  • Is the New Platypus Quickdraw Water Filter Uncloggable? For this Review I ran some extremely dirty water through the Platypus Quickdraw backpacking water filter to see if I could produce a clog and found some pretty surprising results. Not only that but the Quikcdraw has some really nice features, its ultralight, screws onto smart water bottles, Cnoc bags, sawyer bags, and anything with a 28mm thread size. It also has its own thread size compatible with Platypus reservoirs and bags (listed below.) It can be back flushed without any special tools, has a way to check its integrity after a freeze. And it doesn't cost very much at just $30 for the filter alone. All in all I really like this filter (and I'm not a big fan of squeeze filters). Check out my video to find out even more.

      Listen Glen, if your gonna get all technical then how are we going to get the mythical 10 blade razor? Its a physics certainty that the better shave is completely dependent on the number of blades the device carries. Its the same with filters....the better filter is the one with the best flow rate. I don't know how you're having a hard time with this. Science is real and flow rate is all that matters because its all about how little the impact of the "Great Outdoors" differs from your life at home. The closer to a sink tap flow rate the better the filter. So simple.

      It does seem rather weird to rate filters pretty much only by speed, cos usually the easiest way to increase flow rate is to make the gaps it flows through wider, which decreases the effectiveness of the filtering. Of course convenience is nice but I'd rather have a slower filter than diarrhea.

    Old school. On backpacking trips I use a bladder for the trail and use a CNOC bag, filter and a Nalgene water bottle at camp. I realize it’s over kill. After hiking all day I want to drink water from a container. It’s difficult to use a bladder when eating dinner. I’ll give the platypus a try. Great video.

    Great review. I just wanted to add that long term clogging of filters is due to the cementation of minerals inside the filter. Minerals are sucked in and trapped and when allowed to dry they harden together. This build-up cannot be removed by backwash etc. You need to go to chemicals like vinegar or CLR. Long term wet storage of filters is the answer in distilled water and a few drops of chlorine.

      I wonder what the water was like that you were filtering. I've never had one clog - thought it did once but I just hadn't soaked it. I still have both filters going on like 5 seasons now. For the very first time I saw a noticeably slower flow after a cpl days. Just rinsed it in the water and everything was good. That said, the normally crystal clear Sierra water wasn't as clear since the floods of last month. Still haven't completely settled yet. Was your water clear or cloudy - seems weird.

    Great point on speed being 'ease of passing water through the filter'!!! Never heard it from that perspective. All the other vids I've seen just focus on speed to filter a liter of water and I'm like, 'so what?'. Unless it's 10 mins vs. 1 min it's not that big of a deal if you're talking about a handful of seconds. I also really enjoyed a more in depth breakdown of this filter, being so new and all! @@DoseofDirt Yeah, I've had my Sawyer Squeeze with me as a backup/gravity system...glad I had it. By the way, there is a 3rd party prefilter available for the BeFree (like a little cover for the filter) only works with the .6 liter bottle, but I recommend it. Also, the trouble with the BeFree seems to be when the water gets low in the bottle and there is still sediment; unlike Sawyer the water doesn't have to travel all the way through the filter, it just enters the BeFree from the side near the outlet...and that lower section then seems to be where a clog will form. If you use the prefilter you can see how much more dirt there is caught the closer you get to the outlet.

I have the sawyer mini which is slower than this or the sawyer squeeze and I never found an extra 10 or so seconds to be a big deal when I'm out hiking. All these hollow fiber filters are fast tbh. Nice review! Interesting that you're able to backflush this and do the shake method. The BeFree you only do the shake method but the fibers are more open to be able to do that. A sign that that filter is compromised is that you blow into the drinking end of the filter. If you can't force air into it, then the filter should be safe to use. If you can blow air into it, then it's compromised. Do you know the difference in the Platypus technology for their hollow fibers that allow you backflush it?

    • @MyLifeOutdoors
      @MyLifeOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      Thanks. I was unaware you could integrity check the Be Free like that. It’s interesting because I can certainly force air into the QuickDraw so there is definitely some differences. Out of curiosity I did some research and found even Katadyn is confused on back flushing the Be Free. I found a photo of an early instruction manual that allowed back flushing with a faucet. But now people say it’s been removed. One person on BPL said they spoke to a Katadyn rep and they said you could squeeze back-flush the filter but shouldn’t use a water faucet as it can damage the filter. So who knows. I’d like to get my hands on a Be Free to see for myself. Probably should bite the bullet and add it to my filter collection.

      @@MyLifeOutdoors BITE IT! I forget what kind of Hydrapak you have, but it'll integrate w/ the 42mm ones. The filter itself is only $25, so you don't neccesarily need to buy the bottle it comes with.

