      At some point in their lives the homeless caused the condition they're in today and giving them something they haven't earned won't help. As to veterans, being one shouldn't entitle them to anything. They were trained and paid for their service and were offered educational opportunities and medical benefits. Technically we're all homeless and if you think not just quit paying taxes on what you think you own!!

    This brought tears to my eyes. We need more of this in the world especially with covid times happening. Some of the kindest most loving people I know have faced homelessness at some point in their lives. This would have made their times on the street so much more comfortable and dignifying. It's hard to look for jobs when you're in a shelter because of their hours. They essentially force them to hop from place to place never truly relaxing. The police will get called on them if they stay in one place for long. They're forced to shower at gyms and pools. It's ridiculous. This is a much better solution for them until they get back on their feet.

    Also, Homes built with communal areas could be used in high rent places to conserve space and make housing affordable. This idea seems functional not just for the homeless but general people who want to save money on rent.

    • @orangeradishneo
      @orangeradishneo Před 4 lety +13

      Greed, and its imaginary value. A house can go up in cost for no reason other than whether or not it's a seller's market (I.e theres more demand for housing than there is available so realtors advise homeowners to get as much as possible) which continues the cycle of raising the "value".
      Let's say you buy a house at 300k. You live in it for a year and do nothing to improve the house, but it's in as good of a condition as you bought it in. It's a seller's market so you're advised to put it on the market at $350k, then a bidding war starts and it goes up to $400k. You're now profiting $100k (or so, minus realtor fees) on a house you did NOTHING to. You did nothing to earn that money besides sell at the right time. Now, the next family who bought it at $400k are looking to sell for at LEAST that (if sold at the right time). Now a house has gone from $300k to $400k (cost, not value).
      This is why I dont want to buy a house. It's an investment you can lose a lot of money on if you ever want/have to move. Sure, paying a mortgage is cheaper than rent most often, but homeowners also have to maintain the home, and save some income to be able to spend back in the home if necessary.
      Some landlords are really greedy, they'll do the bare minimum work but charge the maximum possible, which is another issue.

      WOW, the extremely ignorant responses you're getting to your comment is just disgusting. It's incredibly ablest, classiest and idiotic to presume that a homeless problem is going to fix itself from the sorts of holier than thou empathy lacking individuals who are more concerned about what's in your pocket as a means of judging someone then who they are. There's even a creepy eugenics argument coming from GoldenState, Careful Golden your Nazi is showing. I guess in their ideal society the sick, the unwell and the mentally ill get shot to the waste side. (Oh wait we live here already!) You may not want to LOOK at the problem of homelessness and think that there's a problem with your society for there to be THAT MANY on the street but that's on you and THOSE views are one of the reasons the Covid 19 is going to get WORSE.
      Anyways Star Wolf, yeah it's nice that they have this but it's not enough and not a permanent fix and with guys like these continuing the already FAILED ARGUMENT of presuming a homeless person who doesn't have access to food, water, entertainment or any community, Heck, maxi pads for the women, soap. ANYTHING. Is going to go get a job, in what is often a failing economy where minimum wage usually isn't enough while not having a place to clean their fucking bodies or get clothes. Yeah great idea guys, that'll stop the homeless problem.

      Star Wolf I agree. The NIMBY people have kept social housing out of Cali for decades. Hey, I've worked for NYCDOB as well as the Corcoran group.. many of those "abandoned" buildings are not abandoned at all, but owned by multi millionaires, many of them foreign developers. They want the land, not the buildings itself. They just let it sit & collect capital while the rest of the neighborhood goes up in value via gentrification, then they sell for a major profit, if they sell at all. Sometimes they turn it into luxury condos (they were just waiting for the neighborhood to "whiten up" a bit so there'd be less pushback about building a million $ condo across the street from the projects. 😒) Welcome to NYC.

    I've had this idea for about 20 years, so amazed someone finally started doing it, we need this to go worldwide. If we can all volunteer our time doing this, we can end poverty and significantly reduce inequality.

    • @gtw4546
      @gtw4546 Před 3 lety +11

      Likewise!
      The next step would be tiny houses (250-400 sf) that contain a small bathroom and kitchen and would be open to people ready to leave the bridge housing and integrate with others who could benefit from tiny houses - elderly, young people just starting out like college grads, people new to the area, women leaving domestic violence, etc. It would be especially nice if there were an option to either rent or buy for those who want to remain in the community.
      In the 1950s, the average home was under 1000 sf. Even though families have gotten smaller, homes have gotten much bigger. There is no reason that one person needs that much space and prices make homeownership impossible for far too many. Smaller homes would address multiple problems.

      "Volunteer" is actually the issue. You won't get far at all with that mentality. No one is going to simply do all the work for free. The problem is, when the cities outsource to companies to get the work done, these sleezy companies up the costs of everything in order to make max profit. That needs to be regulated. Stop allowing these companies to do this.

No one is perfect, but people on both sides of politics have come together. Live awhile, and you will see. No party is perfect, or right but it's what we have, and it seems pretty alright compared to the rest of the world. This should be a model replicated in other cities in the Bay Area to help the homeless be in safe and clean space to help get back on their feet. To give them back a sense of dignity. The community structure, coupled with the social services available to them is critical in their transition back to permanent housing. Amazing work San Jose!

I designed a mobile shower unit for homeless people and another architecture professor said “don’t focus on the homeless, there’s not that many of them anyways”. Another professor got upset with me when I portrayed families in my design projects, told me we need to challenge the traditional family unit.
