- World of Warcraft is FULL of Death Knights recently! Mostly because of Wrath of the Lich King, but DKs in the upcoming expansion Dragonflight look like a blast to play as well. But what exactly is a Death Knight and what kind of person plays as one? Well, as an expert on the WoW class, Nixxiom has decided to open the vaults of his knowledge, to teach to us about the five kinds of Death Knight players that inhabit World of Warcraft. From the edgy youngster to the bad ass PvP player - this list covers each Death Knight personality type that you can imagine.

10 years ago, I would have never admitted I was 13 years old playing my DK. Now I realize I walked the path my ancestors paved before me, and kept the path lit for the future generations.
As someone who made a death knight when I was 8, that first death knight really called me out.

Unholy Death Knight is my favorite, literally just because I can summon a small horde of undead on stuff.

All the player DK's have been created against their will, so I play mine as someone who hates what he is, but at the same time he knows how to find the beauty in the world and uses the power being a DK gives him to try to make the world a little better.
Being a Tauren he used to be closely connected to the nature and the earthmother and so he finds calm and peace in herbalism and greatly enjoys spending time in lush green areas. He may not be able to physically feel the warmth of the sun on his skin, but he feels it in his spirit.
I love this idea. Not seeing death as a complete negative.
yeah I played a night elf DK for years and my internal rp I guess was that she had definitely witnessed some messed up things etc. feeling lost at the beginning, but through her travels she was rediscovering herself and reconnecting w nature (still a badass dk killing anyone in her way, just w a soft side lol), so even though she wld never truly fit back into where she was before, she was more than all the death associated with her etc. I really love the DK lore and what you can do as a headcanon for your character.

I sort of play my DK as a soldier in the eternal war. Quiet, calm and generally speaking more than happy to spend plenty of time not doing much... while at the same time always training and preparing for the next world ending event. Because there always seems to be one, and as a death knight after Arthas fell, he has dedicated his existence to protecting Azeroth. Non war hobbies; patting pugs, meditating in the storm peaks, enjoying nature, people watching and trying to do Horde-Alliance book clubs.
I know like 3 rl veterans that do this stuff, so you're pretty spot-on.

To answer the question of if I wasn't playing WoW when I was 13, where was I? I was 13 in the mid-70s. I thought Pong was THE MOST amazing game ever and was SUPER excited when Space Invaders and Asteroids came out and I slayed it with those games! So, that's where I was when I was 13. Mind you, I admit that I was (and still am) into heavy metal and probably would have tried for an edgy name for my DK if I was 13 when WotLK came out.
I think I'm the sort of Death Knight player that doesn't care that much about the class, but like it enough to fart around on it now and again.
And um, Illidan is WAY cooler than Arthas.

Technically everyone could do /emote then press enter and type out "spits on you." because it still has the characters name on the emote bar, to macro onto it just for clowning around, and bypassing blizzards pointless change, of removing the emote, when used against players.
Plus Deathknights were a reason that got me into Warcraft in the first place, being this Unholy Thrall with the soul intention of Killing everything in their path, at the price of your free will, and family you use to know, a "hero you once were."
Plus the Battle for the Ebon Hold was a kick ass soundtrack that was introduced into the game minus the Molten Core's theme.
Plus old Deathknight felt better than retails before dragonflight prepatch update.
Like it made sense what kind of magic each Rune was used for, Blood for Blood magic, Unholy/Shadow for Shadow magic, and Frost for Frost/Cold magic.
And Death Runes being the total combination of every magic type, to seal a person's fate.
But other than this little spin of words, this was and is a beautiful video Nixxiom, appreciate you man.

