Many people tend to forget that Michael was running second behind Senna during that ill-fated San Marino GP, and that Michael witnessed the accident with his own eyes. Plus the fact that Mika was also on the podium for that race makes this situation a whole lot, I don’t know the word but its similar to ironic.
No doubt Schumacher is emotional about equaling Ayrton’s record but also equally sad knowing if he had lived he very well may have still been racing with all 3 of these gents in 2000. Very sad.
Schumacher explained his state of mind in this moment this in his Biography. It was 3 things that contributed to this. The first was that he had learned the morning before the race that an old friend of his had had a heart attack. The second was the accident in lap 1 that caused the death of a Marshall. And the third one was learning that he now was as good as Ayrton, the man he admired and always had considered the best. That pushed him over the edge.
Michael was absolutely distraught that he witnessed Senna's passing away and he knows that Senna could have been one of the iconic drivers in Formula 1. Things like these make you unforgettable. We have Vettel, we have Alonso, we have Sir Lewis Hamilton, we have Max Verstappen. I myself am a huge Lewis Hamilton fan since 2007 but Michael Schumacher was unique in every way possible.
