What to do to your lawn AFTER a renovation

- So, after you carried out any sort of lawn renovation work (seeding, topdressing etc.) you might be wondering what your next steps are. What do you do if you've got some areas that haven't come through? Thin areas?
I'm going to explain some next steps.
I also carry out this lawns first "feed and weed" and set it on the road to becoming lush, Green and thick.

At last.Someone who understands the weeds need to retain their leaves for the weed killer to do it’s work. I try to avoid mowing after application until the weeds start to die.

I live in Denmark, and recently (1st may) tried a small renovation. There is good growth, but lots of weeds around (kind of like the lawn you showed). So I was happy to see that it isn't just me that has this issue. That's the awesome thing with your channel and the follow ups you do. It just makes you even more credible.
What type of NPK fertilizer would you recommend and what type of weedkiller? We have the "ready to use" roundup weedkiller here in a spray bottle.

Hi so honestly any appropriate Fertiliser will be fine... Ie "spring/summer".. That's all I use.. As for weedkiller for the lawn make sure it's suitable for Lawns. Roundup primarily will kill everything it touches including grass.. Although they have produced one that won't but please check it's safe for Lawns.. Any weedkiller will state if suitable for Lawns.. Ie resolva for lawns

It's already starting to thicken up, I'm mowing every 2/3 days and at a high setting. All the years I've been mowing, I never knew this. So your advice is really working. Next to tackle my front lawn. Big job!! Thanks again🙂

When using a granular Fert that may contain iron I usually work my way around the edge of the lawn facing in then walk down the centre applying as I go. Saves the worry rust marking g on the patio.
The amount of weeds in that lawn. I think it will need completely overseeding / top dressing again as your going to be left with a lot of bare patches once the weedkiller has done it's thing.

This is very timely. I've just taken off a fleece from a freshly reseeded lawn. The area is full of weeds. Ill wait a few weeks like you suggest before applying a weedkiller.

I did some patches 8 days back, seedlings are now 1 inch high but still vovering them with fkeece at night as a local cat uses the top dressed area as a toilet!! Twice i have removed the little present he/she has left along with having to level the earth again!
I have added a bit of starter fertilizer to the areas and will dpray with seaweed tomorrow, anything else i should be doing?

Fantastic video, as always, Shaun. Question, did you hand sprinkle compost in this video for ease on this type of lawn or to help us at home? Have just done a lawn reno using your advice with field compost to topdress and lived exactly to your description from a year or so back.

Your so right about wearing masks so blasé for years and never really bothered when I was doing anything at the moment just getting off of bacterial pneumonia. It’s been hell.

What’s your experience/view of those electronic mole repellers? And what’s the best way to tackle moles?
You covered the 2 worst nightmares I’m having at the moment - mole hills and weeds such as dandelions and briskly oxtongue. Im soo glad to know that weeds after over-seeding is nothing new esp even to the professional as yourself 🙏. I honestly thought it was from the top soil or compost I used as the weeds seem to have appeared 5 times more than what I had prior to over-seeding/renovating.

Thanks.. I've never realltly had a lot of issues as most of my customers are in towns and cities. From what I've read, I'd be most likely to want to watch for soil being pushed up then quickly dig that section up and humanely relocate it elsewhere.. I'm not one for traps just on a personal choice but may not have. A choice if it happened to me.. Only time will tell... That said.. We did have a mouse problem last year getting in the house and I bought some traps which worked extremely well..
With moles we get them ever so often.
Most time we use clamp traps. The sonic sticks are quite good.
One way I found to just "move them on" is to get a cap of petrol - poke your finger into the hole so you find their run.
Pour just a cap of petrol into the hole, cover it all up,. The little buggers are guaranteed to move on. Repeat it every couple of weeks and they seem to look for more nose friendly pastures.
Best think to keep moles away is to mow often. Mow twice a week and they just don't like the sound....

Our neighbours were having a little dig at me yrs ago. O why are you cutting the grass do often?
I told them it was against moles - guess who didn't believe me - guess who got visited?

Thanks for the video Shaun, perfect timing, I have my young grass coming through after seeding about 4 weeks ago and have some weeds amongst the young grass. Is there a product that will encourage the root growth? I want to try and achieve a good strong root zone to try and be more resilient against a leatherjacket attack later in the year. Love the facials and humming at the start, your a great character!!
Hi something with phosphorus an potassium will be beneficial.. Regular mowing not too short will also help 😊😊. Seaweed can also be useful.

Hi shaun, ive learnt ao much from uiur renovation videos and havw done my first 3 for customers, so thus video of the next step was perfect timing for me. Have i go it right that youd leave for around 5 weeks before u access what parts may need extea seeding etc? and is it around 8 weeks after renovation before to yiu should apply weed and feed? I appreciate each case could be unique but just a general idea on the timeline to put my mind at ease would be incredibly helpful and appreciated.

Hi 8 weeks is a good time for feed and weed as long as the lawn is doing well.. Usually once you've got the first cut done(sometimes you can see any bare spots earlier) you can look to see if any areas need seeding then should be all good
I put some weed killer on a section of my lawn and now it’s just black and dead! I scarified some dead sections off and then scattered some seeds and put some compost over the top + it has also rained but nothing has grown back! This was weeks ago too?!
Hi Dean it sound like you possibly put a total weedkiller on like roundup.. Basically anything with glyphosate in the ingredients? It would kill everything it touches... Thats fine if your intention was to do that.... But now you need to wait 2 to 3 weeks before any seeding can take place.... After the 2 to 3 weeks, then raking out all the dead matter, seeding so it touched soil then covering
Hi shaun another great video bud..❤ got another question to my last one on your previous video 3 weeks now since cut scarify aeriate and miracle gro 4 in 1..been cutting not to short as you said also...ive got some patches still with weeds and areas of dead looking old grass so the question is what is my next step? Lawn is looking far better since watching your videos and following your guidance thank you ❤️
Hi probably those dead bits might need a bit more raking and if not too bare some seeds throwing down. By now the weedkiller should be well on its way and the weeds should be curling up not sure why.. Feel free to post pic sin my facebook group Facebook.com/groups/lawnrightcommunity thanks

