  • It's been a while since I've put a gear video up on this channel. After testing out the Platypus Quickdraw on many guided backpacking trips this year and also some solo pursuits, I show the filter up close and compare it to two of my favorites over the years the Sawyer Squeeze and Katadyn BeFree.

    I really appreciate that you spoke very clearly and slowly because English is not my first language. Best video so far. Thanks for sharing.

      OldPackMule, It's becoming one of my favorite filters due to it carrying the characteristics I like with both the BeFree and Squeeze. Platypus did their homework before releasing this one.

    Bought the platypus for my daughter before we went on a 60 mile trip last month, it worked flawlessly. She did use a 2 liter CNOC bag with it. Great review!👍🏻🇺🇸

      Droptineful Nice! Happy to hear it worked well for her on your trip. I have the CNOC bags in mind for the future if I ever have trouble with the other bottles and bags I use. Thanks for watching!

    Just wanted to make a quick comment that I enjoyed your review. Quality content and you were very thorough. You earned my sub with this video. Looking forward to more content.
    Also, I had to laugh as you were filtering with that bottle. That is exactly what I look like on every trip, and it typically takes 2 minutes a liter. I use a 24oz soda bottle for my dirty water attached to the Sawyer. Gave up on the Sawyer bags first time I used them.
    Just purchased the platypus quick draw I'm looking forward to using it. Already find it easier to use and love the bag.

      Thanks for checking in Andrew and for the sub. I greatly appreciate it. Those bottles can be tough at times and can certainly increase filtration time. Happy to hear you've been enjoying the Quickdraw so far. The bag has been fantastic. I wish they would sell the same one separately. I've found the Platypus DuoLock bottle with a built in carabiner to have the same wide mouth opening as the bag that comes with the filter, but I haven't used it and have been using the Platypus soft bottle featured in the video. Though that bag doesn't feel as robust as the one that comes with the filter, it's nice knowing I can use it as a backup if needed. Enjoy the filter!

    Awesome detailed video thanks got asking the time to make it. Could I ask if you have ever had any issues with the befree bags breaking or are the really strong?. Cheers mike

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks Mike! They are surprisingly strong. I haven't had any issues with the bags break and have accidentally dropped them on rocks on occasion. The only thing I've experienced over time has been a slight discoloration to the bottle on an older version of the filter when it first came out (0.6 liter bottle) but it didn't cause any issues or hinder the performance. The Quickdraw has been becoming a favorite of mine, but the Katadyn BeFree is still one of my go-to's after many years of success with using one.

    I've been using a cheap Chinese Sawyer clone for the last 2 years. It works OK(at least it looks as if it does! and I haven't got sick...) but it is slow - around 2-3minutes per litre(using a CNOC 2L bag as source). But I just ordered a Platypus, the flow rate sold me! Great review.

    You could grab a Cnoc bag, huge opening to collect a lot of water quickly. 2nd of all you can unscrew a Sawyer squeeze and pull out the filter.

      You can remove the filter element from the Sawyer Squeeze?

    Great video. I noticed that at 19:30, the filtered water into the Playtpus looked dirty and brown. Is that normal? Doesn't look like clean water.

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks Nikhil. Yes, it won't remove tannins so some discoloration can occur from time to time depending on the water source. I haven't had any issues, but if I find I am in an area where I need to filter and purify I will drop a chlorine dioxide tab in the water after filtering it.

    Any updates in terms of long term clogging between the befree and the QuickDraw.

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  Před 2 lety +2

      I haven't experienced any issues with major clogging over the last 5 years using the BeFree. That could do with my water quality assessment on trail though and luck being on my side in most cases. If I am suspect of a source, I like to just do a back flush anyway which I'm sure helps. I've only been using the Quickdraw for almost a year now (aside from storage in winter) so it is tough for me to compare it to the BeFree in terms of length of use. I do find the versatility, attention to detail and flow rate to be a step up from the BeFree though. I haven't experienced any major clogging with the Quickdraw yet either.

    Hey Matt, I'm curious now that you have had a more longterm experience with both the Quickdraw and befree. If you could only choose one, which would you go with?

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  Před rokem +2

      Michael, both a great filtration options but I feel the Quickdraw has a slight edge over the BeFree. It offers more versatility and a better flow rate. I appreciate its well thought out design and it's become a favorite of mine.

    • @michael133
      @michael133 Před rokem

      @@matjobin wow very interesting. I would of thought the befree with the quick filter time and lighter weight. Thank you for sharing, I may have to give the Quickdraw a try

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  Před rokem +2

      @@michael133 The BeFree has a slightly lighter weight, but the Quickdraw has a faster flow at 3L/min vs 2L/min with the BeFree. Though those times can changed based on conditions, I've still found I prefer the Quickdraw a little more. Happy to help. Enjoy!
