    Excellent chuga chuga sound at minimal cost and it's your railroad so you can run anything you like on it. Looking for to seeing it with a tender and what ever sort of consist you run behind it.

    Throw an HO scale engineer and fireman in the cab and it'll look like they're running a huge loco around.

    Yes these Hawthorne village trains were usually bachmann and the term your looking for is draw bar

    The classic bachmann ON30 2-6-0 mongul.
    I have about 20-25 , part of various sets
    The ones most desired though are the 0-4-0 porters, which are great for on30 layouts
    The best example would be the "Thunder Mesa " model RR which is disney themed in nature

    Good job Dave! On30, narrow gauge for O scale. HOn3 would be narrow gauge for HO. Using n scale track. I think the 30 is the track width. Pretty sure narrow gauge is around 3 feet. You could 3D print a tender and put some trucks on it.

    Yes it is a bachman I have a hawthorne village spirit of America. You can get parts from bachman.

    Welcome to the black sheep, otherwise the O scale narrow gaugers, you're going down a rabbit hole............Shays, Heislers, Climaxes, Forneys, Moguls, Critters, Galloping Goose....aah the list goes on..........I've got my own little stash, awaiting the right time to do the layout. Nice recovery of the loco too.

    You did everything correct with the gear up until you went to put it back on. You have to hone out the gear so that it slips easily over the shaft with little or no pressure then glue the gear in place once you have it positioned. You can usually only do this with a thick gear like you have on that locomotive. The split gear problem is why I refuse to buy a new Bachmann to this day but they make so many different brands it’s hard to stick to your guns with that. You did get it running and who knew it came with sound, lol. Absolutely great video from start to finish, Jersey Bill.

    hi dave best way i found fixing cracked gears was to get a short piece of fine wire and melt it in to each side of the plasic gear crack works well

      @ScottRails  Před měsícem +1

      ahhhhh, yes, like a tiny little staple across the crack. Good one.

    SMT or Classic Model Trains might have spare parts for this loco. They do dozens/scores/hundreds of repairs and have bin-loads of parts. I think SMT might be close to you in Canada, too.

  • @larryrogers5996

    That's a common problem with those locos the gear cracks

    Comment #2: I forgot to tell you that I have one of these and they all have the same problem. I've yet to see one that didn't have a split gear. Bachmann's best in that era and they never apologized, replaced, or sold new gears for any of the locomotives with split gears and that accounted for 50% of what they made. Thanks for letting me vent, lol, Jersey Bill

    I'd say to get a complete chassis wheels and all (available on Bachmanns parts store) but yikes on the cost (55 bucks) :( . Replacement pilots/cowcatchers are 15 bucks amongst other parts. Yeah best to find used . Otherwise , great job springing life back into that loco!!. I love On30 simply because of the same guage of track and gives a second option for model railroading,lol.

    Make sure the siderod guides which are attached to the cylindars aren't bent not to far inboard and interfering with the side rod axel pin/screw that is connected to the front wheels.

    Is there a chance its a smoker? The clicking could be the smoke "pump" of course you probably would have seen it on the axles.....

    Hawthorn Village has gone to far. In their newest model, there’s no valve gear, and much of the metal is now plastic

    • @ScottRails
      @ScottRails  Před měsícem +2

      I wonder if they are doing that to put less stress on the plastic gears.
