thank god. I thought I bought a bad violin
Me too
Same here
Same hereeeee
Me too
Omg same
When I was eleven years old I took violin lessons from a nun. She would stop slipping pegs by rubbing some chalk dust on them.
does it actually work?
Chalk usually does work.
Well at least I’m have a backup plan
I‘ve used chalk and soap.
use rosin on your pegs
My right ear is pleased.
Elverond omg thank you for this comment. I was only listening with one earbud and thought she was just really sticking with the silent film theme... lol
@@stephanies.9620 me too i was wondering why no-one was saying anything lol
Mine is not! I’m kind of deaf on that particular ear. Took me a while to figure out that I needed to turn my headphones over.
There are several times I broke my strings by slipping pegs
Same thing. I broke two E Dominants in a row.
🤣🤣🤣... (😮)...😭😭😭
Just did
@@C.Church crapp
Same my A string broke.
My A string too
I can't believe that literally pushing the pegs in fixed the issue after buying this cheap violin 2 years ago... it makes sense physically but I hadn't ever thought of it on my own 😂
Wow I thought something was really wrong with my violin and you helped me resolve it in ten seconds!! Thankyou 🙌🏼🎻
Hey Alison, thank you so much. This always happens during the harmattan season here in Nigeria and I thought there was no solution than to wait till its the rainy season. Here I am being enlightened. You're the best.
Hi there, I subscribed to your channel a few months back as I picked up a Cecilio violin and wanted to start learning. Very recently this was the first time I encountered this problem with my A string peg, luckily your first step (to nudge the peg inward while tuning) was all I needed to do to make it stop slipping, I am so grateful as at first I was beginning to think I would have to take it in for repairing, but luckily that wasn't the case! Your channel has been tremendously helpful for learning violin - Thank you so much!!!
***** welcome
DO NOT buy a Cecelio violin! Factory made & very poor quality, sound terrible. Often the pegs & the bridge are not hand carved or adjusted at all.
YOU HAVE A VIDEO FOR EVERYTHING OMG
No time to explain but you just saved my life, thank you
instead of soap, you can also put chalk, the same one used for writing on tables or drawing on the walls. It also works great with writing pencils as long as they are not too greasy (most of the regular pencils are HB which are fine, but it works well with H, H2, but avoid B2 and higher).
And of course, the all mighty baby talc.
OMG....you have no idea how much this helped after about 2 plus hours of frustration. The first method worked for me immediately.
I have been fiddling around with my peg for the past hour trying to tune then I remembered you THANK YOU SO MUCH
I cried cause i thought i broke my violin
My peg keeps on slipping for the past 4 hours
I watched 8 videos now
And my fingers are scratched im bleeding
Nothing is working
If nothing is working, then you most likely have a too cheap violin and need to upgrade to something better.
Meow Lol try chalk
Try chalk power if all nothing else is working or maybe because this comment was 4 months ago you probably got a new one
5 wonderful solutions in one video that are way better than every other single solutions in a bunch of other videos I saw. 🖤
Yeah, thanks for mentioning this in your 'How to Set Up a New Violin' video. This totally common thing that happens with new violins. Waited for you to acknowledge it in the video. Totally didn't snap my E string. Thanks.
You didn't talk about replacing the pegs with geared pegs - like the Wittner fine tune pegs. Yes they are expensive ($30 or so per peg). They look like a regular peg but they have a gear mechanism inside so the whole peg isn't turning only the part that the string goes through. They make them for 3/4 and full size violins, violas. cellos and double bases - as well as ukuleles and guitars that use a peg head. As well as not slipping they are much easier to tune precisely because the gear allows finer control.
My a string sounds like the g string right now😂😂😂😂
AlwaysHere ArmyInternational MINE SOUNDS LIKE 2 ON THE C 😂
HELP
That moment when your A string becomes an F# string
My use to sound like a cello 😂😅
Sameeee
My d sounds like the g because while I was tuning I plucked it too hard so it loosened
THANK YOU! Number one solved my problem
TeFaZ same!