That was a blank canvas, I reckon mid July, promising. By the way how are your toes. They must be over heating in them boots. I have gout and bursitus. Hot days I have to ice down twice a day. But we push on to make our lawns better than our neighbours, YEH !!!! ❤
Thanks.. As you may (or may not) know, Ive had severe big toe pain for about 3 to 4 weeks.. After much searching and convincing from my mum, I think Ive got topside of it now.. Mum thought it was gout.. I wasn't so sure.. If I spent all day on the sofa, the pain would ease after 2 days.. but then return.. I stopped drinking alcohol (almost 4 weeks now), and have been eating better. The pain has almost gone completely along with resting whenever I can.. I personally think it was through over-use (had been working 7 days a week for a month or so)

Hi most are pet friendly. You need to keep pets inside until the product has dried which is usually about 2 hours.. But pls check any products before applying
I there I have done a renovation with my front lawn all looking nice so far about 3 cuts in now some seed heads coming up for poa,
Some other weeds through that I have tried pick out can I spray a weed killer on the lawn that won't damage the new grass I have or keep up regular mowing etc and feeds
Hi I usually wait a good 6 weeks minimum after renovating before weedspraying an that's only if it's doing well 😊

What length would you do the first few cuts? I have mostly a fescue lawn with some bent in a shaded area (grass generally grows well though). The first cut was at 40mm but im thinking the next should be 30mm as fescue is very fine and will flop over until the density develops. Also leaving it get to 2 inches each time before it can be cut leaves it open to disease and the intent is to mow 15-25mm anyways as that's the healthiest height for fescue to be mower at. from my experience.
Hi fescue can tolerate 1 to 3 inches so the 30mm should be just finr

Do you know what to do when newly seeded grass gets fusarium?
It's 3.5 weeks old and was getting watered 3 times a day (9am,1pm,5-6pm). The last couple of days were misty and it stayed wet over night. i noticed what i though was dandelions seeds clustered in the grass but it turns out to be fungus mold. I let it dry out today and did its first cut before any of it matts down. Seeds are still germinating as it's bent / fescue but i'll switch to 8-9am watering's only.
So far the best plan I can think of is to wait a week to see the die off before carefully using a plastic fork to remove any dead grass then add some seeds and cover with compost then water once a day and see what comes up. watering seed anymore feels like its going to result in making things worse.
Hi the drying out will help.. I'd look to water maybe 3 times a week now but fo longer.. And ye morning's.. You could look at a fungicide or a slightly higher spring fertiliser
. If possible try and gently fork the area and see how it progresses..

Hi there's so many good ones these days.. Plenty of 3 in 1. Or 4 in 1 products.. Also A1 Fertiliser is good, weedol for lawns is pretty good too

Slightly related but about renovation. I killed off top end of lawn as so much AMG. Scarified, 70/30 over to level. Seeded and preseed fertilizer. Covered with thin layer of compost. Just finished last Sunday and we had a storm when the rain bucketed down. On a slope and lots of seed ran down taking compost and fertilizer with it. Went out Monday and tried to salvage. Put down more seed in areas where it was bare but of course just crossed fingers.
Started to germinate by Wednesday but I have lines of green growth. These areas will be far too thick and other areas sparse.
What should I do about first cut? Wish I could post a photograph.Also will have to add more seed when I can see exactly where it is needed. I am utterly heartbroken.
Hi janice :). Don;t be too disheartened :). It's all sortable. Go ahead and give it a cut and once there I would use a rake to thin out the thick areas - feel free to be aggressive.. clear off the dead stuff you've raked out and then you can now look at the whole lawn for any obvious bare spots... If its literally just very young grass blades, (but mistaken for being thin), these will thicken as they develop and produce secondary tillers (second blade on the main grass blade), so where you say its thin, if its just a lot of young grasses, it will get better in the coming few weeks, but in the same breath you could scatter just a little more seed if you fancy

Absolutely yes to nitrogen.. Iron not so much but a little every few months is not a problem 😉
@LawnRight excellent, thanks for replying, just trying to establish a time table of lawn care haha. What about phosphate. Is it worth buying separately along with the nitrogen and iron? Would you say nitrogen every 6 weeks, seaweed every couple of weeks to a month, and iron maybe each 2 months?
@@ENGDyna hi you could just get a Fertiliser online.. A1 Fertiliser is pretty good and contains most of what's needed

Does weed killer not kill grass?
No is been formulated to kill broad leaf weeds. It can kill grass if applied too heavy though

Hi Dave.. I think best thing you can do is join my Facebook group Facebook.com/groups/lawnrightcommunity and share some pics of the weeds you're tackling, and let me know how you are applying the products. Some weeds are resistant to most weedkillers in all honesty.. We need to figure out the weed, make sure the application rate is being followed, and make sure it wasn't applied right before rain, making sure you didn't mow within 2 days after applying.. basically just ruling everything out.. Here to help!
@LawnRight thanks shaun...mainly daisies I'm having problems with...would a sprayer be better...didn't mow until atleast a week later...
@@davegill7614 right.. Daisies are usually one the easiest to kill. Remember alos it takes a good 7 to 10 days after applying weedkiller to a lawn for the weeds to start curling up. A spray is def better as heavy water droplets can run off so a fine rose would be better than a standard rose if using a watering can.. Or make up a mix an dpop it in a cheap spray bottle that hairdressers sometimes use
