I can't believe I've been avoiding sewing fly zippers for the longest time when there were such easy methods out there! Highly recommend you try this way out to help you understand the process. Maybe once I perfect this, the other methods won't seem so confusing. Have a great weekend! :)
Honey yes😍 thanks you i was looking at my pants saying to my self " i would love to wear you but zipper is broken" 😅
Thanks for your amazing cobtent can you please suggest me a sewing machine and the best serger to sewing knits and lycra.
I've never touched a sewing machine or thought about making clothes but I love watching your videos so much!
We are all afraid of front fly zipper... we can all relate
It's so inspiring to see the parts where you struggle through the visualization and come out the other side with a beautiful product! Thanks for not cutting those parts out!
Thank you!!
I seem to recall being taught to always do top stitching from the right side because it's going to show so it's easier to make sure your lines are straight and clean.
I'm so happy you gave a shout out to Kim Dave! She is a pattern making queen!
I like to think I am a coolirpa seamstress, when in reality I'm Micarah Tewers and i think I'm okay with that
Both are awesome, so I would be okay with that too. I do dream on sewing like Bernadette Banner though. Her precision is amazing.
I mean Micarah is amazing haha.
Micarah is some kind of magical genius though. I could sew like her and it would end up looking like trash. But micarah's look amazing.
Using measurements and patterns like April does, is consistently good
@@MysticOceanDollies me too but I'm horrendously impatient and can't measure for shit. So I just slap shit together and hope it works
Micarah is kind of a genius. she needs to learn some professional patternmaking though
I don't sew (does basic only😆) , but I watch because it's so fun and interesting. It helps me to relax my mind after a tiring day.
Thankyou so much April 💕
Aww thank you! 🥰
It's so great to see your learning process. For the top stitching of the fly, I think it is probably sewn from the right side (rather than the wrong side) because sometimes you can use top stitching thread that is only in the main spool and a different thread is used for the bobbin thread. At least, that's what I have noticed in my RTW jeans/pants.
Good lord you're an angel. Thank you so much for this...you literally saved my midterm exams❤️
This was very informative, because i don't like doing front fly opening either
I like them better than sewing invisible zippers now haha
Me too
I use to love invisible zippers, but not no more. But you've changed my mind
@@coolirpa that's funny, I feel the exact opposite!!
Love the new animated intro and setup at the start of the video!
Thank you!
now she's unstoppable!!!!!!!!!!
I recommend using tape that is the same width as your zipper. Line it up and follow the edge of the tape when sewing. Then you can just rip the tape off! And you’ll have a straight line!
I really really liked you stopping and listing your questions as you went along and then providing the answers you found and why. It was super informative both sewing-wise and also to know your thought process. Thank you!
Agreed. A large of of April's appeal is that, despite her professional training, fame, and expertise, she is relatable to the home sewer (sewist?). Since even the pros have moments of doubt, there is no excuse for we amateurs to avoid tackling complicated projects.
Thank you! i needed this to continue making the shorts for my fiance :) i really couldnt understand the written instructions, but now with visuals, things became easier :D thank you April!
that looked more complicated than the method with extra pieces.. haha.. i liked using the one with the extra pieces because it looks cleaner than having one zipper tape top stitched and one not. but yes, every pants is different. also, we top stitch with the shorts facing up because the top needle is the front stitching... it won't look nice with the bobbin stitching on top instead... the same way high fashion designers always stitch their seam allowance with the front on top of the back fabric changing orientations to accommodate this. but of course, not all do this, but if a brand is very detail oriented to the tiniest details, then yes, this is a thing... :3
Thank you for showing your struggle! I have a bunch of projects I'm scared to start that I'm gonna screw up and in the middle of this video, I finally ordered swim elastic so I can use fabric I couldn't pass up on Etsy! Let's conquer our sewing fears together 😅
Thank you so much, this is the most sensible tutorial I have watched on how to do this. You showed all of your steps very clearly. I think I've watched probably 50 other tutorials and was still on the fence on how to do it but this video did it for me!
Omg, I felt like I was the only person who was scared of front fly zippers. LOL! I always sew side zippers in my pants to avoid them, but now I will try to practice on some scrap short samples. Thanks so much April for doing this video. I know I can do it too, but just have to get past the weirdness of it!
This tutorial is SO clear, I just managed to put in the zipper on my first try!! thank you SO much!
I’ve been teaching myself to sew. I struggle with putting zippers on!! I’ve tried it once and never tried it again. I’m going to try again and tag you once I get it right lol. Thank you for sharing this
I think it’s cool that you show yourself doing things you aren’t confident in and that you show your mistakes. It proves that everyone starts as a beginner, even if it’s just a different area of something you already know how to do.
funny I literally attempted this for the first time last week. and I'm trying again this weekend! we got this!!
