This added 100 ft to my throw in 2 attempts. I overthrew EVERYTHING. My arm doesn't hurt anymore...
Thanks man.
This might be the best explanation of backhand timing on CZcams. Keep it up man, so many people struggle to understand this concept.
I appreciate the support. Also, I’m glad I’m able to make some sense out of this. My next video should be a better explanation of the Backhand in general. Thanks again!!
I totally agree, only criticism I have is making new terms that can be misinterpreted, like the “equals sign” stuff. Best breakdown I’ve heard or seen.
@@Siiafu Yes terminology is frustrating and It's only going to be a continued problem as I come up with new terminology. I had no idea how careful with words I needed to be. I'm sure i'll keep making mistakes but as long as I make some sense I'll be happy. I appreciate the feedback!
@@slingshotdiscgolf1897 love the series. I’d expect a massive influx of views if I were you
@@Siiafu It's extremely overwhelming right now to be honest. I never thought this would catch on. Hopefully I can keep improving the content.
I appreciate the language you’re using here. So many people when trying to teach use the common buzz words (pull, reach back, explode, rotate etc.) but they aren’t describing how it actually feels to execute it so their words have no meaning and it doesn’t translate well to the learner.
Facts. As someone who LOVES teaching the sport to newbies, that is seriously their number 1 complaint most of the time. The jargon has gotten a bit inaccessible...
You just made more sense out of it all than any single pro ever has.
Wow. Such an undertated video. I speak from recent experience in saying this is true. Just went from 300 to 415ft in 1 day just a few weeks ago after I figured out hownto keep my arm lose. All my throws felt powerful but I was only getting just over 300 ft.... them boom, I tried it once to see and I threw 400. Tried again and got a 403. Disc after disc over 400ft... it was like a light bulb had turned on. Immediate distance.
"Pull like you're starting a lawn mower" , "rip the disc", "explode out of the power pocket", "pulling in a straight line will increase power"....we have all heard these on the course and on youtube, even from some pros. While these have truths in them, they are rarely taken as they should be and end up hurting new players. But you managed to debunk some of these myths.. Keep up these videos. Break those disc golf myths man. Save people time, injury, and frustration. Great video dude, great job.
Thanks! I’m so glad that you’ve figured it out. This is the best comment I could have got. Just started the channel yesterday. I just hope I can explain this information over the 10 videos (season one basically) that I’ve uploaded. I want people to experience a breakthrough with their distance. Thanks again for the positive feedback.
I’m the prototypical stocky white boy with no hips. I’ve been doing the “starting the lawnmower” pull through and trying to figure out how to engage my hips. This makes so much sense. It’s not about how many times you try it nor how many times someone explains it. Sometimes it just takes 1 really good explanation to click. This makes soooo much sense!
You DONT engage the hips with your hips. You do it with legs (video yet to come but it’s on the way) and your back/abs/left arm. Your hips are merely a swivel for power. The video doesn’t really tell the whole story until you watch all the videos. Also, all the videos still makes up a small percentage of what I have to share. It will take time for me to get all this on CZcams with decent explanations. Keep grinding! I appreciate the support Alex!
@@slingshotdiscgolf1897 Cool stuff, you and seabass have really helped me out
What does your race have to do with anything?
To paint a picture, obviously. Why do you feel like he shouldn't?

I've been throwing 300 ft for a while now, been playing about a year. I don't practice a lot, and I'm ok with that - it's for fun. But after watching this and changing my mental model of the throw, I went and played a casual round and threw a 413 ft drive. The concept of a loose arm and treating it like a whip is MONEY ! Hats-off for figuring that out.
413 is a bomb! great job. Although this video paints a very small picture of what needs to happen to slingshot at full potential, but it certainly is a good start. As you add the left arm/back/legs you will start whipping it much further. Thank you for using the info and I’m thrilled it helped.
Dude! Update! I haven't played disc golf on a course in a month. First throw trying the "noodle arm" and I ACED. LET'S GOO!!! Your video has made my form feel better than it's ever felt. Smooth, controlled and absolutely smashing shots. Can't thank you enough
My jaw is on the floor. I am so glad this video came up on my recommended page! This makes so much sense
Holy cow! I’m a senior so I lack the arm strength to pull. And the whip was always emphasized on the snap of the wrist. I’m out the door to give this a go. Makes so much sense!
