Charlie Wilson is a good man. People forget that much of the Afghan's we sided with would became the Northern Alliance, which we assisted in over throwing the next totalitarian threat, the Taliban. And yes, there were many of those that replaced the communist government with an Islam theocratic one. Wilson and the government had no way of knowing this. Wilson meant well.

Charlie Wilson was a Democrat, but Reagan approved of his work. Joanne Herring is the great heroine, she was wealthy, a socialite, a fund raiser, but unlike Hollywood women she did something that really helped children, she made a difference. She just didn't show up to "save the rain forest" or add silly comments to climate change. Her humanitarian achievement, is perhaps unmatched in her time. She was not a politician but accomplished far more than those who were. This was a great group of real Americans who made this happen, and saved lives of thousands of Afghans. And she did this all behind the scenes, not part of an institution, just using her natural gifts of personality. This, along with Reagan, helped end the Soviet Union. Now Obama is allowing Putin to move back into eastern europe.

unlike the wisdome of Ang San Su Kyi or Nelson Mendela, this man just poured gasoline on a fire instead of trying to stop the war. he's probably responsible for just as many civilian deaths in Afghanistan in the 80s as the soviets were. i hope history learns from his disregard for human life.
