As an English teacher (with English being my second language), mad respect for Joey for that very technical and accurate explanation of the /r/, /l/ and /d/ 🔥🔥🔥
To people who learn English for general communication purposes, these things are hard to notice. But in my situation, many of my students can self-practice better when I go into details about the place and manner of articulation. It's always fun to see their reactions when they realize linguistic kids know everyone's vocal instruments better than they do themselves 😂

True, true. For example polish got so many weird af sounds that japanese pronunciation isn't all that hard.
i'm french and i can totally relate
I am czech and i can totally relate, just the pronunciation of the letters in japanese alphabet sound very similliar.
I am German and the sounds we have are a lot of the times similar to Japanese sounds what makes it a bit easier for us. But for gods sake I can't roll an R even though I am half Russian.
It's true for Spanish. Japanese and Spanish have a quite similar sound palette.
my advice for some of the people submitting japanese in this video (i've listed many things below joey missed out on, so feel free to keep reading if you want more insight).
grammatical correctness doesn't necessarily mean it's the most natural way of phrasing it.
for example, 三匹の猫を飼っています is grammatically correct, but 猫を3匹飼っています would be more common (and therefore natural) for us to say.
i personally think the person at 14:00 has the best japanese in this video. almost every one of her sentences is quite natural. but, she tends to overuse けど and が quite a lot, which leaves it with a somewhat awkward feeling (therefore sounding slightly more clunky). i did notice one small particle error where she said アッシュで呼んでください, where it should have been アッシュと呼んでください.
what joey mentioned about ありませんけど which he corrected to ありませんが is the same. ありませんけど is grammatically correct. but it would be more natural for us to say ありませんが there.
another thing i'd say, for the girl at 2:38:
話すことなら苦手です sounds a bit awkward. it would be better to say 話すことが苦手です. if you she meant like "when it comes to ~", she can also say 話すとなると苦手です there (though this isn't super common and 話すことが苦手です is more natural here imho).
secondly, どうすればもっと上手になりますか. this is a veeeeery slight correction. this phrase is grammatically correct, but it'd be more natural if she said どうすればもっと上手になれますか。
for the guy at 2:02 and the girl at 18:35 - you both said almost the same thing. the guy said 毎日日本語を勉強します and the girl said 実は毎日日本語と中国語を勉強します. this sounds like you have decided to study it going forward but haven't really started yet. in both of these cases, it'd be more natural to say 勉強しています to show that you're already undergoing study.
the guy at 10:18, his actual japanese was quite impressive. the one thing i'd say is with 僕がアニメの英語吹き替え版の声優なんですが, this'd be more natural with 僕は. his spoken japanese is quite impressive and he clearly has a large vocabulary. his 悪口 he pronounced わるくち but this word is read as わるぐち. i can't really explain why, but 吹き替え版の質を良くしようと死ぬほど頑張ってる sounds a bit awkward, too. if it was me, perhaps i'd say something like 仕事の質を高めるように努めています or something here. his accent sounds quite off for me, as he sounds kind of.. breathy? i guess is the word? it sounds slightly foreigner-y but i can't put my finger on why. perhaps japanese people speak it more nonchalantly, haha.
the girl at 18:28 makes a few grammatical errors which stick out to me as well. 一番緊張になってと思います sounds wrong. you can just simplify it and say 話すときが一番緊張します and that's fine though. 大変と思います would be better as 大変だと思います grammatically, but imo it would be better to say somehing like すごく大変でした。韓国人の彼氏に付き合って以来、日本語話すは上手になってかもしれません is also grammatically incorrect. firstly you can't stick a particle right after a verb without a nominalizer (の or こと), and you can't say かもしれません after te form. i'd maybe say 韓国人の彼氏と付き合ってから私の日本語力はとても上がりました。or something. last thing i can suggest for her is to watch her accent a bit. sometimes she says a word that sounds either super-foreigny or just awkward. her 以来 sounded very weird to me (almost chinesey, actually) and her します in 勉強します seems off as well. oh, and when she says "i've been a fan since 2015" she just says the number and nothing else, which is a no-no in japanese. when you want to say the year, you have to say 年 after the number.
as for the pitch accent/kanji thing at 19:36, joey misuses the kanji (honestly amazed he didn't pick up on it considering how much time he had to edit.. hmm..) and says 選考 when he should have said 専攻. HOWEVER, these two words are pronounced exactly the same so what he said about its pronunciation is still valid. i agree with joey in that what she said sounded more like how a native speaker would pronounce 線香 in my ears.