You brought a tear to my eye bro!! You have unleashed the secret that has been hidden for years, lol. Great coaching 👊🥏
FANTASTIC content. Looking forward to watching all your videos. You have a gift for explaining form and this is much needed in the disc golf community.
Dude!! Thank you!! I've been playing 32 years(im 51). I've got lots of physical issues, including a broken throwing shoulder(major cartilage damage). I watched this video last night, and incorporated it into my game, today. Went from 200ft to 250 consistently. And my shoulder doesn't hurt!!! My shoulder always hurts after a round. Have a sub and and upvote.
I started golfing 9 years ago at 57 years old and to this point, at 66- I’d come to accept that 275’ was as far a consistent shot I could muster. I happened upon this video and got a little excited and I went out and tried to apply as much as I could…and Holy Cow!! My drives are regularly 300’ to 325’!!!! I’ve always thought my arm was too week to throw anything faster than a 9 speed, but now I am excited to attempt faster discs. THANK YOU!THANK YOU!
Excellent! Ive been playing for a year and struggling with any real distance. I had been constantly searching for good content to help break me out of the rounding/pulling/all arm air bounce throwing I knew I was doing. This and all your other videos are going to be on repeat for me as I correct poor form. Thank you and keep the videos coming. Drills, form break downs, montages of good form, what ever you got. Love it.
I really appreciate the common sense and trial and error approach to all of these videos you put out. I'm looking forward to trying to put these points into action. Keep up the great work man!
5:32 This drill is so money. This is the best explanation I've seen when it come building the intuition of hip drive and arm lag. I'm going to recommend this video as often as I can.
Thank you so much. I’ll keep trying to improve the content.
Agreed. Absolutely golden.
Engaging the bigger muscles
Thank you for your videos. This one made a ton of sense and explains why my shoulder has been hurting. Can't wait to practice this
I think the worst advice I took was starting the lawn mower idea. I understand the hand has to be the tip of the whip, and that the hips drive it, but my arm always wants to take control and start the lawn mower. Maybe I'll try setting the disc on a wall and try to completely relax the arm, not even keep it level with my deltoid, and see if I can noodle the arm and drive it. Good video, thanks.
Oh man..... Throwing for my 13th year now and what a week! Got my first ace finally and was so excited I couldn't sleep. Ended up finding this tutorial and hit the field the next day. Finally broke the 400' barrier with a 410' drive! Still got some work to do to clean up my transfer but what a week! Thanks for the form help!
Love it. People need to quit telling beginners to reach back and pull through. Makes no sense
This video is spot on my friend! As a predominant FH player, I struggled BH for years and would rarely use it - I could never achieve good distance no matter how hard I "pulled" or "threw" the disc or how many videos I watched about the x-step, timing, reach back, weight shift, etc. Then just recently through pure dumb luck while doing some field work, I stumbled upon this same idea of keeping my arm loose like a noodle and letting it whip across my body very similar to what you explain in this video - presto - it worked and felt way more natural! I couldn't believe it - I gained significant distance and actually felt like I wasn't working as hard. I wish someone had explained this to me long ago. Now on the tee pad, I tell myself stuff like "stay loose - turn - don't throw" as a reminder. And...I'll keep watching your videos to improve my form as mine still sucks. Thank you!
About to get a net and practice this through the winter you’re the best! This explanation is so well said!
I think it’s important to mention it took me hundreds of hours to get to the day I gained a 100 feet. There are no quick fixes. This is just the start of building better habits. In my opinion. Although some immediate distance is also the goal.
Hey I got a question. How do I keep my torso/upper arm 90° throughout whitout "hugging myself" or should I call it having my upper arm collapse into my chest. Every time I watch myself, I see that I collapse if I try to be loose.
@@HuckingPlastic I’ll cover that very soon. Stay tuned
@@slingshotdiscgolf1897 I’m wondering about this as well. Thanks for sharing your journey man. So helpful!
Absolutely fantastic video!
Wow, thorough and accessible explanation of the backhand form. Thanks!
Thank you! This has helped immensely. Never would have figured this out on my own, and no one else talks about this. Looking forward to watching your other content. Keep up the great work!
This is great stuff. I'm convinced that when many pros complete their reach back, their wrist is up with the disc tilted up, then they relax their arm completely when they rip and their wrist actually falls naturally in that time to flat as they sling.
