In this video we take a look at two of my favorite brands when it comes to backpacking filters. Since there are alot of videos out there already, this takes a closer look at the water quality with testing strips, bacteria test, microscope, and a TDS tester. I also run the filters to failure and show the best way to clean each. Leave a comment if you have any questions... next video will take a look at the LifeStraw and MSR TrailShot filters.

We really love the ease of use of Katadin Be free along the trail.
It is defiantly my go to for that exact reason! Thanks for watching!
I carried a Sawyer in the small and medium version for over 500 miles. I saw many people using the Katadyn Hiker Pro. Yea it weights another 8 ounces but I can pump filtered water into my backpack bladder bag and fill a Smart Bottle in less than 5 minutes from any water souce. The Sawyer needs much more water and it usually took me 20-25 minutes to open my pack and fill my water up. Time is miles is daylight is hiking.
True!
Excellent review. Thank you.
Thank you!
Thanks for going through all the trouble to conduct these tests! I plan to do the same: use my BeFree and have my Sawyer on me as my back-up. Cheers!
Absolutely, it was a great reason to get there for a weekend and answered some questions I had myself. Thatâs a solid choice and exactly what I decided to go with, between the two the chances of failure with water supply is minimal. Thanks for watching!
@@TheOutdoorWorkshop BTW, liked and subscribed. đ
Are the filters new while you made this test?
Yep, each were new out of the box. I regularly have used both the large sawyer and BeFree. From heavy useage on extended week long trips, they both have held up and still have decent flowâŠ. Not quite as smooth as new but I probably wouldnât have needed to purchase these new again for some time, if it werenât for trying to have an even baseline for the test. Hope that answers your question!
3:44 you say the Sawyer Mini is three times slower. Mathematically how do you calculate anything as three times slower? Take any number then times it by another number it will not be less, always more. It should be stated as the Mini takes three times longer, or the like. Then with the time it takes the Befree, we can easily calculate how long the Sawyer Mini could take. Yes, it makes a difference, never use the "X times less" statement, it never makes mathematical sense.
Turn off the background music. It is beyond me why CZcams content creators think playing background music over their voice is somehow enhancing their videos, it is not, it is distracting. We came to hear you, not to fight background music which quickly becomes extremely annoying and intrusive. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while concentrating on your voice they must also concentrate on tuning out the music; frustrating. Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.
Thanks for the feedback!
@@TheOutdoorWorkshop The Katadyn Befree was on my list. With the Sawyer I can connect the Katadyn activated charcoal filter (ACF) thus removing off-putting aroma, clearing the water color, remove chemicals, and the like, which greatly improving the water taste. At present I cannot see how one can attach the Katadyn ACF to their Befree. If there is a way to do it I would again entertain the thought of owning the Befree. Cordially...
Slower because it is smaller, and it requires more water than dropping a hose from the Katadyn Hiker Pro.
