Today I carefully flew the Mini2 in freezing fog conditions. The drone didn't want to land. I guess the drone recognised the clouds below as ground. Luckily at a certain moment it come down again.
The icing and the ' max load ' caution were exactly as you showed in your video. It was a good experience!

I’ve never flown in that know of weather before. This is great information to know as it’s not something most people would not think about. I would have figured the ice would have built up on the back edge vs the leading edge.

I have had this happen with my P2 vision plus years ago. The flight issues started only when one or more blades started to fling off the ice buildup causing an imbalance in performance between the rotors. Luckily it was not at a very high altitude. Scary stuff.

  • @Rubik3x

YES! Exactly. I experienced this with my Autel EVO II Pro. Flying on a cold, foggy morning, after a few minutes I got to the top of the fog, panned around a bit and started a Hyperlapse. Then I got "High Battery Temperature, flight performance limited" warning and so I decided to start back down. Then a few moments later I got "Battery Overheated" and "Critical Low Battery" and the drone came down rapidly right where it was. All this within 5 minutes in the air. It landed in tall grass and there was ice on the propellers. Fortunately, no damage. Whew! The extra load on the motors due to ice build up on the blades overheated the motors and rapidly drained the battery.
Thanks for bringing this up to your viewers.

Same thing happened to my mini 3 pro, my drone was about 600m away from home point when I got the first “motor overload” warning. Luckily, I was able to bring it back safely at full throttle. This would have been a devastating loss since it is my replacement drone that I payed out of pocket due to a previous incident. In short, don’t risk it!

If you see this or any motor alarm in low temperature conditions, get the done back immediately and low as you can. Do not use RTH as it will potentially cause accent making it worse. Went from warning to fall from sky in 20 second's. I got lucky, landed in a soft field with no apparent damage

Being a former pilot, icing is well known. Flying my drone the fingers get "iced" when it's cold.....
Being low on battery, is sports mode the most efficient mode for distance versus battery usage?

  • @tomaszbudnik521
    @tomaszbudnik521 Před rokem

Aerodynamic is same for planes, drones or heli... This is why planes have de icing systems. In case of drone you could expect that centrifugal force will solve the problem but seems like not - I guess using on rotor blades sort of hydrophobic layer would help a lot. Guess even ordinary car wax could help already...

    Hello 👋
For the fog to appeared, you need to be in a No wind condition. So it’s a very stable air mass.
The layer close to the ground contains more moisture than the one on the upper side of the mass. As the altitude rise, the temperate degrees, a normal rule under, except in a temperature inversion situation but that’s an other subjects. So you will think by lowering the altitude you will be in some warmer temperature and hopefully out of freezing conditions. That’s a good idea … at first !
In a contrary if you go higher the temperature will go down and you will be even more into a freezing conditions where you do not want to be …. Maybe you do.
As you Clim you will get out zoner from the height moisture layers and even out of it, All that dépende of the thickness of the fog you are in, but no moisture situation is what you are looking for. It will not take raid off the problem but at the least it will not get worst.
The number 1 rule is to get out of visible moisture !
All fogs do not touche the ground , radiation fog does ! But that’s an other subjects too.
It is a very complex subject the formation and disparition of the fog. It is beautiful to witness because been so close to the ground, it makes it so well visible for us all to watch.
    Take care a be well.

Wish I would have known about this phenomenon before I took my drone out this AM. I never would have gone out to fly. It was foggy and about 21F (-6C) this morning after a good snowstorm yesterday, so I figured it'd be awesome to head up the canyon and film the river and all the fresh snow on the trees, paths and bridges. The flight was going great and I was only about 0.3mi (0.5km) from my drone in fairly dense fog. After only about 5-6 minutes of flight, I was getting ready to spin the drone back around to come back to me and it suddenly fell out of the sky into the snow! Fortunately, I was able to somewhat control it sideways so it didn't land in the river and it had a relatively soft landing into the fresh powder. I couldn't believe it when it happened!... Still can't, really. No warnings on the screen or nothing until the propellers stopped when it hit fell into the snow! But this totally makes sense if there was some icing of the propellers, which caused it to fly ineffectively and not generate enough lift.
Thankfully, I had just gotten my footage of the small waterfall before I had gained altitude to spin it back around to come back, because otherwise, it would have landed right in the river. I called DJI tech support after it happened thinking it may have been something defective with the drone for it to dive out of the sky like that, since I was operating under the correct temperature conditions and distances. I explained the conditions to the guy I spoke with on the phone, but he didn't mention this particular phenomenon and may not even be aware this can happen. He was able to pull my flight data and get a case entered for me to escalate it further. I suppose they'll review it and see if it's worth replacing if something's faulty with it. Fortunately, everything still seems to be perfect with the drone since it was a nice soft landing in the fluffy snow. Even though it was an awesome idea for some footage, I definitely won't be doing anything in fog and sub-freezing temperatures with the drone again! Hopefully my story can help some others avoid an issue too. However, it's likely they'll be like me and find this video when it's too late. Hopefully, they won't damage theirs too badly either! Thank you so much for your video and the explanation!!!

Looks like I'll be the first to mention that drone flying in fog is not legal (in the United States). Where's your 3 mile visibility and distance FROM clouds? None and zero. When I first obtained a drone, I flew straight up in a fog hoping to pop out on top for a glorious view; never found the top and nearly crashed the drone. Relatively thick ice had formed on the propeller blades in just a couple of minutes and not just on the leading edge; where it really matters is the upper side that creates low atmospheric pressure and thus also reduces temperature. That's where the lift-killing ice forms and changes the shape of the blade; it is no longer an "airfoil".
