Seaboard Coast Line SD45

- Acquired for preservation by the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum in Oak Ridge, TN. several months back is a fully functional EMD SD45 locomotive still with a 20 cylinder 645 turbo charged diesel engine. This locomotive left the EMD factory in 1971 to begin its career on the Seaboard Coast Line railroad as number 2024. This slick black and yellow paint scheme was common place after the Seaboard Air Line and Atlantic Coast line railroad merged to become the Seaboard Coast Line. In the mid 1970s this locomotive received the classic "Pulling for You!" on both sides of the cab under the metallic colored road number and wore this on into the SCL and L&N merger. The numbers 8924 replaced its first SCL number when the locomotive became part the Seaboard Systems and on into early CSX. After leaving the east coast irony would have it making a journey to the west coast joining the massive fleet of EMD locomotives on the Montana Rail Link. It served many other small railroads in post MRL service before finally ending its long freight career in 2012.
The 8924 was acquired for historic preservation a few years back and began to make a lengthy journey back towards its homely east coast. On the way, a stop was made in Kansas City where the SD45 received some mechanical work and coat of black and yellow paint to bring back its old look. SARM took delivery of the locomotive back in October of 2015 where the preparations were made to be put back in service.
Even with paint, lettering was still an issue. Members of the SCL/ACL Railroad Historical Society provide us with drawings for lettering and painting SCL diesels. Some of the lettering was designed purely from trial and error with scaling actual photos of locomotive lettering. After all this was taken care of, the lettering was printed, and it was time to finish up 8924.
On February 5th and 6th of 2016, Norfolk Southern's Company Photographer, fellow museum members and volunteers, and I began and completed the transformation from 8924 to 2024 with new number boards and lettering. Many hours were spent, but were worth it to get it right. On the 6th, a photo and video session was held on the Heritage Railroad in celebration of the completed SD45. A photo scene staged at Blair, TN. with the Conrail Heritage unit made it all the better. Some freight cars were gathered from Blair for a small photo freight. The day was concluded with a night photo session.
A big thank you is in order to the SARM members and volunteers who took their time to help with this project, the ACL/SCL Historical Society for providing the needed diagrams and drawings from their archive, and the NS Company Photographer for his efforts with number boards and applying vinyl decals.

I never thought I'd see one of these SCL classic beauties again! Saw them in action as a teen. Sweet sounding, 20 cylinder turbocharged 645E3! You could feel the vibration on your chest when standing next to one of these with it's engine idling. This is outstanding! I hope that she will be used in tourist train service. (Now if only CSX would sell off the last remaining SCL U36B to a preservation group, ironically the original 1776).
To hear the sounds of one of these sd45's just starting up is like no other! Pure engine magic!
Sweet old girl, love the sound of those EMD's.
man u got that right
A beautiful engine. A lot less horn would help.
Wellcome back to the mainline 2024 you rock
That is one sweet beautiful locomotive
Ohh man, My first train came from Chester Holly 42 years ago. I remember how cool the SCL loco looked way back then in Tampa. Seeing this is like a blast from the past.. Thank you!!!!
What a grand unit! my favorite was always the 16-645E3 but you get almost the same feeling from the V20. And that horn takes me right back to my childhood in the 80's. Used to hear that ALL the time down the street when MKT SD40-2's would cross through old downtown Carrollton. Being able to barely hear the rumble from the house at night and then wait for the horn as I drifted off to sleep.
Love the start up of the engine
That was the best horn I have ever heard.
one beautiful locomotive
I remember the last SCL SD45 I ever saw.
1984 in Winchester,Ky on the L&N.
Still "pure".
Few things nicer in this world than seeing fallen flag railroads brought back to life with these preserved units.
Although, I'd argue these old flared-radiator beasts still had quite a few years left in them, it's nice to at least see a few of them standing proud in museums, flying the colors of their mother roads...
If only MRL didn't scrap their fleet... they had enough SD45s to keep the preservation movement in work for decades, and they scrapped all but the last 3 around 2013-2014.
I used to see the seaboard coast line trains running through the other side of Charlotte NC when I was a young boy
Too epic! Seeing the Conrail heritage unit, SCL heritage unit, AND ex-UP SD9043MAC in the same shot is just perfect!
Now that's the paint scheme I grew up with in Orlando, FL! That's my all time favorite paint scheme. Wish they'd make this loco in this paint in G gauge. I'd love to have an SD45 SCL for my Garden RailRoad in this motif!
Love that horn and the bell sounds on it. Sure takes me back to my childhood days when I started watching trains and even got to know the yardmaster at the depot. Spent many days chatting with him. Oh those were the great old days of railroading.
