- Why seaweed is the future of fertilizer
To find out how the seaweed is harvested and processed, we travelled to the west coast of Ireland
to Ocean Knowledge's seaweed factory to find out about the sustainable methods they use to harvest the seaweed and process it using a cold-pressed extraction process
On our next part of the journey we travelled to the world-famous Ballyliffin Golf club, home of the Irish opened in 2018 to interview Andy Robertson, the links superintendent to find out how he uses the seaweed and why it's an important part of how he maintains his golf greens
On this visit, we caught up with Declan Gallagher, managing director at Ocean Knowledge to find out
What's the difference between seaweed, algae and kelp
What nutrients are in the seaweed, how seaweed helps with soil health and why carbohydrates are important to plant health
Wanting to know more about seaweed and the science behind it, we travelled back to Belfast to meet up with Dr Deborah Cox, Managing Director of Lagan Valley Scientific at Belvoir Park Golf Club.
Deborah talked us through the science behind seaweed, including how seaweed helps with root growth and how seaweed can help with plant stress and seed germination. The different methods used to apply seaweed to a lawn or plants and how seaweed can help with not only your lawn but the other plants and flowers in your garden.

A massive thank you to all the people and companies that took part in this. This video was three years in the making
On the channel, I get asked a lot of questions as to why seaweed is good for a lawn.
I reached out to Ocean Knowledge as I already use their products. They invited me to Donegal to see how the seaweed is made. We tried to make that video a few times but covid kept getting in the way. As time passed with each attempt, we started to have more ideas on how we could improve the video.
It's been a learning experience for me and my dad Chris, as we drove around Ireland on our quest to find out about seaweed. This video was a huge project to film and edit. We travelled hundreds of miles, with hours of footage and the editing time far exceeded what I have ever done before.
But it's now done and if you are reading this, thank you for watching. If you made it this far into the video description and have a question I will do my best to answer it. (Let me know if you read this far)

Robbie, I remembered that you had a video on this and shared it with my workmates. I have only done two applications this year on my home lawn, I only started in July... and I am certain that I will reference it again. To me, this type of content is exactly WHY the internet was built. To preserve high quality knowns, and to carefully advance from there. Thank you for putting this together.
Thank you for sharing it :)
Robbie, Thank You For getting this video made and the work You and the People in this video did to help the rest of Us lot understand and flourish in this field.
There is a lot of great info here for anyone wanting to learn about lawn care, thanks for your comments
Another great insight ! I always wondered about the 60% : 40% split between foliar & root acquisition so that was very helpful to have that explained. Many thanks.
It's a deep dive this video
Great video as always Robbie, nice to see production and analysis of seaweed as fertiliser. 👍
I live in New Zealand, so we’re surrounded by kilometres of beaches and huge amounts of seaweed species.
Being a keen gardener and recreational fisherman, I’ve always used seaweed as a tea on my lawns and gardens.
Great video and info mate, appreciate your time effort and knowledge you share with the world.👍👍
Thank you for the feedback 🙂
Fantastic video
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Excellent information
😊👍🙏
What a great video this is Robbie, i've watched it three times now just so i can take in all those useful nuggets of information. It is something i will incorporate into the lawns that i look after, thankyou.
Glad it was helpful! There is a lot to it!
thank you so much , really informative
Your welcome, thanks for your feedback 😁
Great video thanks
🙏thank you 🙏😊
Found it very interesting and I will come back to it from time to time.
Never knew how time consuming and manual seaweed collection was. I love that you have given us lots of serious information. I always think lawns are the most expensive plants not only in cost but in knowledge.
Particularly pleased with the which fertilizer to use each season. So thank you. It must of taken ages to video and edit. Wondering what's next!
Glad it was helpful and you enjoyed it. It took around 2 weeks in total to make. Between driving to the locations, filming and editing.
Wow ! I've learned so much from this video. It's one thing being told to do something but nice to have the benefits explained so clearly. The whole process from sea to bottle was fascinating. Thank you
Thanks for the feedback 😊
What a fantastic video, thanks Robbie.
It took a while to make this one, but it's one of those videos I think we all can learn from. Thanks for the comment :)
@@Premier_lawns_official It was very professional, just fantastic. Thanks again ☺️

