- SCM Railfan Productions traveled to Cumberland, Maryland to film newly restored C&O Mallet 2-6-6-2 #1309 in operation on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. After an extensive rebuild from being outside for over 60 years, the locomotive steams again pulling excursion trains to Frostburg, MD. Featured in this video is our May 6th visit for the locomotives' inauguration to excursion service and dedication. The engine was dedicated to Jack Showalter, who started the Alleghany Central in Cumberland in the late 1980's using his two Canadian Pacific steam locomotives. Jack started with the C&O in the Clifton Forge working on steam locomotives when they were in service. So in our opinion, it seems very fitting a C&O locomotive would be a perfect candidate to have his name on it. Also featured in the video is our May 21st visit to Cumberland to chase the train up the mountain. The whistle on 1309 is a classic N&W single note hooter whistle from an N&W articulated. This was our first visit to Cumberland in over 20 years!! Sit back relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of C&O steam!!! Nice to see steam again at Western MD.
Magnificent footage you captured here. WMSR in the end did a fantastic job bringing this giant back to life, here's hoping 1309 runs for decades to come.
The 1309 is such a magnificent and beautiful locomotive! Such a perfect restoration! Next, the surviving Allegheny needs to be restored to compliment the 1309! Wouldn't it be incredible to see the 1309 hauling a mile of coal hoppers!!
That was beautiful man! The 1309 is a beaut. I just love the "howl" of her whistle. Thanks for the video.
I'll be there this Saturday! Can't wait to see her
Fantastic video man! Probably right now my favorite 1309 video out there. The shot at trimble was amazing!
Great video, must of been fun getting to see 1309 in action!
Great video!
That’s a Hoss of an engine
Nice video. Good shots of the articulation from the rear on the train. Would love to see this loco in the New River Gorge! The scenery there is nice, not just flatland like so many others. Beautiful restoration of the loco. Thanks
the only operable Mallet Compound in north america
Awesome video! Around what time did it leave Ridgeley?
Between 1015am and 1030am.
@@drpeerless1 thank you so much for getting back to me so fast! again, awesome video man!
What road was the spot at 10:41 I’m going to chase it Friday this week.
1309 is going to have competition when up 3985 is back running
Given the fact there is considerable distance between the two locomotives, I think the competition will be minimal.

Not really, 1309 will still be the only mainline Mallet in operation, so it will still be unique (3985, like Big Boy 4014, is a simple articulated). If the UP Challenger does return to service though, then 1309 will be the third largest operating steamer rather than the second. 3985 needs a MASSIVE amount of work and money invested to bring her back, but here's hoping that group succeeds.
