The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) starts going out around 40k miles to 140k miles. The most common issues directly related to the transmission going bad is: Loss of power, transmission Jerking, transmission slipping, coolant hose leak, CVT failure, and CVT error message on the cluster or on the navigation screen.
The warranty has been extended on some of these models from 5 years or 60k miles to 10 years or 120k miles. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
3 things to keep in mind, 1. Do not try to accelerate hard, be very easy on the gas, especially when taking off from a complete stop. 2. When you park, keep your foot on the brake pedal and use the parking brake before turning the engine off, this will hold the car with the brake and not the CVT belt. 3. Change the fluid every 30,000 miles.
so basically....
dont drive the car
😅

"....this will hold the car with the brake and not the CVT belt...." Pretty weird statement! Can you explain the scientific basis of your claim please?? %l
I drive my Nissan juke exactly the same as you advise and do the same with the hand brake, I install an extra duty cvt cooler, $65.00 on amazon and the transmission is in perfect condition, over 150.000 miles still going strong

Have a 2011 Rogue & this was my 1st & last Nissan. Had this vehicle for over a year & only nice thing I have to say about it is it gets good gas mileage.
Awesome music. Really takes away from whatever you're talking about.
I don’t hear any music at all so I think that changed.
That's a who problem?
I had a rouge 2014 that required cvt replacement. The cost of the transmission and its replacement was almost the same as the entire car... Luckily it was still under warranty.
I love the Nissan CVT information videos. I have a 2012 Rogue S with a CVT. at 128,000 miles(just beyond the 120,000 warranty). I started experiencing major issues that you have discussed (whining, limp mode, etc.) I had followed Nissan service recommendations of fluid replacement at every 60K miles. However, when it was deemed that I was S.O.L., I did some research. And I installed an aftermarket oil cooler and replaced the original Transmission preheater with one from an SL Model. I came to find that the SL Models equipped with a tow package have the same transmission except for the pre-heater. The SL pre-heater has 2 extra ports for the installation of an auxiliary transmission cooler. I was able to prolong my transmissions life to 180,000 miles. I then replaced the trans with a low mileage unit. and I applied the SL pre-heater and a new cooler, as well as now change fluid at every 40,000 miles (the fluid is disgusting at 40K). And so now I have almost 300,000 miles on my Rogue. I purchased the pre-heater and cooler for around $150.00 and they are an easy DIY project. (although I'm fairly mechanically inclined, since I did replace my trans myself). BTW.....my Nissan Dealer hates Me, because they can't sell me a new Nissan and I try to share my new found knowledge with everyone. And I have found that when doing a fluid replacement with Genuine Nissan NS2 CVT fluid, the capacity with the cooler installed and operating correctly is 8.25 quarts.
I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with over 206,000 miles and I drive it like a TrackHawk.
WoW! I am impressed with your given talent. I am 72-yr old male & do small stuff but you did EXCELLENT. I have the 19-SL Rogue/used Certified and should last me at my age and not driving much. OH yes, AWD in Florida in case of escaping hurricane flooding. You keep up your good work and just impressed.

Good for you Shawn! Great post for changing fluid intervals. What was the brand and model of transmission cooler you installed? When you installed the CVT did you have to do a software procedure to update the computer? Ivan at Pine Hollow had to do a simple procedure to connect the transmission to the computer. He bought a brand new one. He wasn't as lucky as you to find a low mileage used model. As an aside his Rogue transmission died at 180K miles and the trans fluid indicator in the car computer still did not indicate time for a fluid change.
I am from Dubai and own a 2014 Nissan Xtrail. Done 125 K kilometers. super happy with the performance. regularly serviced and maintained by the local Nissan dealer. I do not press on Gas and do a max - steady110 Kmph and avoid frequent braking. In the mornings i wait for the RPM to touch 700 and then driver off, switching ON the ac. No major issues, except for flat tyres !!
The way you drive your XTrail is the ideal text book method and your vehicle will definitely have a long life.

