Is the Soul Immortal? It Depends ...

  • When we think of the soul, most of us just assume that it, unlike the body, is intrinsically immortal. But this wasn't the opinion of many Patristic and Church Fathers. For them, the soul, like every other created thing, is contingent: it comes into being and has the potential to pass away. So immortality is a function of our relationship to God, not an intrinsic property of the soul. And this means that the souls of some people may indeed die when their bodies do.

    Thank you Fr. Kerry
    I've always had this idea sitting in the back of my mind but never found any literature to support it
    I appreciate you digging up representation of this idea from other spiritual leaders of the past
    The analogy of a muscle atrophying when not being used was where my thoughts would go on this subject when thinking about it in the past
    It really does sit well with me and how important every choice we make in a moment has a lasting permanent impact
