The Ford 300 cubic inch straight six is long believed to be one of the most durable engines ever made. But is it really? In this video we push the limits on our 1991 Ford F-150 to see just how reliable the F-150 is. Can it survive a day of rigorous work on the farm or is the $900 Ford going to end in disaster? And just for kicks, we brought along a 1994 Dodge Ram cummins for a quick tug of war!

Excellent video!!!!! TFL IS #1 !!!!!
This was a fun one.
I wanna see this old Chevy he's had over the years lol
Like everyone else has said new radiator, rear locke,r and better tires she'd be a champ
+1 on the rear locker. I've got a 2wd F-250 that I've been debating putting a locker in for a while now.
@@Kcducttaper1 doitdoitdoitdoit!
@@Kcducttaper1 my 2014 f150 has the electronic locker and 4x4. The locker helps so much that I hardly ever use 4x4
New brakes too
@@anthonymartinez4780 its true, my uncle told me one time “a 4x4 without a locker is basically a 2wd, if you getting stuck in your 2wd, put you a locking rear en on there”
During "cash-for-clunkers", dealers were supposed to drain the oil and kill the engine of any vehicle they took on a trade. Many old 300s were traded in under the hood of various cars. A lot of dealers were having difficulty killing them. Simply draining the oil wasn't enough. Some were pouring sand and rocks into the crank but the 300s just kept going. I know several dealers that just stopped trying. In my opinion, the 300 is in the top 3 engines that Ford has ever made.
The other two?
@@panthiawhelan3565 The 351 Cleveland and the old pushrod 302. The 351 Windsor and the 460 round out my top 5.
I worked for a Toyota dealer at the time of the cash for clunkers. The way you were supposed to do it was to drain the oil and put in a solution that was basically liquid glass. Most engines wouldn’t make it very long at idle before locking up solid. We took in a 300, had to put a brick on the pedal and it ran for the most part of an hour, stalled, restarted and ran for a while longer and repeat a couple of times. I think it finally just lost compression, never actually seized.
That cash for klunkers kills many an epic vehicle after it one i used to be able to find (audi 5000/100 with the turbo 5cy and manual trans) went basically extinct
She just needed more power
Traction is what most of their issues were
yup, slap some meaty off road tires on that puppy and she'll go...
And also that it's a ford
@N. Sidor , I beg to differ. My daily driver is 1959 Chevy panel truck with a 235 straight six and a granny four speed and it will out pull and out work that Ford all day long and get better mileage doing so.
@N. Sidor , I've owned my truck for over 35 years and it has had to work hard the whole time I've owned it. I use it every day to pull a 16 foot trailer loaded with lawn equipment. I've moved two trailer houses with it, one a 60 footer. It has also towed a lot of Ford's that were unable to make it under their own power. I also use it to haul firewood in the winter. My truck is 60 years old and has well over a million miles on it. I have not yet seen a Ford to match that. I'm glad that you are happy with your Ford, and I hope it continues to give you good service, but let's see if it is still going when it's 60 years old.
New tires brakes and a basic tune up this truck would be perfect.
Coverage on this guy's property is great.. what a playground and a great guy
I’m not even a ford fan but...I want to see more of that old ford 💪💪..
I've owned several Fords over the years with that engine and it truly does deserve it's reputation for toughness. Back the 70s when the Big three American auto companies all offered a pickup with a big inline six,it really didn't matter which brand you chose because all of the six cylinder trucks were durable as hell and lasted a long time.
The real beauty of the 300 Ford was that it would run even if 2 or more plugs were fouled and the oil was neglected. Drove one in HS and never put any money in it other than gas. A buddy owned a junk yard and we were Chevy guys but ford was just that cheap. Kept it until a rusted 69 Dart came along that we rebuilt with bondo and newspaper. We were Road Kill life 35 years ago.
I own a 1986 f150 with a 300 and a 4 speed. Drove it home about 20 miles after doing a tune up when it suddenly died in my driveway... didnt get the spark plugs tight enough and 2 of them were loose... still did 80 on the freeway.
Had a ‘91 F150 and was having a bad misfire issue. Upon trying to troubleshoot I accidentally swapped 2 plug wires. Drove it like that for a few hundred miles. Even towed a 10’ trailer with a golf cart on it on the highway at 60 mph in 5th gear, while running on 4 cylinders!! Best motor Ford ever made!!!!