I was 15 when Wrath came out but i can relate to the 13yo DK player pretty well
i'm a mix between 3 and 4, i like to enjoy the game at my own pace and all my characters are more like OCs than toons, they have lives and personalities, but they tend to themselves mostly to avoid toxicity, except when offering help to those who are new to the game that could use a handy tip or two.
I was absolutely the player that made and remade and remade death knights just for the starting zone. Did the same for worgen too.
My cousin was the metaslave DK. Made one specifically for their power in Wrath. Like me, he still plays WoW to this day.
Number 2 hits home a little. i had full bruta gear + bruta weapon + other pvp gear in week after Dk was released in pre-patch, But not for dps but for Blood DK tanking in BT and hyjal + lvled fast to lvl 80 and was lucky with gear :D

Back in time in retail WOTLK .My priest friend duelled dk. He tried to Mc him, he missed, he tried the second time Mc him, misses, he tried the third time, missed, he tried the fourth time he missed, he tried the fifth time and missed. Then he say "him 5 times I missed Mc, Dk`s have no brain"
Don't forget the DK player who only rolled a DK in wrath classic to finish their intro & get that special mount for retail.

I was the DK tank, a bit of #2, I had top tier gear, maxed factions, and outdps'd most dps, but friends were the priority. I honestly went that way so my Paladin friend(healer) and I could always get into a party.
In WOW Classic I no-lifed High Warlord on a suicide shaman. I was in-between jobs and had a friend accompany me on the journey. In hindsight I could have probably gotten my bachelor's degree for the time and effort I put into the game.
I skipped burning crusade when the Shamans off tanking was nerfed, and duel wielding became standard. I just prefered the old Windfury and a good two hander. The class never felt the same to me.
Wrath of the Lich King came out and I had said from the beginning how come no Death Knight? They were in Warcraft 1 after all. So I jumped at the opportunity and tanking appealed to me more than yet another massive pvp grind.

Death knight has always been my go-to class since mid-wrath and beyond. Joined right before wrath came out and mained frost mage at the time. Frost DK was the closest i will likely get to a frost battlemage. Enhancement shaman is cool and all, but i like swords over axes/hammers.
Plus, the idea of a werewolf with vampire abilities from blood death knight always just tickles me a bit.
Never really could get behind unholy DK, i know its often the better DPS spec, but just... eh. Managing debuff stacks and spawning pets just never really has been my thing. Partially why i struggle with getting in to rogue and warlock.

I was a DK main back when I played wow in WoTLK. For me I just loved the aesthetics and the abilities. Summoning an army of ghouls? Putting dots on enemies and spreading it around? Popping my blood rune to heal myself and my party members along with abusing the flat 10% heal whenever people were using vehicles in a dungeon or raid? Death Gripping the druid whenever he blew me into the abyss in EoTS so I can enjoy the mutually assured destruction? So many fond memories.
Ngl, I dunno what you did to keep me watching these videos considering I have absolutely no plans to ever play WoW since I love myself and value my sanity, but it was effective. Well done sir

I am number 3 and i am proud of it. I still play main dk on wotlk private servers.
I got relentlessly challenged to duels by the PVPer DK when I was just trying to level my warrior in Zangarmarsh back in 2008. After the 3rd or 4th duel they were getting annoying. So I guess on the 4th duel when I was kicking their ass and spamming execute I actually killed them or they they pulled some trash and died. Either way after that they left me alone.
I’m a bridge between multiple ‘types’…. I enjoy PvP, spend the bulk of my time out in the world going solo, and occasionally group with people to do other events; but I enjoy PvP above everything else in WoLK and Retail.
You missed one. The glyph of corpse explosion DK. I never missed a chance to pop a dead ally corpse, until blizzard nerfed fun again. Hilariously fun times...
I just like the flow of combat and class mechanics of blood DK circa wrath: It reminded me a lot of the way pally used to play and I didn't like the pre-wrath 3.0 changes made to pally. [shrug] Pre-Wrath by cycling through judgments and seals of light and wisdom I was able to maintain my hp and mana, both actively healing and passively healing in order to solo difficult content. I didn't like my pally after Wrath came out - they changed the mechanics that I liked: but Blood DK - felt very similar, if less capable.

