Connections 385 - NYT Word Game - 30 June 2024

- The New York Times is back with another new daily word game, Connections! This is heavily inspired by "The Wall" from the BBC quiz show Only Connect. You must sort the sixteen given words into thematically appropriate groups of four--and you only have a few opportunities for error! I don't know if I'll be solving this every day but I'm giving it a shot for now at least. We'll see how it goes. Let me know how you like it!

Ebony and Maxim started a red herring for me (magazines). Jet works there as well.
I'm honestly surprised yellow wasn't the purple category today. I've never heard Chestnut or Saw used in that way.

Of course the category Chris was most confident about was the one I couldn't wrap my head around. Only after the fact did I see how chestnut was connected, but I don't think I've ever heard of saw in that context.
I think I may have heard, kind of obscurely, about something being "an old chestnut", but that's really obscure and I've never heard of "saw" used the same way
I got the Green and the Purple weirdly enough with no mistakes, but i ended up failing because how was I supposed to know that "Chestnut" was not supposed to go with the trees
I got clobbered in this puzzle. I fell for shades of black. Then I fell for magazine titles. Couldn’t pin down the tree category. I did get fuel sources but named it as types of stoves (half point) then I got the purple category right, but didn’t think of hot tub parts. Named it engine parts. Which doesn’t really make sense.
I'll be honest, I don't think the yellow category is easy (or straightforward, as they call it) enough to be a yellow. Also, the purple category was the one I got first today, but I thought the category was going to be "Water ____" lol

Me either; chestnut vaguely but never saw.
Me three. Also I'm non-US, so I wasn't sure about the tree species either. The accumulative ambiguity from those two categories ruined me today.
I got caught on looking for shades of black (Jet, Ebony, Ash and you could say black Cherry though it was a bit of stretch) but luckily 3 of those happened to be trees anyway so I was able to still get them all in the end.
It is refreshing that you do not place artificial constraints on the solves. Like getting them in "order" (yellow, green, blue, purple) in an attempt to create a "score" and make it a competition.
This scoring system of 10 points is very difficult for me. I have had some 9's and normal perfect games. It is enough for me just to have the successful days in Connections and today was not one of them. 😂
@@hopechazz But why does everything have to be turned into a competition? Can’t we just find the categories and be happy with that.
@@retiredump7038I hear you! 😂😂😂 Doug and particularly Art with his tournaments came up with point systems making Connections more interesting/challenging. I find myself being too competitive which is not mentally healthy. These games should be enjoyable and it is best to compete against yourself in my opinion. There are some overly outstanding players in these sites as I am only an average player being OK. 😊

@retiredump7038. Chris also plays Strands very well, without agonising about getting the Spangram first. I'll puzzle away for ages, going out and then coming back in, rather than take a hint, but as soon as I find a word I light it up! 😊
All mistakes on trees...never got rid of chestnut and never heard of saw being an old saying
