In this video, ShaoLan briefly introduces the history of how the Chinese language has been evolved, together with some examples of traditional and simplified Chinese characters.

I'm really interested in chinese culture, and since it has more complete and in depth meaning of the character, I prefer to use the traditional one.
I learn Chinese at school and my teacher is from North China so I'm learning the simplified characters.
I'm learning traditional Chinese :)

@@mayanlogos92 Traditional is a lot more consistent so you can guess words you don't know e.g. guo in Traditional for 過、鍋 whereas guo in Simplified for 过、锅. the latter 2 look totally different from one another

I started learning with traditional characters only. I honestly don’t think traditional is harder than simplified, and it gives more pronunciation clues. I know 廣 rhymes with 黃 and 國 rhymes with 或.

I feel that traditional Chinese is much easier. Meanings are much more complete and most of the characters retain their phonetic clues. Aside from the fact that they take slightly longer to write, it also makes the language much less ambiguous e.g 麵 and 面, and 雨 and 雲. Traditional distinguishes the RADICAL from the CHARACTER.
And to top it off, many people use pinyin to type anyway.

The promotion of simplified characters is to increase the literacy rate. This is especially true for foreigners. The learning of traditional characters will increase the difficulty. This is why Singapore chooses to simplify Chinese characters. Singapore is an English-speaking country, if residents want to learn Chinese characters, in order to reduce the pressure on students, they naturally choose simplified characters
Simplified one for 99.9% of the Chinese speaking world including the People's Republic of China.
Traditional if you are moving/working/studying in say; Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore, or want to read signs in Cantonese in the USA or Canada.

im from hk too and we learn using traditional chinese, but i know there are other schools that use simplified and not traditional, so schoolchildren learn using one or the other(traditional in my case).

simplified chinese =\= mandarin, traditional chinese=\= cantonese. simplified or traditional is the difference in writing, while mandarin and cantonese is the difference in pronounciation.

By the way, I bought brushes and ink to learn how to write down the characters. It is so soft to write with brushes that I don't want to use pen anymore lol! Anyway... Much love from Brazil! 再見!

One example is the word for turtle. In traditional, it looks like this: 龜, that may look complicated but if you look closely it makes some sense. You can kind of see some feet of the left and a shell on the top like a turtle. But the simplified version removed all meaning, it lookes like 龟
Exactly, I'd rather have it complicated, take a little more time and get it right than do it the easy way and not really get as much out of my studies.

Traditional because although it's not easy to write it is much more intuitive, at least to me.
Also simplified came from CCP meddling lol
What seemed to be the case for characters like door and horse was that they took the commonly used cursive script and made it fit the rules of the regular script.

Let us put it this way: 簡體字 gives you the feeling like if you where standing in front of a very nicely embroided silk cloth damaged by moths. With 繁體字 you watch that same silk embroidery in its pristine beauty. I began learning 繁體，later I went to 大陸 and was kind of "encouraged by teachers" to write 簡體， at the end I got messed up and wrote many caracters that didn't exist (in those times there was no internet, we used pen and paper to write). So I sorted myself and decided to only write in 繁體字。I can read 簡體字 but if I can choose, the reading is much more comfortable in 繁體字 for me. And by the way, to write fonologicaly zhuyin fuhao is more aesthetic, authentic and accurate than latin based pinyin. Foreigners tend to pronounce the latin pinyin letters like the latin letters in their mother tongues, which does not really help for learning the correct pronunciation. The same happens to chinese the other way round when they learn a foreign language....

About zhuyin & pinyin you're right... pinyin* definitely doesn't help the pronunciation. I've found a chart online and ith I'll learn zhuyin so later on I'll be able to learn the sounds of a character with the help of zhyin :)) pinyin really makes things more confusing instead of making them easier. Hey. Do you have Facebook or Instagram or twitter? Could I add you on at least one of them. I'd love to learn from you...