    I used a brand new one on a hike, and the water ran through very slowly, basically just dripping even when pressed. We drank that water for 2 days, so it had to work constantly. It was ok I thought I just bought a crappy water filter. But now I found out it’s actually supposed to pour clean water. What could be the problem here?

    What about output water quality when filtering near mud? Have you tested that?

    • @MyLifeOutdoors

      I didn’t do any measurable tests but I have drank the output water including near mud with heavy sediment and have had no ill side effects.

    you should send out a sample of the water after some of your tests to see if it is still filtering out all the bad stuff and how much bacteria and bad stuff is still flowing out .

    I hold a doctoral degree in youtube ghetto engineering and I can assure you that your test was scientific in every respect. The paperwork is en route. That does look like a nice filter. In that they're all basically the same - filters of this type - I use the Be Free and like how its performed, but I wonder when it will be that, in the hunt for the ultimate "flow rate" that a manufacturer will push the limit and stop protecting us. At some point we have to look at it like Jupiter Hikes and say "its just a cpl minutes, there are many more just like it" and stop trying to improve on a good thing.
    Peace all

    something to consider- they don't sell replacements for the dirty water bag. fucking kind of annoying. i was treating some water and then i noticed there was a pinhole leak where the bag was heatwelded together. sent an email to customer service months ago and haven't heard back. I've tried using other platypus bags for the dirty water bag but they don't work as well, especially when scooping up water.

    EDIT: Lol, according to documentation and other videos, you filter actually *FAILED* the integrity test. No continuous steam of air bubbles is supposed to come through!
    ---
    I just got the filter and tested it with tap water. Even after letting it soak over night and filtering about 8 litres of tap water, I couldn't get it fast than 45 seconds per litre (and that requires so much pressure that I'm almost in fear of popping the bag). Positive side note, though: Even after letting water sit in the water bag over night, it didn't taste anything like plastic. And the mouth piece cap is well made and has a propper hinge instead of just bending plastic until it breaks.
    So here I am. Wondering if I should keep the filter or send it back as "broken" as it isn't even close to the advertised 3 litres per minute ("only" 1.33 litres per minute). But there's not really a lot of choice, is there? Sure, the Katadyne BeFree but if the bag breaks (which it eventually will), you are left stranded in the wild with a useless filter. That alone is reason enough not to buy it for me.
    I definitely don't get the water output shown in 0:50. Interestingly the integrity test looks different for me than in 3:33... I can't push any air bubbles through. It just is a big blob of water for me. Not a single air bubble. And the instructions actually show a picture which says that there should not be any continuous stream of bubbles. So it actually looks to me, like your filter's integrity is broken!?

    I am deciding between this and the sawyer squeeze. The Quickdraw has its benefits, but has a 1000L filter capacity, and the squeeze has 100x that. So how likely are you to go through 1000L?

    • @MyLifeOutdoors
      @MyLifeOutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

      How often do you go out? You could go out every day for a year and probably just begin to touch 1000L. If you went out one weekend every month and drank one gallon each day (which I only do if it’s desert hot) the filter would last 7 years. But I don’t work for Platypus, so if you like the Sawyer, by all means, get it.

    • @hschokker86
      @hschokker86 Před 2 lety +1

      I was thinking about this too but then again many people report the micro and somewhat also the mini clog up anyway long before 100.000 liter. Because of this I think I'll go for the QuickDraw. The bags by platypus are also stronger I think.

    • @WasatchWill
      @WasatchWill Před 2 lety

      @@hschokker86 Bag that came with my QuickDraw sprung a bad leak where the hard plastic threaded section is welded onto the soft plastic bag portion. That was only after using it on one weekend trip and then on the 6th day of a week long trip. I was really shocked by that because I was not abusive with it or putting any unreasonable force on it. I filed a warranty claim with Platypus and got an auto response saying they were 3 to 4 months behind on fulfilling warranty service. Fortunately, the filter does have the dual thread setup allowing it to also mate with the standard thread bottles and bags out there. The filter itself has indeed been great so far.

    I was really looking forward to getting my new quick draw but I'd have to say I'm a little disappointed with the flow rate😕. Between the Sawyer squeeze, the katadyn befree, and the Quick Draw the katadyn befree wins hands down as far as flow rate is concerned. I don't like spending a whole lot of time filtering my water.

    " Is This Filter Uncloggable? " To answer your question. Water filters are like anything else in this life. The two guarantees for our life time are Taxes and Death. The guarantee in a water filters life expectancy is eventually clogging at some point. When is the million dollar question. HINT ..... Usually at the most inconvenient time.
