Shield Hero and MISOGYNY

The Rising of the Shield Hero has created a lot of controversy, particularly due to the early storyline involving Myne (or Malty, you know I'm not typing her official name in a CZcams description) making the false accusations that caused the initial problems Naofumi had to face.
I took a look back at the things many commentators and reviewers found 'problematic' about this plotline and other elements of the series, and decided to talk about what I think about both the content of Shield Hero and those takes.
This is a defense of why the author chose to include these elements and why they work in the plot, but since I'm a chick I wouldn't be surprised if some people get angry at the title of the video without watching it, so the comments could get fun!
Check out my new second channel where I talk about Western TV and movies at: ‪@nataliexhuntertv‬ - it's brand new and I really need the support!

That’s pretty much what happened to Motoyastu.
After being abandoned by his (all female) party, and accused of sexual assault by Myne/Bitch, he has a mental breakdown and defaults to *all women* being bad (funny how a womanizer defaults to incel misogyny after facing thorough rejection from women he associated himself with [even before isekai-ing], and not seeing his own faults for how things turned out [placing his trust in the wrong people due to their gender alone]). His curse series (being the sin of Lust) then activates, where he starts to see all humanoid females (minus animals) as pigs; he even doesn’t understand women anymore, as their words just sound like pig squealing to him.
The only creature he develops an attraction for is Philo (is that beastiality on his end?🤔), and becomes one-sidedly obsessed with her (again, incel/stalker behavior).
Naofumi was teetering on that path, but he never blamed all women for what Bitch did to him, and was able to never go down the mentality thanks to his relationship with Raphtelia and other women he meets. Hell, similar to Motoyastu, his party is primarily female; be unlike Motoyastu, he didn’t pick them for sexual reasons (I think Naofumi maybe, currently, showing sign of being Aro; but knowing the novel he does develop feels for at least two girls).

As I will always say to those types, surprise, surprise women are human, humans can be real monsters in the same way they can be saints. Great men exist just like with great women. Terrible women exist just like with terrible men. Neither sex exist as paragons but simply as people.

Words of wisdom. You cannot judge one man or woman on the actions of another, each of us is unique. Of the others, despite being a loner, Ren seemed to think that Naofumi was not quite as bad as others said he was, and was willing to trust him to a point. Of course, the real gem in season 1 is B*tch's lies being publicly exposed for all to see. Her screaming when her lies were detected and she was shocked was just BEAUTIFUL. Payback's a b*tch, B*tch. And yet Naofumi didn't have the callousness to demand her execution. In spite of the crap he's taken, being labelled as a rapist, a slaver and a kidnapper, he's pushed all that negative stigma aside and stayed a good person. Not many can do that.

Some people just cant accept that evil doesn’t have a set gender. It’s probably because we have so many shows/movies where the villain HAS to have a reason or a sad backstory to justify their actions. So a character like Myne that’s evil because she’s simply a bad person is outrageous to them.

Let's not forget Melromarc is a matriarchal society where the word of a woman has more weight than a man's rights. A man is guilty until proven innocent when accused by a woman.

There's an old saying that goes something like "the heart of every cynic is a disappointed optimist". I think this idea applies to Naofumi moreso than the idea that he hates women because they remind him of Myne. It's caution moreso than outright prejudice, it's just that he overcorrects from time to time. And while this story is a bit of an extreme example (with the woman in question being outright evil), I think this sort of thing is sorely lacking in western media.
People learn from stories, and a think the lack of this sort of moral in stories is part of the reason why modern men are so disillusioned. A lot of young men idolize women to the point that dealing with the real thing guarantees the very disappointment that leads cynicism. Portraying women's flaws from a male perspective isn't necessarily misogynistic, it's just a natural consequence of writing any story where the genders interact in a nuanced way.