Here in New York City trying to fix the peg problem. Thank you for the video, love the intro. I give this video a thumbs up👍🎼🎶🎵🎻
OMG!!!!!!!! It was happening to my brand new violin and i was getting so mad i was about to a. Break my violin b. Curse at it like crazy and c. (maybe) complain to the seller and try to get my money back and probably go to their house and make a record of me complaining and hide it so they'll have restless nights. Thank you so much for helping this unexpirienced situation!( p.s. i probably wouldn't do those things that i listed because i was just mad at my violin)
I like this channel because I can sneakily remind myself of the stuff I did about 40 years ago
I always do #1
Me too, that's how I got my to stop slipping
I do #1 The peg stops moving. But after 5 minutes it slips again :(
Blimey. You've certainly upped your production values for your video. Excellent work.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I just got my violin, thought it was defective. This fixed it!
Thanks so much I thought my violin broke since it wasn’t tuning but thanks to you it’s fixed
THANK YOU I LEGIT BROKE MY STRING ONCE BECAUSE HE PEG KEPT SLIPPING AND I KEPT TURNING IT HIGHER THANK YOU FOR THIS NOW I CAN TUNEEE 😭
I just bought a violin and started tuning it and was confronted with slipping pegs problem. So I stumbled across this video. The advice that did work for me is wind the strings closer to the side of the violin. My only question is, why don't they initially make the hole through which the strings goes closer to the side? That would fix this permanently. I think I'm gonna drill new holes in my pegs and give it a try.
They do! I just suspect you have a very cheap student violin if your pegs are slipping - hence finding this video.
THANK.YOU YOU JUST SAVED MY VIOLIN!
I love this video not only for the lesson but the Silent Film look. Especially in the beginning. Great Imagination. It gives it a humous tune to the whole lesson. Ha. Ha. Tune Get it. OK I'm slipping and loosing you now. Better watch the video instead.
My pegs are so tight that I hardly can move them, and still they keep slipping. I was playing a moment ago and while playing they slipped and made it sound terrible..
The intro cracked me up hee hee I had this problem with a new student violin I've gotten literally a few days ago as of this comment, and it made me so sad. I came across a couple of videos for fixing it, and this one was the one the finally got it to gel for me. I wonder if it'll eventually start slipping again, though, which is why I am bringing it in for a lookover. I imagine the pegs will all be adjusted properly, and I know the bridge needs some adjustment. Your vidoes are the ones I've been watching to learn. It's going to be a rainy day indoors today, so, the perfect change to finally get some real practice and familarity with the instrument in!
Thanks a lot for this video! I have a concert just two days away and then this started happening... Thanks again!
Thank you for this! So helpful, and omg the first 30 seconds killed me with laughter! TALLY HO AND OFF WE GO
Thank you so much, you don't believe how much this helped. (u saved me from getting an F in my orchestra class)
Great ideas. And I love the old-time video trick!
Did the first method, instantly fixed the problem thank you very much
Thank you . Your first solution made my day
I get them out and apply rosin on them😊 works every time
Magdy Soss thank you so much tried everything
This happen to me today and I went to the store and came home and watch this video I was like oh... Dang it!
My right hear is very thankfull...
OMG Alison you are a life saver you always have a solution to all my problem
Very helpful tips, thank you.
03:57 OMG so beautiful whispery voice
THIS is what i was looking for. THANK YOU (I have not watched the video yet, so i hope it's gonna help!)
1st solution causes some long term damage as the size of the hole increases
I don’t agree, but we are talking about solutions for violins under $100. No good quality student violin will have this issue - hence those people will not be looking for this video.
There are thousands of people who have very cheap violins that can’t get them in tune and this video is for them.
I snapped my E string again... The 2nd time this month after trying to stop slipping. I live in a VERY hot country, no music stores...;(
If you are snapping your string, you are most likely yanking the string too much, too quickly. You will not snap the string if you really take your time and tighten it little by little.
- Thread the new string into the hole in the peg, tighten the string till its 'taught' all the way up, making sure the bottom of the string is in the tail piece/fine tuner correctly and in the groove of the bridge with the little plastic tubing protecting the string over the bridge.