Very informative .I must put this on my shopping list for this summer. Thanks for making the video it was really good.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it
What a great video!! The photography and sound is as good as watching a TV program. And the knowledge being shared is fantastic! Thank you for sharing this information to us viewers and the effort and time gone into the making of it.
Thank you for the feedback, this video was a labour of love
Brilliant video Robbie sent this video to my class mates in the botanic garden’s in Dublin they were very impressed. There will be a rise in seaweed sales for sure
These guys sell a LOT of seaweed already 👍👌
great video
Thanks 🙏👍
Excellent production on this video. really appreciate the effort you put into it. Was a pleasure to watch. Plus some awesome Irish accents! :D Thank you!
Thanks, it was a labour of love that's for sure!
Brilliant video Robbie, I've been using a seaweed product you recommend two years ago and the results are fantastic. I now use seaweed on the hole garden and its organic which I like. I seaweed every Sunday. Really enjoyed the video. 👍👽
👍👍👍🙏
Great video!
Thanks 🙏👍
Really helpful video!
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Beautiful video, Robbie. Super well done, very professionally presented and, most importantly, easy to understand.
I am originally from British Columbia, Canada, seaweed and kelp is prolific along the coastline. I've never used it on my lawn or garden, I've only eaten it, its commonly served in Asian restsurants. An acquired taste I must say. But, after this video, I think I will try it as a tea in my garden.
Thank you for going to all this work 👍🇨🇦
Thank you for the fantastic feedback, it was a really interesting video to make and as bit outside what I normally make videos about
👍🙂
Very good video. Thanks Robbie. I always smash the like button 😊
Good lad, I appreciate it 😊💯
I love this video and the information within! I've been applying Seaweed to my lawn for a year now not knowing the true benefits. Thank you for helping me understand!
Happy to help
Wow.. this was such an amazing video.. reminded me of college .. thank you
Thanks 🙏👍🙏
Have to say Robie what a great and informative video!👍
Thanks 👍
Great video and so interesting 👍🏼🏴⛳️
Good man 👍👌
Some amazing scenery there Robbie and really informative video, seaweed is the stuff 👌
Thanks Jonny 😊
Excellent video Robbie. Great to see an in depth and science led video showing why seaweed is beneficial. Given the hike in prices for fertiliser I'm going to try the AMS, Seaweed and Iron route this year rather than use expensive big brand fertilisers.
It's easy for companies to make big claims with not much to back it up, these guys have the research to be able to show what their product does 👌
Super video Robbie, very informative & by pure coincidence I used Maxicrop seaweed extract on my lawns today, thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Top content, really interesting and well produced 👍
Thanks 😊 🙏
Brilliant video Robbie, very informative! I knew seaweed had it's benefits but it's good to know the actually science behind it 👍🏾
👍👍👍👌👌
Hi Robbie, great video very interesting 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 🙏
Great video & great marketing! Education & interesting 👍
Thanks, it was a fun one this to make. A lof of effort!
❤ this content. Thank you for going above and beyond to get this out there. I love seaweed. Have been using it for over 30 years. The processing is key and cold press is truly the only way to preserve nutrient content. Any heat processing destroys the inherent benefits.
Over the years I’ve learned that you can easily overdo it. A little goes a long way. I tend to spray now using less than the recommended concentration. I’ve also started using fulvic acid in the mix with incredible results.
I’ve been pushing applications further into the fall early winter as long as the ground isn’t frozen.
I would love to know your application thoughts and how you are using it.
Thank you again. You are a true classic
Hi I seemed to have missed this comment, I use seaweed on a monthly basis on my own lawn
It's great if you are seeding too or overseeding. I have a project underway that shows this
@@Premier_lawns_official u owe a pint 🍺 for missing my comment. Stay true. U are one of the few lawn dudes that actually do the work and show the bad and the good. Ur a good man and I appreciate all ur efforts

Absolutely brilliant video Robbie, can I use seaweed in conjunction with iron sulphate in the knapsack sprayer?
Yep 👍
Excellent film, very interesting and informative. Well done 👍🏻. My question is what frequency of application on lawns would you recommend at this time of year and into the summer months? Thanks.
Once a month
Fantastic video thank you so much for the time and effort in making this! I'm currently waiting for a reply from Donegal on how to get their product in Denmark where I'm from. So hoping they can point me to a reseller in the EU.
Question: As mentioned multiple times by the experts in the video, Seaweed can be applied all year around. But how often would you recommend I spray my lawn with it? Once a week or? I really hope I find a reseller within the EU
Once a month is perfect
Hi Robbie enjoy your videos they're very informative
I collected seaweed and put it into a plastic dustbin 3 years ago. Will this be good to use
Not sure to be honest... Probably be grand, but that's a guess at best
Great video!👍
I live near the sea so i have collected some seaweed which has been fermenting in a bucket of water the past year. I have applied it to my lawn but im struggling to work out how much to apply? My lawn is 135 m2 . So far i have only applied it twice this year 130ml to 10lts of water. Not sure if this is correct?
Any help at all will be much appreciated 😊
Hi Mark, not sure to be honest. I always buy mine pre made
Hi Robbie, Great video as always. Can you please post a link to the seaweed product you use when you sow new seed? Apologies if you have already posted it...Thanks👍
If you contact the company in the video description, they will send you some. It's a lot better than anything you will find on Amazon
@@Premier_lawns_official thanks very much. Much obliged to you. I'll get some. Keep up the good work👍
I didn't catch what was done with the waste. It looks to be small yellow pellets that could be used in some animal feeds maybe?
I'm going to search out this product and see where it's available here in Australia.
Really impressed with the quality of the cleaning by hand before processing.
My advice would be to contact them directly