The real problem is that if this was something that was unthinkeable and had never happened, then they could have a case. However, this is something that occurs and we have documented cases out there. It shouldn't be barred from being represented in media and the people who are attacking the show for it should focus their energy on attacking people like the princess instead instead of throwing a curtain over these cases just like the real perpetrators used to do and still do to this date.
Also, if you take a victim of SA and the person feels repulsion for men after and projects it into other innocent men, no one will acuse them of misandry but say they need time to heal. If they go on acting on it forever with malice and prejudice, the it may be a problem but I doubt even then the people who criticized the show will pile up on the person like this. Truthfully, an accusation like this can be one of the worst things you do to someone because it can end their reputation, career, friends, even family ties, and it may lead to several mental problems as depressions and trust issues, even suicidal thoughts. There have been nore than one case to support this.
The problem is that people who want to take these accusations seriously, don't end up taking false accusations seriously at all. Even in this case, they blame the victim and try to silence this problem like it doesn't exist, just like the people they are against (the real perpetrators of such acts) did in the past. On the long run, this disregard for the truth behind a statement and these false accusations end up discrediting real accusations more than a piece of media using this as a plot point. People who falsely accused someone and were proved ro be lying should get the heat, because they are the real problem and the fact they are protected and cuddled and do not suffer the same repeecursions just embolden these horrible people.

I'm sure Naofumi never wanted them dead in the first place anyways, keeping in mind that he had seen how rough and different that world is, having come clear that it isn't a game but more brutal than the "real world" he came from, wanting to make an actual change, as the shield hero is supposed to.

i think the problem with it was that naofumi's initial arc put a spotlight on the situation for men who have legitemate reasons to be absolutely hateful of women and the society that enables them to destroy people's lives for their sick and twisted self satisfaction.
we have lived through a good few years where the mainstream narrative was that abuse and horrendous mental anguish was only inflicted by men on women whole degrading and denying basic human decency to the men who did undergo completely social destruction at the hands of hateful women

Sometimes it’s not even cause their hateful sometimes it’s cause they don’t wanna face the consequences of their actions like the women that accused a men and ruined his football career before it could even start why you ask? Cause she didn’t want the guy she liked to find out. Yup she ruined a man’s life cause she didn’t want her crush to find out.

Yeah, but, as with the story, Naofumi at first mistrusts and hates all women, but he learns quickly to instead only hate the actual betrayer, and to view people as individuals. That's probably the same progression of thinking most people go on after being very badly harmed by someone else. I had an abusive ex (not the recent one I've talked about in videos, he is a good person, but the one before him). He was American. For a long time I was kinda prejudiced against American men because of that. But, a lot of my friends are American men. So over time I let go of that 'I will never trust an American man again' thing. But it is a natural reaction to take some traits of the person who traumatised you and be mistrusting of any unrelated person who also has them. The author got this. First Naofumi hates women because of Myne, but then he learns to trust them again. Then, he hates royalty, because of Myne, but then he learns to treat them as individuals too. It's a pretty realistic character arc.

Generally, it really is one of the worst thing you could do to someone. Maybe it depends on the social circles you're in, but I've personally been the witness to alleged incidences of abuse that that did not take place or happen, and when those allegations get out, people withdraw from you, treat you with an air of caution or suspicion, especially in a official setting. The claims don't necessarily have to bear any weight. The accusation alone is corrosive enough.
From what I've seen online, truth isn't even necessarily a part of the equation. People will still view a person as a perpetrator of ill deeds even when accusations laid upon them have been proven false.

I do agree it's one of the worst things you can do to someone, my point was more that in the setting, Myne knew she wouldn't be challenged at all, whereas in the real world at least sometimes a falsely accused man can win in court and the woman accusing someone, falsely or correctly, is questioned about it (though providing proof of guilt or innocence in these kinds of crimes is notoriously difficult). Myne knew she'd be believed, even if her lie wasn't very good.

Naofumi isn't even that misogynistic? He seems to me to be like a normal dude at the start more or less. He doesn't even seem that focused on women, he's not really sexualizing them, or any of that. He is kind of cold to everyone, but he's not like a lot of protagonists in or things like that. He doesn't actively try to force himself on Myne or anything either like you said, which is the kind of thing we have to say because it does happen in media (just not in this show). It's like someone watched another show and thought it was this one or didn't even watch this show at all.
And I wouldn't even call the plot tonedeaf because, it feels like the author knew what they were doing when they made the whole world matriarchal. The same way that we can't ignore the setting of other things when we think about the events in those pieces of media we can't just do the same here.

