Hey, great review, I did pretty much the same thing when getting the Dell XPS 9510 OLED earlier in the year, then the 14" MacBook Pro recently. You don't realize how many shortcuts that you picked up in windows over the years until you get into an entirely new operating system. It to me almost five minutes to figure out how to right-click without a mouse or authorize my iBooks app on a MacBook Pro😁!
Wow the shortcuts and muscle memory. The struggle is real! I made a list of 13 quirks and I’m recording the video this weekend of how I get around all of them. Windows just does some things better…
@@MichaelJLong even though I'm an android user, used to have an iPhone and not going back, I've been thinking of getting a Mac for its performance and efficiency benefits, and using parallels to get windows on it for tasks where MacOS doesn't work for me

This is a wonderfully helpful video! I have long-debated whether to spend the extra money for the convenience of a Macbook. I love my XPS desktop, but I have never had a high-end laptop. This greatly helps inform my decision.

I have the XPS 9510 and some of the issues have ported over. Unimpressive battery life and loud fan noise. Plus, sometimes I grab my laptop first thing in the morning when it's been dormant but charging over night and its red hot.
But spending £2,500 on a laptop to move some minor frustrations is not an insignificant hurdle. I'm also skeptical that 16GB of unified memory will be a suitable replacement for 32gb in the XPS, long term. My 2020 16" i7 MacBook Pro with 16GB ram failed miserably at multitasking and struggled far more than this XPS does.
I think if money wasn't an issue then I'd swap, but at that price I'm inclined to stay plugged in and put up with some fan noise.
That’s a very fair assessment. If I wasn’t editing photos and videos I probably would have stuck with the XPS another year.
Between the two of them, which would you recommend for someone entering the Content creator space, like Graphic Design, Digital Marketing, 3D Design and Photography?
I went with the Mac purely for this reason. If I were just doing spreadsheets I’d stick with Windows. But the creative tools like Davinci and Adobe are so much better on a Mac with the Apple silicon.

@@MichaelJLong I had to laugh at #dell; I posted a review about their Inspiron 5420 laptop-- a glorified core duo, and noted how loud the fan was and how often it came on. I'm not sure why Dell doesn't vent air out the side to reduce noise. Their response was: "contact us" and that would have been silly since I went to Best Buy and felt the bottom of various laptops and dell's seemed the hottest.
I love my MacBook Pro M1 and I'm hoping that my ThinkPad p16s (AMD) that's on order is nice too.

Between the two of them, which one would be more recommended for someone getting into computer engineering and programming in general? Also, I'm looking to have at least 1tb of storage for these two things because of how much space is needed for those two professions. Would it be recommended for me to get a 1tb storage model or a 512gb ssd model with a 1tb external storage device?
I recently bought my XPS 15 and so far it's great! Even with Windows 11, the software is smooth as butter. The i7 gets the job done and RTX 3050 is enough to do the rendering for CAD software. 512GB of storage is enough, but an external SSD wouldn't be needed since you can add another NVMe SSD with the extra slot. As far as I know, trackpad issues are fixed and you can contact Dell for a return if there are any defects in your product. The laptop is great, but some programs are also better with a Mac. A lot of my Computer Science major friends either use gaming laptops or a MacBook. From what they've told me, they like Windows' freedom more rather than Apple's macOS cage. Both are great devices. I chose the XPS 15 9510 and I'm happy with my purchase. Just be sure to get a skin like a dbrand since fingerprints can get annoying on the trackpad and the palmrest.
I'm an electronics engineer and I got a 2018 XPS 15" that served me during all my bachelor. We also did a lot of programming and computer science and if I go back I would pick the XPS again over the MacBook. Every classmate with an Apple product had so many issues setting up and running code that it slowed them back. I highly suggest a Windows laptop for this classes since the overall compatibility and OS freedom lets you speed up the learning process.
If you are too lean on Apple you can still buy a MB and run a VM but it's not worth it for what I've seen from my colleagues.

Great discussion on this thread. I agree, if you’re going for programming, the XPS is probably better than the Mac (unless you specifically need to do XCode).
If you’re getting a 15” XPS I’d go with a 500GB drive and add a 1TB drive in the second NVME slot (if you’re comfortable).

I am a computer engineer and used a Macbook pro 13 2015'' retina for half of my bachelor and master's, and I'm using a top-line XPS 15 (at the range of M1 Max Macbook Pro range) to work. Both of them are awesome and you can't go wrong with either.
If you work with GPU, and need CUDA and GPU power is an important thing, go with Dell + NVidia GPU.
If you want more battery life, appreciate portability go with Mac. For example, if you will leave your workplace for a day and want to get things done, if you have a Mac you don't need to take a charger and a mouse as the XPS.
I would say that it is easier to be productive on MacOS than Windows, and I will list some features that come easily to my mind. MacOS finder is more helpful than Windows' Explorer. Macs' terminal is easier to handle. There is a software called "brew" on Mac that takes care of all libraries that you want to install in your system in a very good way, in case you program in C++. Mac OS is more consistent with shortcuts than Windows.

