- Overview of a Ford 240 6 cylinder engine, also known as a straight 6 or inline 6. I will discuss my favorite part of working on it and the work that has been done. From there you will be able to see the engine from various angles and also see the engine running.
Kind of nice to see a 240 that hasn't had it's head stripped off. You don't see that many of those anymore.
Much of this truck is original which is nice.
Brings a tear to my eye . . .
I've got a 65 LWB with the original 240 but its not currently running. This inspires me to get it going again.
Just start with one thing and then go on to the next. Luckily, this is a very easy engine to work on!
Wow, that is one beautiful truck! In a world of planned obsolescence, I love the simplicity of these inline 6 engines as you showed in the video. That was awesome how you climbed right in! It is a shame that car companies nowadays don't prioritize building the best vehicle they possibly can. Anyways, take care and enjoy the weekend! Peace
Thanks for the comment. For a while my neighbor was a bit confused when she looked over and saw me standing in the truck while I worked on it.

Nicely done, respect. Love the honesty and simplicity of the old trucks.
I did enjoy the simplicity of this truck. The engine was easy to work on and the interior was basic, but functinal.
I wish I had a dollar for every time I watched my dad standing up in the engine bay of an ol' Ford.... Brings back many memories!
Did he enjoy working on it? My dad was always working on our truck, but it was because it kept breaking down.
@@chrisroy2950 I believe he did since he was a mechanic. He was the local Ford and carburetor guru in our area and he sincerely enjoyed helping people.
God how I miss the sound of the 240-cid in my old 1967 Ford F-100
I dropped a 300 six into a 1974 LTD. Some fella tried to swap in a 350 smallblock and failed miserably, leaving behind these huge chunks of C channel sticking out from the frame where the engine perches were supposed to be on the 350. I never cut them out, and it turns out that I can sit on the fender and rest my feet on these old 350 mounts. It also makes a convenient grounding point. Sitting under the hood really beats standing in the rain any day.
Nice truck. I maintain & drive a '65 F100 2WD. Had the 240 for 31 yrs. Made 169,000 miles. Was very strict on the 3,000 mile oil/filter changes. Never once went past the 3,000 mile limit on oil/filter changes. The last 9,000 +/- miles...was going thru too much oil.
Had it removed. Replaced it with a 300. Everything fit up from the 240 to the 300.
I put the EFI exh mnflds on the 240. What a difference. Not enough to go with another 240.
Now the 300 benefits in the "breathing" dept too.
I am so pleased with the 20 more h.p. I still use the 1V carb & oil bath air filter.
I look forward to more yrs of trouble free driving (as long as I maintain it).
The 1965 is a nice truck. While I liked the 240, it felt underpowered many times. I imagine that the extra 20hp did make a big difference. Glad you are still enjoying your truck!
What difference in miliaege between the 240 and 300
There is a little less mileage with the 300. I gladly give that up for the difference in power.
The big six is the best engine ever.
Looks almost like my truck. A 300 6cyl with a C6 auto runs mine. Mine is a swb, has alot of torque. I really like these trucks, very dependable. You've got a goldmine.
Thanks for the comment. I think a shortbox would be a really neat truck.
These engines my favorite as well! Easy to work on, bare bones simplicity.
Right on! It was a great engine to work on.
Nice truck. Love those old straight 6s
The straight 6 was really fun to work on.
You makes some nice clear vids. Surprised you have so few subscribers. I love these kinds of vids. I'm putting a 300 I6 into my 09 JKU. I sub'd.
I am actually surprised people like the videos : )
The Ford straight 6 is a very nice engine to work on and also known for reliability. Good luck on the project.
Nice truck and engine, I have a 84 e150 with the 351w HO but it's very tired and I have to replace it and I'm leaning towards a 300 I6 .
Nice video
One thing nice, is that if you do decide to do the work yourself, it is fairly straightforward. I do like the I6 as it is pretty easy to take apart.
My 66 custom cab short bed has the 240 3 speed on the tree. I love the power of the little 6. Mine does have a 9” with 3:89 gears so it hums pretty good after 60 mph.
A shortbed would be a nice truck. While this goes pretty good at 60, it got a bit challenging at 70.
sweet truck
Thanks for sharing.... Great truck
That is one good looking, well kept ford pick up!
