      i wouldn't recommend you tuning it to a A# especially with student quality instruments unless you want to do that with the fine tuners and tune up to the A first then go up with the fine tuners cause its very easy to break a string and you don't want That especially if your paying for the strings

    Thank you for this video, I am just about to receive my first violin. I didn't even know about the sound post, you've probably saved me a lot of heartache there.
    Also, thank you for stressing the fragility of the strings (especially since Violin strings are so expensive). I have been restringing and tuning my own guitars for over 20 years, classical/folk/electric and bass. I have never broken a guitar string while stringing or tuning, but it seems to be a much more delicate process with the violin.

    I've seen a mariachi put a comb on the playing side of bridge whilst practicing quietly. It made violin sound great in a soft manner, although it became a habit of mine too. My guitar player reprimanded me as he could not hear fiddle. A big difference came when I opened up the sound and my inhibitions resulting in a beautiful tone. I like it better than the mute. Great video!

      I think it's safe to start tuning a semi-tone sharp when you are changing strings, because its only for a very short time, as soon as you tune other stings the 1.st stings go flat. I didn't use this proceedure yet, but when I changed strings I had to go through 4 or 5 iterations, so next time I will try your proceedure.
      Changing strings is painfull, you have to tune, tune and tune again for the first 2 - 3 days. The 1st day you can only play for a couple of minutes before you have to tune again.

    I took all my strings off before I learned about the sound post. I was blessed to not have the sound post fall. Now I string one at a time or get a professional to change them. I had a string break on me once when I was very young (guitar string) and it scared me so badly that I am afraid to tune or change the strings but I do it because I love to play I am just very cautious and I live through it.

    • @JaydedCammie
      @JaydedCammie Před 4 lety

      I feel you. I had an E string snap at my face in middle school and that had me so scared I never fully learned to change/tune my strings. It's a big part of why I quit playing in high school. When I restarted as an adult I used safety goggles until I desensitized myself to the fear. I can totally tune and change out my strings now. I just v switched to a Dominant set with a Pirastro gold a last week and it sounds lovely. I can feel the v resonance in my violin when I change left hand position, and it makes me so happy. Videos like this and new music related tech have made relearning as an adult so much easier in general.
      I generally under tune about one step if I'm changing out all my strings, before tuning them up. Then I expect to tune them each session until they settle.

      R Jz the tube needs to go over the bridge to prevent the string from cutting in since its thin. Dont take the tube off, when you put the string on, just make sure its over the bridge to protect the string.

    Love your videos, they are wonderful! But I don't understand how removing all the strings could make the sound post fall. Isn't that the way you typically receive a violin, with the strings very loose, and the bridge not yet installed? Isn't that also a situation where there's no pressure on the top of the violin? What keeps the sound post from falling over during shipping? TIA for your reply!

    I am learning so much from your videos. Over the last 50 years, as life has allowed, I have periodically pulled my framus strad copy viola out and played a bit. I've played on the same now 60 year old Red Label Super Sensitive Strings all these years without even considering changing them. I realized that the bow might be a quality issue since it has the original hair and not very much of that is left. In spite of both of those two issues I can still get a fairly pleasant sound from this instrument. I wonder which strings you might recommend I try first? And I wonder if you would expect that an old bow (the one that originally came with that framus viola) is worth the cost of rehairing or if I should just replace the bow? I realize you can't say for certain without inspecting it, but just wonder what you would expect the case to be.

    Thanks for the heads up on the sound post. My violin came without the bridge in and all the strings verrrry loose, so I’m assuming you would need to be very careful when first setting it up. Also, my sound post isn’t in the centre, it’s far off to the right side. Is that normal? It’s very close to the right “f” hole.

    I've recently changed my strings to a set of Thomastik Dominant strings but ran into a problem. All of the new strings sound perfect except the G string which sounds really 'hollow' and doesn't 'ring' properly when stopped. The open G string is fine but definitely is not right besides. I think the sound post may have moved during changing but any ideas on what the problem might be would be appreciated!

      naylor91 1 Without hearing it or seeing it, i dont think there is a lot i can do from my end. It could be your violin, it could be something at the tail piece. Its likely to be something on your violin than the string itself, although it may be the string, but unlikely.

  • @Aditya.Chander
    @Aditya.Chander Před 10 lety +9

    Alison, tuning your strings up a semitone at first is a very bad idea. Modern-made strings are designed to stretch more quickly than their older counterparts, but the excess tension will put too much strain on the core of the string and reduce its life. For higher tension strings (such as steel core strings, or a synthetic core such as Evah Pirazzi or Vision Titanium Solos) you risk snapping the strings. This is especially a problem for the plain steel E string. The strings aren't designed to withstand the higher tension - you should NEVER tune up. Retuning is something you will just have to deal with. Strings will settle within 2 days to a week, so it is not necessary to counter this by tuning up a semitone.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 10 lety +2

      Aditya Chander This is my personal way of tuning new strings and i have been doing this for many many years successfully. Its not harmful and helps the strings to stretch into place anyway.
      There is no evidence to suggest either way that this is a bad idea. In fact, many composers have written pieces that have the violinist re-tune their strings up as much as a 5th for example without consequence.