I was a warlock when I was 13.
Mainly because I never made it to 55 but the promise of being able to explode corpes once I hit 55 kept me going despite never reaching it.
Honestly, I just macro bind Death Grip to the "Get over here you idiot" voiceline from the headless horseman. Dont worry, I have the same voiceline bound to my priest's Leap of Faith.

There’s actually a sixth type of player. The fully blind players, who exploit all of the death knights, ranged and close-up attacks. Because yeah, there’s a fully flushed out blind community on this game with add-ons. and honestly, I can’t say I blame them. I actually modeled my DK after my warrior, so essentially, he’s the same character. just, the unliving version of my warrior.
ahhh the good old days, I remember raiding nax on my blood dk (i had to be blood because i was 2nd highest ranked dk in the guild and the main one was unholy) we were always neck and neck in the dps meters till i finally got the betrayer of humanity 2 h axe haha (blood was better for the 10% crit buff for the rest of the raid or 15 i cant remember exactly)
You gotta admit though, the dk starting zone is the best
sadly ive encountered a “Religiously Arthas” (0:30) but he wasnt a teenager. He was a fully grown man who acted like that, and that dude actually was legit a gully grown Goth man.
I'm not convinced there are even teenagers left who play WoW. Like, given everything available on the market how could you end up in WoW at this point?

Six types... I played a DK as an Alt/secondary(Already maxed out hunter and ended up spending more time on my DK) and I was nowhere like any of them. Actually when i was playing my DK i was just the same as when i played my Hunter.

Hmmm....I suppose I'm a combination of the Immersed and the Depressing. I'm a lore nerd but I RP my death knight as basically the 'good person with bad powers' trope. Restored to her original self mentally albeit with the trauma and memories of what she did as Scourge, but determined to balance the scales and save more lives than she took. No super-edgy emotionless emo here.
What was I doing at 13? I don't know if I can remember that far back...I think I was in an arcade plaing PacMan or Ridge Racer...in a Pizza Hut with the little red cups for soda...good times.

In my experience the edgy named DKs are the greatest nolifer metaslaves in all version of WoW.
From the beginning my main I have always been a human paladin, be Light Be With You
pvp montage videos. i lost track of how many random bladestorm montage moments were on here set to Feuer Frei back in 2008.
I would have played a DK at 13 if WoW was around in 1992.
JFC alright so-
I started wow just before BC came out originally, (I was about 10 or 11) but I never made it to max level until wrath on my DK. Shortly after I got wrath I was around lvl 50ish on my male human warrior with a randomized name and had NO idea what I was doing or how to properly play the game. I had never been inside an instance before and just quested, usually alone. I didn't even know how to use a keyboard correctly back then and every time I needed to talk to someone in game I would have my dad come over and do it for me. I knew next to nothing about the game, had never played any of the RTSs but when I found out about DKs and saw the login screen of Northrend I knew I had to have one. I was questing in Tanaris at the time but It was going slow, like everything up to that point. So for the first time since like, Westfall I went into a zone where the mobs were actually YELLOW to me, Un'goro. But I didn't quest, (mostly because where even the fuck were the quests there) I just farmed the raptors near the entrance of the zone. I farmed those until I finally hit 55. Yes, I farmed level 50ish raptors for 5 whole levels as a warrior in level 20-30 greens and a blue axe from Duskwood. (Also I was fury at the time but used a 1 hander and shield most of the time) Finally I hit 55 and instantly hearthed back to Gaditzan, dumped everything into my dad's GB that was not soulbound and vendored EVERYTHING that was and dumped that too, then logged out and with such excitement to finally be rid of my shitty warrior I nearly deleted him before making my DK. Luckily it was only nearly.