@@MichaelJLong definitely felt the same way a few days ago when I visited a laptop store and tried a Macbook for the very first time 😂 I'm just so used to navigating with Windows hotkeys and most especially moving my cursor thru text with ctrl and shift and arrow keys --- which was different with Mac's command modifier hotkeys (having muscle memory in mind --- using my pinky vs using my thumb).

I can identify with most everything you said. The only difference is that I went from a Dell XPS 13 to a M1 MacBook Air. It's not that the Dell is a bad experience - It does most everything well. But the Mac does everything just a little bit better. That adds up.
It does not game well or code well. It also does help that most programs are made for Windows.
I have been a Mac user always. Moved to a dell XPS in 2019 because the MacBooks were terrible value at that time. I have liked it a lot but the M1 MacBook 14 almost brought me back. I just got the XPS 15 9520 after all. It’s premium but not a perfect laptop. I do like to be able to play a game after work on a beautiful screen and with lovely sounding speakers.
How did your xps trackpad perform? mine is terrible now
The trackpad has some quirks. It’s very accurate. But there is a little motion in it. Dell had issues with them and had to replace trackpads for a lot of machines.

After testing the new XPS 15 9520 (i7 12700H, 32 Gb DDR5 RAM, 1 Tb SSD, RTX 3050 Ti 4 Gb) for a few days with Premiere Pro my wife was ready to switch to Apple and is now quite happy with her MacBook Pro 14" (2021, M1 Pro 10-Core CPU/16-Core GPU, 32 Gb RAM, 1 Tb SSD). For the price (~3000 €) it's a much better built machine IMO.
I really want this laptop but it doesn’t contain a USB Drive. 😞

I am a windows user for years and always encounter the heating issues. Just bought an M1 macbook air at discount cuz I cannot bare the heat generated from my one year and a half age Surface 3. Maybe it is the time to embrace Apple silicon lol

random stuff and cross compiling was just not worth it for me
intresting tho how despite being 2x faster than m1 m1 air in cina the compiling took longer on my xps (25m) and i had to endure a jet engine for 25m vs literal silence
I switched to the M1 but miss Windows 11. 🤷♂️
It’s a solid machine; good battery, stable, doesn’t struggle to run many programs which has been refreshing. Still a PC person

Here I am with a fully spec'd out hackintosh dell xps running the latest ventura 13.4 beta. Don't yet me wrong, it's amazing for apple to have push the leading performance for arm processors, changing the laptop game, but I can't make the jump to apple hardware just yet.
But the xps I have currently serves my needs as a university student perfectly. Booting between os's. And having free reign of choice.
I will be heavily investing in a macbook m2 max or the m3 line when in finally comes out since that efficiency apple has is unparalleled

As a Windows User Ive tested a macbook for 2 weeks and sent it back. Top Hardware but macOS sucks without Apple products. Only buy macbook if you already have apple products. Cant run solidworks or new games natively on that machine..Kinda sucks too 😂
I wouldn't call myself a PC Guy or Mac Guy I use both. I have a Gaming PC and Macs. For home I use M1 Mac Mini and My Gaming PC for one the go I use M1 MacBook Pro and HP Envy 15t EP000
Similar story to you bought a fully decked XPS, maxed ram then windows 11 insider program nuked it's performance completely. Battery life is utter shit, any more than 10 minutes and it scorches my legs, and oh yeah 45 minutes into a session and I'm needing the power cord - simply unacceptable on all fronts. To make it worse the bluetooth on it is complete crap both my bose headsets crack and pop and cut out when I leave my office but work across the street on my phone and tablet. Clearly the issue is windows and laptops, I am buying a macbook Pro 14 and never going back to windows or Dell after a lifetime of being a PC guy.
Dell made a big mistake by not including an AMD variant to the XPS line.
Right‽ I tested a Zephyrus G14 with an AMD and it was amazing. That does eliminate Thunderbolt though due to licensing… 🤔
Including Thunderbolt to an AMD motherboard is not impossible, I’ve seen it on a few desktop motherboards. Considering the premium Dell charges for the XPS line that should not be too difficult to implement, they can also offset the cost be including USB C 3.2 ports.

@@MichaelJLong Yes, after a week of constant usage I now have managed to master everything I need to know about the MacBook pro 14 laptop. Overall I am really glad that I switched from the Dell XPS over to the MacBook pro. Being able to run Rhino 3d program/Adobe software with the fan barely being on is amazing! This laptop will last me for at least the next 5years!
This is exactly how I felt when I first switched to mac for my job. I was AMAZED at how second nature the trackpad was especially. I have since gone back to Windows, but would love to go mac again. Lack of touchscreen and gaming options stop me though.

