True story: Permadeath hardcore RP server [NWN1 PW Haze]

- Permanent death in MMORPG's doesn't usually go together, but Haze in NWN1 (neverwinter nights 1) was a server that featured hardcore RP, permadeath, and community-based role-playing.

Haze was the best, all-consuming gaming experience I have ever had. Nothing in the subsequent ~20 years of gaming has come close.
Can I make your words my words? Thats just what I feel! COMPLETELY! What character did you played in HAZE? (sorry for my english)
I was playing on "Sartre's Borderlands" server when one of our DM's went over to HAZE. After learning my way a little bit, I created a Wild Elf barbarian character, but didn't go to the elven area... I took him to the forest edge of the mostly abandoned gnomish farmlands and just existed out there. My character didn't speak common, he only spoke elven, and I never ran into another elf... although one DM took pity on my in my dedicated isolationism, and spawned another wild elf (NPC) and provided me a one-handed spear and a shield, which was a literal god send! --I hadn't run into any PvP on Haze yet and really wasn't much of a PvP'er myself... until another player came out to my idyllic forest edge which I stood sentinel over... and picked a fight with me, knocking me out (subdual!) and took my shield from me. I was so crushed that someone would do such a thing to another player... actually TAKE something away from someone else by force. It created a dark shadow in my mind, and the character became un-fun and I self-killed him so I could create a new character. --I always regretted not RP'ing that character hunting down and attacking the offending PC to get my shield back. It didn't even occur to me at the time to RP a vandetta and become a hostile force. Looking back it was definitely a missed opportunity.

Honestly, your ending speech about Haze being apart of yourself, and your story hit me square in the chest because I felt the same about a few PWs as well.

I experienced VERY similar things to Haze, and it's a high that you get that is very, difficult to ever get again and it makes you feel lonely, sad, and missing of those stories and the past.
I'm glad you posted this, and I'm glad you told your story, as I feel I have an obligation to tell mine as well now.
Ohh Last Gate was the PW I ran! I'm surprised someone remembers it. It was certainly inspired by Haze. Wake was also inspired by Haze and made with some Haze veterans, I wasn't involved with the staff though. All the PW's that came after Haze were relatively short lasting; Penitence, Wake, NWN2 Haze, Last Gate... some managed to peak at 60 players at the beginning but there was a quick decline. Let me know once you tell your story, would be happy to watch it.

OMG, I can't believe you ran Last Gate, that was like the starter drug for me, it's where I started a lot of my roleplaying, I remember walking into a bar with a character called Gregor Snow. grizzled old man, not even a character name.
I just wanted to say that I felt what you felt in a lot of ways, and it's a hard thing to realize it is in the far past, yet ache for it constantly.
You can say that I was a unknowing scion of Haze, It was insightful that you showed this - as I feel the same as you in many ways.

I used to play back on Haze in my early teens, didn't think I would run into someone else that played in it since, but this has been a nice little nostalgia trip. I joined the server just after the players had moved to the hamlet out by the beach, and remember the tyranny of Jasper(I think that was his name), the bandit.

I played in Haze during my teen years too. My most memorable time was when I played a rogue halfling that convinced a half-orc barbarian to join him on his "genius" plan. The plan: there was a wedding coming up and we were to hide in the bride and groom's wedding night room and catch them naked and steal their jewelry. It was so outrageous and funny and DMs stepped in and escorted us to safety because there was a man-hunt on us. But we weren't the smartest couple so we tried to turn on the DM's NPC and failed and got executed.

Hi! Wow.. that was excellent coverage on such an interesting phenomenon. I suspect much culture today leaves less flexible leisure time overall (required of course for committing to an effort such as this) as in the past - especially so in the US. I can also see this difference quite easily pronounced when watching older movies so much so that it leaves me baffled - how different people acted in the past - vs today with such a heightened productivity requirement. People had more time for extended social graces and meandering folly, and didn't need to be spending so much time in front of screens... which is an ironic example to use in this case.
You think so? There are tons of roleplay servers in lots of different games these days, they may not have the exact sort of settings I described but it still requires a lot of time commitment. I think it's just a matter of us being younger (more time) VS being older (family, career commitment, etc)

I played NWN back in those days, mainly on Amia but I had characters on more PWs than I can remember.
I had the pleaure of playing and for a brief stint DMing on this server.. amazing world, great devs, and a good time.. pity it has never come back.

My god my CZcams user name hasn't been updated since NWN2 was out, though I never bother to make youtube comments before. Nice video. I played HAZE under a different name than even the one I was more known for in the NWN/NWN2 days (0100010) I contributed to HCR's & HAZE's codebase and I wrote HCR2.
I played Lothar de la Rosa, a Bard... My char had a show every "night" in that Tavern! Haze was the best Role Play experience of my life and... (of corse permadeath was very important to make it so imersive and meaningfull) ...I play a lot of RPG, even PnP

I remember that server ended because of TEAMs burnout, I dont remember it to end because the lack of players... Right?

And yes you're right, players started leaving. As far as team burnout I only know that HOT (the admin) had more pressing issues IRL so at some point he left.
You want permadeath ALFA WD (Waterdeep) and soon ALFA MS (Moonshea) will have it.
It's the whole shebang I described, permadeath just glued it all together. In of itself permadeath is just another feature
I dream of a Conan exiles server with these exact things, slow, rewarding progression in every sense.
We actually discussed the possibility of creating such a server in Conan about 2 weeks ago, we'd need a much bigger team for that though and right now we decided it's a bit outside of our range and resources. We are working on the next installment of this in Neverwinter Nights: Extended Edition

Vividly you say? :) Are you a part of the facebook group? I'm actually working on a full documentary about Haze and looking for more lore, players emotions behind the scenes stuff to paint a full picture of what happened, I would love it if you could join the effort
@@Larpushka I remember almost everything about all my character life in HAZE. I had really bad moments after it went down, because i knew that it was almost impossible to have such an experience like that again! I have some nice stories, but all arround my character, I think... If you need some help, say something! :D
@@renatodias3670 Honestly I never knew it was almost impossible to have such an experience like that again, if I did I would've done a better job keeping chat logs and screenshots! I was sure it was gonna keep going and growing and that NWN2 will be awesome and that NWN3 will come around... and that the Haze paradigm will give birth to several other similar servers ... hah, little did I know... Haze remains one of a kind. Never experienced anything like that since. Thanks for offering to help, the info-collecting part ended a few weeks ago after some old players helped me out and I pretty much got what I needed. If you have any chat logs/screenshots saved though that'd be terrific, though I understand it's highly unlikely
