C&O 1309: The Scarlet Shifter Photo Freight February 2023

- Feb 7th 2023. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and Lerro Productions hosted a special photo charter featuring C&O Ry 2-6-6-2 #1309. The engine had been painstakingly repainted in its original C&O road name and colors. This would be the only opportunity (at this time) to see the engine as it was in service. The 1309 is an H6 class Mallet built by the Baldwin Locomotive works in 1948. The locomotive is a classic USRA design that worked well for the C&O, hauling coal trains and mine runs in West Virginia and Kentucky. 1309 was used mostly in the Peach Creek and Logan areas where it ran back and forth pulling mine runs from the Scarlet mines in West Virginia. The locomotive is the last mainline steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The locations on the WMSR mainline include The Narrows, Helmstetters Curve, Brush Tunnel, Coal Tipple, Twin Bridges, and finally at Frostburg, Maryland. Some of the scenes sre long as the sound of this locomotive is incredible and I did not want to cut out too much detail. The whistle on 1309 is a classic Southern Railway longbell 3 chime made famous by their passenger power. I hope you enjoy this 1 hour action packed video of rugged mountain railroading. If she was going 80, she would be broken by now.
1309 is very much incapable of going 80mph. She might be able to do 60mph in a push but 50 is more reasonable.
So, what was the original whistle on these engines? Yes, this is so much better!

The whistle she currently has is Long Bell 3 chime from a Southern Railway Ts-1 class 4-8-2
I bet someone might install a Star Brass 5 chime on the Mallet next.
Don’t get me wrong, this whistle sounds nice, but was this the same whistle used when test firing before the restoration was completed?
This is not the same whistle from the test firings. That whistle was off a WM 4-8-4 and was in pretty poor condition. This is a rare whistle off a Southern Railway 4-8-2 specifically from Asheville and is in excellent shape!
There are other whistles to end up on the engine in the future, but a Star Brass 5 is not on the list. This Southern 3 will be the regular whistle for when guest whistles aren’t on hand.
Afraid not. The WM J1 whistle Dissappeared after that test fire. It's a pity cuz that whistle rocks. But the Ts-1 whistle here fits her much better

I have a question about your H. Reid Film Collection Volume 8, is there perhaps any other film of southern railway steam locomotives? There is so little footage of Southern steam so I am interested to know if there is any other clips.