This, I am sure, was way more helpful than falsely reassuring platitudes. All these people are trying very hard, but it's easy to get a false sense of how 上手 you really are if you believe it every time someone says 日本語お上手ですね
Kingman Brewski Thank you! I appreciate the kind words.
I just came across this comment now and am 3 years late. I am the girl at 14:00. Thank you for the kind words and advice!! The "ga" and "kedo" are most probably from how I speak in my native language, and how I speak in general. I can limit it in writing, but I can't seem to do the same thing when speaking. I'm the girl in the last video ^^
Chinese and Japanese is the same. We have different counters. What really messes someone who speaks any combination of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean is the fact that the same (kanji, characters, hanja) are used, but they go to different words. Ahhh so confusing. Keep up the good work!
@@meimei98 Doesn't Korean have it's own characters?
@@shamsow Hey! Yeah! The Hangul alphabet is the most commonly used form of writing now. However, Hanja or Chinese Characters were used before Hangul was invented. So for example, my friend's name is 성일 in Hangul, but can be written as 星一 in Hanja, or Chinese. Think of it like Japanese Kanji and Hiragana ^^

!!!! I'm the guy at 10:18 and thank you so much for what you said! I think you bring up excellent points about dubs, honestly, and want to let you know that I haven't ever been offended by your opinions on the subject whatsoever as a dub actor. The whole point of a dub isn't just to translate, but to localize and make it compelling to a specific linguistic audience. Leaving suffixes like -kun in there takes away from that, I completely agree. Anyway, I truly appreciate your comments and you responding to my video, and I'm really flattered by your thumbnail. 😅 Looking forward to more videos, and thanks for doing the language-learning community a solid by making this one!
16:49 For my fellow Filipino viewers, we also have intonations.
Example:
- Basa = "Wet" (pronounced as 'ba-SA' [Low to a High pronunciation]
- Basa = "Read" (pronounced as 'BA-sa' [High to a Low pronunciation]
Same spelling but different meaning and pronunciation. See my fellow Filipinos, we still have hope on learning japanese even though it's hard.
Well I'm glad it helped a bit.
I just heard what Joey said about intonations being hard for english speakers and I remembered this book I read called "Basic Japanese (targeted for filipinos) by Yukuhiro Shimamura and published by National Bookstore" and there was a part where it said that we don't have intonations. But our language and the japanese language has its similarities like;
Japanese:
> ha-SHI (low-high) [bridge]
> HA-shi (high-low) [chopsticks]
Filipino:
> ta-YO (low-high) [stand]
> TA-yo (high-low) [we/us]
Japanese: a - ka - sa - ta
Filipino: a - ba - ka - da
Another thing that the book said that it's easier for a Japanese to learn the Filipino Language than Filipinos learning Japanese because japanese words have unfamiliar pronunciations that the Filipino language doesn't have like "za" "shi" "tsu" "ryu" etc.
BUT. In actuality it's vice versa. Filipinos will learn the Japanese language easier than a Japanese learning the Filipino Language. Due to our Colonial Past stated by the Book "Basic Japanese by Yukuhiro Shimamura"
We can also pronounce English quite well. You know. Due to our past colonial history. Filipinos used to have their own alphabet called "Baybayin" it looks similar to arabic though... but the Spaniards took over and it has been forgotten.
We can speak and write English with no sweat because we don't have our own Characters to learn. Like for example "Hiragana" ひらがな. Japanese people doesn't use the alphabet. They have their own "alphabet!" AND THREE OF THEM. Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji (well except Kanji, it's basically chinese [but still] ) .
That's why learning Japanese would be a bit easier for a Filipino due to its similarities.
You know the only reason why I would like to learn Japanese:
>92% Not needing subtitles while watching anime.
>6% To communicate with Japanese people
>2% others
At least in spanish we have accents that help us out
heck we can even understand a lil bit of spanish
This type of video is amazing. Part 2 someday? Series? Hell yeah.
Literally there's two reasons why I watch Joey, one: he's funny and two: he knows Japanese and I've always wanted to learn it and someday go there myself with friends

I love when Joey goes into Japanese mode, he does the "mmm" "hmm" etc. Joey could you explain the reasoning behind it?
It's part of Japanese culture to make sounds or say phrases (i.e. soudesuka?) to indicate to the speaker that you're listening. Complete silence from the listener feels like they are ignoring the speaker.
