Sena Freewire Tutorial & Review-Bluetooth Harley Boom Box-How to use?

  • Many of you know by now if you follow my articles, my CZcams Channel, and our weekly Podcast that there is still no wireless Bluetooth headset that pairs "directly" with the Harley-Davidson Boom!™ Box Infotainment System. I said "directly". That means that you can't turn on the "pairing" mode on your Bluetooth motorcycle headset and then do the same with the Boom Box and get them to pair. It simply won't work. The current Boom Box head units are the same today as they were in 2014 when they came out on project Rushmore Harley's. They simply weren't designed with a Bluetooth "headset profile", but only a "handsfree profile" to pair to things like your smartphone. Yes, that is a failure on the part of Harman Kardon, the maker of the Boom Box system for Harley.

    Sena realized the frustration of bikers and worked on a solution to fix the problem. And so......the Sena Freewire was born! It doesn't allow you to pair your wireless headset "directly" to the Boom Box, but instead is a module for getting your Sena brand wireless headset to work & function with the Boom Box. Yes, it is a workaround, but the best that I know of! We liked the Sena Freewire so much that we actually brought it to the Official Law Abiding Biker Store!
    Note: The infotainment system on the Honda Gold Wings face the same issue and there is a Freewire version for Goldwing riders too!
    Before the Sena Freewire existed, many just used a wired headset and plugged directly into the 7-Pin DIN communications port on their Harley. A wired headset is still a valid option and we sell them right in our store for half helmet, no helmet, full face, 3/4 helmet, and modular helmets. They work great and you get full functionality. Check out our #1 recommended wired headsets for Harley.
    For those that want to "cut the cord" and go wireless
    In a nutshell, the Sena Freewire gets ride of that pesky wire running from your helmet/head to the communications port. Aaaaah yes, freedom! Jump on and off your bike without plugging/unplugging!
    How it works
    The Sena Freewire plugs directly into the 7-Pin DIN port on your Harley and into the Freewire via a micro USB connection. Then you pair your Sena brand headset with the Freewire. The Boom Box transmits all audio going out of the 7-Pin into the Freewire, which then sends it to the your Sena wireless headset via Bluetooth 4.1 technology! And it works great!
    Add a Smartphone
    Now you can add your Smarthpone to the mix to stream music via Bluetooth. Make sure your phone is securely mounted to your Harley with one of our Biker Gripper Motorcycle Cell Phone Mounts. They are the sexiest, sleekest, strongest mounts on the market! Just pair your smartphone directly to your Boom Box and play your music! The music now streams to your Boom Box from your phone wirelessly. The music then goes out of the Boom Box and then out the 7-Pin direclty into your Freewire, which then sends it to your Sena headset wirelessly via Bluetooth.
    Note: You'll have to change your settings within the Boom Box to send audio out the 7-Pin port instead of to your speakers. See these procedures and more in our Harley Boom Box Tutorial Videos!
    Further, you can get a wireless Sena headset & an additional Freewire for your passenger to plug into the 7-Pin. Now you can use the CB and built Boom Box internal communications system. You can finally talk back and forth with your passenger wirelessly and listen to the same music.
    Note: In my testing, the Sena Freewire will not allow you to give voice commands to the onboard Boom Box system, such as "go to" or "play" a particular album/artist etc. A wired headset will allow such. I don't know if that will work with a future Freewire software updates?

    I purchased the FreeWire and the Sena 20/S from Harley and I can say that I was able to use all the functions that are available in the Boom Audio system including talking to GPS for directions, answering the phone, getting music from my iPhone, etc. From what I understand it will only work with the 20/S with Bluetooth 4.0 which is what Harley Davidson sells. I used this for a 6,600 mile trip out west earlier this month and the system was flawless and every function was available to me through the wireless FreeWire module!

It literally took me longer to watch your video than it did to install and pair everything and I suck at tech stuff. Nice job. I’ll find you on Facebook.