Amazing video, I use seaweed frequently for my new grass.
I have noticed it promotes growth of weed and moss, is there any way you advise yo prevent this and feed only the grass?
Thanks
It doesn't do either. That's just nature 😁
Another brilliant video Robbie. Nice work fella. Should we be adding Sulphate Ammonia to our feeding regime?

First! 😂 lol.. another great video!
Good lad lol
What should you do if you are addicted to seaweed?
Sea kelp 😂

Very informative, Robbie. It's a great green alternative to granular fertiliser. Do you think it will ever replace granular nitrogen?
If you use it alongside fertilizer, it will make it better. Think of it as turbo charging the plant. It's not a replacement for fertilizer though
@Premier Lawns thanks 😊
A complex process, and of great benefit or they would not spend money on it. Obviously iron and nitrogen are going into the soil via the two sulphates . I’m not sure if the seaweed is delivering enough Phosphorus or Potassium in the NPK ratio or whether it’s delivering a list of other nutrients and carbs so that the roots are strengthened in a different way. In any case it works.
They pay for independent research with published results. It's sold all over the world
Really interesting video and looking to get some. I can't find their product but can find MultiMite at £50 for 20 litres. Will this be just as good ie are they all similar - guess not???. Which do you recommend?

how often do you apply to a lawn monthly or less
Monthly
Where can you buy Ocean Knowledge seaweed? I’ve tried their website but can’t see any option to buy, or on any other website. Cheers
I don't know, they don't seem interested selling it in small amounts
I've bought Sea Magic Dry Soluble Seaweed Extract Fertilizer, what would the dilution rate be for 1000 sq feet of lawn? Can one add too much seaweed to ones lawn?
I'm not familiar with that, it should say on the label. If not contact them directly 👍
Great video, Robbie. Unfortunately for me, I can't find any way to buy this product in Germany. Ocean Knowledge has not replied to any of my emails or "Contact Us" requests. Their website shows Germany as one of their supported locations, but after a month of searching and asking here, I can't find any commercial or retail distributor who knows about them.
Ocean Knowledge is not alone in ignoring me. I sent several email requests to Multi Mite about their seaweed extract product over the past two months, and have not received a reply.
I did find one German supplier who stocked seaweed extract (unable to identify the brand). The minimum order is a 100 liter drum and they only sell to businesses.
Update: Within minutes of sending my latest email to Ocean Knowledge, Orán replied with information about a company named TURF, which is a stocking supplier in Austria. I sent them an email asking about sales to private customers.
@@Mike--K great 👍👍
Robbie, once opened, can the seaweed be kept for a long time in storage?
It should say on the label, the stuff I use has a best before label on it
@@Premier_lawns_official cheers Robbie, much appreciated. Keep up the great work! 👏

So effectively a seaweed smoothie. I admit, I had always assumed there would be a concentration step after the dewatering centrifuge. I wonder how it’s kept from souring in the container, because in theory, there should be an anaerobic fermentation going on in that pot. Anybody know what they add to stop it fermenting?
They add a food preservative to it I think
@@Premier_lawns_official That would make sense, I’ve tried to make it myself (using pond blanket weed as my algae source and the wife’s food blender) and it goes really stinky after a few weeks! I used it when she was out, or I wouldn’t have lived to tell the tale!

Hi Robbie when using sulphate of ammonia can you use granular form , if so at what rate per m2.
Application rates for sulphate of ammonium are between 20/35 gms per metre2. That's what it says on the tub of ammonia i've got, it is also in granular form. Plus you can mix it with water as it is soluble.
I think I'm going to do a video about it
@Premier Lawns that what be awesome Robbie.
Hi Bernie Moscrop are you sure thats the correct rate for sulphate of ammonia ive been using it at 2.5 grams per m2 one of us has it wrong ?
I have just seen 20-35 grams per m2 on a bag of sulphate thats feeding it to soil granular Iam sure Ive seen somewhere It might have been one of Robbies Vids that mixing it with water and spraying on a lawn you need far less,

You should eliminate lawns and use sea weed to grow a healthy garden full of food and flowers for pollinators. Lawns are a waste of space and resources and provide nothing in return.
