Lovers' Leap-Cumberland MD Narrows

- A 1986 view from Lover's Leap into the Cumberland Narrows. You'll see the WMRY, National Pike (US 40) and CSX (though I refer to it as B&O) from this vantage point at the top of Wills Mountain.
Of course, the name Lovers' Leap and the legend are both very overworked! And you probably already know about the legend of the Indian girl and white boy who wanted to be together but the girl's father wouldn't allow it, so they leaped to their deaths-assuring they would be together forever! Fortunately my lady's parents approved of us being together and we didn't have to resort to that ourselves!

Also included is a view of Cumberland itself. If one looks hard one can make out the WMRY station area at 2:16, though it's slightly obscured.
Shot with a primitive VHS camera/recorder on May 12 1986. Home video has come a long way since!!
I shot this with a rental unit when I worked for Erol's Video in the 80s-back when cameras and recorders were seperate and awkward (NO camcorders yet)! But, yeah, that powerful zoom was great to have! When Dolly and I vacationed in Allegany/Garrett Counties in the early 80s there were vacation guides in motel rooms; one of which mentioned this place! So I looked it up and went! The cave I knew of because I bought a book on MD caves from the MD Geological Survey that lists all known caves in MD.
I graduated from the high school on top of that mountain (Haystack Mountain = Bishop Walsh High School) back in 1988 while my wife graduated in 1986 the same month you made this film! Freaking awesome!! Thank you Bullfrog for the walk down memory lane!!!
Btw, you can get to the cliffs on that side by walking a path behind BW, past the rectory, where the Christian Brothers used to live up until a few years ago.
Glad I could bring back some memories for you! This was my last visit to the Leap, and been hoping to one day get back up the mountain! At the time, there was an active factory there, and the Leap could only be accessed during business hours, as the drive was otherwise closed. Wondering if that factory still operates, and if access is still possible.
Found BW High on a map, and did see a path going towards the Narrows. Would love to check that out one day too! Thank You for the info-and for viewing! Happy New Year!

+bullfrog1954 don't think ppl can go up there anymore. pretty sure it's because someone burned the building down that was up there.
+Dswick94 I was planning on stopping there Sunday and having a look, as I'm doing a video on theNat'l Pike and that would make a great stopping point. Mght not be accessible anyway; back in the day one could only go there Mon-Fri when the business there was open. But I'll still stop by and see how things look.

tommy2chips Thanx! But-you've never heard the legend about two lovers jumping to their doom just to be inseparable? That's one of the biggest urban legends of all time! Read the description to the vid-I relate the legend there!

Moto Flash really bc I walked up there about a year ago and I seen a lot of other people hiking up the same road I was
I drove up Will's mountain rd and saw the same locked gate with multiple no trespassing signs. I turned around and headed back down even though I would've loved to check it out.