Thanks. I appreciate the comment!
Love your truck. Most of my fleet of hot rods use 240 / 300 engines. Great engine for a buildup.
It was a perfect engine for me to learn on.
My 66 240 sounds exactly like yours. I have everything to swap it out for a 390 and I’ll probably get to it sometime the fall. I bought a 360 and found a 390 crank and a set of 390-428 rods. I bought a edelbrock 390 performer intake and a comp cams complete cam kit with everything. The engine came with the complete flywheel and clutch and bell housing and 3 speed transmission which is the same one behind the 240 and with the 9” heavy duty rear end with 3:89 gears should be able to pull anything.
That truck is really going to be nice when done!
Sweet! Oh how I wish I had one of these!
Beautiful truck I've got a 65 ford f100 with a 240 6 with a c4 automatic 3spd no overdrive it's the best truck I've ever had working on them is so fun and easy and there durable little motors I prefer it to anything new out there
Couldn't agree more!
#1 reason for liking the straight 6 is the same reason I have too
My dad loved those old straight six's
I find that people really love those old six cylinders.
Beautiful truck.
Thanks for the comment! These were fun colors back then.
Just looked through my old Ford stuff this afternoon. I had more before I moved. I feel badly about getting rid of some like I did but I figured how many 302 blocks do I really need and how many big six blocks do I really need? I kept a F600 forged crank and the 240 head. I thought I traded the 240 rods for 300 rods years ago when I built a swap in engine for an 81 Ford. I used the 240 block and the 81 300 head. But I just measured the rods and they're 240 rods. I guess I could use the 300 block with the forged crank the 240 head.. find some 292 Chevy billet rods..or not.. I'd have to machine the crank a little but it's doable. I used to know the big six stuff better than V8 stuff. Now I've forgotten most of it. I prefer the inline for ease of service but I don't want a factory carbed 6. I've got an economaster 450 mechanical secondary carb. I bet that was for a 6 with an offenhauser. I don't think I'd want it for that.. everyone makes better 6 cams, or did. If you want to spend the big bucks you can even have a roller cam made. Mobil Delvac 1300 and Delo are both SN rated. Delvac has more ZDDP. Delo has more boron. Oil isn't a problem for flat cams. Seems like Mystik has a HD oil that's good too. Just thinking. I'd still rather have a 351 but if I get rid of the overdrive...I don't like the EFI 6. The head was 68cc like the 240 head but they're known to crack. The older stuff never did.
Beautiful color truck
Thanks. When I first painted it blue and wimbeldon white I was pretty nervous as to how it looked. However, once I put the tires, chrome and accessories on, it really turned out nice.
Just started on one. Got it going but not as smooth as yours. Job Well done!
This truck was not that smooth when I first started on it. There was a lot of ticking and it ran pretty rough. With some research and time, you'll be able to get yours running smooth also.
I have a 67 Ford Econoline cargo or panel van if you will with the same motor you did a fine job on yours very nice work but the 240 and the 300 are not exactly identical block the 300 has more bore stroke Etc but basically the same. Good job
Your F-100 is very pretty
It’s lovely, my fav year. By chance did you buy it from unique classic cars?
I actually sold it through Unique Classic Cars. They are about 1 hour from me in Mankato.
Love the truck. Nice and simple. What color is that?
The color is Frost Turquoise on the top and Wimbeldon White on the botton.
Needing some help with a friend of mines truck. Could you do a video on setting points, and timing please.
I ended up selling the truck. The timing was pretty easy, and I think the points were also.
What oil do you use for oil change? And how many quarts? Thanks in advance!
I used Shell Rotella oil and I think it was 15w-40. Some internet postings say if you use regular oil your engine will blow up and some said that if you used Rotella your engine would blow up. But since more said you would have issues with regular oil, I went with Rotella.
Where is the oil drain plug location?
I don't exactly remember, but it is very obvious once you are under the truck.
how fast could you drive steadily on the highway without pushing the engine?
I could about 60mph for an hour or so, but that was about it.
@@chrisroy2950 thanks, i just bought a 1966 f100 w same engine. three on tree.
yep, 60 is it
Is your truck an automatic or manual?
Manual
We have the same name
That's funny. Did people use to pronounce your name the what the French say it? People said that all the time when Patrick Roy, the hockey player was popular.