I have 2016 xtrail crossed 110000 km
My 2013 Rogue has been serviced regularly and has close to 200,000 miles and still runs great and handles like it's on rails.
Service is key. If you change the CVT and transfer case fluid every 30,000 miles, you'll get long life out of it. Problem is, hardly anyone ever does that, if at all!
@@1vw4me anything you suggest for maintenance for a Nissan rouge sport s 2017? I have one but I don’t know anything about cars and I need it to last for a LONG time lol.

Im from the Caribbean too but the Tiidas in my country dont have CVTs. Thankfully. My Tiida has already passed 217,000 kms with the original transmission, engine and axles.
I have a 2016 Altima with 28.000 miles , and so far driving is beautiful !!! I drive nice and easy , not crazy speeding actions !!!
3 days ago I receive from NISSAN a letter that they extend the.......WARRANTY FOR CVT , TO 7 YEARS or 84.000 MILES !!!
My 2016 Nissan Altima just went out at 100,000 miles
You literally just said every Nissan car
Furreal tho, I just ordered a 2010 Maxima from carvana with 50,000 miles. Luckily they have a 7 day return policy.
@@byloecelhigh8467 here’s the thing, every car has their flaws. Not every manufacturer is perfect, everyone has their preferences. He basically stated basic mechanical maintenance, changing the cvt fluid every 20k miles, so guess what keep track of it or keep going to the Nissan dealer. I got the warranty. I just got my rogue and love it, just drive it like any other car, keep it a few years or even more. Cars aren’t meant to last forever but if you have things like gap and the car gets totaled you are covered. Do I recommend gap no but it’s a god forbid thing. I fix cars and Nissan makes a reliable car that you can take too and from work, that you can drive locally. Would I say road trip worthy maybe not but if you have to move to another town I’m sure you would be fine. Just don’t floor it all the time, use the accelerator hard for emergency situations only or if there’s an asshole driving next to you. Keep the brakes maintained, and oil changed, and tires in good shape. This will all affect the life of the car. My Mazda CX-7 2007 had major engine problems noted online but I didn’t know till after but it lasted 3 years and it got me to and from work, guess what I kept it maintained, if you get the warranty, cpo, got it locally or live near the dealership like I do it’s nothing to be afraid of.
@@byloecelhigh8467 jd power gave the 2017 Rogue I got a 3.5 out of 5 JD power rating for safety which rates it about better then most cars out there. Just do general maintenance. You will be surprised