- Then, tighten the string little by little by little. NEVER yank the string all the way to the note you want to tune it too as you will snap it.
Just to replace one string takes me a good 10-15 mins and for a whole set about 30 minutes or more.
Thank you, and I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but, my peg keeps slipping. I tried everything but the peg glue thing. I can't buy it in my country
Cindy Wu you should also always loosen your peg a bit before tightening it, so turn it a little towards yourself before turning it outwards. I experimented this problem Al lot myself since I live in India, which is a very very humid place
I snapped my G string
Rebekah .Warrington. I snapped my G string twice struggling with slipping pegs. If only I knew all I had to do was push the peg... Now I have to go to the store.
Thank you for this! Literally, thank you! Haven't broke a string yet but I'm going there XD have experience with the guitar so kinda sensed. Bought a new set though, imma re-string my 2 day old violin lol
Thank you so much, these tips really helped
i recently got a violin bought on amazon (kinglos ) and the pegs are VERY unstable ... even with 1st technique they always slip ! I wanted to play as soon as i got it but couldn't do anything since then and i'm starting to regret to have purchased this :(
....i think you have answered tour own wuestion. It never pays to go really cheap as you end up with utter rubbish. Return it if you can and get something decent but still not too expensive like a Stentor II.
OMG thank you so much! Number 1 fixed my violin!
I tried the soap bar it didn't work for me and right now i didn't have the money to buy the drops but i found that twist ties work pretty well too :) all you gotta do i s pull the peg out a bit to slip it in. Its not the prettiest solution but helps for practice at least until i can buy the drops ^^
Darkdokuhime If the soap doesnt work, then its a peg drop time, but I dont know of any other solutions if you cant get the drops - sorry.
Thank you very much you just solved my problem on the 1st solution.
Great one...
Thank you very much.
Thank you, this helped me so much!
The pushing down actually worked. One of them was really lose and was kinda refusing to be pushed down but I got it to stop.
Oh gods yes! This is my biggest issue and makes me scared if tuning my violin.
thank you for this . I was thinking I would have to get a new set of pegs or start buying luthier tools and start repairing more than practicing .
Thank you so much!!!😄
Thanks number 1 worked! At first my E string suddenly got two octaves lower
Does this work on cellos as well?
Thank you very helpful
THANK YOU!!!
hello there, I recently bought a 16" viola but as i start to rotate the pegs for tuning the D string,i can rotate the pegs until C note is reached and after that i cannot rotate the peg anymore and if i try little harder the string breaks ,and if i don't try harder and leave it at C note then pegs slips to G note tuning of the string, please help i have already broken 2 D and G strings.....sorry for bad English..............
Bishal Ghimirey If none of the 5 solutions in the video are working, then you might need to take it to a shop/violin luthier.
another great video!
Hello, this is a really useful video, so thank you!!
I have recently inherited a very old violin (from the 19th century), and a few days ago tried to tune it for the first time. I'm pretty sure the pegs are loose and that is the only problem (I usually do #1 with my other violin, but the pegs are really too loose for this one), but i was wondering which solution would be best so I can start playing it as soon as possible, as it has such a beautiful rich tone! I would also like to avoid taking it to a repair shop for the time being.
If you have any suggestions, I would love to know. Thank you x
If its an old violin I would advise you not to play about with the pegs, but get them professionally looked at. `they probably need tweaking. `the trouble with old violins that have potentially been 'sitting there' for a while is that all sorts of things can happen to the peg box. The pegs are mostly like ebony, and they need adjusting.
If it were a cheap old student violin, its fine to mess about with them, but not on an antique. Get it fixed and sorted, and it will be lovely. Whilst the luthier has it, they will look it over and adjust the sound post too if necessary and trust me, it will come back lovely.
Okay, thank you very much! Yeah, I haven't done anything to them yet, as I was worried too seeing how old it is. I will get it checked soon, and hopefully be able to play it for future concerts. Thank you again for your advice! x
The sixth solution is get mechanical tuners. They may not look as nice, but they make tuning easier regardless of environmental issues. You don't even need fine tuners.
