  • A secular Jew turned Quaker, Fritz Eichenberg's commitment to the man he called a "rebellious visionary Jew" expressed itself in dozens of woodcuts that have become iconic. Two central aspects of Jesus' ministry, his championing of the marginalized poor and his resistance to violence, especially appealed to Eichenberg. Beginning in 1949 and lasting until his death a half-century later, Eichenberg's religious artwork appeared frequently in the Catholic Worker newspaper to remind Christians and others of just how liberatingly countercultural Jesus was and is.
