Another great rebuild. Always loved my old blue box loco's. Still have all of them. They run forever. Thanks for sharing.

That exact Chessie GP35 was my first ever locomotive and ran it for 25+ years. It recently got donated to my nephew who is getting into trains. It was running pretty badly so I need to send them this video for maintenance!

I'm sure it will just need a bit of a clean.

If I had to guess, someone tried to use super glue of the top of the motor for a loose buss bar. Little did they know that super glue isn't a great conductor. Your method for replacing the buss bar with wires is the best way to solve the issue. About areas to clean - don't forget to clean the brass cups where the axle nubs make contact with the outsides of the trucks. This is where electricity is pickup on the older metal Athearn trucks. Along with cleaning, a light oil should be use for lubrication.

Good stuff Dave. I recently repaired an Athearn GP38-2. A couple of tips: 1. I *carefully* remove the light bar so that it's not in the way when putting the worm gear back in the front truck. 2. Remove the coupling from the flywheel so that when you reattach the worm gear to the flywheel the spline (shaft) is already in place and all you have to do is snap the worm back into the flywheel. No worries on the Athearn/Walthers gaffe!

The "flat tire" might be a cracked gear.
A tip for tinning - use a spring type clothes peg to hold the wire or bronze motor clip while you're tinning it.

I'd love to hear you say "brass brush" with a Canadian accent. It should be entertaining! ;)

Your sign-off tune could be called "Caboose Hop Boogie", since that what the Chessie System performed is a caboose hop. If you have or find any C&O, B&O and Western Maryland rolling stock, they are all under the Chessie corporate umbrella. Read about CSX Transportation, which brought the old Seaboard System/Family Lines group of companies into the fold in the early 80s. "Chessie System" as a brand lasted into early 1987. But, as with all mergers, the old names hung around awhile, until the equipment/rolling stock was upgraded/repaired, relettered, scrapped or sold.

On the wire stripper, down below the stripper section on the inside above the handle, there's a wire cutter there. I see you keep picking up the cutters then the stripper. ;)

Yes I know, but it’s awkward to use. Too bulky.

If you remove the bulb, you take away 1 amp of pull from the power.