Yes!! KIM DAVE!!!!!!!!! She is amazing!
This was so useful! Thank you, April!
I made my first pair of fly front shorts about a week ago, and the tutorials I found via google were vastly different. I think in the future I will combine that method with yours to make something nicer. I love how well you explained the process and the fact that you chose to show us your mistakes and struggles
Great info! Thanks for sharing
High five for facing your fear April ! 🙌🏻 I, too, was afraid of sewing front fly zipper for too many years before I finally gave it a try. But I have to say I like the method with separate pieces better. It looks less confusing to me, even though I have to carefully watch all the steps every time so I don't forget anything on the way. It's all about personal preferences !
me and my 4 pairs of broken fly pants really needed this video. thanks queen
I love the intro!
Also love that you watch Kim Dave 🤗 she’s my favorite!!
I've been stuck on how to do a fly front zipper for a while so this was supper helpful. Thanks! ✨
Your early videos from years ago helped me get started with sewing. I sewed a front fly zipper for the first time a month ago, and I delayed the project because I was so terrified of making a front fly!!! Thanks for the video!
I get the feeling! Hope this video can help clear up any confusions you had. My second time was way faster and came more naturally so practice helps a lot!
Finally! Great video & instruction.
Thank you
Great video! I am trying to draft a fly on a pattern that has a side zip. A tip for the fly top stitching, you can sew a line of basting from the back side to follow next to, then rip it out when top stitching is finished.
I remember doing what you are doing. I absolutely feel validated. I informed someone supposedly knowledgeable., and she did not approve. I feel so much better.
From long time back i wanted to learn how to make front line zipper, but was not able to butThank you so much April for this wonderful video, this is life saving ,I'll try making this today😍❤️😍😍😍❤️
This is so necessary, and since you're one of the YT ogs....its soooo appreciated that you're transparent in your learning and shouted out your teachers. And even more, you CONDENSED your learning and showed us how to mash several sources to benefit your specific needs!!! Anyway... 💁🏻♀️ #yousaqueen and makes front fly zippering a lot less stressful -- still daunting. Hahaha
--oh! Really like your sewing corner. It makes for a great instructional backdrop. 👩🏻🏫👨🏾🎓 #serioustalk
This was super helpful!
Hi April!! Excellent vlog.. I followed Diane Deziel for installing a zipper & pretty much nailed it...
💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
Great job girl, ya did wonderful!
The way my mom taught me was to place the zipper so there’s an inch or two extra at the top. That way you can leave the wide/bulky zip tab above the sewing area and it’s easier to sew straight lines. When you’re ready to sew on the waistband, you can tuck the extra zipper at the top in between the two layers, or just snip it off once you’ve moved the zipper down.
I've never been so confused my whole life, but I still watch her videos 😂❤
Loving the new intro 💕💕
Oh my god I’m terrified of this too! Thank you for this video. I think I will try it now :) I’m so grateful for your channel. It has helped me grow my sewing skills so much. 🙏🏻
Yaaas!!!! I have been so scared of these!!!
This was one of my biggest fears too! I'm definitely going to attempt it now. This tutorial was super easy!
Zippers are my biggest sewing challenge, thank you for this video! Your work is so motivational
Relate! Thankyou for the tips 👍
Love this
! Thanks for the video
Great job! I was thinking , I don’t remember zippers ever being that difficult. Then I figured out I have never done a fly. I’ve done tons of zippers but never a fly, wonder if my brain was just avoiding it.
April, thank you for this video! I am not a fan of making front flies too, think I learned in college same method you did and besides confusing takes a lot of time... and this method you showed here, looks amazingly easy in comparison!
WOW this was so helpful!!!
This video helped me so much! Thanks!
Hey April I love and enjoy watching your videos. You should do a video of sowing or diy furnitures, like a small chair.
Thank you, now I can finish my shorts! 🥳🤩
Thank's! Looks easy!
Excellent video. Thank you for all your research .
I was watching Diane in french for a long time, then seen she had another channel.
How ironic! I've been watching her in English and just saw she has a French channel. 😂
Rosie Jacobs hehe, shes a busy woman with good videos.
Gosh, I wish I'd had this video when I made my first pair of shorts a couple weeks ago! 😅 I was too scared to try a fly zipper, so I ended up just doing a multi-button closure. Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing!
I was avoiding todo 🤣🤣🤣 Now it's look easier to me. Tanks!!!
I want yo try soon.
Awesome video!
Very helpful! Just subscribed xoxo
I love that intro!
Definetely going to practice!