A correction: the Sentra still had a regular automatic transmission in 2005 and 2006. They switched to the CVT in 2007. And you can avoid the CVT on the Sentra and Versa, just get the manual transmission.
❤❤❤❤ In love man I say this since I have 11 brothers sooooo this is not my first rodeo. I did buy a 2005 Nissan Sentra at 80,000 miles for about $2500.000 can you show me proof of what your saying because it would sure ease my mind after putting a special additive in it, and putting a tranny cooler on it to try to get my money out of it. Thank you for the post!!!❤❤❤❤
I do love Nissan vehicles, the CVT does scare me a bit from its construction. However I leased for two years a Nissan Altima 2015 I was driving Uber full-time for 2 years. When I got the car it had fifty five thousand miles on it when I turned it in at the end of the lease it had 181 thousand miles on it. I will put close to 200 miles a day on that car doing Uber, I had absolutely no problems with the transmission at all. The only maintenance was done was a oil change every 3 months.
Where did you live? I heard that outside temperature and mountains affected the car.
I also operate uber..would you advice someone to buy nissan serena s-hybrid 2014
So you were driving 5000-6000 miles a month and you changed the oil every 3 months?
My Nissan santra 2007, 14 year 180k mile. It still run great no issues, save gas , go up hill not a big deal it fast, snow time no problem. I love my Nissan 🥰
I own a 2011 nissan maxima and I’ve owned it since jan 2012 and I’ve never had any issues whatsoever. My wife also drives a 2014 nissan sentra and no issues with it either and a few friends of mine as well as some co workers own nissans and i have never heard of anyone having these issues. Lots of people abuse their vehicles and don’t maintain them well so it doesn’t surprise me when i hear this nonsense.
Or they never change out the band
I have a 2012 Nissan Altima Coupe... fully loaded, top of that line, with Maroon leather seats. Drives like a dream, never had a problem with CVT. I keep it in mint condition and intend to drive it until either my or the car's wheels fall off. However, if Nissan brings back the coupe, maybe, just maybe, I might change my mind.
I recently purchased a 2013 Morana Platinum with all bells an whistles.. abolsutlu love it. it has just under 240000 klm.. Having the cvt oil changes next week. Will be changing it every 10000 klm. Engine oil every 5000 klm.
My 2014 Altima has 215,000 miles and has never had a problem with the transmission, never changed the fluid and it’s still running fine.
@Fefv Ffgscb No I would just buy a new car, 215,000 miles with no problems, hell it still has the original belt on the car, never been changed, that’s genuine Nissan reliability. My next car will be another Nissan.
It makes a big difference…driving in 112+ temperatures vs…say 90 degrees. The fluid will boil and become foamy because the transmission housing is so HOT. When cycled like that many times, it degrades the fluid. So, if you drive summers in Phoenix or Las Vegas or similar areas, you should change CVT fluid more frequently. My Altima 2012 2.5 S is at 200,000 miles now…still going…but, I drive it quite delicately…I’m hoping for another 50,000 miles…
2014 Quest cvt transmission went out at 79k miles. Dealership said they had 3 Quests within 2 weeks come in for it, but Nissan said Quest's cvts aren't bad
Appreciate the information. I got a family members that didn't do their homework before they bought the cars from the same dealer six months ago at the same time they both Nissan Altima 2011 and a 2009 Nissan rogue and they both have the Chitt Veritable Transmission CVT transmission . The rogue is already starting to make the winding sound going down the highway between 60 and 75 mph. Typical greedy company knowing they have these problems they charge $20 per quart of transmission fluid. After purchasing the fluid I stopped to talk to the the service tech and he try to tell me there was a special key in order to drain the transmission fluid. You can tell they're just trying to bullshit you to try to get you to bring the car in . I guess since they figured they already screwed you by building a piece of crap transmission in might as well finish it by charging it out the ass for the transmission fluid.
Thanks for the advice i bought a 2013 altima in 2016 with 44k miles on it the cvt went at 150k miles thats when i found out it had issues i spent 5k putting a rebuilt one in i plan on doing what you said about helping to prolong the life of the tranny ,thank you very much.
I got a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder and I switch to AMS oil CVT transmission fliud and it felt better, runs smoothly compared to the Nissan CVT fluid,I changed fluid every 20,000 miles.
Can definitely confirm this. I had a 2011 Nissan Sentra and sometimes it would start jerking out of nowhere. And it stalled a few times when I was at a stoplight
Did you put a new transmission in it?
Glad you got rid of it.
Total garbage!
I have the 12. It’s kinda jerky between 30-40 mph. I had the dealership check it and they said it was fine. If I speed up it runs smoothly. Sentras are decent cars, I would love to know if you figured out why it got jerky.