    • @senatorarmstrong4662

Naofumi's reaction isn't any different than most victims of false accusations. We've seen many stories of guys having trust issues and being wary of everyone. Also, the kingdom's reaction was basically how society reacts when it comes to this stuff. Naofumi was blindsided by her sudden betrayal and everyone called him a monster and dragged his name in the mud despite Myne not showing any proof. Their mere accusation alone was enough to completely shatter Naofumi's reputation(even though he didn’t have much of one yet) it’s said to say but when it comes to false accusations your basically guilty till proven innocent and even then your still guilty and I applaud shield hero for showing that. Lord know we ain’t getting that in the west.
And you’d right his anger wasn’t just toward Myne or women he hated the king the kingdom and the heroes.

This is also why I don't consider him a misogynist, even at his worst. He doesn't hate women, he hates this world he was thrown in, he rejects it so profoundly that he can't even taste the food. It's like none of it is real for him, not even the people. But despite what he thinks to himself, he doesn't put it to the test, he doesn't hurt her and he doesn't enjoy seeing her suffer, he doesn't take his frustrations out on this kid just because she reminds him of the woman who destroyed his life. Despite everything, he still sees Raphtalia as an individual.

His trust issues was something he was paranoid for everyone, and he only triple downed on it with Melty because of what her sister did to him.
In fact, I remember one of the first women he actually talked to after getting his slaves, a witch he indirectly helped, was one he actually led his gaurd down for since she was being nice to him, and was the first person he had said "thank you" to in a while, which surprised even him.

Ironically, here in America, women ruin men's lives with false accusations *all the time* ; it's to the point where men won't even give a woman life saving CPR out of fear that she'll use the fact that they bared her chest (which they *have* to for it to work), as a basis to repay him for literally *saving her life* , by falsely accusing him of raping her; just like Mynne falsely accused Naofumi of raping her in the anime. And that's because not only *have* they thrown that false accusation at the man, but the new policy in this country is that the women *must* be believed on the basis of their being women, and so oftentimes men don't even get a *chance* to prove their innocence in court, and end up getting sentenced for a crime they *didn't* commit while the *actual* criminal, the lying woman, actually gets *rewarded* for her crime; often with the *mans money* . That's the whole reason for passport Bros. being a thing; American men literally *have* to fly to a completely different *country, just* to find women who'll treat them like the fellow human beings they *are* .
Don't take this the wrong way, I don't hate women as a whole *at all* ; I *specifically* hate the women who do shit like that to men here in America; those women specifically are literally *evil* , and I think we *all* can agree we hate evil people *regardless* of their sex!

I get what you're trying to say, but you have made a couple of factual errors. Firstly you don't need to bare skin to do CPR (you do for defibrillation though).
Also, baring someone's chest against their will would never be charged for rape, rather sexual assault. I also highly doubt there has ever been a case in court where someone giving defibrillation was accused of sexual assault.
Here in the UK the police and the CPS have to be satisfied that there is enough evidence of a crime and that it is in the public interest to bring charges. Clearly a case where someone had been giving defibrillation would fail on both counts.
Secondly, if a person is charged with a crime, it must go to court if they plead not guilty. It is legally impossible to skip it.
Thirdly, lying isn't actually a crime. Perjury, perverting the course of justice or wasting police time are however (in the UK).
If someone lies about sexual assault, but it is never investigated, then that would be a matter for the civil courts under laws for defamation.
If a false accusation is made which is investigated by the police or even goes to court, then this is indeed a crime.
Applying UK laws, as Naofumi was technically never investigated, Myne actually didn't commit a criminal offence (Of course, stealing from Naofumi, her trying to kill him and the rest of the party, conspiring to kill the bow and sword hero and their parties, as well as the false accusation of kidnapping obviously are crimes).
Although, dragging Naofumi in front of the king after the allegation could be seen as an investigation of sorts. So maybe you could see it as perverting the course of justice and wasting police time. I think a similar offence in the US is Obstruction of Justice.

