In American sports we list the draws at the end of a team's record - in England the draws are in the middle so it would be 8-1-8

I don't know if it's just my impression, but of all the daily puzzles, the Strands is the one that caters most to a largely North American knowledge base. Having not grown up in North America and not with the English language, I have only vaguely heard of The Hungry Caterpillar. Had no idea who the author was or what it was even about. When I saw "Carle" I had to Google it. Not sure if it's considered cheating, but here we are.

I found today’s puzzle pretty easy for a Saturday. Loved the clues for SOLVERS, DIRTYMIND, STAIRMASTER and INEEDAHUG, and the fill (GOESNUCLEAR, SCREAMQUEEN, MACGYVERS, SQUIDGAME, YOGAMATS, etc.) was super fun. “Toaster’s opening” with no question mark is brutal!

Found caterpillar early, flummoxed that it wasn't a strand. Found leaf and pickle, no clue how they were connected. Found hungry; it was rejected. Bumbled around for a few more minutes until I sort of recalled a children's book about a hungry caterpillar. After that, everything else fell into place. I am a 61 year old who never had kids. Is it obvious?

Forsythia is a shrub that is covered in bright yellow blooms on bare branches , very early in spring. Some consider it a bit of a thug in the garden but I love its cheery appearance so early in the year. Fun fact it's named by a botanist called Forsyth who was an ancestor of UK entertainer Bruce Forsyth ( as per a Who Do You Think You Are ). He had something to do with laying out a park in the USA ( Central Park?).
