    Thank you... I am mainly a woodwind player. But I also play some guitar and now practicing the violin more confidently with your videos! :) I had asked in previous years, if it was possible for the strings to go dead on the guitar, and I was told no. But you have made it perfectly clear, that they can! I think it was probably because the person I was asking, didn't want to have to buy new strings, instead of just saying, yes. But we'll wait to get new strings.

      People who have lack of trust are easily intimidated by issues like this. Other people don't feel that drama so much. You have to know that you have to learn to trust a little more to make life easier. Most kids get that with mother's milk so to speak. But you have a pro as tutor here, who is providing you with all necessary information. And if you do as she said your violin will be okay. You can trust that.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 7 lety +1

      Im possible for me to say as I cant hear your violin. You best bet is to read up on strings and see what sound they are supposed to produce and choose from there. Its all a game of trial and error as ultimately it depends on your violin and the way you play.
      Also if you have a cheap student violin, expensive Pirastro strings are going to be a waste of time and money as you wont get the most out of them.
      I have a video on strings already on my channel: czcams.com/video/9FoecIDrNV0/video.html

      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 6 lety

      I have and I find them too tinny. My violin is a very old antique with a very soft and delicate sound, so i have to be careful what I use. I find the best strings are gut, but....those are a bloody nightmare to tune, even though they sound beautiful on my violin.

    • @MrStrauss888
      @MrStrauss888 Před 6 lety

      Yes that's the gut always makes trouble, but Olive is the best gut I've ever tried although it is bloody expensive and very hard to tune. It still fit on my Maggini Copy. But still I can't forget my first love "Dominant" so I use it with Special E gold to my other old violin with a little bit soundpost adjustment then it perfectly match me. Seems that Evah Gold or Obligato is a big sound.

    Yes, I didn't even take off my strings while unvarnishing my violin. The sound post is just clamped in between top and bottom--too dangerous.
    I'm using Obligato and will put on Obligato again soon. You praised them a lot which was reason enough and now I really like it. Interestingly fiddlerman.com changed from Obligato to Vision, so they're obviously good too. But I'm not in the mood for more experiments--not before my first concert in December.

  • @ambarrivera6049

    When I tried to change the string it was fine at first, I got the string in the holes and everything. When I tried to tune it, however, the string would reach a certain tension where either the peg would slip or the string would pop out of the hole and loosen, therefore I had to start over. What do I do to prevent this?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 7 lety

      Pull a little more through the peg. I find Daddario string slip like this all the time as well as others. Pull enough so you have a good 1cm or 1.5cm through the little hole, but not too much that its really sticking out the peg box.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 7 lety +2

      Every 6 months or so. Depending on how much I use my violin. To be honest, I change them when I can hear they are dead/flat and im having to work really hard to get a good sound. I dont change for the sake of it of after 3 months etc because thats a waste of money and if I have not played my violin for 3 months, then they wont be dead.

    I have a question it might be a dumb one but I thought I'd ask anyway. I want to learn the violin I still haven't got one yet but I am left handed and was wondering if the structure of a left handed violin is different from a right handed violin. I thought maybe I should just try to get used to using a right handed violin but I don't know yet.

I do not want to get a very expensive violin but I want to get a decent one that I can really play with if I get better. I was looking at the MV500 but then saw that you put it as a starter violin. • @ryanschlimme

    I heard the passione g had some problems with the g and the winding in the peg box extending to the nut. Also, the Oliv a I've heard bad things about. How are your experiences?
    Right now I use G and D oliv stiff, Eudoxa a, and goldbrokat e. How do you think that set is balance wise?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 7 lety +1

      I have no idea as that combo will be totally different on my violin and it will on yours. Its about knowing your violin, the strings and what you want to suppress or bring out of the violin.

    • @ryanschlimme
      @ryanschlimme Před 7 lety

      Have you had problems with the winding of your Passione strings in the pegbox? It looks as if the winding extends to the nut which probably wouldn't result in a good tone. What's your stance on this?

    • @threesidedtriangle1798
      @threesidedtriangle1798 Před 5 lety

      Some people have no problems with the Oliv A, some can tolerate it, and some just use a different A. Some people say it unwinds easily, others say it's fine, but the main problem is as it adjusts to your finger temperature and room temperature, it will go out of tune often. You have to let it warm to your hand and stuff.
      The Passione, I think mainly the G, has a winding that extends over the nut so that as the string settles, it will go back to a normal spot not over the nut, for extra tuning stability. It should be fine after it breaks in.
      The Oliv Stiff D is really high tension. The lightest gauge stiff is higher than the regular Oliv D, which even its lightest gauge is about the same as Evah Pirazzi, which is pretty high. The stiff Oliv G is low tension, even in its highest gauge, and so is the Eudoxa A. That might cause a tension inbalance. The Goldbrokat E is a nice string, it should be okay.
      You can use the Pirastro website to find the tensions, and a few Pirastro strings have the tension in lbs on violinstringreview.com too.
      Keep in mind that since Passione is a hybrid string, it will sound like one - somewhere between gut and synthetic. It's the most stable gut regarding tuning, though. Oliv D silver and G stiff should be pretty stable once broken in.
      A few alternatives for the Oliv A are Passione/Passione Solo, Obligato, Larsen Original/Tzigane, Pirastro Synoxa/Tonica, Gold Label (tuning?) Kaplan Amo, and more. Try to find a rich string to match the lower gut, or use a steel A like famous soloists from before synthetic strings, such as Warchal Russian Style A, Warchal Avantgarde, Pirastro Eudoxa-Chromcor, Thomastik Spirocore, D'addario Helicore, or pretty much any steel A.

    I want to buy Pirastro Oliv strings, and apparently there's a choice between ball end or loop end for the E-string. Does anyone know what type of end the other Pirastro Oliv strings (G, D and A) have? Do they have ball or loop ends?

    • @threesidedtriangle1798
      @threesidedtriangle1798 Před 5 lety +1

      The E string depends on what fine tuner you use. If it's a Hill style so that it's the same length as the other strings, then it's probably a loop. If it's a regular ball end Wittner that protrudes out closer to the bridge, then it's probably ball end. You can look up images.
      To answer your other question, the Oliv A is ball, and D & G is tie knot, kind of like ball.

  • @mcgufbd
    @mcgufbd Před 7 lety

    Does it matter how they are wound around the pegs? I heard somewhere that you should never cross the string over itself when winding, but that's REALLY hard. I couldn't get it, so mine cross.
    Speaking of strings, do you think the Fiddlerman strings are good as Dominants as he claims? they were way better than the ones that came on my $150 Cecilio electric, but I didn't know if it would be worth getting the Dominants next time.

    • @threesidedtriangle1798
      @threesidedtriangle1798 Před 5 lety +1

      Late, but the Fiddlerman strings are pretty good. I'm pretty sure they're lower tension than Dominants. I don't remember much, but they're pretty similar. Every violin is different, and they respond differently to different strings and tensions, so I can't say one is objectively better, but you can go with the classic Dominant with Gold Label E on Ebay for under $40, or a similar but maybe a tiny bit brighter Pirastro Tonica for about $25 on Ebay, which is cheaper than the Fiddlerman set ($30)