Hi @Wrench Link, Nissan has launched new models since 2020 (available from late 2019) among them: All New Versa, All New Sentra, Altima and Maxima; all featured with CVT Transmissions. Do you know if these models equip CVT Transmission with issues?
Same same
I have a 2012 Nissan Maxima SV and haven't had any issues yet. Guess it helps that I do my own mechanical work. 😁 I change my fluid every 25k-35k miles.....also don't forget the filter. NISSAN HAS MADE THAT EASIER TO GET TO and keep an eye on your TCM. Good luck everyone
@Hbgn if you pop off the driver's side inner panel and the tire.....its right there
I have a 2008 Nissan Sentra 2.0L with CVT Transmission, it has 211,000 miles on original transmission. I change 1.3 gallon of fluid in it every 30-40 thousand miles using Valvoline CVT fluid. No whines and no bad transmission characteristics. I use a fluid extractor to remove the fluid so I don't have to get underneath and remove the oil Drain plug. Not saying that everyone will get that kind of mileage on their transmission, but I think that if you try and keep the fluid changed in these transmissions to keep the belt from wearing out you will get a lot more mileage out if it! IMHO!
I have a 2019 Rogue SL I purchased new in May. Have just 4,500 miles right now. I noticed you indicated years 2008-2017 for the rogue model. What’s different for the 18 to 20 models?

My 2012 Murano with 82K started having transmission problems. Took it to the dealer and they did nothing but look up the code and told me it needed a new CVT at the cost of 5400 bucks. Just want to chime in on the cvt. I have a awd 2019 altima sl. I've been working at home quite a bit now so only have 13.5k miles so far. The car gets amazing mileage. Overall the cvt is ultra smooth. The power transfers extremely well from the engine to the wheels. There is some rubber bandy feel that I don't super like in around 10mph-30mph. But in the other speeds it is smooth as silk and I really like it. I don't have that many miles but I haven't have a single repair in 2.5 years. Now that there are other awd sedan options I'm thinking about trading it in before I have problems. But in my opinion I think it would go another 20 years because I'm not too hard on the car. Just once in awhile when I need to get ahead of someone.
Questions on your AWD 2019. I'm looking at an SV trim version of that. do you have an update on your car, how is it treating you?
@@JohnnyMaiii I have the sl so the heating steering wheel is nice in upstate new york. I only have 14k miles and 32 months in service. But it is has been 100% so far. I've been using sport mode (button on the shifter) which has been pretty good fun but it does hit the mpg a little bit. The cvt is overall very nice. I'm just going to have the fluid changed every 40-50k and see how it goes. Overall it's a really nice vehicle with great mileage. I'd rather not have the cvt for reliability but so far so good. I'll likely trade it in around 100k anyway.