Same drove the piss out of it
@@austinclifford4511 My first truck was 86 Ford 150 I6 Back in high-school it was known as the farm truck. I own 2 2500 CUMMINS now. All 3 great trucks
My Dad filled my new 91 F150 300 with Diesel. It clattered like a Diesel, every chance I got I added a gallon or 2 of Gas. It finally burned it out and run like new with no problems. Crazy
I once heard about a logger in my area who had an old Ford with the 300 6 cylinder. The truck had cooling issues that he decided not to fix so he would run it all day in the woods until the engine would seize then leave it. The next day he would fire it back up and do it again. Went at least a year like that. I believe the engine did eventually give up but I guess it’s understandable when it was heat seized on a daily basis for a year.
😅🤣😂 I always find it hilarious when people try to criticize certain car manufacturers but they always neglect to include details about proper maintenance of the vehicle, a lot of people treat their vehicles like trash and then whine when it breaks whereas when you take care of it, it pretty much keeps rolling
I had a 95 f150 with the 30o and a 5spd the radiator blew and It seized on the highway so I sold it to a junkyard just to see them driving it around 3 days later, they said after a cold night it unseozed and they just stick a radiator in it and used it around the yard. FML I loved that truck
The other Ford engine you can’t kill is the 4.6 V-8 in the Crown Vics.
I had like the first year 4.6 in mine...it sat for 2 years before I bought it. It started right up and made zero noise
Yep that engine is legendary for reliability.
I have a f150 with that 2v 4.6l just passed 200k still going strong.
@@tp2959 there's fleets of Lincoln Town cars with over 700K on that engine. Several 4.6's have been featured with 1 million miles on them
TFL should totally do a miniseries with a Crown Vic!
"this just proves that beds are held on by too many bolts" is probably my favorite quote
Get some used off road tires, a radiator and just beat the crap out of it. Check the oil too. Lol
And weld the rear end up so it's a locker
I'm not a Ford guy but the ford had those wimpy little street tires vs. the Dodge with big all terrain or muds NOT A FAIR MATCH UP at least for traction.
Even the engines, a inline 6 gas versus a Cummins
i have a 90 f150 and i have all tertains and she got great grip
That and the dodge was 4wd and weighed alot more
I love the Ford's. But no denying that diesel has a lot more power
And it was in 4wd when they had weight in the back lol. That i6 definitely pulled it so they had to put the dodge in 4
if had some better tires it would do worlds better in the dirt.
You stole Nogla’s head! Lol
Lol
My dad has a 72 with a straight six and a three on the tree. That thing is a freakin tractor.
There’s a good chance that was a 240 . I found most 3 on the tree trucks was f100s and them was the 240. I actually liked the 240 over the 300. The 1972 was my favorite ford truck year. And still is.
FIX IT give it some new tires and a new radiator that would be great truck
meh.. Needs to be a manual 4x4.. otherwise its just a junker that's not good for much. Maybe a highway commute if you don't have anything else.
calholli hell just look at what it did here with bald tires and an open diff. If it had an lsd and some half decent all terrains it would be a solid work truck
@@noahchiasson7809 Yeah.. I mean, it has its uses. So does my old 1948 2n Tractor; but its only so useful. I don't drive automatics, they love to break.... give me a 4x4 or I'll walk. lol
If it's a farm truck that won't go on road again, weld the diff, get good tires and run it into the ground.
302 and a 6 cylinder are the best Ford engine
Watching city boys playing on a farm is so funny
Buddy lives on a yak farm, what about that makes him a city boy😂
Jeffery Christian I was talking about the tfl kids lol. David is definitely no city boy
Right
That's why I can't watch TFL, it's pure cringe. They aren't truck guys at ALL
Beardedcap I dunno, we all have/had trucks! It’s all we can talk about at our lunches!
Oh look! A Ford with a I6 doing things Chevys can only dream of.
The factory torque rating dont do justice..its the best work truck combo the 5spd w granny low or the a40de.. and there rather easy to work on / tune up when needed
@@jdubskiwright2380 I'll take the manual!
@@MisterMikeTexas it is nice be able to hold the gear u want. And less likely to get stolen these days
What was it doing that every other old truck can't