Mm mm. It's infective. After 2 weeks in the big 3, my sis and I were still doing it for 2 months.
I just discovered your channel through Chris' channel. Been learning Japanese for around 2 weeks now, and its super fun. Kanji caught me off guard to be honest. But I aspire to become fluent enough to hold any conversation, and I REALLY want to live in Japan in the (somewhat near) future.
i learned jp before watching but you gave me knowledge i never would of known after learning my first grade kanjii after watching i learned a lot from the clip and things you said about intonation and sentence structure. thanks everyone that sent clips i learned a lot.
With candy's "ame" and rain's "ame" intonation wise, I tend to think of it as:
HighLow for rain - because it starts up and comes down
and LowHigh for candy - from the motion of someone raising their hands to offer you candy...
Dont know if its a correct way of putting it but it helps me a lot in my current struggle of figuring out intonations!!
Really love your videos Joey!

I have been studying Chinese since high school in 2012. I am about HSK 4 fluency, and I consider Chinese to be my second language. Chinese was the only langauge offered at my high school other than Spanish (my dad is Spanish so I know some), and I really wanted to study Japanese, so I tried to pick something "close".
I started Japanese in University in 2017. I studied in America for 2 years, and as I said, I am now living and studying in Osaka. I started "learning" Korean about a month ago for my boyfriend. He speaks English and Japanese as well as Korean so we use the three interchangeably. It's a weird experience but I wouldn't trade it for anything. In the video I said "だんだん上手になってと思う". I tried to say "Since dating him, I think my Japanese speaking is gradually improving. But! Trying to maintain Chinese, Japanese, and start Korean is a challenge ahaha.
I'd like to say that I just woke up Japan to this video, and I'm getting ready to go play with some 4th graders for Cultural Exchange day! They've worked so hard to learn English and are going to show me around their school. I can't wait ^^
Thanks for your advice on 専攻. I can tell you with absolute certainty that when some of us "foriegners" are taught English, we are told "Japanese isn't like Chinese. No tones. Have fun." So we aren't careful. Like Dogen's らしい video ahahaha. Then again, sometimes my Chinese tonal habits seep their way into my Japanese and Korean.
At this point, I'm having a blast navigating the world of Asian Languages. I hope to be an Asian History professor and researcher, so being literate in one is necessary, why not all 3 major East Asian Languages ahahaa.
Anyways, thanks for reading and thanks for featuring me in the video. I can't wait to always be known as Incense Stick Girl, but it could be worse!
That was nice to read
Girl, I want to learn all of those languages, especially Japanese. I only know English and Spanish fluently, but my goal is to learn Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. It was lovely to hear your story and experience, such an inspiration! Thank you! Btw, you're so prettyyy! Wish you the best 😊
I wonder how it looks like if joey actually took care of his hair.
I really agree with reading books. I have been learning spanish for my whole life but I recently moved to Denmark and have not been able to keep talking spanish so I decided to read some novels and there are a lot of words that I did not know. This makes it a good way once you get to a high enough level of a language not only to keep up your skills but also to improve them.
You just spoke to a former member of an idol group Joey! Thanks for giving her advice and wishing her luck.
I'm finding a comment that points it out XD here it is
I've looked over comments but haven't seen any so...選考→専攻🙆🏻♀️
18:57 Speaks Japanse and Chinese
Has a Korean boyfriend
Korean: Ight let me get in here
Chinese, japanese and korean are 3 very similar yet different languages. Im korean myself and learnt chinese at school as a second language. After getting into anime and I started learning japanese, it pretty much was a breeze for hiragana and katakana. Japanese sentence structure is also quite similar to korean as well
@@davidkim9653 I know. Actually they are "Pretty similar". I wanted to learn Chinese first but then I went for Japanese because I realized 96% of Anime's are Japanese.
Hello! I'm the girl in the video.
Yes. That's exactly. What happened. I have been studying Chinese since high school in 2012, started Japanese in University in 2017, and literally started learning Korean about a month ago for my boyfriend. He speaks English and Japanese as well as Korean so we use the three interchangeably. It's a weird experience but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Anyways, I just woke up in Japan and I'm getting ready to go play with some 4th graders for Cultural Exchange day! They've worked so hard to learn English and are going to show me around their school. I can't wait ^^
Mei S aww that’s so cute and cool
@@meimei98 that's so adorable 😩💗
An awesome explanation for R and L. As Spanish speaker I learned those sounds growing up. I want to add to that to take it one more step back and first teach your ears to hear the difference between R and L. You can use anki and make "minimal pairs" flashcards. Once you train your ears to hear it it's much easier to produce it.