Sir, I respect your choice. But, in fact, Pinyin (roman alphabet phonetic system) was invented over 200 years earlier than Zhuyin Fuhao. Please dig deeper before saying something you have no clear clues.
Fun fact: there are actually two versions of simplified Chinese and you may find some older generations in mainland China are still using the first version of simplified Chinese. For example, my grandpa will write my name in “traditional Chinese characters” but it's actually the first version of simplified Chinese. The first version of simplified Chinese was actually promoted by the "republic of china government" (so maybe in Taiwan you are actually using it instead of real "traditional Chinese") The reason behind using the simplified version in mainland china is to make writing easier. Back in the time when mainland china finally ended the war, almost 80-90 % of people cannot read or write, so it's important to raise literacy. This is the time government started to design the new simplified Chinese.
They didn't design anything XD Most of the simplified stuff is just random scribbles from Cursive. Sure, it's easier to write, but a lot of meaning is lost. So much so that Japanese and Taiwanese can't read 簡体字.

My answer for you: *Learn It All*
I studied traditional as a kid, but in college switched to simplified. I feel that simplified is a lot more practical but traditional serves as a more accurate reflection into Chinese culture and thought by the combination of radicals. It also helps bridge the common culture China shares with with Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Simplified is more ethnocentric in that respect.
Did you know, Japan uses their own set of characters (shinjitai 新字体) which is sort of a middle way between Traditional and Simplified.
Most "simplified" characters came from the calligraphy form of 草书. In fact the character "书" is a very good example. Most Chinese people don't even know that because calligraphy is mostly reduced to an art thesedays, especially the 草书 form, and because simplified is used in the mainland people just assume its some kind of propaganda tool but its far from the truth. Don't feel bad about using either because both forms are equally traditional and both have a rich history behind it.

I prefer traditional one, I learned traditional when I lived at Taiwan. And to tell the truth it is more meaningful and easier to recall as long as you get good imagination, I find it hard to recognize and differ simplified sometimes. Somehow the more strokes I need to write one character, it makes me calmer. 哈哈哈
But writing more strokes becomes troublesome when you have less than an hour to write a 500 word essay
@@yuehjoly556 That's true. Several times I forgot one or two strokes for character I wrote and it changed the meaning entirely. It's relaxing when you have time to write and use it for recreational activity

I feel traditional is harder. There is a reason why Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese all stopped using traditional Chinese characters as part of their written language. Simplified Chinese just followed suit.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW. of the 3500 most commonly used characters ( if you know this much you can read 99.5% of characters in media in china ) only 30% have a simplified written version. So if you say yoo want to learn traditional you learn 100 % traditional . When you say you want to learn simplified what you learn is about 70 % traditional and about 30 % is simplified.

I chose traditional form so that it could sync with my hanja learning ✌🏻which could be helpful for my Korean.

It's like saying which you should learn, American English or British English. It's the same language just spoken, or in this case written slightly differently and most Chinese can read both Simplified and Traditional.
When you write traditional, you write out of a thousand plus years of evolution that is shaped by culture, stories, poetic meanings behind them. You appreciate and feel it. Whereas writing in simplified is more of an engineered process where all meaning is lost and doesn't really help further anyone's appreciation for the language. It's devoid of anything of value. By learning traditional, you will come to have a deeper foundation of written Chinese, and will be able to guess simplified characters better. The same is not true vice versa.
That's just your personal feelings. Most of simplified Chinese characters was tracable back to 2000 years also. Nothing about engineering.
When you write English words, does that give you a feeling of engineering also? Coz modern English is quite different from ancient English when Shakepear was still alive.

As a student, I prefer simplified Chinese. It’s easier to write and memorise. I don’t really care about meaning or symbolism I just want to pass.

猪 is the simplified form of 豬.

To be honest, I use traditional Chinese because it is the normal form of Chinese characters and it makes a lot sense to me by their characters’ structure and radicals.
You all should learn simplified. I'm avg at like simplified but I can still read traditional. Plus simplified is going to be way easier to write (and learn)
I’ve always been curious:
How did the character “衛” (as in, 衛生 的 衛) become simplified into becoming “卫”??
Though I’ve grown up learning the simplified characters (make a guess where I’m from!), I feel that the traditional characters bring out more, no pun intended, character and culture into the appreciation for the evolution of the chinese language.
And yes, admittedly, learning chinese by rote (i.e. being forced to write and memorise thousands of characters, sadly mostly under duress) - instead of making meaningful connection of the words we write and use - made me resentful learning Chinese in my formative years.
Thus, I still think that Chinese people should learn the traditional characters, like the Taiwan and Hong Kong people do.

