I thought the Scottish flag in my logo might have given my nationality away, lol. Also the Unicorn statue (Scotland's national animal) on my viewpoint area, hehehe.

You truly are a joy to watch. Your video quality is amazing. I was going to suggest modelers putty (mac-tac, stick tac) to help hold the lights and prevent light leakage but it doesn't look like you need it. Lights look great.

Thank you very much, I appreciate you noticing my video efforts. mac-tak is a good idea, thanks.

I'm hoping to produce 2-3 good locos out of the dozen or so chassis and shells I acquired in the first phase of my venture back into model rr-ing. These are in addition to the good'uns I bought over the same time. I've more than enough cars for them to haul. My real goal is to make interchangeable modules, so I can run different companies' locos in an appropriate setting. I've also taken the plunge on N gauge, both to have an "anything goes" mini-layout, and to run a proper narrow gauge (HOn30 or HOe) quarry line to bring riprap down to the standard gauge line.

I have a 1412 locomotive made in the 1980s, but it has a broken gear. I can't find a part anywhere, I'm hoping to find a set like yours.
    Merci pour votre vidéo
J'ai une locomotive 1412 fabriquée dans les années 1980, mais il a un engrenage de brisée. Je ne trouve pas de pièce nul part, j'espère trouver un ensemble comme le votre.

The question of questions... Can you make silk purse out of a pigs ear, or can you only create a nicer pigs ear? My experience tells me... your mileage may vary depending on your patience, skill set, and quality of your tooling.

For future ref, you can get much smaller version of those JST plugs. Handy for more cramped locos or coaching stock.

Thanks. It was hard to tell what size these were on Amazon.

Jumping from 03:26 to 31:00 you reversed the power bogie on re-assembly (not the wiring) which is why it went the wrong way.

haha, well spotted. I did figure it out eventually.

This is really good but I can't believe you use petroleum jelly as lube. You can get a lifetime supply of Super Lube for under $15CDN

Are the replacement gears 3D printed and/or available for sale? I swear EVERY Bachmann/Tyco/Life-Like pancake motor in Creation has those gears broken!

    • @ScottRails
      @ScottRails  Před 10 měsíci

The gears I was sent were from Armand's parts bin. I've seen the gears at my local hobby shop, but they are quite expensive.

Actual gear design is difficult.. A CAD file would be complex. I wondered if a good one could be scanned and 3D printed. I just can't afford the equipment, or I'd try. One could make a decent profit selling them, There are THOUSANDS of locos with split gears... .@@ScottRails

There's only three ways that you can get gears for these locomotives. The first is through donor locomotives. As for the second, a search for robotic gears my lead to a replacement gear. The third option (experimental) requires gluing the broken gear with a plastic solvent adhesive such as MEK or Plastruct Plastic Weld. I haven't tried this option yet, but the solvent could melt together (fuse) the plastic gear with a help of a clamp. Super glue is out due to the smooth surface of the plastic doesn't yield well to bonding.
My theory of the issue is that the metal shaft expands and contracts with temperature changes which leads to cracking. This is only a theory, and it may just be the simple deterioration of the plastic itself.

      Hi, Cass.
Thanks for the reply. I have struggled with a number of these gears over the years. It's why I try to stay away from this type of power train. As far as donors go, My experience has been that virtually ALL of these gears fail. If something is running, I will try and swap out the entire motor. It's a waiting game to see when (not if) the shoe eventually drops. The plastics seems to be a Nylon derivative, All the solvents I have tried, don't bond it. I have straight MEK, and will give it a try, but I don't hold out much hope. Nasty stuff-will give you Cancer, if you work with it long enough... JB Weld has a new plastic bonder epoxy, too. maybe...
It's why I was thinking, a scan and mold via 3D print. I understand that there is metal reinforced resin, now. I think scanning would be the best route, as a 3D model built around a true gear design, would be a monumental task. Gears are hard to design, well. (Ask me how I know-I was a design engineer at GM for many years.)
I don't have the 3D skill or equipment to try. (sigh!)
      Anyway, thanks for the advice.
      Jim
