History-maker! Legendary KAUTO STAR is the first horse ever to regain his Cheltenham Gold Cup crown

- The great Kauto Star won the 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cup, seeing off stablemate Denman by 13 lengths, to become the first horse to regain National Hunt's blue-riband race, following on from his victory in 2007.
Twelve months earlier it had been Denman who powered to success in the race but it was a different story on this occasion as King Kauto looked back to his brilliant best, jumping and travelling with his usual verve before storming clear under Ruby Walsh to lead home a 1-2-3 for trainer Paul Nicholls.
Walsh said afterwards: "He's the greatest horse I've ever ridden. Two miles, three miles, now two Gold Cups. He's magic, he's a wonder horse."

Such a pity Denman got sick. What a tough horse to get second. Probably one of his best races considering 💯👍👍👍
Denman produced his best ever performance after he got sick, when he won the Hennessy the season after this. This was as good as he was on good ground - and it simply wasn’t as good as Kauto.

I remember when Chanel 4 racing used to cover the big meetings. So so glad that itv racing has taken over.
This wasn’t the real Denman. Normally with his style he woulda took this up after half way and asked them all to go with him. This was a Denman at 80%. If that. Kauto was unreal but I’d take a prime Denman anyway in the Cheltenham Gold cup.
This was the real Denman… on good ground. He was a fierce stayer who sapped the speed out of faster horses on soft ground over 3 mile plus. On good ground he was never going to be able to outsprint Kauto. Ruby said it best when talking about Kauto: This is the best horse I ever sat on. Ruby of course sat on Denman many times. Paul Nicholls, trainer of Kauto and Denman, who also loved Denman’s owners (in fact rented his stables off one of them, Paul Barber) and hated Kauto’s owner, also said Kauto was the best he ever trained.
watching this today and although always having held walsh in high regard ...i find it quite shameful how often and how hard he keeps smacking the great kauto star while leading by 15+ lengths.
And what a way to die ……cross tied in a stable ……they couldn’t let him live with his mate Denman could they …..they had to send him to a horse dressage trainer …..I was going to use another word but thought it would get deleted ……..was it Laura Collett ……this magnificent horse died on her watch ……I couldn’t live with myself …..I hope she can ……Why …..senseless ……his life thrown away …..he could be sleeping in the sunshine now enjoying retirement…

Powerful, unfortunately Sam Thomas ruined Denman the year before.
Wonderful magnificent horse who had the misfortune to be owned by an egotistical, callous idiot who did not honour this great horse. He broke his spirit by forcing him into dressage. Shame on him