My first DK-
I had never played one of those goat things before, but had tried every other alliance race at the time, so I made my DK one of them. But, being now, you guessed it, 13 at the time, of course I made it a female because boobies. And yes, I had named her something edgy, 'Frozendoom' I still remember it to this day. Upon logging in I was greeted with green quality equipment the likes of which I never thought I would ever obtain on my shit ass warrior, I was already happy with my choice just for the upgrade in gear alone. The DK starter zone was, and still is by far my most favorite questing experience in World of Warcraft as a whole, every single little detail was amazing to my 13 year old eyes after 2+ years of having done just the vanilla questing, alone. I got to summon a pet, as a plate wearer, I got an epic undead horse after a few short quests, and I got to be the bad guy and destroy the living. You get to ride a fucking zombie dragon near the end, then take part in an EPIC battle against the forces of the light with a super powered buff. I was in heaven. Everything about the DK was absurdly good and I loved every moment of my slaughter, to the point where after I had finished the starter DK area and got to SW, I wanted to do it again and just logged out and made a new DK on another server. And then again, and again. A few days later I had found out there was a character limit for your account, 50 at the time, because I tried to make another one and it said I couldn't because of the character limit. During this time I had tried a number of talent choices, finally settling on unholy for my main server's DK.
Post DK starting area-
As someone who had gone years getting my ass kicked every time I entered combat, I wanted to go back to those old quests I had done on my warrior and stomp those NPCs that had been the bane of my existence for so long. I didn't make it to level 80 until near the end of wrath as I didn't stop doing low level quests until I had the ambassador title and 999/1k rep with each of the core alliance reps. By this point, the fungeon finder had been added to the game and I could now simply que up for a 5 man, anywhere at any time without needing to do the one thing I was still awful at, talking to other human beings with my keyboard. I think I spent the majority of my time from 60s to 70 just Qing for BC 5 mans, I had attempted to do some BC quests but did not find much fun in hellfire or Zangarmarsh. Once I finally hit 68 I dropped BC instantly and went straight to Northrend. I had gone to Howling Fjord once on my human warrior while questing in Menithil and had already got to experience the boat ride to the first town, and the music. This time however I went to BORING tundra. I don't remember many specifics about questing through most of wrath besides the wrath gate and the attack on Undercity however. The later I had only recently got to experience for the 2nd time in my life, on the Dalaran wow private server, this time from the horde perspective. I did do wrath 5 mans as well for the majority of my time from 70-80, but with que times being so long for a DPS I had plenty of time to enjoy questing as well.
The max level experience-
Eventually I managed to finally, after 3+ years of playing this game, hit the CURRENT max level. While sitting in my 5 man Qs I went back and did the rest of the wrath quests I had missed along the way, doing every quest I could find in every zone until I got the lore master achievement for Northrend. One of which being the Tuskar. I had finally reached exalted rep with them and saw they had 2 weapons that were way higher level than my shitty quest weapon. One was a 187 polearm which I had very low skill in, the other, an ilvl 200 epic that was big, and wooden. Yes, I *nearly* bought the fishing pole to use as my weapon but talked myself out of it, even though it had higher dps on it than the polearm as the 187 blue had actual stats and stuff on it. Some time later, I had amassed enough gold I thought I might be able to afford something from the AH, after spending about 15 min browsing the weapons there, I found it, the weapon I have a huge amount of nostalgia for, the 2 hand epic ilvl 200 mace crafted by blacksmiths. It was the only 2 hander of that level on the AH and, took nearly all my saved gold, but I got it. I finally had my first ever epic, and a weapon at that. I had this time for months until my ilvl was high enough I could Q for the ICC 5 man heroics. At which point I found out about the 232 epic 2handed axe that had a SOCKET! I wanted it so badly that I made sure I did my ICC 5 mans every day until I finally got my hands on it. During my time farming these 5 mans, I had found that, my dps was fucking shit. Just the worst. I was usually 4th or even under the healer according to people that posted their recounts. So I decided to switch my spec and try out another spec, get recount myself so I could see my own dps. I went blood dps for about a month, my dps did increase to about 3rd or even 2nd on some runs, but then I went frost. Oh frost, my pride and joy for 7 long years, After switching to frost I was rarely NOT at the top, only people that had loads of ICC raid gear could even hope to beat my massive, throbbing obliterate crits. This was it, this was the spec for me. I eventually got my axe and only needed to keep farming 5 mans to get my ICC 10 normal tier items. I was finally ready for raids.
