Nice!! If taken care of, that 300 straight 6 will outlast the body of the truck!! LOTS of them out there with over 300,000 miles, and a few well over 400,000. I’ve owned 2 of them. The last one had over 267,000 miles when I replaced the oil pan(stripped out over sized oil drain bolt from so many oil changes). With the oil pan off, I shined a flashlight to check the cylinder walls. You could still see the factory crosshatch!! These are GREAT motors!!

Piece of cake, 89 F250, 300k miles, gooseneck trailer 2001, 26.5k pounds over the scales, coast to coast on I80, would only do 52 with the ac off and 51 with the ac on (flats) but uphill it was a little slower, 100% power for a week running long days. never missed a beat. My only historical issues are tearing/crushing the fluid filled motor mounts so I have installed a chain on each side down to the engine cradle to limit movement, problem solved.

My 1993 f150 had a 4.9L under the hood 5 speed on the floor, 3.55 axle. It pulled a 9k camper in Ohio a few years back for my brother and I kept it in 4th gear all the way. Never went over 55mph because I didn't need to. The hardest clime I had was jumping on the free way in Niles from 46 to 82 had to climb it in 2nd and when I got the top grabbed 3rd. There not fast engines but if you gear it right with the right transmission set up. Im sure it'll pull a house down. I ended up getting 2 91's 1 f250 1 f150 both 4.9s

1992 f150 with the 4.9 and aode I’m guessing, pulled both a 74 F100 360 shortbed and then after a 96 F350 crew cab with the big utility box and 460 96 miles in Oklahoma each trip. Same deal, big hills it would get there in 2nd gear 40 mph but not struggling, just working. I was surprised the truck seemed to run better in this order, F350, F100, empty. Lol.

Yea I have pulled a bobcat with this one as well and I definitely believe that the manual trans with this engine is the best. it gives you way more control when towing heavy .. the automatic lags a bit in downshifting and causes you to lose speed but it still does the job.

This guy is on point with all this. Trucks can tow a hell of a lot more then modern "science" says they can.
    I tow 9000lb trailers with my 92 toyota 4x4 2.4l 22r
It climbs mountain passes at 35-40mph turning the engine at 3600rpm while getting no less then 14mpg
It's properly set up for this and the w series transmissions have a very usable 3rd gear. This engine competes with the small block lines in torque being applied to the axle shafts.
22r w/ cam, 300cfm progressive carb, header, 9.5:1, oversized valves. 4.88s in the axles, 31" m55s, and upgraded cooling system. Toyota leafs are fully wrapped at perches which is a peace of mind thing for me. All and all, Nothing to serious.
I'd estimate 160ft/lbs at the crank
160x1.41x4.88=1100ft/lbs of theoretical torque being delivered.
It's all about.hearing and I can't justify losing the fuel economy and ease of maintenance for more speed or comfort.

    • @adamm1998
      @adamm1998 Před 2 lety +2

My girl has a 84 ford 300 and when we use that for towing it doesn't handle it any better but the extra power is definitely nice, the fuel consumption isn't as good and if you don't want it to be horrible you have to go slower then the Toyota.
Ford 300 and the Toyota 22r are probably 2 of the best gas engines ever produced. They still have massive aftermarket support and throw down hard when you ask it of them.

@@Jay4.9OBSESSION A 12v Cummins isn't a powerful engine, it's a medium duty industrial engine. I had F650 in my fleet that had a 5.9 full loaded at 26k it struggled with the hills and passes here in Washington, but once it got into a good gear it wouldn't stop pulling at 40mph no matter how much we loaded it.
In light duty trucks it's not any better since it's missing a 10 speed and geared for daily driving.
The big difference is I wouldn't use a 22r to pull heavy loads everyday or for 12hrs at a time without rebuilding the engine every year.
A 6bt I wouldn't have to shut off except to change the oil.

Mine is slow and 4 speed auto seems to be forgetting about it's job sometimes. I don't know much about those trucks I bought it because I heard it's a reliable truck and it is but it is also slow... Maybe it's the gears but all I can do is 50. I thought 4.10 gears were only available in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks? I know 3.55, 3.08, and even 2.73 gears were available. The lower the number, the better the gas mileage on the highway. The higher number the better for towing. I had a ‘94 F150 with the straight 6, 5 speed manual, and 3.08 gears that would get 20 mpg empty on the highway.