There is nothing more fun that an old truck with nothing left to lose. This vid was awesome. Always happy to see vehicle shenanigans!
"I've been a Chevy guy my whole life" nobody's perfect.
Some people need to see how the rest of the country lives.....
That nobody’s perfect line certainly applies to ford guys too!... ESPECIALLY Ford guys! Lol
@@natelloyd6312 you sound like a TFL employee.
Charles Scorpiniti I don’t know what TFL is! Lol
I would have been a full chevy guy but I found a ford truck with a price I couldn't past up so its not always easy to find a Chevy truck reliable for daily use and something to use around the farm
Back in the day my dad’s friend had an early 90’s F150 reg cab 2wd with the 300 6 & granny gear manual. He did construction work and always pulled a ridiculously heavy dump trailer…that thing was always overloaded and it never missed a beat!! His only complaint was the fuel mileage was horrible, even unloaded.
Literally, the greatest video TFL has ever done! This reminds me of playing around with the neighbors on the farm when I was a teenager. Just some friends having fun with old beaters.
Love episodes like this. No reviews or anything. Just a bunch a friends having good clean fun :)
It’s a review silly..
Have 1976 in line 6/3 00 that has over 450,000 mi on it still runs.
This was a great video. Looks like a fun time
My 1990 f150 inline 6 is my first truck. I can’t believe how amazing it is.
My dad had a 300 i6 he bought with 300k on it, between him and my sisters BF who he sold it to, it ended up with over 500k on it, it took a head on collision to kill the truck though it was still running with half the front end crushed in but unable to be driven
My grandfather has five trucks and 3 of them have the 300 straight 6 And he loves them
Reminds me of my uncles f350 with the 7.3 powerstroke. Had it from new in 1994. It was t-boned with 500k on the original engine. Since that truck he has own 6 7.3 powerstrokes.
I'm a gm guy like David but seeing the ole dodge and Ford put in some work reminds me when trucks were trucks, and not luxury vehicles.those two trucks could give there younger versions a run for there money
You didn’t really test the 4.9 durability. Not going to lie, I love my 4.9 L6. Mine had a NP435 transmission, NP208, 3.53:1 limited slip. You can kill them if your intent on it! These engines are used in remote areas for power generation, air compressors, aircraft tug’s and countless UPS trucks.
yea, killed mine ina '78 witha np206... no oil ruins things real bad :L (Father had sympathy and now is EFI'd even!)
ive herd of people draining all the oil out, then filling the intake with sand and them still putting up a fight
I remember watching this on tv at some point in my life. They cranked the engine to WOT, drained the oil and water. The started but soda, eggs, sand, metal shavings etc.. It might have been part of a slick 50 advertisement when they first came out in the 80’s. I’m really stretching my memories. I think it might have been on “Shade Tree Mechanic” that came on the TNN station, ole Sam and Dave! Was the ones that got me into turning wrenches for fun.
I had an 84 that was neglected and beat on for years. That motor was still spinning the tires when i drove it to my brother's house for him to use as a parts truck on a project he had. The 300 outlasted the body and several transmissions.
That was a awesome video lol! We need more videos like this, keep up the good work guys!
Of course fix it and throw a set of cheap offroad tires on the rear too.
And probably weld the diff.
David needs to be a permanent member of the team!
Nice man, nice truck and fantastic classic series!!!!
I owned a 1986 f150 in high school. Straight 6 300 with a 4-speed. It had two hundred eleven thousand miles on it when I bought it. I sold it to my cousin and he still running it till this day with over 560,000 miles on it. The straight 6 300 is the best motor Ford ever made in my opinion.

I love that y’all include David in a lot of videos, he is a really great guy! If y’all haven’t y’all should make David a new member of TFL! That straight 6 is a beast and I wish Ford was still making it!
One of your best efforts, every property needs an old reliable ,bog standard truck, part of our Murcan culture!

It's 18 minutes
TFL boys are definitely screw balls. They tried to climb a hill with a 2nd gen Ram and did not figure out how to get it into 4 wheel low. Those city boys only knew the twist knob newer style.