  • @jerrybrown66
    @jerrybrown66 Před 3 lety

    Appreciate the video. This is a good workaround and not have to replace your existing Sena headset with the HD and the WHIM. My method for avoiding the Freewire and the WHIM is:
    When wearing a full face helmet on long highway trips or cold weather, I bypass the GTS and connect my headset with my bar mounted iPhone via bluetooth with power from a spliced wired under the fairing and up my bars. Making phone calls works well. When using my sena, there's really no need to be connected to GTS. This method also allows me to use third party nav on my iPhone simultaneous with the GTS Nav without losing my planned GTS route when switching between Carplay and HD nav.
    If I go half-helmet (no headset) at non highway speeds in warm weather , then I connect my iPhone via Bluetooth to the GTS and listen through the fairing speakers. Sometimes I want to use Apple Carplay and have to plug my iPhone into the factory USB regardless of my helmet which renders the Sena headset useless which is ok because I'm wearing a half helmet with no Sena.
    Eventually I may give in to the WHIM and HD headset, but I'm holding off as long as I can.

    Excellent video as always. I do think I can solve your issue with phone calls and voice commands. I have one of the first units released for production as I was all over SENA so have had sometime to play.
    Understand I use a Smartphone, not a iPhone, however this should still work.It is actually pretty simple.
    I don't have either of the issues you mention, however the light bulb went of when you mentioned things "fighting" each other. You have to let your phone sync to the bikes radio BEFORE turning on or syncing the Freewire to the 20S. If not, the 20S thinks it has control while the radio, which also synced to the phone, thinks it has control. This is why it comes up on the screen but you do not hear anything.

    Ryan you rock. This is not the first time we have looked to LAB to sort things out for us. Information is complete and clear. Unfortunalty it doused interest in the product. We are looking for totally clean solution, as in "invisible". We have street glides w/o wired helmet connection to the Boom Box. Looking for wireless connection and were aware of the issue with mono only sound to anything other than an H-D tagged SENA unit. Still we were willing to look at the handlebar mounted SENA Free Wire unit, until you made it clear that we would also have to go farther back and install a hardwired DIN port for connection into the SENA head. additional to being unsightly, the hassle of having to unplug and store the SENA head and connection cable for security when parking is just a deal breaker.

    This gadget is really nice. I first saw this on a cycle gear catalog. I figured it was still not 100% compatible at the moment, so I will just continue to use my "wired" communications system. If I managed to win it, I would experiment with it as well. I am used to wires as we use similar types of communication on our military vehicle communications systems. Maybe in the future, they will have tapped into Harley's system or Harley will just give us what we want and at least provide the technology in their own re-branded Harley-Davidson helmets.

    I've been watching the evolution of the Freewire. A couple months ago I upgraded from SMH10 units to the 20s units. My use case includes a rider with me most of the time and both want control of our own phones. The last piece has always been shared listening to music but still having the ability to intercom on top of the music. The SMH10 could share music but the intercom cut it off. Riding with the music on the speakers and the SMH10 units between us fit our use case except at highway speeds my wife didn't like the radio so loud. I tested almost all of the "hacks" and nothing solved this issue easily. The closest was building an intercom piece that basically tricked the Senas into thinking it was a 3 way intercom call. But then the audio quality was not the best. For now we bought the 20s mounts with a 7pin din connector. We're wired for Boom audio but have our other functions still. The Freewire might allow us to not need the cable.

    As always Ryan a great video, but heres the kicker! HD needs to do one of two things imo. Either fix the boombox to pair with headsets or make a deal with Sena to make a 20s in Black and orange kinda like the freewire? With the HD brand on it. To hell with this wired system! I have owned a 16/17 Goldwing. I have owned a 16/17 Ultra. I now have a 19 Street Glide. I have used Sena20s with and without the Freewire. All of what is stated in the video is correct. However, the best way to integrate, in my opinion, from both a cost and feature set perspective so that you can answer and make phone calls, listen to music, listen to turn by turn and be notified of texts on the street glide is to use a usb adapter in the 12v outlet on the right side of the faring. Plug in a short usb cable between the 12v usb adapter and the phone. Install the free Sena app on your phone. Pair the phone with 20s SENA. DO NOT PAIR PHONE WITH BOOM. Now you have all the same functionality with the exception of being able to listen to the content of texts. Dump you music on a phone sim card, you will be able to answer incoming and make outgoing calls with the Sena App, use the WAZE app for your GPS and your good to go. Economical; actually almost zero cost - just the usb adapter and cable, feature rich and wireless.