I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with over 206,000 miles and I drive it like a TrackHawk.
mine is 2015, im still using it
@@NFLYoungBoy223 is that with original transmission? I have a 2010 and I'm a little worried about it lol but mines has 119,500 miles on it
@@NFLYoungBoy223 cuz me and my bf has a lead foot lol
ha ley yes it’s original never changed the CVT fluid either
I don’t know but he didn’t convince me I think CVT transmission are great there are many different functions compared to regular transmissions look them up
CVTs are good, they save gas and they are smoother than Automatic transmissions that's why car manufacturers are going for CVTs. The Nissan (Jatco Ltd) CVTs are the problem...
@@WrenchLink So I have a 2016 Sentra SV. Does that have a Jacto?
You are right. Not all CVT are made the same. The issue are the CVT made by Jatco used in Nissan cars. Subaru, Toyota and Honda cvt are totally fine.
@@southcarolinar6167 All nissan have Jatco cvt.
I have a Sentra 2008, it has 127,000 miles, so far no issues, did the transmission fluid and do all of the work. Only that has failed was the catalytic converter, but if the transmission fails I have to junk it. I think you have to do the service every 40K miles and that will make it go longer. So far it runs smoothly and also, don't floor the accelerator, is not a race car, and yeah the transmission won't handle that kind of abuse. I also see a lot of old Sentra's and Altimas out there, I think a lot of the failures have to do with people not doing the maintenance, and the way the drive. You put the pedal to the metal you put more strain on the transmission. I can't really complaint too much, all I've done on that car has been oil changes, tires twice and tune up.
I have a 2015 rogue SL, purchased new , 0 problems to date 55,000 miles on car.
The short problems Nissan had with CVT and recalled for a 2 year period almost a decade ago. It's a click bait video and the guys just reading off a que card. Also missed a bunch of vehicles that have CVT on his list.
I have a 2012 maxima with over 200K miles and still going strong 💪🏾
That just means the workers were not drinking on the job when they were building your car
I have a 2016 Sentra and the transmission was just rebuilt, AGAIN.
I had a 2009 Altima. By the time it hit 100k mi. I went through 2 transmissions and a electrical failure. I will never buy nissan again.
Then that means you're probably taking better care of your car!
Bull shit
I have a 2012 Nissan Sentra S with over 198,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with the original CVT. I changed the fluid every 60,000 miles as required in the owner’s manual. Nissan is capable to be reliable as Toyota and Honda. You haters should learn how to read a manual and drive a car properly and you won’t have any problems long term.
Same. I have the 2012 special edition model. With turbo charged engine and CTV. I have no complaints about the car.
I understand both of you as my wife's 09 Altima is at 161K miles and we haven't had problems. I changed the fluid around 90-100K, then again at 150K along with the filter, but all of these failures that I have heard about around 30-60K miles is sad. I mean to replace the transmission is probably $5,000. That is a stupid expense. Let alone Nissan raised the warranty period to 120,000 miles. So they obviously also agree that they had a problem. I am just saying, after this car dies, we are likely not buying another Nissan. I see it as we got lucky rather than my periodic maintenance kept the car in good condition. Who knows maybe it is the way people drive too. Maybe they manually shift, but it just seems like too many failures at too low of a mileage for it to be the average user's fault.
johnny Macon People with cars covered with dust in the backyard are the ones who didn’t take care of it when it was running and they wanna blame the car manufacturers for they’re mistakes. People these days don’t care about maintenance...they only care if the car can drive and be dogged out periodt.
johnny Macon Now she ain’t got no car. Poor thang smh
When the CVT transmission goes out can you replace it with a regular transmission that is not a CVT
Probably would be extremely cost prohibitive. I wish my 14 Altima had a traditional automatic.
Well, I'm happy that you never mentioned the cvt transmission 2018 Nissan rogue s on your video
I have 2016 Altima....smooth as glass
It's going to start slipping like glass eventually you can't step on it hard like a geared automatic 🙄
I just get 90,000 miles on my sv versa 2012 and the transmission start to failure what can i do?
Replace it, I sell cars ive had to replace both in sentras. One had about 90,000 miles and transmission was totally shot and one that had a little over 100,000 miles
It's $3800-5000 to replace the transmission, probably more than the car is worth. Cannot fix CVT, must be replaced
mine wouldnt let car go over 40 MPH needed to get it replaced 2012 sentra se
Can anyone tell me we’re the coolant hose is that leaks when you have a transmission issue I’m losing coolant and having transmission issues.
All the models you mentioned stopped at 2017 year. What transmission are used after 2018 year? Are they better in 2018?
I would like to know the answer on your question as well. Nobody responded to you. Can somebody help us please?
Possibly because it is too soon to tell or better still they may have upgraded their Jatco transmissions.
Great video! Thanks for this information, because I'm shopping for a newer Quest. My Quest was built in 2005 and have had Zero problems. Just shopping for a newer one, but not with a CVT Transmission.
You're welcome
@@WrenchLink Anything you would recommend to try and extend the life of a 2009 sentra about to hit 170k miles? It just started to jerk a little bit but only under 40 mpg and never on the highway. I'm taking it to the dealer in a few weeks and they told me changing the transmission fluid may not be a good idea
Since 2005 I drove a Latio premium with & a Slyphy & I have never had any issues with the transmission nor major repairs. Am collecting Nissan Serena e-power this weekend.
😴
Thanks for educating us.
Hi i have a nissan march 2012 and it jerks several times when it reachs at the speed of 40kmph on harder acceleration and stops jerks at above 60kmph....does it mean it have a cvt problem
JUNK!
could be misfiring. Have it computer check

Change the fluid with OEM fluid.