Hey April, I just want to say I have been watching your channel for about 3 years now and I want to thank you for making these videos because you made me getting interest into sewing. I am planning to get into Apparel Design & Merchandising course after I graduate from secondary school and I want to know what do I need to know or do before getting into that course.
I had the same fear for years! But recently I sew two pants with front fly sippers with the tutorial from @soseweasy it’s the same method but she leaves the zipper long till the very end! The zipper sticks out where the waistband will be and eventually she cuts the top off.. genius! That makes it so much easier if you have a small sewing machine and can’t get past the zipper pull very easy!
The reason why you should sew fly from the right side.: the upper thread looks better, as it is easier to adjust. I hope i could help.☺️
Same! I was taught the one were you cut the fly separately and attach, tried looking on CZcams for sth easier and I came across the Diane Deziel video like 2 months ago or so... It made it so oo ooo much easier🙉.. (and I was like please why do people still do that complicated method
Omg I have been watching your videos for a while now and I finally just got your name! Coolirpa... April backwards + cool!
I watch kim dave for all my pattern tutorials!
Good way of teaching
Thanks
I have been sewing for years and have not done one yet. I do want to make a pair of pants so this has helped push me along, to tackle it.
Your videos give me so much inspiration 😻
I just started sewing because I needed some face masks. Can you suggest an appropriate project to do next to learn a little more?
i love your new intro!
Thank you! My cousin is a talented animator and created it for me! 🥳
This is really helpful- I've been avoiding front fly zips too
Wow im early 22mins ago! Philippines its 1am here. I love watching you! I hope I learn to use a sewing machine soon. Its so expensive to own one. :(
lol talk about time, I was working on putting in a longer fly in a jean skirt so I could get it on and off easier and this pops up in my play list.
What!! I'm one of the first to watch this video..BTW April you're so talented and a very good tutor too especially to me🤗❤❤
Happy I can help!
when shortening a zipper I always take a lighter and melt the cut end a little to prevent it from fraying. don't over do it, just a little melt will save you a headache later on.
Hello! Thanks for your tutorials, you are very good ... a greeting from Sicily!
omg THANK YOU this is so helpful!!
Yay! Happy it can help you as well!
Thank you 🙏
April THANK YOU! I have the same fear hahahaha and recently I wanted to change a zipper of one pair of short jeans
This is So helpfull!!
We love u!
The wide legs pants pattern (free) from Pepermint magazine has a really easy tutorial on that as well !
Thanks for help
Simple but great advice mentioning the muslin--i had forgotten i had like 3 metres that my sis gave me years ago. Otherwise i would've attempted this on my least-needed sewing fabric & that would've been a shame. My 1st couple attempts sucked but i'm gonna keep trying, the 2nd wasn't **quite** as bad as the first lmao >.
Haha, I misread the title of you video as "come fly with me", which started this soundtrack in my mind and thinking you go April with that sassy title.
One suggestion for shortening zips is to attach it without cutting it first making sure to line up the zipper stop at the bottom. The reason why you would do it like that is with the extra length will allow you to keep the zipper out of your way and at the bottom you can use the original zipper stop and won't have worry about the zipper tape fraying when you cut it. So after you install the zipper you open it the cut the excess from the top. MAKE SURE YOU OPEN THE ZIPPER BEFORE CUT. You don't want to cut out the zipper tab with the excess
You confessed that like all of us don’t already know you avoid making front fly zippers like the plague 😂 at least we agree that they’re scary!!
Thank you 🎨🎉🎉🖍🎊
If you enjoy using a paper pattern, I highly suggest Megan Nielsen’s Ash Jeans pattern. I thought that her instructions were so easy to follow and she has additional instructions and more pictures on her website if you still have any problems!
I also believe that you topstitch the fly because when you’re sewing jeans, you usually have the contrast color thread (usually the yellow thread) for your top thread, and the blue jeans thread for your bottom bobbin thread.
I like your's videos,Im learn a lot... Thanks. (Estoy aprendiendo Ingles )
I also added a zipper fly to a pair of shorts a few years back. I would say it is hard drafting the pattern, and I think sewing that fly curve can be challenging cause I want to use the same stitching technique on pants. I made two pair of shorts but the first one came out perfectly while the second pair was a bit off. It’s sad, cause the first pair was too small for me and the second was actually my size 🤦🏽♀️. I still have the first pair that I intend to sell on my shop one day!
Thank u sooo much😘😘😘😘😘😘
Wow
I'm early today! ❤️❤️
💗💗💗
Awww you noticed me! I've been watching your videos since last year ❤️ I'd like yo learn more though before buying a sewing machine 😊 thank you so much!
