  • I love tests like these. Research before you buy and don't be persuaded by a salesman looking for a bonus. Ask for Evinrude by name.

    I bought a used 97 40 hp 2 stroke Yamaha. Sold boat and bought a used ‘05 115 Yamaha (4 stroke). Also a used Yamaha wave runner with 900 hrs. Zero issues with any of them. Didn’t like the 2 stroke but always knew I was gonna get back to the dock.

    I work in the boating industry. I just bought a new 185 Alumacraft Competitor. I talked with all my dealers (27 of them) and asked their opinion on what they prefer. I also talked to the guides in my area some of them friends and researched on the internet before I made my decision. From best to last this is what I came up with Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Mercury and last was Evinrude. Dependability was a big importance for me. Ended up getting a Yamaha 90 SHO. I decided against Suzuki because there was little dealer support in my area.

      joshua williams not sure about being quieter and have to fish behind both to know mine seems pretty quiet. As far as quicker or more powerful might be against the older model Yamaha’s but the new SHO super high output. I’d have to see it to believe it. I can be full loaded and I’m instantly up on plain zipping across the lake. My friends are amazed with the performance but like mentioned Suzuki are great motors just no servicing dealerships around me.

I had a merc pro XS electrical issues, mercury said someone must have crossed lead wires on battery, thousands later it ran for a week before same issue. They want zero 2 stokes on our local lakes now. It used to be you could have a 4 star rated 2 stroke with EFI but not anymore. But 3 star is good enough for everyone else in the world except Lake Whatcom In Washington. I don't get it. I lived on the lake had to sell my jet skies and boats. I got so mad I moved off the lake. if you're the kind of person buying a ski boat so you can take the kids out on the lake four or five times during the summer than Evinrude wants to talk to you in fact you're the exact kind of customer they're looking for! On the other hand if you're the kind of person that likes to take your boat out two or three times a week again you better start looking at those four strokes like the Suzuki or the cost of doing that and repairs is going to leave you with an empty wallet!!

      Suzuki is taking over the repower market especially in south florida for those reasons you mentioned and they're also less expensive then yamaha or evinrude, which now I see a lot more manufacturers offering them I guess it depends on how you will be using your boat and the priorities you want front and center to determine what brand of engine to go with.

      @@melrose9252 I have owned both yamaha and suzuki engines, my previous pontoon had a 60hp yamaha on it never had any major issues kept it tuned up and maintained accordingly, only had it in the shop once to have a new lower unit installed ran it for 15 years fairly problem free on a 24ft pontoon, as of now I have a different pontoon with a 50hp suzuki 20ft so far have put 297hrs on it and it burns less fuel (as expected can't really compare as it isn't truly apples to apples 50hp on a 20ft obviously but burn less then a 60hp pushing a 24ft) it's very quiet and so far haven't had to bring it to the shop for anything. I can't say anything bad about either of them.

    Forgot to mention how much it really cost to run the Evinrude after buying the expensive Evinrude 2 stroke oil. Once you factor that in the real cost to run the Evinrude was more than all the rest! But then again if you mentioned that Evinrude would not pay you for their misleading marketing campaign!

    There's a reason why Evinrude refuses to let go of the two-stroke design. It's called the profits they make off of that very expensive 2-stroke oil that they love to sell you as long as you use their motors. Their is no other oils in their engines. I'll bring you back to the same age old facts. A two-stroke is a two-stroke no matter how well you glorify it fuel inject it or computerize it! The life cycle of a 2-stroke engine is much less than a 4-stroke and I don't care what they say or how they try to market their product with BS these are facts!!