I'd like to see more of that truck. I think with a radiator and some good tires it will really surprise you for what it can actually do.
My dad had an 85 single cab with the manual and an 8’ bed. When Ford went ecoboost, they should have went turbo i6. For a company that loves nostalgia, they really missed an opportunity there.
Love watching these vids with you guys, the farmer seemed so happy too!
Keep it up
I have a long history at Ford and during the cash for clunkers most cars and trucks wouldn't last 20 mins after the liquid glass treatment to seize the engine to make the vehicle scrap. We had 3 4.9L 300ci f150's require up to 3 treatments. We had 1 run for 6 hours with a brick on the pedal after treatment and would not die.. Such a understressed engine that is built to rival a diesel! Good work TFL!
Throw some Ko2s, a new radiator and a Detroit locker in the rear and itll work much better off road. Would love to see more, oh and fully bolt down the bed.
I had an 88' with the 300. Sat on 35s and a 10" lift. Loved that truck. Slow as hell but would go anywhere.
Keep these kind of videos going! So much fun to watch! Still reminds me of The Grand Tour! Love it!

So I’ve had a ford 300 six in my pickup since I bought it 8 years ago, it was my first truck back in high school, it took a ton of abuse, mudding all the time, burnouts, racing, all kinds of shenanigans. It’s got 368,000 km on the clock and still pushes 40 psi oil pressure running the highway. It was recently stolen and returned, overheated so bad it dumped two gallons of coolant. It still runs great after that. I am at this point convinced that the old 300 is indestructible and immortal and will never die 😝
I've a 78 Econoline, 300 six, three on the tree... over 375,000 miles, still runs great.
I did replace the trans this year, been though 3 clutches, 5 batteries, one water pump and 2 alternators, 3 solenoids, one regulator and one ignition module.
I inherited it in '91, my Uncle bought it new, only put 5600 miles on it before he parked it because his vision went from a lifetime of smoking Kents.
It sat for 8 years before i took it it on. Amazingly enough, it started, old battery, gas and all.
I drove it about 40 miles to where I lived. I took the carb out, it was full of disgusting gleeb. I have no idea how I drove those 40 miles.
This van has served me so well. I was even gainfully homeless, lived in it after a bunch of carpentry to make it home, for 2 years.
Parts are available, and cheap. New muffler, $28. For my Subaru, $150... same store. It is so easy to work on. It loves nothing more than to cruise down the interstate...
Great vid. Wish it was a 4x4
I’ld like to see if it could handle the Ike gauntlet myself
I believe it would but slowly..all the powers down low ya kno
After all that punishment I believe that old ford deserves a decent rebuild and you guys could do a second auction when you’re done. There’s nothing wrong with more charity! I’m subscribed to all of the TFL channels. Keep up the amazing content! You have to have these in a manual 4x4 and its capable. I have a 2002 7.3 with the 6spd manual and 4x4... Its basically a tractor; and its awesome.
I'd say a manual is minimal. I've got a 96 300 5 speed 2wd, and I work it fairly hard for being my daily driver. Think my heaviest load that was actually measured so far was around 22** lbs of scrap steel to the dump, and it wasn't working too hard, just maybe a little harder to stop without trailer breaks 😅😅😅
@@dustinhaynes2617 I have a 95 300 straight 6 with a 5sp 4x4 and the heaviest I've hauled was about 65xx so far. My buddy's 2003 mustang gt broke down so I had to haul that with a full size trailer and my truck didn't care the entire time.
@@quickster48 I have an 89 5 speed rwd, easily pulled a 1990 f150 4x4 with a long bed full of junk and a spare transmission, that I picked up for parts on a 2 hour drive, including hilly dirt roads through farm country. Total weight of the trailer and truck came out around 7-8k pounds. These trucks never give up
would love to see some older truck like some 70s fords those were alot more mechanical and durable then the 80s and 90s
And today
Had a 1987 300 6 4 speed I used for construction. Put 600,000 milies on it. It went through 2 rear ends from hauling big loads of plywood and sheet rock, the motor and transmission never had any issues. I bought a 1996 4x4 with the 300 6 and sold the 87, it ran to 900,000. I just got rid of the 1996 two years ago and I still see it driving around town. They are the best American motor ever made.Torque monsters too.

What a waste of a good truck.! You don't put a Chevy were you put a Ford cause you know the Chevy can't handle the workload.!
