A few weeks ago I flew out of MCI (Kansas City) and I was shocked to see a Boeing 747, DC-10, and L-1101 all parked next to each other off to the side. To my knowledge, these planes rarely flew out of Kansas City International to begin with. It was like a 1980s time machine.

This video is an aviation history gem: It's the only video out there that shows the futuristic powered doors on the L1011 in operation with their awesome badass sound when they lock into place. Please make another video with just a complete opening and closing cycle of one of the doors. For millions of people this sound always marked the beginning of a wonderful journey aboard the L1011 and it will be lost forever once the last L1011 leaves service.

I worked on that very aircraft while at Lockheed! At about 0:19 if you look at the underside of the wing just outboard of the main landing gear you will see a long "stiffener" that the Lockheed engineers decided that was needed. This was only installed on the first 8 or 10 aircraft if I remember right, the wings after that had the additional stiffener added at the Avco factory. It was kind of funny. My crew worked overtime installing these while the rest of the plant had gone from about 6000 down to less that 500. The amount of man-hours they figured it would take was around 50,000 per aircraft. We got it down to about 40,000 and our supervisor told us to slow down otherwise we would be laid off. So yeah a lot of sleeping was done in the wing tanks. Part of that interior being configured that way was from its last years as a Flying Hospital.

      Thx for this comment.
I try to improve my english and i'm a trijets enthousiast, i remember saw them when i was a child🫠
I always dream to fly one of these beautys❤❤
Trijets have something kind of magic or powerfull and savage... maybe like the TGV PSE with his unique train engine profil and 80's color^^
When i was a child Concorde, DC10 and other trijets make me dream...❤
Sad to never fly one of them... but glad to fly onboard A300 and the fisrt A330 commercial plane with Air Inter, beautyfull bird for a short flight to Calvi😎
Your comment is very interesting, not loke mine😂

I have to admit that I loved the way Lockheed Martin made their Tristar engine a part of the airplane tail rather than mounted on top of the plane like McDonald Douglas did. The L1011 had more style. I'm sure the engines of today are powerful that you don't need a third, but the tri-engine on planes did look very cool.

The L1011 always felt the engineers had to have been pilots and artists. Unlike the DC10 which felt like the evil sister that no one liked.

Every time I see a video about the Tristar it reminds me more of how blessed I am to have been a flight engineer on the Tristar in the 90's. It was the first airliner I rode on as a child and was lucky to have been a flight crew member before it was close to it's retirement. I still miss her.

I was just happy to have flown on them as a passenger several times. I would get that tingly feeling when I saw my next flight had an L1011 at the gate. Yeah it was a great day indeed! Don't feel that way any more these days, unless it's a 747

Amazing!! Simply Amazing!! It is a true revelation of things that would ordinarily not be seen. My goodness, I love it. I wish the Cameraman would have taken a step back and videoed the entire plane from a distance (so that we can all identify it) before panning in close. I loved the view of the lower crew rest section. It is very rare to see such. Kudos.

I remember seeing these at London Heathrow, Zürich and other larger airports while changing flights from Helsinki traveling to Malaga. I newer got to fly on a Tri Star, my father flew to New York a few time on these and liked them a lot! The only tri jet experiences I got is from traveling on Finnair's MD-11's and one trip from Helsinki to Malaga I got to sit in the cockpit. My old neighbor was a DC10 & MD11 pilot for Finnair and he took me with him to the simulators a few times, I have landed the DC10 at Kai Tak and the MD11 at several airports. That was an unforgettable memory that I will always cherish!

That is actually not the case. The L-1011 was ahead of its time. In that nice Aircraft new technology was introduced which was in that times only known in military aircraft. As well computerized flying was well improved with the L-1011. It was one of its kind which allows real autoland capabilities, enabled by two auto land computers.