I would say, at this day and age, that if people are still mad about Shield Hero painting the MeToo movment as bad then i can say it can be used the other way, and that Naofumi is actually a BEST CASE SCENARIO, where everyone sees the wrong publicly, he has his name cleared and gets the trust and minds of the people, where even now, our public best case scenario by far has been Johnny Depp, who had to claw his way back to the public eye, he still hasn't had any apologies from the companies and jobs that ostracized him and His accuser just, ran off. Hell people like Dan Harmon, who was also accused and was proven not guilty, lost everything, and no one has asked him back to his old positions, media once again silenced most of the verdict and his accusor, got off with little to no consequence. That is how it is for men now, hell, i don't remember the name but a baseball player was actively targeted by a woman who made accusations against him to "get that bag", and had to go to japan yo even play again, the woman, barely punished for defamation and false accusations, and the MLB, not a word.

You know when season 1 came out I was specifically looking around to find opinions on this topic and there just wasn't much on them. I wanted to hear someone's opinion who knew about the story beyond what was currently in the anime (specifically a woman's as a guy) because it seemed like it was taking a nuanced approach to the topic but I'd also heard about the harem stuff later and was like "this seems good but if this is all just an excuse to keep these tropes going for typical isekai reasons I don't want to keep going beyond this season."
Thought the beginning could go either way because on the one hand, it's a kind of role reversal when talking about misogyny but on the other hand if Naofumi's mentality were to go on until both becoming a "god" with a harem and a lot of other common tropes it would be very problematic. I think when I was trying to look up info on the later story all I could find was general plot points and how things ended in the webnovel so I just left it at the time. Now that I've seen this and have some more details on the later part of how this goes down I think I'll try to come back to it when I have time.

@5:30 In the story, Naofumi is told what would happen to a NORMAL person accused of what he was accused of. We can infer that a normal person accused of similar crimes by another normal person would receive harsh punishment. However, Naofumi is a hero, which complicates matters. For starters, directly punishing a hero is politically problematic because all heroes' cooperation is required to save the world. Essentially no harsh punishment is possible against any Cardinal Hero unless ALL of them are killed and resummoned. Given the resources countries put into strengthening heroes, them not being punished in a way that prevents them from achieving their goals is important.
Myne's accusation is part of a trap designed to induce the other 3 Cardinal Heroes into killing the Shield Hero. Given our real world's hateful reaction to a known-innocent Naofumi, it's obvious such a tactic is effective given the goal.

The thing that the MeToo movement made clear is the idea that women aren't believed when they're r-ped was a near-total fabrication made by other women and bolstered by hollywood. MeToo brought to light a lot of high-profile ra-e cases that ended up being fraudulent but the woman was always believed and even after being proven false the man who is accused still has his life completely destroyed (Mattress girl, Dukes Lacrosse team, Johnny depp/Amber Heard, Christina Blaisly Ford, etc). Even today women are still largely given the benefit with the most hearsay accusations.
MeToo did the opposite of what it was intended and brought to light how many r-pe accusations are false and pushed by women who were bitter or scorned and angry at a man and wanted to do the maximum amount of damage. It's gotten to the point that myself and others will never give the benefit of the doubt to women if the accusation is over a month old. If you want justice for yourself you need a police report and doctor paperwork *that week*.

I enjoy the fantasy genre as a whole, and feel it would be worse without the depictions of Differing Values and Mores from medieval settings. Sanitizing history, and by extension pseudohistorical fantasy settings, does nobody any favors. I see great value in stories where someone considered disgusting by modern standards is able to redeem themselves and grow out of their perversion. By whining about such stories people are encouraging that sort of person IRL to not bother trying to get better, they'll always be tainted in people's eyes for their dumbarse past.

I never understand why people can't just look at a work at face value. Why do we always have to be sure that the "timing" is wrong with overall current events. Can't we just enjoy a work for what it is? Not when it is? To me the two details are totally unrelated. Shield hero has nothing to do with metoo.

