We made butter bread from scratch (here’s how you can too)

  • This is a recipe was from a newspaper clipping from the UK in 1958.
    Ingredients needed:
    Flour - 250g
    Milk - 156ml
    Margarine/Butter* - 62g
    Sugar - 5g
    Yeast - 7g
    Salt - 5g
    Instructions:
    1) Mix 250g flour, 62g margarine or butter, 5g sugar, 7g yeast and 5g salt in a mixing bowl.
    2) Slowly add 156ml milk in bowl and start mixing. Gradually add the milk and do not pour the everything in one go.
    3) Keep mixing until forms a firm and oily dough.
    4) Lightly flour your working area and tip the dough onto it. Knead the dough until is smooth.
    5) Once smooth, oil up a new mixing bowl and put the dough in. Cover with cling film. Leave to rise for an hour or double in size.
    6) Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Lightly flour your workspace and start preparing to shape the dough into an oblong shape and place in a tin.
    7) Proof for 1 hour or double in size.
    8) Pre heat over at 230C for 30 minutes.
    9) Spray water on the dough and into the oven before baking.
    10) Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack.
    If you don't have butter or margarine, lard can be substitute too.
