Do This To BATTLE Lawn Fungus Into Submission!

- Some years are worse than others, but when you get Red Thread and mushrooms in the lawn it can become a nightmare.
This year has been INCREDIBLY wet, and coupled with the hot weather at the minute, we have seen an abundance of perfect conditions for all manner of lawn diseases to occur.
In this video I talk about Red Thread (lawn Fungus), and what you can do about it. As a home owner your fungicide options are very limited, but there are a few things that can be done.

Products that will help;
A high Nitrogen lawn feed - but make sure the lawn is kept watered deeply twice a week (mornings only), otherwise you may burn the lawn.
I'd suggest a feed with PK value of 46-0-0.
Please follow the application rate on the bag (all products have different rates).
For example 2 to 4kg per 10,000 square metres would mean 2 grams to 4 grams per square metre, in however much water is needed to cover your lawn. I find about 4 litres of water covers about 60 to 70 square metres. You can simply fill up your sprayer with water and see how many litres are used to cover your lawn.
A lawn fungicide - at the minute domestic offerings are very poor so you may wish too call on the services on a professional lawn care company to apply a professional product - many are getting banned right now and as a professional myself, we are getting less access to the good stuff and are left with products that aren't quite as good (for now).
there use to be Provanto lawn Disease control - if you can find any anywhere that will help (for the Uk at least)

A timely video as I'm battling red thread (i think) - constantly raining with not much sun. Just applying feed and trying not to stress the grass too much. I have core areated innthe last couple of weeks just to improve drainage and it does seem to be helping.

Great Channel! Would love to know your thoughts on Red Thread and this whole process and the best time of the season in my area. Oct gets cold and freezes in my area of Idaho U.S.. Snow in November through spring. Would this process be better in Spring, coming right out of our last frost of the winter?
Hi if you can get a fungicide they can usually be applied through most of the year .. but didnyou wnst to do the high nitrogen approach it's best for it to be actively growing.. if you go too heavy on nitrogen close to it getting dormant it can cause soft tops of the grass causing more issues... so for now you can look at nitrogen if you're quick. or a good scarify and aerate and a good balanced autumn/fall feed.. thanks for your comment

Hi Shaun. I've noticed that my lawn has developed what I believe to be a rust infection. The blades have got this orange staining on them and looks like they have orange spaws too. It was quite bad in very small patches when I went out to cut the grass yesterday. Do you have any solutions you'd recommend for this?
You have it spot on. Have always had great success with nitrogen applied in the form of sulphate of ammonia. I don’t remember the npk values, but i think it’s about 26-0-0. Red fescue is most prone to it, bents & even annual meadow grass can also be prone. So, cultivar choice is important when creating a new lawn.
Keep cutting the grass quite short helps, grass dries out better if there is no wind to help. A very good vid for people who do not have a good knowledge of lawns etc. well done.

Great informative vid matey, I have been suffering with brown patches expanding to approx 1/3 of my lawn over much of last summer and this with no clue what it could be, I gave it an autumn feed last September with no effect. Following your vid I got down and close and sure enough picky red fungus threads in the dead grass. I have ordered high nitrogen feed but as it’s so prevalent I would like to attack it directly. As you comment all the fungicides I can find online seem to be unavailable, I have read diluted baking soda can kill it but is there an available product you can recommend? I am located in Chesterfield and you would be welcome to use my lawn for an instructural vid for your subscribers 😅
Hi thanks for watching sorry all I can suggest is get a fork into apply fungicide.. you can try neem oil or even turfsolv to help
Thank you very timely video. I got some a1 fertiliser on and the red thread has basically gone now. I had dozens of white slugs all over at one point. Question: is it better to cut shorter when its wet and humid plus fungus problem??
Hi I suppose if you did the wind could blow off some excess moisture which may help.. was it the a1 spring summer fert?
@LawnRight yep ultimate spring summer. I had mixture of new turf, new grass from seed and original turf and all growing at different rates and then plagued with red thread. With the fert on its all coming up green and growing fairly evenly, result 👌

I have seen Provanto - Fungus Fighter Plus spray. It's not the lawn sachet product but contains 0.125g/l Trifloxystrobin and 0.125g/l Tebuconazole,. Its supposed to be for ornamental plants but I have no idea what it would do to grass.
There used to be one with na almost identical name years ago guess it got discontinued or possibly rebranded to this. This should do the trick tho
@@LawnRight thanks! I'll order some and spray it this week then reseed on the weekend or later next week depending on the die off time of the grass. It's new grass so seeing the soil is no issue as it's not thickened yet.

