyway. Thank you for putting these videos together for the benefit of us neophytes.
I'm the scrap King! You talk my laungage!
Thank you for all your info and encouragement! Need this channel for sure
Doors are cool. I removed an old set of garage doors for a customer, made and installed barn style cedar doors for them. I bought the cedar off the shelf at Lowes, milled them down on my Dewalt planer, put them together with glass for $6,500. I wish I could share the picture with you.
Congratulations on passing 200k. I absolutely enjoy your videos and have seen so many thigs that would have helped us, when we were trying to sell at festivals. I lost interest in it because we couldn't sell enough to cover our cost. I've learned so much for your videos that I have been thinking about getting back in the shop and trying some new things, after we get done with the whole-house renovation. I have always loved wood and metal working and you have helped to rekindle and old guys fire. Thanks so much.
I swear, you have ruined youtube for me. You're the only guy I'll watch now😂😂
Your videos are always detailed, interesting, and informational. Not the usual "i saw this for sale and you can build it with wood"
Thanks for the ideas! I've been looking for some small projects that can be shipped easily and fairly cheaply. You've given me several good ideas.
These videos are brilliant. Thanks for taking the time to make and share :)
I make the crates at the end from scrap/left over flooring, lot's of patterns...

Awesome Channel Bro. I've been out of the woodworking game for a few years, stuck abroad anad away from My workshop. You've reminded me of just how easy it can be to make "desirable" items that sell well. You've also reminded me how easily many people in the West will part with their cash! I can't wait to get back at it! Thanks Man!
Hands down, you have become my favorite CZcams channel!
Loved these tips some of them I knew, but had forgotten them. Thanks for remined me of them. Love your videos.

Awesome reaching 200K you deserve everyone of them love watching your video's.
Thanks for sharing stuff like this. This is what America is about. Corporations have made people greedy and not want to share information on how to help others grow. God bless you friend.
Thank you SO much for making these videos!
No worries!
So many great ideas! Thanks!
Thanks for all the great videos, I have found a good source of cheap old barn wood and have started making plans for the smalls and things I m going to make and sell. My son is excited to help as well.
I'm all over your videos! Thanks!
Thank you always enjoy your video lost of good advice
Great ideas, thank you for sharing
Awesome advice. Can you speak to finishes that can be used for food-safe small projects vs finishes to avoid?
Those projects behind you are amazing
Thank You from Puerto Rico.
Had a good laugh when you said we see it a board with handles screwed on when others see a rustic serving tray 😆 it’s so true. I couldn’t believe the prices you said all of these items sell for at those commercial stores. Crazy expensive for what they really are.
You can sell anything to anyone. It's finding the right people to sell to, that's the trick.
Thanks for the ideas and the pep talk!
No worries! You want a real pep talk go check out some of my earlier videos. I get on a roll sometimes.
Great video thanks for sharing this. Ready to take my hobby to sales. Appreciate you
You've got this Jeff. Take that leap and dont forget to be fluid as you test the waters.
The results are amazing
Awesome Channel Bro. I've been out of the woodworking game for a few years, stuck abroad anad away from My workshop. You've reminded me of just how easy it can be to make "desirable" items that sell well. You've also reminded me
Totally love your content and passion to share your knowledge, instant sub!
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing
I've just recently found your channel and I love it!! As a kid I used to buy the country sampler and find things in them to reproduce for gifts. Now I do crafts for craft shows and special orders.
I enjoy your smalls that sell vids as well as your other projects that sell vids. Thank you for the vids
Awesome, thank you!
Another great video! 👍🏼
Great ideas! Thank you
I'm going to try it
I really enjoy your take on the absurd markup on items by some retailers! You inspire & motivate your viewership with your common sense & desire to demystify how many products can be made! Thank you!
Great channel tons of motivation
I just got my tools and ready to
Make some Smalls to begin the fun. Thanks
Thanks David!
Im about ready to retire and i need a sidehustle and i love to work with wood. Got a bit crazy here in cali and decided to diy my flooring and painting and windows and bathroom faucets and cabinets. Just went you tube crazy and learned how to use saws, cut trim and so much more... i have a feeling that im going to be watching your site and getting a booth at the farmers market. Ill be in kentucky and they have some cool antique stores where you rent a space and sell your goods. That may be aomething i do for some extra funds. I dont have some of your tools and i may need to remedy that once i get some things made and sold. Thank you for making these and putting it out online. Im excited and cant wait to set up my shop and garage and house and enjoy my retirement.
thanks so much, I saw my cross on the brag board! my head is spinning with potential projects every video you put out.
Nice!!! I love the planter bench idea!!
Yea! I saw that online and if you notice someone sent one like it to the brag board! Thats awesome.
As someone who knows absolutely nothing about woodworking but really wanting to learn I LOVE your channel. Made my first shelving unit for my sons crystals so different partitions etc and tho not perfect ( told him it's rustic look 😉) I was pretty happy I took your advise and just gave it a go! So massive thank you I'm really enjoying learning from you.
Awesome! Thank you!
I did the planter box but messed up on pocket holes on the wrong panels. I don't throw anything away. So I made another one. Sold two rectangle planter boxes for 85 bucks. Love watching this channel.
Thats awesome! And that "mess up" was just a cheap way for you to learn something. Keep killing it!
