First of all, you can use it with A LOT of words to transform it into - do, da, dum, dumas, daquele, doutro, etc, etc... the list goes on.
Then, it has many different meanings and some verbs ask for it and I am here today to tell you all about it :)
If you've been struggling with this Portuguese preposition, this video is for you!
Ah, and don't forget to answer the question I ask in the video - leave your answer in the comments section below :)

Hi
I've just started watching your channel but I'm loving it so far so thanks.
We have a house in Madeira and there are two confusing things. First I think the rule for de is different because Madeira is an island but I've forgotten what it is! Also our road is called Rua DO Janeiro and I don't understand why it isn't Rua DE Janiero like the city.
多謝!
Thank you so much for your support :)
Thanks for this video! In some of your examples, you used 'ti' instead of 'tu'. Can both these words be used interchangeably to say 'you'?
Olá! Thank you for your support! No, "tu" and "ti" both mean you in different cases, but "ti" is only used after certain prepositions, like after "para" - para ti (you can never say "para tu"). I hope this helps! :)
PS - I speak about all of this in detail in my courses. If you want to check them out, please go here: school.learn-portuguese.org/courses
Hi teacher Mia, how to know if feminine or masculine the things? Obrigada.❤
i like your video
Querida professora, a colocação dos pronomes àtonos junto do verbo pode ser um verdadeiro pesadelo para nos estrangeiros. Então, vou-te mandar, ou vou mandar-te é sempre uma quastão "to be, or not to be" para nos, os pobres estudantes de português. Obrigado antecipadamente pela sua explicação.
Eu sei! Acho que vou ter que fazer um vídeo sobre isto! É um tema que demora algum tempo a explicar...
Eu gosto da tua aula
Sou da cidade do Mexico!? Tens uma lista de verbos que precisam da preposição "de"? Esses são os que eu luto!!
Olá 👋 na verdade tenho um artigo de verbos com preposições : learn-portuguese.org/portuguese-verbs-with-prepositions-2
They include verbs that ask for the “de” 😊🤗
ALSO, I live in the north (2 hours NE of you!) and I now notice the difference in accents from the south. I hear you pronouncing "the "d" in "depois" and de" as more of a "th" sound. Is this more common in the north? Many people around where I live say "b" instead of "v" : )
its the standard as an allophone for D, mostly between vowels. Same happens with "g" and "b", they become softer.
Eu sou da Cidade dos Chilangos (Mexico) 😊
Thank you very much for this lesson. You helped me a lot ❤️
I have one question. Could you help me ? Is that correct ?
"Eu gosto da Maria."
Eu gosto de video
Obrigada pelo feedback :)
Beijinhos
Eu tenho o mestre em linguistica portuguesa e gostaria de falar com voce algum dia...
eu gosto do teu video, is this correct?
Siiiim :)
I was wondering if you could clarify if 'Algarve' should have the article. I have heard it said that strictly speaking it shouldn't but I more commonly hear 'do Algarve' and 'no Algarve'. I am assuming the article is retained as the word was originally derived from the arabic for 'The West' and so tentatively follows the same rule as 'O Porto' and 'A Guarda'. However, purists may argue that 'algarve' is not a word used in the Portuguese language and only exists as a name and therefore the article is not required.
Olá Michael :) In my opinion Algarve does have an article. And I have to be honest, I didn't even know that there was a discussion about that. Algarve, however, is a bit different, as it is not a city nor a country, it is a region and regions form Portugal almost all have an article before - o Douro, o Alentejo, a Beira Alta...etc - so I guess different rules apply here. ;) Interesting, though, that you've heard that Algarve should not have an article. I wonder who said that? I could be totally wrong (which I don't think so), but I do believe firmly that Algarve does have an article :)
@@MiaEsmerizAcademy Muito obrigado pela sua resposta. It is very possible that I misunderstood and overthought the possibilities. Your explanation sounds much more reasonable and as I said, I have only heard it with the article. I had a sneaky suspicion it was a bit of an urban myth. That's great... I can put that one to bed now!
@@Horhne :) I am glad I could put your mind at ease regarding this topic! Now on to the next ones hehe. Beijinhos :)

Please clarify, the pronunciation of da ...is it a regional accent? You say da like English ( the )
Olá! No, this is how we say it. The vowels in Portuguese from Portugal tend to be more closed. 😊
I really like how you say da - it sounds like tha/the (voiced). It is very noticeable, the pronunciation 😀
I think that the Portuguese pronunciation of the letter "d" between vowels is very similar to the way they are pronounced in Spanish.