While i agree with the conclusion, i think its also true that the framing and themes presented in the anime/LN does appeal to incels and sexist men. That doesn't mean the story itself is sexist of course. Its like how a free speech absolutist might appeal to racists who want to say a slur, even if the absolutist may be intending to ensure minority groups can speak freely. It doesn't necessarily mean anything about the story or author but it can indicate that use of those themes and elements weren't clear or that there is an issue with execution. I think that's where there is room for discussion.
Besides the framing of slavery as potentially helpful and good for individuals seems like the most glaring criticism. Also the easier rage bait is the Spear Hero with his "fondness" for girls

7:00 What??!?!?!? Lying about rape, is indeed the worst thing you can do to a man, and it's incredibly harmful to rape victims as well. The are very few things in this world as bad as lying about rape. Earlier you mentioned rape victims not coming forward because nobody would believe them. However the reason people might not believe them is that one can lie about it, you need evidence and it's hard to get for this sort of thing. So what we should just believe everyone who claims rape? Sure, it's one idea, but then people can use that for evil. Ideally false rape accusations would be taken extremely seriously and if proven would come with harsh consequences. Similarly to how we want to harshly punish rapists.
    This is not incel stuff.

It is a bad thing to do to a man, but not the worst in most cases (I mean, compared with say, murdering him, and remember we're talking about fiction where anything is possible). It can ruin lives and is genuinely awful, but it doesn't take much imagination to think of things that are even worse that a fictional villain in a fantasy setting could do.

Well, she is full on evil. That's her role in the story. But given the way things were before she accused him, he actually wanted her, though he didn't act on it, and so her forcing him to have sex wouldn't really have worked in the plot. Plus, she didn't need to. Irl an evil woman might do that to get 'evidence' but Myne knew she'd be believed, even in a world where magic can be used to force someone to tell the truth. It was an abuse of power.

on a side note, while I do agree with everything in this video I would like to point out that his lack of compassion, romance, and possible loving is not without reason due to a hidden factor that I believe to be. This being my belief and understanding of Naofumi because of what I read so far in the novels.
With the upcoming 7th episode of Season 3, I am wondering how many people will understand as to why Naofumi himself has been very passive, turns the other cheek, or becomes inflamed with emotion(s) when encountering or being presented with the many interactions with people at his emotional level.

I don't have too much to add as I agree with basically word. The one thing I'd like to highlight is that paradoxical feminist argument that comes up whenever a female character is shown to be a truly repulsive human being. If women can do everything that a man can do, then surely they can be just as evil, right? Only that gets complained about then? Which is it? As you said, I'm of the opinion that it's more misogynist to never show female characters as flawed, even evil.
Especially in an anime that otherwise has so many great female characters, and not even in an anime harem sense.

  • @SpectreBagels

I remember the beginning of the show and there wasnt anything misogynistic about what Naofumi did nor said😅. Hes actually pretty great and how he responds to it isnt misogynistic, its realistic. Nobody is going to treat the person who falsely accuses them of things with respect, and its not as if Naofumi belittles all women cause of Myne, he just hates her and the people who directly cause him harm of varying kinds and was mistrusting of people because of how Myne got close to him and betrayed him, thats not a woman thing its an issue with people in general he develops as evident by the series. But I really didnt get people hating on the show because *LE GASP* a terrible woman LIED about R*PE. Well goodness me, you NEVER have women like that in REAL LIFE😮‍💨

After having an entire county despise him from the beginning even before he has even been accused by Myne, I can not blame Naofume for becoming distant and very distrusting of not only women, but everyone in the country if not world.
He straight up threatens people just to do business with him just so he can get a few Health potions and other supplies- and even through it all, he still has a good heart and helps people albeit in a roundabout way to make it them helping him as if to keep up the Facade of the Shield Devil.
Malty is the quintessential self-absorbed spoiled brat that ironically, a lot of modern western female characters could be written just like her and portraited as the heroes. Which is why a lot in the west had a problem with her.