The current Pinyin system used in mainland China is developed by the Chinese Communist Party in the 1950s after attempts to Latinize Chinese characters. Records of this can be seem starting in the 1930s in Yan’an. Communist Party members such as Qu Qiubai actually went to the USSR in the early 1930s to work with sinologists, he later published a book called “Chinese Latinized Characters”.
The simplification of Chinese characters was done, after the Communist party realized it was impossible to Latinize Chinese characters in China. This is similar to how the Chinese Communist Party tried to reduce the Mongolian language used in inner Mongolia last year by introducing simplified Chinese textbooks instead. These attempts are to disconnect a group of people from its past culture, in order to secure ruling power. Similarly, the Vietnamese language today was Latinized by the French, and is vastly different from its past form.
It comes from the seldomly-used Japanese katakana ヱ, which is pronounced as "weh"

If you love Chinese pop culture, which most of the time you’re gonna find that it’s from Taiwan, I think, traditional is way more helpful. If you want to learn how to write, try simplified.

A better example of how writing medium changes writing. Cursive scripts which involve not lifting the pen until the end of a word were developed for alphabetic scripts only after better pen technology made it possible to draw a longer line without reapplying ink in between each character. Prior to this latin characters were always separated, which is why on ancient Greek and Roman buildings and writings you don't see any cursive.

no, simplified, because simplified chinese in ma has three strokes, and traditional chinese in ma has nine strokes, so the answer is simplified chinese!
I recommend you not to bully yourself. Learning simplified Chinese can transform your Chinese language ability to a practical skill as 99.9% of Chinese can read simplified Chinese. If you have certain artistcs pursuit, you can start from traditional Chinese, but that doubles your study load and you will quickly feel frasturated.
But for some reasons is very difficult find traditional chinese movies my God. thankfully I am studying traditional one.

The "horse" part is used as a phonetic hint. Horse is "ma3", similar to mother "ma1". So the character tells you that it's a word pronounced like horse, but has something to do with a woman, so it's mother, "ma1".

for me the traditional is the real chinese symbolic to be patriotic and the simplified is symbolic to the western culture

Simplified Chinese would be a smarter choice - 1 billion or more people vs Taiwan, Hk, Macao population. Traditional Chinese has more strokes therefore heavy workload on the brain. One learn Mandarin to communicate not for sentimentality the reason many give for choosing Traditional Chinese - " original chinese " . Chinese Characters had undergone so many changes through the centuries. If they were presented with the " original chinese" they wouldn't know what to make of it. In conclusion, Simplified Chinese is a smarter choice.

Bruh, what is the point to learn the tradional characters when you can understand pretty much all of them
It depends on what the language Chinese means to you, if it's just a tool for communication, then knowing only simplified characters would be enough. But if you ever want to learn more about the language (have you ever think about how is the character "头" represents head?), traditional characters is the way to go.

We will all switch to Romanized letters but have computers which know both the simplified and traditional Chinese to translate old texts for us and make all old texts available for free on the internet. That is the only fair, just thing to do.

most cantonese and Traditional chinese user can read and speak mandarin/simplified chinese but rarely otherway around and i know and speak both without learning . hong kong and tw use traditional chinese but china use simplified chinese because education history and CCP dislike and stopping kids speak cantonese in school because they want to rule it easier.
and one more important thing , most translate traditional chinese as 繁體中文 , 繁體 mean similar to complex , not traditional (chinese only been simplified once in new china history , never been complex ) , Which is totally wrong! and even more chinese people will tell you is right, thats because CCP been brain washing younging since open day of china.
before 1997 old days of hong kong , what we learn in school, the true translate of traditional chinese should be 正楷中文/正楷字/傳統中文 ( even google and steams translate it wrong now days) , but after 1997 everything is corrupted.