Great advice. I’m going to work on this. Thanks
This is a great explanation and really helped me. I switched from club golf to disc golf about a year ago. There are so many similarities in the 2 golf games. I am a 5 handicap in club golf. To get any distance in golf, you have to stay relaxed and let the big muscles do the work (legs, abs, etc.). This creates a lag in the golf club head which results in a whip action that greatly increases the club head speed. What he is explaining is actually the same thing. Using this method, you create arm lag and a whipping action which greatly increases release speed. Thanks so much for this video!!!
a well explained video, and something i recently discovered myself. I like the way you break it down. You sir, have earned another sub!
I subbed the instant you talked about your eureka moment. Great content so far. Looking forward to seeing more about what you've been able to learn.
I appreciate the support Jake! Although I can’t throw as good as the pros, their technique is no longer a mystery to me...but...teaching it is a mystery I have yet to solve. Very difficult to explain. I’ll keep trying. Feedback is always needed for my improvement. We all need to learn how to slingshot. The game is totally different once you do. Keep grinding and hopefully I help in some way in your backhand journey.
Awesome video!!!! Can’t wait to try this out!! Thanks for posting!!!
I dig this tutorial...very well explained. Thanks!!
Perfectly explained. I immediately understand what has been holding me back from next-level distance.
I'll be in the field tomorrow. Definitely gonna watch all your videos henceforth.
ive been applying your teachings for the past two days and i definitely had that ah ha! moment multiple times where all my body motion is finally get through into my arm. sorry this is long but this teaching of the backhand form is absolutely spot on and i think mislead or down right taught wrong by so many people. every disc golfer needs this. please everyone stop teaching the "pull"! i feel like ive been lied to for my 2 years of disc golfing. again thank you so much for really wanting to explain and share your knowledge i can tell you have put in a lot of effort to articulate.
Don't be sorry for speaking your piece, I feel almost the same way. I never considered watching videos 5 years ago when I started. How I wish I had... made for a rough time to unlearn many bad habits and terrible form.
I have struggled for so long with and wrist break recovery and always popping my elbow during rounds and this has really helped me understand where my issue is that film examination never could. THANK YOU FIR THIS SO MUCH
Subbed. I learned this a little while ago and definitely added distance to my drives. I used to do exactly what you mentioned in timing the arm and hips because that is what tutorials teach you. Great explanation.
Very good description of the whip effect!
Wicked video man ! You broke that down perfectly I thought. I allways say if you can explain something in the easiest terms possible and have it make sense to everyone then your good at teaching 👌. I'm definitely going to think of this tonight when I chuck a round.
Clear and concise. Thanks man
Thank you for this video and for using useful terminology. Makes complete sense on how you’re explaining it, and I can’t wait to apply it.
Thank you for making all of these videos! This is helping me out a bunch, so far not much more distance but a way better feel when throwing and easier distance. Keep making these :)
This was very informative. Thank you!
Understanding the difference between dynamic and static stretching is HUGE! I played two sports in college and the same principles of stretching apply to this video. Knowing how to stay loose the right way is a game-changer!
I use the same principles when talking about the Allen Iverson crossover. Absolutely great point. Thanks for this comment!
This is awesome advice man, super cool to see your journey and thanks for sharing it!! Keep it up!!
These videos are so awesome and to the point! More people need to see this channel!
Great video can't wait to try this next round. Love the dog.
This is really helpful. Going to work on this. Thank you
I love absolutely love this video! I recently fell in love with Frisbee and always wanted to know how to throw farther and that relaxation of the arm made me realize my mistake! That also explains the elbow pain and lack of power in my throws! Thanks so much
Nailed this. Sent this to all my AM buddies! Best I’ve seen for sure
This is a great video. Great explanation
I stopped pulling from the reachback 8 months ago and got more distance by letting the hips get me into the pocket and then focused on the towel drill to create acceleration and started throwing 350 feet at will on the course and sometimes 400+ and occasionally 450+ with a big run up. But in general the bigger my run up the worse my throw and I know that something is fundamentally wrong with my sequencing and I'm capable of throwing 500+. In this video you're describing the unlearning of much of what got me where I am, and I am so ready and excited!!
Have to say it again ,the single most important YT clip/tutorial for my own progress in discgolf,Big Thanks.
Well, this was fantastic. Can't wait to get out in the field.
Love the content man, great work!
Wow dude great point here!!! I'm excited to try this, getting the hips turned first instead of the "equal" sign sounds like the key!
Dude...: EXACTLY what I needed!!!! Thank you!
Awesome content, perfectly explained everything 👌
So good! This tip made a big difference. Thanks.