    • @senatorarmstrong4662
      @senatorarmstrong4662 Před 8 měsíci +2

Honestly if the west had it their way malty would have some overly sad backstory that would justify her attitude and the show would bend over backwards to paint her as a misunderstood character. Or found someway to point the finger at Naofumi. Cause in this day and age female characters can’t just be terrible people they have to have a good reason for their actions.
      And I’m not even joking.

@@MaverickhunterXZero and that’s wild to me nobody deserves to go through what he did cause of some spoiled brat. The only bad thing this guy did was trust myne and for that his life in the kingdom was ruined. I also saw those same people excusing mynes actions cause her father didn’t raise her right and to that I say yes that had a hand in her being the way she is but at some point you have to start taking responsibility for your own actions she’s actively choosing to do those terrible acts so if your gonna call out naofumi for buying a slave(even though it was myne that pushed him into a situation where he needed to) at least call out myne as-well.

In the LNs it's clear that he does hate women specifically for a short time, which I talked about in the video. I don't think that's a bad thing to have in the story or unrealistic as a psychological reaction to what happened to him, that was the point of the video. But the author did intentionally have him experience an irrational hatred of women, specifically, so that means they put misogyny in the plot rather than misanthropy. I was defending it and saying it worked (the story, not misogyny irl), I just wanted to talk about why it worked and why so many people who wrote hate pieces about it weren't getting the point.

And he applauded the anime for depicting what false accusation victims go through even if it’s got magic and animal girls. He said he related to Naofumis anger and frustration of being hated and treated poorly for something he didn’t do. And like Naofumi it was the kindness of others that kept him goin.

I feel like the moral panic for episode 1 unintentionally proved its point. How do critics react to the idea that maybe taking accusations at face value is a bad idea? By quoting out of context statistics for how low the number of cases *declared to be* false accusations.
You know, because Japan's legal system being "stop wasting everyone's time and accept you're guilty" totally results in all those guilty veridicts being 100% accurate. And I'm sure a case like Johnny Depp being threatened to lose his job if he fired back will never ever happen again.

From the way how i see it Naofumi does not hate women all he's doing is being cautious because a stranger is still a stranger including royalty and everyone else as well not only that there's such a thing called Boundaries and how some people want to be approached or touched and if you think about it Naofumi did lighten up throughout the manga and in the anime butt if there is one thing I'm right about the wolf in sheep's clothing at is the worst kind of trickery that anyone can do to anybody and during that whole thing in that episode of the trial back in season 1 and in the manga of the trial the queen was naive to let the king and the princess do whatever they want even though they're on strict supervision she should have sent into both of them in prison for life for their unforgivable actions putting the world at risk and turning half of the country against a complete stranger just for being the shield hero but the real criminals at fault i think are the queen Shadows they watched the whole thing took place from the beginning and they never intervene to remind the hero's church or even the king or the princess that just because the queen is not around doesn't mean they won't hesitate to take action they weren't even trying to Bluff their way into scaring them over it and if you think about it is their incompetence to disobey orders is kinda know what makes the Shadows a liability there are two committed to only spectating and Reporting back to the queen so clearly if you all think about it it's like the queen herself was not cautious enough to do better personally i think the queen is naive and it has what made everything that's happened to the main character to be her fault as well what do all of you think?

Men loved this show because it hilighted somthing society doesnt care about or cares to bring up. Men who have gone through the same kind of pain and well... Never got justice for it. I like how it was handled because the entire point of Naofumi is letting go of anger in order to move on so that he can grow as a hero. Everything he went through mentally is what actually happens when a guy is falsly accused. I just hated that people acted like women cant be perpetrators and men cant be victimized. As someone who thankfully got justice for a false accusation everything he felt hit hard for me. You genuinely grow to hate women and its hard to come back from. I thankfully found a woman who helped me through this but many men dont. I just want people to know that false accusations do happen. Thankfully the show also highlights the importance of not dwelling in that dark mindset because it will eventually destroy the good in us.

Often described as “boring merchant shit”.
I for one always liked it for what it is and have long been excited for upcoming development for the other heroes. Though I'm sticking with the manga adaptation by this point due to the anime skimming past important character moments from S1 finale onward.