Thanks for the advice I own a 2008 Versa SL with 252000 kilometers and haven't changed the transmission oil. it runs smoothly luckily but I don't gun it . Maybe it's light weight and 1.8 engine have helped.
I have a 2009 Sl too with the cvt I love this little wagon! 79k and just changed the cvt fluid along with an oil change and new battery
I agree! Thanks for making this video, i have been telling people about these for years and they still continue to buy these cars. SMH 😂

I have a 2013 Rogue...I believe that I'm having some issues because I have to change the bearings on 3 wheels...please tell me what I need to do...thanks 😊
We had one go out, same year. Under 30k miles. Shoddy parts is the problem.
Thanks for the information. Does 2020 Nissan Sentra SV has the same CVT? Did Nissan fix the CVT problems on newer models?
We don't know. Only time will tell
I know the older Nissans with CVTs Did not have an integrated transmission cooler like they do now. I know Nissan added a transmission cooler in 2013 and up models And that seem to help out a lot.
I’m at 150k but when i was at 50k it did go out and Nissan replaced it under warranty
Yu have an Altima? What kind of Nissan do you have
I have a 2006 murano with a CVT and i just starting to experience the jerking whenever I push down on the gas. What should I do to fix it?
I have a 2015 Rogue SV, with AWD, I got the extended bumper to bumper warranty for 130k miles, So glad I did. In your video I see Nissan extended the CVT coverage from 5y60k to 10y120k , Good !! I plan to get rid of my Rogue before the warranty runs out.
I bought it used, off lease vehicle with 30k miles on it already, I have it up to 81k miles now. I had my CVT fluid changed at 65k miles. The dealer was like "oh we dont recommend that" Yeah right sure, so when the CVT fails they can tell me its my fault for not changing that fluid. Owners manual says to do it, I do it.
My wifes transmission went bang in her Rogue two days ago. As the car is 9 years old with only 118K Nissan are replacing it under the warranty extension.
Good thing that it was under WARRANTY still!
It’s good that it was under warranty, my wife’s Rogue went out a few months ago with only 80,000 miles while no longer under warranty. 😩
Thanks for your information,
Now I start to lose my mind, I have Nissan rogue 2012. 82,000km on it when I went to Nissan dealer asking them to change CVT fluid, they highly recommend that do not change that fluid!!!!! I am really confused what should I do. If I listen to videos like your and compare to what Nissan company says I feel frustrated.
Any help
Ali Samir Change your CVT fluid now and just don’t listen to the dealer. Plenty of CZcams videos on how to do it yourself, it’s not that difficult. Use only Nissan fluid and no aftermarket fluid. Change it every 30K miles and drive the car conservatively. These Jatco transmission are the worst CVT out there. If you plan to get 150K to 200K miles out of this car good luck !
@@alisamir7479 go ahead and change the cvt fluid, make sure the level is correct, and after that disconnect the battery for a night , that will reset the transmission control module. I hope I helped
2007 Altimas have it?
How many liters of CVT oil should be in the vehicle at all times? The oil light went off even though I just had my oil changed and flushed out the CVT oil. How much should be left after the flush? The oil light is on and the car hardly accelerates.
I have a 2010 Nissan Sentra SR with 212,372 miles on it. I changed the fluid once, at 10,000 miles. Haven't had any problems with the CVT although it seems to whine some on long highway trips. By this time of the CVT goes out, so does the car. Bonus info. I started getting a check engine soon light with a code for an underperforming catalytic converter. I would erase the code, but it would return at ever shorter intervals. So, I looked around and came across a Scotty Kilmer video where he said to try putting in a gallon of lacquer thinner in a full tank of gas and drive the car on a long highway speed trip. I tried it and the code hasn't come back. So, I guess Scotty Kilmer was right.
I can agree about the Murano. Its transmission sucks too. IT IS A 1 GEAR WHAT THE HECK!
Beautiful car but not so beautiful transmission