Key Lock what railroads went thru Orlando? I used to there and Tampa to see family but then we started going other places and this past August we went back. Before then, we hadn’t been in 5 years and the last time we went, I didn’t know much about railroad history. This info would really help me in railfanning in these 2 spots.
AB, awesome video. I lived in Florida for a while and used to watch the EMD's all the time. Nice work.
I watched those colors go by my house daily on the way to the state port. I also saw the transformation from one right on thru to the CSX scheme now.
Great restoration! The only thing missing is an orange and black SCL caboose!
Richard Gerlach or a second unit a SBD system unit with a caboose
+TINY Markipler #2 YEAA BOI I grew up on an L&N line back in the 70s. I used to see those orange SCL cabooses and the gray Family Lines Clinchfield cabooses.
And Judging by the description, she has a similar story in comparison to Great Northern #400 which is the first production SD45 ever built.
Even using the original horn, its, like a time machine taking you back.
More great work!
Cool video
Brings me back to my youth in NC. I made my childhood HO guage set from the SCL. Great looking Loco.
Love the light very cool never saw that before, not up here anyway.
My favorite freight locomotive has always been the handsome SD40/SD40-2 with that big platform. It's a mean looking locomotive. Now, got this thing for the SD45. Weren't they 3600HP engines? Man. and to think the first ones came out @ 1966, or so at that! Gobs of horsepower. I know Erie Lackawanna was taken with the SD45. This Seaboard unit is beautiful.
Nice video. The star up was so cool. From the white smoke to how it hunted for an idle. It's nice to see locomotives like this preserved. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice restoration! I hope she still shines since then..
Music to my ears!
Unbelievably cool!!!
Painted by Railway Service Contractors, Inc Kansas City, Missouri.Photo's of SCL 2024 provided by well known local SCL fan who did blow ups of both sides of 2024 in 1973 from slides taken in Atlanta,Georga by himself and Mr.Bill Folsom.
Look up Fort Worth and Western 2024, short line in Texas. It’s an SD40-2 rebuilt from an Southern Pacific SD45. Looks identical, same number and everything minus the actual paint scheme
Great shots and video! Nice catches too!
Great capture of the V20 monster. But this unit #2024 is indeed a wobbly one :D
Looking sharp!
Authentic right down to the old SCL Mars light!
thes units had a sound like no other clinchfield had a lot of them i sure miss thoes days hell they had a lot power as well
Love the rotating beacon light
First and last encounter with an SCL 45 was 1986 Dolton Illinois during the CSX rainbow era.
Awesome
She does look nice.
Guau vaya ese tren 🤣🤣🤣🤣 rapidísimo 😅😅😅
I like that light red maker light below the regular light and I like how the top rotate as well
best horn ever.........
404 nice shot
Mars light por vida!
SD-45's including the dash 2's were never 4200 horsepower from day one they were 3600 horsepower but after problems with vibration that snapped crankshafts they were derated to 3400 horsepower which eliminated the problem.
Also if you want to make the turbocharger bearings last longer do not open the main battery switch until the turbo electric oil pump shuts off. It's their to cool off the turbo bearings and generally runs for 30 minutes after you shut down the engine. By waiting for the oil pump to shut off you will extend the turbo bearings by several years. You don't want to know what the cost is for a complete rebuilt turbo for a SD-45.
1.) This one was adjusted to achieve this horsepower by one of the previous owners and was not a factory modification. This one should have been 3600 from the factory. I'm not entirely sure it's 4200 my self, but mechanical records and by word of mouth have said they got it close to it when it was load boxed in revenue service. The crank shaft failures definitely did not make them conducive later on when SD60's and SD70's were being produced. Many railroads either swamped the 20 cylinder for a 16 cylinder or do like what you said and derated them (which I believe WC did that to theirs.)
3.) All of our EMD turbo engines have a timing circuit that allows the turbo auxiliary lube pump to run even after the knife switch is pulled for around 45 minutes to an hour. The lube pump actually is triggered by the knife switch being engaged and begins pumping even before start up so the turbo bearing is pre-lubed before engine turns over.
So was the red light on all the time when moving or just when brakes were set. Very clear video wow
I need an 8 hour idle of this for sleeping
Best sounding locomotive ever!!!!!!!!
To all who are concerned - MRL tweaked this loco for mountain helper service in their Livingston Rebuild Center (LRC) and it dyno'd out at just over 4200 horses. The EWG (Eastern Washington Gateway) took possession of this loco from MRL along with the 375. It went to Western Rail from there after repairs became too costly for the EWG.