These videos speak to my game. Thanks for the content.
Thanks for the Support! I'll keep trying to improve the content.
Spot on ,got this a while ago, but you showing it so clear that i have to "lag" even more ,because my arm is not nearly so late as you show, but i throw 330 today with NO EFFORT ,so there is "new" hope for more distance in my case. Thanks for this enlightment!
Great video. I've recently been pondering how the pros can all easily throw over 400' without much apparent effort. Speed guns show their release speed is well over 70mph. So the question is how do you get your hand to be moving that fast at the moment you release the disc? And it shouldn't be super hard, but rather a fluid motion. I think a whip or slingshot is a good analogy because the idea is that the motion starts out slow but is accelerating the whole time until the point of release. Tristan Tanner is the poster child for a slow X-step that accelerates smoothly to the point of release. If you focus on "pulling", chances are your hand is moving the fastest as it approaches the pocket but then actually slows down after that point when instead it should be speeding up like the tip of a whip. When I look at guys like Simon when he's throwing at his 70% effort level I realize that trying to throw harder isn't the answer. One of my mantras is "let the disc do the work"-- try to give it lots of spin and snap rather than trying to throw it "hard", and what do you know, it goes farther!. Danny Lindahl's "slow is smooth and smooth is fast" isn't quite right. I think it really is more like, "accelerate smoothly and fluidly like a whip, and your release point will have maximum speed".
Such an underrated video. Better explained than the pros. Time to go apply it and report findings 🤘🏼
Great explanation sir! This should help. Can't wait to get out and try it.
Fantastic video!!! I figured out by trial awhile back that if my arm is really loose I throw much farther and more accurately. Your video explains how and why. Thank you 🙏...liked and subscribed!!!
This video instantly made me a subscriber. Great information dude
Great video, man. I figured this out myself a few months ago and I'm still surprised at how people use the term "noodle arm" in a derogatory sense. I think you're spot on describing how your arm should in fact feel like a dead weight noodle arm.
Thanks for this. Gonna try out!
Great video. Thank you so much. Perfect explanation
This is Great stuff love it!
After watching, I tried this slingshot thing the next chance I got. And man does it ever work! I feel likeI finally found that “thing” that I’d been looking for for a while now. Now I finally know what I need to work on (looser arm, better stride/plant, using my abs more). I had more control of my 12 and 13 speed drivers! I was really pushing my 9s. But where I noticed it most was my 7s. Ideally, 7 speeds should convincingly outfly your mids, not be glorified mids (as was my case). Thanks Slingshot guy! You just unlocked my bag!
Absolutely fascinating! I'll be trying this next time I'm out
Dude, you are awesome! Keep up the great content!
For sure an excellent explanation that I've needed. It's clear the big drives don't need big muscles as many of the pros look nothing like body builders. With great power comes great responsibility though, and so the work on accuracy begins. Thanks
Love the video bro!🤘 You had a way of explaining it that hit me in the face😳 Thank you!
I think you mentioned some very helpful tips that I'm excited to try and incorporate tonight after work. Thank you for sharing.
This really is a great explanation. I’m pretty surprised that there are so many other videos and none I’ve watched mention how loose your arms actually need to be. After watching this I drill my shots an extra 50+ft with less effort. Many thanks 🙏
Very well explained, thanks! 👌
Effortlessly effortless
This is gotta be one of the best videos on CZcams. Thanks man!
Thank you!
I increased my best throw of 269 ft with my Valkyrie to 370 on my first attempt after watching this video. I was still in pain from throwing incorrectly a few days ago, so I think 400 isn’t too much to expect when healthy. Thanks for the tips!
Excellent video. This is in my top three best distance driving tip videos I've seen, and I've seen a lot.
That means a lot Jimmy. I hope you get something useful from my Channel. Thanks for the support.
Heading out to the feild in a few... fingers crossed! All this makes sense. Big thanks!
As someone who usually tops out at about 250-270 feet, and have been playing for about 16 years now, if this is finally the video that makes everything click, I'll climb to the highest mountain and scream my praises for you. Seriously though, I've watch I dunno.....I've lost track......probably hundreds of videos on YT on how to increase distance, proper form, selecting the right discs, etc. Some videos never really click with me mentally, I'll watch it and nothing really seems revolutionary to me. Sometimes I'll watch a video and it'll immediately make me wanna grab my disc bag and head to the nearest course, convinced that what I just saw would finally solve all my problems, only to still find myself still stuck throwing under 300 feet.