I had a Dell XPS 15 from 2017 and got nothing but trouble.
Blue screens from nowhere, audio that malfunctioned, and just unstable in general.
It got so bad that Dell actually agreed to give me a whole new replacement computer.

Not exactly. The new one was as bad as the old.
That's after having had a flawless experience using a Macbook Pro 13" for 7 years.
After 1.5 years of issue after issue with Dell, I went straight back to Apple and have been happy ever since.
P.S. Fun fact: You probably wouldn't think so but I actually use an Android phone. The high-end ones are really good and fully comparable with iPhones (IMO slightly better even).
I had a couple of support issues with this one. Same as yours, Dell did take care of me. I plan to bring that up in my deep dive on the XPS.
Android often tempts me. The family management of iOS is one of the biggest reasons I haven’t switched. 😁
@@MichaelJLong I've always bought Apple care just in case but I've never needed it. Not once in like 10 years of using macbooks daily. That says something about the kind of stability they've achieved.
iOS and Android are equally stable. It's just Windows that isn't.
You can try an Android just for fun.

You’re lucky you haven’t had issues with your MacBooks. My old fully-loaded 16’ MacBook Pro from 2011 had nothing but problems. Both the hard-drive and motherboard failed within the first 3-4 years of ownership. The thermals were absolutely terrible.

THE APPLE M1 PRO İS THE BEST
The XPS is beautifiul garbage. There are manufacturers that are still making good laptops. Not that I am against Apple, I have 2 laptops and I am writing this on my MacBook Air.
It's really not. I've had a few and rarely experienced any issues.
For those of you guys planning on buying the Dell XPS 15, I'll give you my experience over the past 5 months of using this laptop.
I needed a new laptop to study mechanical engineering in university. I was deciding between the Macbook Pro with the M1 chip or the Dell XPS 15. But after reading and watching hundreds of reviews online about how XPS 15 and Mac are basically the same, XPS is better for gaming, and how Mac is bad for ME, I decided to get the Dell XPS 15 in March.
PROS.
- The laptop arrived three weeks after I ordered it-- It was estimated to take 5 weeks, but I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived two weeks early.
- The keys are extremely satisfying to press--which allowed me to get a lot of work done simply because I was addicted to tapping the keys.
- The screen is very wide and filling--allows you to focus on everything you are working on.
- Battery life--I could watch twitch streams for 6 hours straight and the laptop would still have around 55~60% (from 100%).
- Dongle. USB and HDMI dongle included with the laptop.
CONS.
- The trackpad. Every time I left-click using the trackpad, it feels as though the bottom of the trackpad is getting stuck to some type of glue and once I lift my finger off the trackpad, the trackpad lifts off the glue and leaves this distasteful sound. I found this problem straight from when I unboxed the laptop.
- 2 weeks after purchasing the XPS 15, the screen started having issues. If you divide the screen into 4 sections, the bottom right side has a constant noticeable flickering. I tried doing everything to fix it but it just wouldn't go away. Every single time the laptop goes into sleep mode or I shut it off and reboot it, this same problem persists. After awhile, I simply gave up and started ignoring the flickering. (Only thing I have noticed that helps is plugging in the charger and using the device for one or two hours and the flickering gradually fades away.)
- Screen freezes every now and then. This has occurred around once a week for every week since March--when I first got the XPS 15.
- In-built camera. Very crummy resolution.
- Ports+dongles. There is a high-pitched whirring sound that does not go away if a dongle is plugged in.
This problem does not persist if there is no dongle. However, as a ME student and gamer, I almost always use a mouse that is connected to the laptop.
- Speakers/sound system produce momentary static if I use them for the first time of the day.
-Customer service. Basically inexistent. I moved to a different country (for university) after buying the laptop, and Dell told me that I couldn't get any help if I wasn't in the country it was delivered to. Even with the warranty, I am basically guaranteed nothing.
- League of Legends Gaming. The bottom half of the entire screen lags hard. It wasn't there for the first couple of weeks, but after 1 month, the entire bottom half of the screen momentarily freezes and unfreezes--constantly throughout the game. This persists until I connect the charger.
Overall, I would say the majority of problems I have had with the computer is hardware related.
Considering the price of the Dell XPS 15, I would trade it in for a Macbook Pro in a heartbeat and invest a bit more money in a company that has a much more reliable product and will actually help in solving problems related to their products.
For its price, the XPS 15 is NOT WORTH. I expected a MUCH better device with close to no hardware problems.
I Literally went two times higher than my dedicated budget and spent almost 2 years of savings (around $2400 with tax+extra for shipping) for this laptop.
For students who are on a budget--like I was--, I would recommend a Samsung device. Before the XPS 15, I used the Samsung notebook 9 (~$1,200) for 6 years. Games (Wizard101, League of Legends, Fortnite) worked perfectly on my Samsung device for all 6 years. All the workload that my Dell seems to be unable to handle worked unbelievably smoothly on my Samsung device.