Hi Shaun anything natural that may work against fungus in the lawn. I don’t really want to use a fungicide as I’m going to do a small renovation at the end of august. How long after seeding a new lawn can you use a fungicide? Also how long after applying one can you put more seed down. Sorry if you covered this in the video not watched it yet.
Hi you could try neem oil... you will be fine to seed any time with these 😊😊

I have issue with my backyard garden. I have been scarifying aerating over seeded the bare patches as you have been explaining I can see growth of new grass but there are green patches which looks like fungus on one patch and I can see some brown patches also!
Not sure how to cure it and I can see a lot ants in my garden. Any suggestions what can I do about it.
Great video friend....I have widespread red thread (vivid red colour) in the central area of my lawn (appeared last few weeks). I've opted for Miracle Gro Evergreen with 27% total nitrogen (not as high as your recommendation but I thought this would be safer for amateur use). Problem now is getting a dry day to get the stuff on in between torrential storms...hopefully will get it on before end of this week. Fingers crossed. I do verticut a few times in Spring (top dressed with Jacks Magic and seeded) and again in Autumn but don't aerate separately.

Hi, i think i;ve got Pythium Blight (cottony spider webs all over morning damp lawn) and dying patches of greasy looking grass with a fishy smell. How can i get rid of it?? I cannot purchase the treatments without a license (menoxafam etc).... and ive been quoted some very scary figures ££££ for treatment by so called professionals. Any suggestions for DIY?? Ive tried bicarb diluted in water and a treatment from amazon claiming to be the cure but did sweet FA too. Help!
Hey.. Can you aerate it? Personally, I'd scarify and aerate. It prefers poor draining soil, like clay. Then when spring hits and it's drier a good nitrogen feed
Firstly thanks for your reply. It is very very clay soil. I heavily scarified and aerated twice last year and cleaned all tools. But it has spread massively. I will scarify and aerate first thing this year and give a high nitrogen feed. Thanks once again Shaun.

Would you say its worth doing a precautionary fungicide (eg around early June) to try and get ahead of red thread (prevention rather than cure)?
If its starting to get humid then yes..you can do around 4 applications a year
But what can you use?
@@Ray_ray11 probably something like Dedicate - but its not cheap (although a bottle should do 2500m2) so it actually does work out a lot cheaper (if you can afford the initial upfront cost) than getting the lawn disease sashets from bayer (as you need 6 sashets (2 boxes of 3) to do approx 120m2)
Hiya! I need some advice please... since I scarified the lawn is being taken over by clover 😢 what do I do?
I have clover and I've read that mecoprop-p is what you want, and so I've applied Miracle-Gro 121187 EverGreen Complete 4-in-1. I'm about 1 week after applying so I think it's too early for me to tell how successful it's been, they say 3-5 weeks before you know or see weeds dying off. Just mow regular after 3 days after applying. And apply before rain is due, perfect right now if you can find a window.
Weedol for lawns will sort it out

Itll definitely help reduce and minimise thatch although if disease pressure grows bigger itll still come
I’ve have small thin greyish, mushroom growing out of my lawn, so there not a problem then ?
I've had the same (just one)- wasn't there and then overnight it was there, taller than the grass as well. Not too concerned, sign of good soil I guess

At the first sign of fungus I use 1oz of propiconazole 14.3 followed by 1lb of Nitrogen per1000 square feet, then water every morning. Grows like crazy but fungus free in 2-3 weeks. I know propiconazole is not available in the UK, the joy of living in the US. 1000 square feet = 92 square meters.

@@LawnRight 80F and 70% humidity means I have fungus every year, so I got a lot of trial and error practice before I got it right. 4000 SQ feet in the front lawn, and 2 acres at the back (360 and 8,600 square meters) means I buy in bulk, which makes it quite cheap.
Are they being banned for good reason? Maybe a good thing?

I heard diluted mix of vinegar and water works. No mushrooms for me after trying? Not sure if long term solution though

How much vinegar to water did you use? I think I’m noticing early signs of design and I would like to get it nipped in the bud.
@@haydenwareing9405 one part white vinegar to 4 parts water was recommended but I just gave a big squirt into a 5L watering can and put this on after a mow