  • @tolmie1141
    @tolmie1141 Před 4 lety +3

    In the motorcycle world the best engineers available in the world have tried to make a 4-stroke engine that would out perform a two-stroke. They have had limited success with this the trouble is the four-stroke now becomes higher maintenance than the two stroke with a shorter engine life! You can't make power without reducing engine life and cost to run! You might be able to make it run a little better and a little quieter but the bottom lines of physics still apply! That 4-stroke outboard will still be running and costing much less to operate than that Evinrude long after the Evinrude dies and goes to Evinrude heaven! When a liter of gasoline cost more than a liter of Evinrude engine oil maybe we'll talk but until then I don't think so! In the same horsepower rating you may get more performance out of an Evinrude 2 stroke than a 4-stroke but you will pay dearly in repairs and you will lose engine life and ultimately it will cost more for every mile you run it. Albert Einstein had this figured out a long time ago and if you think you can beat him good luck! 😉 Now back to Evinrudes very expensive marketing BS campaign! They show you how you fill the engine up with oil. They so conveniently tell you approximately how many hours it will last but not how many miles per gallon you will get with it. now they don't want to be sued for false advertising but the reality is when they factor those hours they are based on doing a lot of idling. they don't explain how many miles per gallon you will get out of the again expensive Evinrude 2 stroke oil because if they did you would be smart enough not to buy it in the first place! 😂 I see right through their marketing campaigns! It's extremely misleading. there's no way you're going to operate a big Evinrude outboard two-stroke for less cost than a brand new Suzuki of the same horsepower it's just not going to happen! If anything the Suzuki starting at 70 horsepower and above has been redesigned in the output shaft to give you more torque while avoiding a 2 stroke and it also repositions the weight on the transom of your boat. That's what I call smart engineering ultimately the Suzuki is much quieter and will last you much much longer than any new Evinrude E-Tec with their BS campaign! where I live still there is lakes were Evinrude etecs or whatever kind of tech they want to call them are still not allowed! If you're rich and can afford the high cost of running an old Evinrude 2 stroke then buy that. If you use your boat a lot and don't want it in the shop all the time get the Suzuki it comes with a much better warranty gee I wonder why that is. Evinrude will not match their warranty and for good reason! While you're at it if you're not busy ask Evinrude why they won't match Suzuki's warranty?? they're a bunch of liars watch them sit there and back pedal and back pedal some more! There is many upset people with a lot of problems with their new outboards and I'm here to tell you if you work hard for your money don't buy it because it's high maintenance and junk. If you want an old Evinrude outboard you'd be better off buying one from the 1980s or early 90s. The new G2 Evenrudes are having all kinds of problems watch videos and do some reading you'll find out! You don't want to be on the telephone looking for Evinrude to give you a number so you can get it fixed it'll be a long battle with Evinrude!! Suzuki hardly has any repairs during warranty. And if they do they'll take care of you a very quickly there is a big difference. in the State of Florida there is more people that own boats than anywhere in the country and the number one selling engine on those boats when it comes to out boards right now is Suzuki. you're welcome to go verify that anywhere you want. You will see more boats with a Suzuki outboard on them than any other brand!

    I suppose we could build an electric car powered by a nuclear reactor. Okay now we're going to get a lot of free miles out of this up until the point the nuclear reactor needs to be serviced or disposed. After the huge cost of purchase next we find out the environmental impact would be much greater than burning gasoline. Unfortunately due to the cost and the fact that governments are never going to allow us to have this I don't think it's ever going to happen. You can buy an electric car and spend $50,000 on a solar system. Are you ahead? I can buy a lot of gas for the cost of that solar system. 😬we try and we try and our engineers try and try again but you're not going to beat physics that's the problem!! You don't gain on one end without losing on the other and that's the problem and exactly what I learned in my physics class. However you can spend millions and millions of dollars on marketing and as a company you probably will get a head that way to those that are not informed and don't understand physics but as somebody that's knowledgeable in physics I'm here to tell you that you're not going to get ahead as the consumer that way! I want to go fast! I purchase a supercharged mustang! oh sure she will go fast but I will pay dearly at the gas pump and I will pay dearly in maintenance and I will never get the engine life that a would out of a less performance car! Ford may try to market this car with campaigns that never end at the cost of millions of dollars but the bottom line is the physics are not going to change. It's true it will perform well I will go fast but I will never get fuel economy or engine life out of that car! We're back to physics again and it again will not change! until the aliens come and visit us with some new technology we don't understand I'm afraid physics cannot be changed here on Earth as of today!