After watching your video, the first thing that caught my attention was when you were talking about how it's impossible to swing your arm quickly if you keep it firm and locked. I've always felt like that's one thing I have a huge issue with.......my arm always feels tensed up when I throw. I've always had issues with gripping things too tightly, but in my mind I always thought I was supposed to keep a pretty firm grip on the disc all the way up to the release, so I've never really thought about changing this aspect.
I definitely don't feel like my arm is loose like a noodle when I'm throwing.....I feel like I have to keep my arm perfectly straight, at least until I draw my arm back. So yeah, that very well could be at the root of my problem, my arm being relatively rigid and tense instead of keeping it loose and trying to whip it. I watch some of these guys throw and it blows my mind how smooth and effortless their deliveries are and they get massive distance.
I've always excelled at throwing when it comes to anything from a baseball to a football, even a bowling ball. I've always been able to throw balls far and with velocity, and with disc golf I've NEVER been able to do either! It's always frustrated me and I watch all these videos, and I've put in the time, put in the practice, and I don't throw any farther than when I first started playing almost 2 decades ago. The problem isn't that I haven't put forth the practice and effort......its that I haven't been using proper techniques when practicing so instead I've just been drilling in bad habits for a long time.
I almost wish I had a reset button and I could forget all my experiences throwing disc golf and wipe the slate clean, and then watch this video as my introduction to the sport instead of trying to unlearn all my bad habits and techniques. I'm going to try my best to throw in the next day or 2, and I will 100% focus on trying to keep my arm loose. I have a feeling it'll be easier said than done. Maybe I can take a muscle relaxer lol
This makes so much sense. I’m going out on the field tomorrow to practice this and hopefully see the improvements.
One thing I wanted to know is that once you are tucked into the Slingshot Pocket, is it then time to manually swing your disc arm out or does your arm naturally keep noodling out from the rotation?
Also I think one of the main reasons that us beginners/intermediate players have only just started to understand this Noodle Arm/Passive Arm method is that we were always taught to Pull a lawnmower ripcord or Bash down a door with our elbow and to me I visualize Pulling my disc arm across my body with brute force to achieve those things.
Thanks
Your videos are so precious, i love your work, thanks.
This is real good advice and exactly what I tell people trying to get better, just hold that shoulder angle
Excited to try this out in the field more. I am well aware that I am strong-arming my disc. I can feel it and I can see it in recordings. But I can't figure out how to stop! When trying to do the drive procedures in a split second, my body just defaults to it and I am struggling to break the habit.
5:35 "You are gonna use your abs..." I watched this video and slowly went through the motions in my living room before heading out for some field work and to play 18 yesterday. When I woke up this morning, I couldn't roll out of bed because my abs were so sore from working on including what I learned. Maybe that means that I'm doing it right. Thanks for the videos. I'm only a couple months into playing disc golf, but you have definitely helped me refine my form.
I had the problem where I would reach back thinking my shoulders came along with it. Nope! I filmed myself and I basically had no power with my first technique. I kept questioning, why the heck was I only throwing 300 max? Then I fixed my shoulder issue and that gave me an extra 75 ft. Then I figured out my grip wasn't the power grip and I broke the 400 ft threshold.
Thanks to you I broke 450 with this, along with pushing your left shoulder for the RHBH throw. It really is about technique. I mean Eagle is a scrawny guy but he can throw it 700 ft. That tells me its not about strength either.
So thank you again!
I'm glad this is resonating with people. I throw 400+ and often struggle to communicate how to achieve the type of relaxed throw that gives the best distance.
The best video I’ve seen explain what pros do to get distance.
GREAT VIDEO BRO!!!
Glad this was recommended, just subscribed I think this will greatly improve my distance I've been stuck at 300 to 350 for awhile
This is gold. I discovered this exact noodle arm throw last winter and basically yeah, I went from throwing as hard as I could and getting 330' to letting my arm whip and getting another hundred feet. Once you feel that sling there's no going back. The hardest part at first is getting the release nose angle where you want it because you gotta stay loose until that last moment.
After watching your video, the next day I was throwing way farther than normal. It was so exciting. No one else explained where I got the help.
Great concept.. Underated video.
I love this video! I could tell a difference already. Much more powerful now 😁
great take on this. this is what we do in the Spin and Throw disc golf group.
That’s awesome. I’ll check out your channel. Let’s talk form sometime Dustin! Thanks for kind words.
