Scriptural Snapshots: Creation from Nothing?

Did God create the universe from nothing - creatio ex nihilo, as it's technically called? Christian theologians have claimed as much since at least the second century. But a careful reading of Genesis 1:1-2 suggests that creation from nothing is only one of three possible interpretations.