I wonder if it still is running that. The prime mover has a 78' build date. I understand the crank flexing and breaking issue was quelled with the SD45-2's and I begin to wonder if that prime mover in 2024 is one with an upgraded crank. If we had load test equipment it would be nice to see if it is still getting 4200 hp.
Aaron Beaubien
I know the hogger that was running it on the EWG - he really loved that loco and hated to see it go. I have a bunch of photos and video clips he gave me on a dvd when he was running it. I should put together a video for youtube. Not positive but I believe the crank and stuff was all taken care of by MRL at LRC. I see a lot of changes that have been made to the lights, horn, etc since it left Western Rail. I have a custom painted HO scale model of it in the MRL patched paint!
Aaron Beaubien
btw, it's beautiful! You've done a fantastic job on the restoration. 😉
I appreciate it! It has had a lot of modification to it to return it to its former SCL heritage. The addition of the gyralite is original even fulfills the FRA's requirements for auxiliary lights (so no need to for ditch lights on the front, but there are still ditch lights on the rear). We have added a Leslie type S-5TRRO (with the earlier dome-back style aluminum power chambers just before the RS style came out).
I've taken this project under my wing since 2024 first arrived and it has been my favorite to work on. We have been extensive work to her this past few months and is getting some much needed upgrades. All for good purpose.
There are only beatiful locomotives in this video
Excellent footage. 2 questions. Does any one have an engine roster for this railroad? Are they going to get additional power down the line? Just curious. Thanks in advance.
MAX & RUBY
Did the EMD Seaboard Coast Line SD45 get restored?
20N-645E3B-EC used in SD45M-2 is already replaced by 20N-710G3B-EC used in SD80MAC
Ditch lights on the rear, but none on the front?🤔🤨
hey man, i want to ask you if you are ok by using parts of this video into an another video with the author right of course
Weird light setup. You don't often see a cab headlight replaced by a mars light
It was common practice for SCL and L&N back to have engines delivered like that: Mars light between the number boards and a headlight on the nose. In the case of the 2024, it was returned to its as built appearance.
The Gyra-Lite was a standard setup back in the day, which if I'm not mistaken, was an Atlantic Coast Line Railroad practice and carried on through to the SCL after the 1967 merger.
NEVER GiVE UP
appropriately the horn is a RS5T
+Alex Paumen Almost! It's an S-5TRRO. Not much different between them except the S-5T uses the S power chambers instead of the RS style. The RS style power chambers came along later. Although would have probably had an RS-5T at one point.
Awesome video! How'd they get away without ditchlights though?
The way the regulations are written, you have to have a warning light of some sort. Ditch lights works or a gyralite. CSX has a locomotive that runs on their mainline that has a gyralite instead of ditch lights. They use it on their geometry train.
Oh, okay.
Aaron Beaubien the back of the SD45 has ditch lights
Aaron Beaubien 9969?
That Mars light substitutes. SCL was big on them.
Isn't the motor still cranking out 4200 hp after being upgraded by MRL?
+GN SDP45 Yes. I believe this was done by Western Rail after the main generator went out of it.
What horn is on top of it
Leslie S-5TRRO.
YOU SURE SEE THE DENTS AND MIS-ALIGNMENTS
Harold, considering she's almost 50 years old, she's not a bad looking cruiser!
DDM 45 aqui no Brasil
Okay, why NS? Shouldn't CSX have any involvement in this?
StarWarsTrains CSXT is a "non heritage railroad" even NS thinks this :( CSXT would just screw it up; in other words they would treat it like 8817, keep it for a while, then into YN4, so in shorter terms, hell no!!!!! IfI were to become CEO of CSXT, you would see what anyone in the 90's and 80's could catch, some of the fallen flag railroads that made csx what it is today, and maybe a caboose, and lastly a Donald trump version of 7812.
StarWarsTrains CSX owns seaboard rr
Alan Mexwell not anymore is gone dead
CSX was also the same railroad that went and took a B30-7, painted it in the Chessie System scheme, took it to the same GE plant it was built at, and donated it. CSX also restored the last C&O painted loco on their railroad to a full C&O scheme, and donated it, and also donated a U36B, which would have been most likely scrapped if they haven’t saved it. And your telling us that CSX doesn’t care about history?
If CSX can revive seaboard why not a chessie system locomotive
Alan Mexwell CUZ IYS SHOT
At the B&O museum there is a GP38 numbered 3802 in Chessie paint, fully opeational. Pulls a small train around the yard with passengers. Looks great in person!
Why not donate an original SD40-2 that wore the chessie paint from factory? Rumor has it that SD50 8595 is going to be sent to B&O museum upon its retirement unless wrecked. Its the last engine to ever wear the B&O reporting markings from factory and the last one ordered with said markings.