    Ryan, you don't want to pair your Sena to your phone, if you are using the freeware. If you only pair your phone to the boom, everything works perfectly. You can make and accept calls, just as if you are plugged in. It works great! Try unpairing your phone to your Sena. Pair phone to the boom, the freeware to the Sena 20s and you are good to go!

    Thanks for the great video Ryan. I just bought a 2017 HD Streetglide Special last month and have since found your site, and purchased a couple video's (boom 2 install and detachable trunk) and appreciate the time and detail you guys put into these. I read about these freewire units here a couple weeks ago, and have been trying to research them because I was highly disgusted that 24k and couldn't connect a bluetooth headset to the infotainment sys. Do you know if the music quality to your sena headset speakers is in stereo via the freewire or is it mono. Guess that's one of the main reasons I might get it is to hear some music in my helmet at highway speeds. Thanks again for all you guys do!!!

Does the music sound respectable in your full face helmet speakers or is it tin canny mono sounding?
      The FreeWire features:• Support for onboard built-in CB radio communication• Wirelessly stream stereo audio to Sena Bluetooth headset• Support for internal communication between a rider and a passenger each using a FreeWire

    I thought there was an internal box for the Bluetooth SENA's. It is there another on other than this?

  • @epowell01
    @epowell01 Před 5 lety

    OK. So with this bought and being so great, how do I get rid of the echo of my own voice when communicating on anything other than intercom? Hearing many different versions. It's HD that has side tone enabled in radio (I have side tone off in Sena 20S), to other stupid ideas. With your many connections have you had this issue or heard of it. And or a resolve to it?

    Bought the 20s earlier this year to work with my phone while riding on my Slim and still being able to communicate with friends also using Bluetooth headsets. I moved onto a Street Glide a few months ago only to find the incompatibility issues with the Boom Box. Now to my question...... will the Freewire provide me with the capabilities you've shown here but still allow the headset to headset communication with other Bluetooth/wireless riders?

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  Před 7 lety

      Yes it will. You can use it with the boom box and still have the rider to rider and group functions.

    Ryan, it’s 2020 now, do you still think the Freewire is the way to go? I’ve got a 2015 Ultra Limited, so it’s already got the DIN connector, but no WHIM. I’ve got a Boom! Branded 20S EVO. I think, based on this video and several others, that this is going to be an easy solution. What say you?

  • @jsonny100

    Nice start to BT communication. Still have some bumps but well on its way. What about sound volume? Having a hearing deficit, I notice that Bluetooth lacks needed volume for me.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  Před 5 lety

      Not personally. However it’s the same as voice commands etc. Everything comes out the coms port & all goes back on. The Freewire is hooked to the come port.

    I just purchased a 2021 TGUC and I'm not very literate electronically.All I really want is to be untethered and listen to my boom box channels and to hear GPS commands.With the FREEWIRE,do I have to pair with an Android or other for just the functions I mentioned?

      We haven't tested a SRL yet, but the freewire will work it.

    Ryan that's a great work around but when you unpair the phone from the Sena 20s you lose the ability to use the Sena app on your phone. It may not be a big deal once you set the 20s up but changes on the fly are out.

    Still not sure which is better the Harley hard wired set or the Free-wire, Riding with another rider for communicate, it seems like it would be good, but solo riding if the wire to the bike, it sounds like you get more functionality.

    Ryan, I have the Freewire and I'm considering going to the WHIM, although I really don't want to do that and have to buy those HD headsets. My frustration with the Freewire is, every time I start the bike, I have to remember to go into the bluetooth setting on my iPhone and disconnect the phone from the 20s. See, my phone automatically connects to the 20s because I also use the 20s on a Goldwing. Can't bluetooth the phone to the Wing like I do on my Limited. Any thoughts on this or am I just stuck?

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  Před 6 lety

      I think you are stuck. I feel you frustration, but I'd stick with the Sena in my humble opinion.

    I did that and I can hear the music and phone calls. But the microphone isn't working so I can give voice commands or talk on the phone. I can place call manually but they cannot hear me... Been a real project.