    • @Aditya.Chander
      @Aditya.Chander Před 10 lety +2

      The Online Piano and Violin Tutor If it works for you that's fine - I've tried to artificially stretch strings this way just before playing in a concert in the past, and I've had strings burst mid-concert as a result of it. Often people who play scordatura music will put extremely low tension strings on instead, or put say a high tension D string on where the G string was before and lower the tension to the required pitch. Any luthier will tell you that tuning your strings up is a bad idea. It can cause the top of the violin to cave in. Particularly for students using steel strings e.g. D'Addario Prelude or Helicore this is a bad idea.

I think my G string is too lose or somewhat but when I keep tighten it to reach the G note, the tighten button keeps returning back, it doesn't stay in place so my G string sound very weird... I dont know its the violin problem or the string problem? anychance that the tunning button is too lose to keep the string in place??? I also notice the string cause big deep line in the bridge.. Please tell me what is wrong with my violin and which part I need to replace?
    By the way, I really enjoy your lession, as a self-learner at home, I learned Twinkle twinkle for the first 30 mins and then silent night for the next 2 hours. :D anyway, I have no knowledge of music or reading notes, but I will take it seriously since this passion suddenly rises. Thanks to your videos.

      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 4 lety

      The colours at the top of the strings help indicate which goes on which string. If you look at the packet, the string will be on there. Dont take them all out and muddle them up. They are crossing at the top as you just need to wind them a little neater.

    Hello,
    I haven't changed my strings in a long time. I also haven't played very much in the last few years. How can you tell when it's time to change your strings?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 9 lety

      Heather Mccorkle As a beginner it will be hard to tell, but if you replace them, you WILL notice a difference as they will sound more alive and generally brighter etc. If they have not been replaced in over a year, probably time to change them. You dont save money by not doing this as your playing and the sound of the violin will just sound flat.

    I should've watched this video before I changed my strings. I ended up doing it backwards, sticking the string in the peg first and then hooking it onto the fine tuner. I still had trouble keeping it in tune. Does it make a difference to put the string on the opposite way you showed in the video?

      Not really, but it’s the traditional way to do it so that’s that way we do it. As long as whatever string you remove first, you replace - don’t remove them all then replace them! Remove, replace. Remove, replace.

Regarding that lovely sound post "the soul of a cheap volin" it's really not the end of the world should it fall down really as it can happen one day like if the bridge went seeking better pastures ever have a bridge seek better pastures? yeah but this is why one should learn how to adjust it. I am trying to replace my G, D, and A string and I took each one out individually and replaced it, but when I got to the G string my bridge popped out and scared me to death. Sound post didn't move and looks fine as far as I can tell, but I still can't hardly get the bridge to stay in place. It popped out 3 times and now I'm afraid to tune it. I make sure it's straight each time but it keeps leaning! I'm thinking of putting the old strings back on, and only leaving 1 new string until it stretches out...and then replacing the others one at a time spacing them out in the same way....would that help?? Any advice??

      @@TheOnlineViolinTutor I have read that violin strings should be replaced at least once a year or if they are worn out or dead. So what I'm asking in my question above is do Violin strings have a shelf life once they are installed even if they haven't been played on. The strings on the violin I just bought are almost two years old but have probably been played very little, do they need to be changed once I take possession of my violin. For example I ride a street motorcycle and regardless of the tread that is left on the tires, the tires have a 4 year life from the date of manufacture because as time goes on the rubber becomes harder and harder and you start to lose grip and that becomes dangerous. Thanks for replying Allison.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 4 lety +1

      If you are referring to strings like Evahs, then yes I believe that once they have access to the air on a violin, then start to degrade and oxidise.
      I wouldnt personally put a stale set of strings unused or not on my violin as they still wont sound as nice.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 7 lety

      You should change them every 9 months I guess depending on the strings used, and how much you play etc.
      When was the last time you changed them and how long were the previous lot on for?
      I recently changed mine as they were LONG overdue as they had been on too long for me to admit lol, and its an unbelievable difference in sound! Its like playing in colour where before, when my strings were dead, thyey were flat, but its hard to tell unless you compare with new ones. I would say if you have had them on a year, they will have gone 'dead' (dull, flat, lifeless etc) a LONG time ago.
      As for your bow - I dont know what bow you have - is it expensive? What hair is on it etc etc. If its a good bow, then re-hair 12-18 months I guess. Having said that, if its a good quality bow and therefore something like blue mongolian hair and its looked after, then maybe less frequent.

      My bow i had that i never changed same with my strings was $80 made from brazilwood.. I think it seems fine because it didn't loose any hair only a few i remember.. not sure why it needs to be re haired?
      Thanks!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 7 lety

      You will know the strings need changing because they will just sound dead and lifeless and will be 'hard work' to bow on. if you have gone past a year, then its definitely time to change regardless.
      I wouldnt waste your money re-hairing the bow as it will probably cost more than $80 to do it!

      Tammie Loh Im not sure - really hard to say. Could be, 1. poor quality violin/pegs. 2. poor quality string or 3. incorrectly re-stringing it - which more likely. Strings only break when people are rough with them. Other than that, they dont just break on their own. Perhaps 4. you tuned it too roughly also causing it to break.