Gearscore and my first ever raid-
Along the way I had met what would become one of my closest friends in game, a guy named Gwaltney. He helped me get my gems in order as, prior to his advice, my thought process was, if I have more stam, I will live longer and can do dps more. He played a rogue and a blood DK, we had met in those ICC 5 mans and liked my high 2 hand frost DPS, so befriended me to have me along for his 5 mans in the future. He was one of the few people I talked to, still being completely worthless on my keyboard. I had told him that I was only 14 and that I didn't know how to use a keyboard but he was fine with still being my friend since apparently my dps was just that good. Eventually I had saw someone looking for a dps for their ICC run, I think it was 25 but it sure was not heroic, it may have also just been a 10, don't quite remember. This was going to be my first ever time entering an instance with more than 5 people on it, so either would have seemed like an army to me. Gwalt actually told me to whisper the leader and ask to join, so I did. I told them I was a frost DK dps and wanted to join, they asked what my GS was. I then panicked as I had no idea what that meant so I asked Gwalt, luckily he also had this addon and told me what it was. I relayed this number to the leader and instantly got an invite to the raid. I don't remember much from this raid other than the fact many items which could have been upgrades dropped for me, of which I got 0. And we stopped at the big LK himself, without even doing a single attempt. This was the first and last time I got to see him inside the raid and not just while questing or in the 5 man where you run away from him. I would end up never killing Arthas until cata, sadly. I don't remember if I ever ran ICC again after that first time, I sure as hell did not bring any raid items with me into cata besides my tier items that I bought for badges.
This pretty much sums up my wrath experience on my DK specifically. Also of note, I was and always have been an altoholic, this is also why it took me so long to level as I rarely stuck to just one toon. My DK was the first character that I really stuck with long enough to actually do anything with outside of just leveling.
Cata and beyond-
Eventually, about a week before cata launched, I had got into doing pvp and had farmed out a near full set of wrathful items for pvp. Then cata hit and all of my wrathful items became worthless, so that was time well spent. My parents had got me the cata box for xmas, but I wanted it right away so I could start playing and leveling with everyone else, so I opened it early anyway and started playing the first week of the xpack. I race and sex changed my fem gote to a male human as over the years had grown out of 'but boobies tho' and wanted to instead look like a cool badass instead. I actually didn't even know about the every man racial until I did this. I stayed 2hand frost for all of cata, thru mop and to the end of WoD, up until 7.0 when it was fucking removed and what they *DID* to my spec that can never be forgiven. I mained this build for 7 long years on retail wow, waddling up to my enemies slowly and then hitting them with obliterates. It was simple, and it was fun, for me at least. Over the years many people had tried to get me to convert to UH or at least DW frost, saying "it's better, 2hand frost sucks" To which I told them to fuck off, out dpsed them and their DK's with my big, overcompensating weapon, and topped the charts for deeps. I even started playing private servers last year to try and relive these experiences with my DK, playing, wrath, mop and then finally a cata private server. All of which I remade my 2 hand frost DK on and, each time got told I was 'doing it wrong' while out dpsing the very people telling me to switch specs or builds. Sadly though, the WoW community as a whole is the utmost toxic and vile community that exists in gaming, which has made me quit every private server I try. I am now a 27 year old, who just wants to play his 2 hand frost DK, the way it was played pre 7.0 when they fucked over everything that made frost just as a whole a fun spec to play, yet wants nothing to do with the wow community.