This was actually really informative. Didn't knew you have the certificates too damn...
I wanted to send my Japanese too but was too late :(
:
Katie murusidze I wanted to send in mines, but severe nervousness got to me. 😓
Awww better luck next time peeps
yes me tooo😭
@@galaxy_kitten95 welp me too, but since I'm living in Japan I just have to get that confirmation from one of my friends
The whole bit about how it’s not bad voice actors so much as it is lackluster voice direction makes me so happy that I’m NOT the only one who realized that.
dam! i luv you Joey for sharing Japanese language/culture vids! much love :3
Really love this Joey!
just imagining the phrase "my incense stick is japanese" is making me laugh
but i cant wait till i learn enough japanese so i can speak even a fraction as good as these people o.o
Oof. Imagine being known as the Incense Stick Girl.
*sweats nervously*
Mei S Dont sweat it, girl. You did great!
At least in English, I can still understand that mess up lol there are Japanese incense sticks you can purchase. One brand I know is called “Nippon Kodo” or Morning Star. 🙃
@@galaxy_kitten95 Thanks so much!!! Like I said "My most nervous time is speaking Japanese." Ahaha
@@meimei98 good job!!!!

Where are we now?
Awesome video as always man
I started studying Japanese on my own a few months ago. After nearly throwing my textbook and flashcards out the window when I learned about intonation (and had to relearn all the dang words the right way), I started watching Japanese CZcamsrs like you, Chris Broad, Dogen, etc. to get a better sense of the language and figure out a better way to study. Watching non-language related videos also gives me some extra motivation to pull through those study hours each day so I can someday be as cool as you guys. Speaking is of course the hardest part since I'm on my own. I read everything out loud, and I sometimes role play fake conversations in the car on my own. I had an actual conversation with a native speaker once. I was sweating bullets the whole time, but she was so nice.
19:46 Aha! I spotted an error! I believe the correct kanji is 専攻 in the context of an academic setting.
When I teach my Italian friends how to pronounce the -th sound I also you the method of explaining the tongue position. I have noticed that when you're learning a new language which as a different base origin, in this case from a Romance language to an Anglo-Saxon one, it is beneficial to learn how to position your tongue. It makes everything so much easier. At the moment I'm learning Russian, which lucky as a lot of similar sounds to English and Italian, so pronunciation is not much of an issue. After this, I would like to start learning Japanese since I love the culture and history of the nation. Plus, one of my best friends and I want to visit Japan together, and when we do, I would like not to have to rely on her too much (she is half Japanese and is fluent). I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I always love it when you talk and teach us about Japan and Japanese. Keep making fun and exciting videos Joey 🤗🧡
I'm Italian and I think I mastered the -th sound now, even though, nobody actually taught me how to, I've been studying English for a while now and the only thing I'm confident in is my accent, other than that I'm kinda fluent sometimes, but I'm not a lot of other times, and I've never had somebody to speak to but I'm trying my best and it's kinda working
I see the word "Anglo-Saxon" I like.
Idk if this would reach Joey, since this is coming a few months late, but I'd put my vote out there for you to do this kind of video as a series, maybe once a month or every other month. I found it incredibly helpful as a Japnese learner, especially regarding how to properly pronounce らりるれろ. It's been a struggle since I know English, Bengali, Spanish, and Hindi, so the "r" and "l" sounds have just been melding together from all those languages making it hard to pronounce those syllables. I tried your suggestion on changing how to approach those syllables and my Japanese friends have said they think my pronunciation has gotten better!
Thanks for all you do! I look forward to your next video! ^_^
Omg I love you but I clicked because you had a pic of Brandon McInnis!! Love him!
Guess it's about time this popped back up in my recommend feed
Your lighting looks like hearts in your eyes xDD
19:44 actually not 選考 but 専攻
選考 means choice while 専攻 is major.
That you did that is so nice ! I am majoring in Japanese also ,and I feel like talking is one of the most difficult things to do. Whenever I talk I get so anxious about rather or not I do it correctly. And if I don't ,it kind of discourages me. I am always trying to talk to my boyfriend (He is a native, so talking to him would be the best way to improve) But I always get too shy and switch back to english. Your video gave me a bit motivation, I definitly want to improve my talking skills!
