Oi Scott! The steam engine you have is a GS-4 4-8-4 "Warbaby" steam locomotive that the Southern Pacific used for both freight and passenger service. They primarily ran along the Pacific coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles but also ran throughout their system all across the Western USA. There are 3D printed replacement axles for $20 on eBay.
No. 4460 of the same class is preserved in the Museum of Transportation in St Louis MO. It is in the same black livery as this model. I believe that the wartime 4-8-4s were slightly heavier than the prewar "Daylight" express engines, because of using less valuable materials during wartime.
Just paint the trucks on the NY Cen. number 2. And boy you hit a home run at the show my friend !!!!👍🏻✌🏻🖖🏻
Oh Scott you like the Rio grande and chessie, you should make your own railroad called the Chessie Grande or something like that 😂
No you can never have too much rolling stock or engines for that matter. Great haul love the pink box car
Well Dave I sympathize with you on the steam locomotives I have 3 that don't run. The gears totally split into pieces. Might be too late. Run only diesels on my layout now, 👍👌 good luck with your repair my friend. 🇺🇸
What a score!!! Well bought!! Train shows are the only way to get into the hobby!!!
You’re having too much fun. I always tell people that model railroading is the best hobby.
As always - great choices/great buys!! Congrats!!! As for you NYC Alco PB unit - the silver trucks are correct. When delivered, the PA/PB units as well as the E7's came with Silver trucks. After shopping and maintenance they were painted black. Evidently it cost too much to maintain the silver The cars however all had black trucks . Enjoy!!! Have fun!!!
Ever Since You rebuilt your Layout that Layout Rocks🤘🤘🤘🤘.
You Still Hit those Train Shows Now Do what Ya Gotta Do 🤘🤘🤘🤘.
The excitement is palpable! Love it.
Awesome haul there dave I love the steamer that’s got my vote
Love the "Dudson" train!
The power Of train Shows.yeah Buddy.
Bachmann I believe does have a lifetime warranty. Check the paperwork, the certificate may be there, Since you opened it brand new on camera, they may be able to help you.
It’s Good Your Still Hitting those Train Shows Nice Haul👍👍👍👍.
Great finds!!! Quit going to train shows yeah right!!! Bummer about the steamer but you’ll get her fixed 😁
Bachmann makes the axel gears out of metal now with their modern run of the GS4 and Class J.
Great haul Dave, love the new train of D & H coaches, looks superb. Pity about your new steamer, hope you can fix it. The NY Central train is very impressive, you have a nice mix of stock now mate. Train show bargains is where its at.
Awesome finds! Just to let you know, you are right, the F units had a B unit that was shorter, but they also made an E B unit that is also 6 axle and the same length as your E7 A unit! There's nothing wrong with your setup in my book!
wow, so an E7 B unit must be massive.
The Athearn ready to roll have plastic McHenrys. They have a plastic knuckle spring that will break after a while. The metal trip pin also has a tendency to spin, and not operate the knuckle properly.
Great 👌 video
Nice haul Dave! I nailed the D&H......but that warbaby Golden State Type 4 is a gem!....even the Entry Level ones are a gem! When you installing the decoder? 🤣
I got the axle fixed, so I might consider a decoder if it lasts the week.
I will say that a four car D&H set is rather prototypitical. It was very common for the Adirondack/Laurentian to have very few cars like that. Or to have NYC cars mixed in as the D&H connected to NYC trains in Albany NY and took them north to Canada. So if you're ever in the mood don't be shy to slap a couple NYC coaches to that D&H consist!
you picked up some nice stuff Dave.. Thanks for sharing your haul
Ooooh what a lucky man he was. I guess you will do a video on lighting in the D&H passenger cars in the near future. You also have a Bachmann GS4 4-8-4 Black & Silver War Baby SP Southern Pacific #4454 with Smoke unit and the other rolling stock. You are definitely a lucky man. Great video as usual, Jersey Bill
I will need to upgrade all the wheels before I can do a lights install. And print some interiors of course.
Nice work Dave.
All great addions👍
Happy modelling
As far as your axle problem goes, I have taken to buying some fencing wire and trimming out my own metal axles which work great for me
Your the only one that can hear that somewhat low frequency sort of almost twisting sound
Here's an interesting story about the Wisconsin and Southern pink boxcar. This was a real car painted up to make awareness of Breast Cancer by the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad. The president of the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad decided to paint up the boxcar after his wife who passed away of Breast Cancer to promote awareness.
It's a very thoughtful gesture from the railroad companies.
We should work on a trade on the Maine central!!!!
You Can Never Have Enough Rolling Stock or Engines.
Nice haul, Dave.
It's unfortunate with what happened with your 4-8-4. I gather the footage you shot of it pulling the passenger coaches was before the split axle issue?
I bought a Bachmann Plus 4-8-4 in New York Central livery. Moved two inches and died. Couldn't get the thing to run. The issue wasn't with the track, it was the locomotive. I managed to get the refund, but never again with Bachmann Plus steamers. Good luck getting that girl to run again!
No, the end footage was after I glued it back together. Been running for a few hours today, so far it's holding up well.
Yea unfortunately that steam engine comes from the era when Bachmann had all kinds of issues and those gears were one of them. They are a lot more reliable now days, but because of their issues in the 80's and 90's a lot of people still have a bad opinion of Bachmann.
It's a real shame, as I genuinely like Bachman, but this tiny issue is ruining an otherwise great range of locos.
At least the GS4 doesn't have the pancake motor. I would be very careful of the drivers, and rods. I don't know if Bachmann fixed the rod problems they had with the pancake motor drive
Just purchased a Con-Cor Herzog rail tie (sleeper) gondola. Haven’t received it yet, so I’d be interested in your take on the quality of their cars. I’ll be in Edinburgh this week, so please let me know a good place to get some train video. Cheers!
I'm from Glasgow, so can't really advise on trains on the East. Waverly station is a safe bet for some trains though.
13:13…is that a red Bugsy or a split-window VW Beetle? I think it’s a red Bugsy.
It's a beetle.
NO... One can never have too much rolling stock
Hey....just hit the 16:32 mark on the video....and did you hear that weird cosmic noise????? or is it just me?
Yes. It might be time for a camera upgrade.
They do have BachmannGS4 replacement gears on E bay. 3D printed, don't know the quality. The KRM power car goes behind the loco. There is a generator in one end of the car which you can't walk through. Any Scale Trains come in yet? I am about $200.00 worried.
Postie has not visited me yet Greg. Did you get a tracking number?
You certainly have many train shows in your area, I am not as lucky. I stopped buying Any Bachmann since they have so many problems with their gears. So irritating
Dw5304 this guy makes the parts for your daylight he's a3d printer guy the classic model train's guy dug him up a dedicated trooper he was on a hunt to fix the day lights problem
Thanks, I have a 3d printer, but I need a very specific resin that is a little flexible or it will crack like the original parts.
Nice Score, Dave!
4-8-4 steamer is called a (Golden State) in the Southern Pacific Livery, I believe, Dave! SP also Has Big Apple, Governor and GS Daylight in 4-8-4 Configuration.
20 year old New is Called New Old Stock-NOS, Dave, lol