Very expensive, and they need to be fitted. They wont fint otherwise and you cant sadly just buy pegs and hope they fit properly into the holes as they wont. If they dont go in enough for example as the pre-drilled hole is too small, then they wont work well.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Maybe, but they work well and that slipping and tuning issue is gone.
I love u I finally got my violin to work😭💗
Thank you so much. You saved me.
My 8 year old daughter and I got a nice Cecilio for Christmas,
we both want to learn.
I noticed our pegs do not stick out on the opposite side, should they?
Thank you for covering details such as this,
as a beginner I would not know these valuable tips.
I look forward to soaking in your videos and learning the violin.
I love your approach.
Each violin is slightly different from the next. As long as you can tune the violin, it doesn’t matter whether the pegs stick out.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Wonderful!!!
Thank you for the speedy response.
Your channel is stupendous, you teach very well.
Thank you 😎👍🎶
Thank you SO SO SO SO much !!!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
OMG IT WORKED!!!!!!!! YA EARNED A LIKE AND SUB
Thanks for your support.
thank you so very much!
Method 2 works
New student. Popping strings regularly. My pegs have never gone all the way through the hole. Is that normal?
Very interesting video.. can you make a new video showing 'how place the string back onto a removed peg'
RelaxedAndLovingIt If you do a quick search on my channel I have 2 videos on how to replace strings already.
My a string fine tuner keeps unwinding when I use it
You could try and push the end of the string through the hole in the peg a little further - so it’s a good 1cm though the little peg hole. Too short, and it will unwind - especially in cheaper strings as the winding is poor.
praise the lord! thank you!
omg thank you so much, helped me soooo much.
Used the first tip, goodbye slipping pegs!
Hey I just bought a new violin on eBay and the pegs seem to be too big which is why I think mine are slipping. Is there a quick and easy way to make them fit better?
mine broke, did i do it right?
Thank you so much!! I was trying to tune my violin and the pegs kept slipping.
Please I would like to ask a favour. Could you please do a tutorial on the Violin duet piece "the prayer" preferably by the Collingsworth family.. Thanks. :)
Yay I'm #200 to like. Very helpful. Thanks.
THANK YOU
Why not use a clear nail polish? It could tighten the peg holes. Anybody have an idea why people don't use it?
I have a question... I play a woodwind instrument too and it has cork grease to lubricate the different parts of the instrument if it gets stuck. Could I use the cork grease on my violin pegs too??🤔
NO! What you can try is in the video.
tnx it really worked it waz off tuned always
I tried retightening my slipping G string and I think it became unwound because it didn’t snap but something is definitely off
thank you
Damn American climate... This cold has been MURDER on my pegs! 😖 I just re-did every string TWICE and the pegs were STILL slipping! (I've had the violin for almost a year and never needed to tune before, nor undo the strings) I came very close to smashing the violin against the wall! Haha! But pushing them in as I tuned did help, and they seem to be stable now. Let's hope they stay that way. Also, I never realized how horrendously difficult and tedious it is to tune! A hairs width down and it's much too low, a hairs width up and it's much too high, and I'm being as slight as I possibly can! Would it help to mark the pegs and the box once I've got it right? Or will the "right" placement change next time?
Thank you so much it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a problem. My violin used to be my Papa's and it is about 55 years old. Whenever we tuned it with the pegs we would push the peg in a little. Now the peg holes in the scroll box are really big. Thank you for what you said in this video but it doesn't seem to be working, the first solution got me to where I am, I have the strings wound properly in the box, the thing I haven't tried is 'Peg Drops' I'm nervous that I'll add to much, I also tried the last suggestion with a bar of soap. Do you have any other ideas that I may try?
Sounds like you need to take it to a violin luthier. to be fixed.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Thank you
You are awesome it worked thanx!!!!!!!😄😄😄😄😄
Thank You soooooo much omg !!!
Had a peg slip once, I just rubbed "cigarette" ashes on the culprit. Worked a treat.
lol
I am such a sissy when it comes to e-string. Last time I tuned it when I was 11, the e-string broke and it cut my whole forearm, and there was this thin long scar. That definitely did hurt but I never told it to my mum ever since
