My first memory of boarding a plane was as an unaccompanied minor flying AC L1011 LHR-SIN via BOM aged 9. I even remember the flight number, AC888. Shortly after takeoff I was moved to an empty business class section and spoilt for the rest of the flight by an amazing crew. I stayed on board during the BOM layover while all other passengers deplaned. I watched all the tasks that go on, while the crew showed me around the whole aircraft. The departing crew at BOM asked me to write a postcard home which they posted for me during their layover. The memory of this awesome aircraft and amazing crew will stay with me forever.

What a beauty. Flew on one from Toronto to La Lax back in 1984. I cannot believe it's been that long ago. Yeah I sat in the smoking section to boot, back and forth.

In about 1975, I was a 13 year old passenger on an AC L1011 with my parents and was blown away by the spacious cabin with two aisles! 13 years later, I was now a commercial pilot and flew L1011’s as a copilot for BA from 1989 to 1992…..the flight deck was so large, that we once had about 9 passengers up front all at once for an improvised afternoon tea party, along with a tea cart and a selection of cakes as we cruised from Heathrow to Athens…very civilized! The auto land capability and design was the best of it’s day, far better than the 747-200…

Flew on these YYZ-YVR and YYZ-KTPA. Best plane ever! Wish it was still in the air. I hate flying but the L1011 made it tolerable. Nice landing!

Loved the L-1011! Flew one operated TWA crew on Gulf Air equipment in August of 1988. Unforgettable flight.

The most incredible passenger aircraft, technology far ahead of others. Two people carrying stuff could walk through the door at the same time, a far cry from other passenger aircraft

I flew one from YYZ to YEG, then back from YYC to YYZ around 1972 -- best flights I've ever had.

Best passenger aircraft ever built! Nothing was even close to her.
Had the privilege of flying aboard her a dozen times from CYUL - KMIA or CYUL - KFLL, all on the classic Delta livery.
Roomy, comfortable, smooth as silk in the air and the safest jetliner of all.
Also, nothing sounded like her either with those beautiful Triple Rolls Royce RB211's. 'Twas music to my ears!
I miss flying with her and in seeing her in the skies!

Flew on an Air Canada L-1011 from Tampa to Toronto in '79, and flew on one Toronto to Paris in 86, and flew the return on the same. Then flew on one from Paris to Toronto in April 87 and flew on one Paris to Toronto in January 88. That was the last time I ever flew. Air Canada L-1011-500. 30 years ago.

Beautiful plane....remember flying one YYZ-YVR in June 1981 when I moved to the West Coast, and again 1989 same route on a -500. Last flight was in 1994 on one of the frame they brought back into service out of the bone yard.

Hope that you enjoyed the video John. I am not a big fan of the L1011 or DC-10, but from what I hear Pilots really loved them.

From what I remember Air Canada sold its -500 versions of its L-1011 to Delta in 1992 after ordering the 767-300. However due the economic recession at the time it had to defer deliveries for a few years and brought back 2 or 3 older -100 models from storage in 1994 but retired them for good in early 1996 when the larger -300 versions of the 767 arrived.

I think the L-1011 TriStar was a coming together of Air Canada's partnerships with both Lockheed and Rolls-Royce. In its early years, when it was known as Trans-Canada Airlines, it flew the L-10 Electra, L-14 Super Electra, L-18 Lodestar and the L-1049 Super Constellation. To the best of my knowledge, the first TCA/Air Canada aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce was the Canadair North Star (powered by Merlin supercharged V12 engines), followed by the British-built Vickers Viscount (the world's first turboprop-powered airliner, powered by Dart engines) and Vanguard (powered by Tyne engines), then came the Douglas DC-8-40 (powered by Conway turbofans), which was the airline's entry into the pure-jet era, and finally, of course, came the TriStar.

The L-1011-500 is still the coolest looking airliner ever built to this day.

Sorry I prefer the longer L-1011-200 better. It came way too late and lose most of the market to DC10-30

      @harlequin75 Před 6 lety

I like the aesthetics of DC-10-30 more. But the TriStars were damn good planes.

Trivia - how many people know the original B777 concept was another tri-jet?
